Today was the day that Capsule would finally focus on her crafting subclass. She had been too focused on her main and rp class to put some effort into making some potions, but she was determined to fix that today. She had spent some time studying the low level recipes available for her class, and had gathered up the paltry materials necessary for her craft; impure tablets, base herbs, and impure solvents. All these and a few other essential tools were scattered about her cleanly scrubbed bathroom. This was (now) the cleanest place in her apartment, so it was sterile enough to get the job done.
As her "employers" refused to allow her to handle their own utensils, she was forced to collect her own as best as she could. Luckily for Capsule, supplies for pharmacists could be obtained for a few gold coins. She had a bought herself a kit that included a few small bowls, beakers, several small tubes, a steel spoon and a syringe. It was overall a rather cheap set, one she was told to replace as soon as possible, but would serve her well for the task at hand.
The Person of the Land she had purchased the set from was nice enough to give her a few tips on how to go about making potions, and had even given her a small list of basic ones she could perform at her level. They seemed rather simple as instructions went, but she made sure to carefully go over them a few times before she got her work station set up. There did not seem to be any way to screw this up, though.
Capsule was going to try her hand at making the first thing on the list: Medicinal Formula. She picked up a bowl and placed two base herbs and one impure solvent within. Using a spoon, she stirred the contents up until the herbs were well saturated in the solvent, and placed the bowl over a borrowed hot plate. It would take a while for the contents to boil, so while she waited for that to be finished, Capsule began fidgeting with the tools she would be using next.
A small strainer and a clean bowl were set aside, as well as the little flask she would collect the completed potion in. She poked and prodded at the contents of the boiling mixture for a few moments, wondering if she should have used the system to assist her instead. 'I could have, but who knows if it would even come out properly?' It was probably best to stick with making things by hand; she had seen the aftermath of how food created by the system. 'I wonder if I can flavor these potions, too.' Many people disliked the taste of medicine, and she was certainly one of those. When the time came, though, she could swallow down the nastiest of concoctions if it meant it would make her feel better. "I hope these come out all right." The batch was now starting to really boil, and with that came a bit of steam. Capsule coughed and winced as the steam wafted out and stung her eyes. The redhead blinked and rubbed at her eyes with the back of her hand, trying to diminish the burning sensation. 'Nngh. My eyes~.' The woman scuttled back, away from the offending steam, and blindly searched around for something to cover the bowl with. She lacked a lid of any sort, but her grimoire was more than enough to suffice.
The steam had grown quite thick during the time it was free, so Capsule was forced to vacate the room in search of fresh air. "Oh god," she wheezed as she stuck her head out the window. Had she neeped up again? It sure felt like she neeped up again. 'Bleh.' A brief glance at her recipe told her that it was indeed supposed to steam up like this, but needed to be covered to prevent the workspace being fogged up with chemicals. Capsule had overlooked this minor detail because she had assumed that the steam would not be anywhere as bad as this. It was only now that she realized her folly, and felt silly for it. ’I won’t make the same foolish mistake next time,’ she thought as she wrinkled her brow in frustration. ’Ugh. Now, back to work, I suppose.’ She would just have to deal with the obnoxious fumes for now.
Capsule bravely stepped into the bathroom, which was now looking less steamy since the book was covering the bowl. When she lifted the book, a bit of steam arose but it was much tamer than before. It calmed down even more when she stirred it with her spoon, and set that aside. 'There. I think it's about ready now.' That didn't mean it was safe for public consumption yet, of course. She was going to test the virility of this potion out on a subject, and as she was the only human up here, that subject was going to have to be one of the many rats that dwelled within her apartment.
The main bulk of the rats may have been handled by her employers, but a few had evaded detection, and thus were still scuttling about her home. As they were not hostile creatures she left them alone and vice versa, and had even come to find their presence useful or pleasant. The rats always alerted her of would be intruders by way of their sudden scuttling into a safe place, or sometimes even nabbed a few bits of food from downstairs that she commandeered and distributed. 'Now's your chance to really prove your usefulness to me,' she thought as she slapped on a pair of cheap latex gloves and scooped up a rat in the hall. It was injured from a recent scuffle with another rat, and had been scampering up and down the hall all morning. "Don't worry. This won’t hurt one bit," she said to it as she returned to the bathroom. The rat had relaxed once it was settled into Capsule's warm hand. It was not truly domesticated, but was at the very least refraining from biting and scratching. Capsule had to wonder just how long that would last. 'Well, it's not like I'm going to be poisoning it or anything.' This was true. She was just going to try and heal it.
The rats that had remained in her apartment were tame enough to refrain from assaulting her on sight, much unlike the ones in the real world. She had had some bad run ins with wild rats before, and was usually forced to chase them away, lest she be harassed again. Other than their hostile nature, those rats were disease ridden vermin, and quite fond of stealing food or gnawing through wires. The rats here were more like fancy rats, though Capsule was sure any rats outside the safe zone would be just as willing to nip and tear at her like their earthly counterparts. Either way, she was not fond of either form of rat, but they were still able to aid her in her professional pursuits, which she gladly took advantage of.
The rat shifted nervously as it caught a whiff of the fumes in the room, but didn't do much beyond that. Capsule squatted down in front of the now lightly boiling bowl, and placed the rat inside the tub, where it would have difficulty in trying to escape. She then began focusing on the finishing touches for the healing potion. 'Part of which requires testing~.' She used the syringe to carefully extract a small amount of liquid from the batch, and released it into one of the thin test tubes.
The liquid inside was a pretty green color, and sparkled a bit when swirled around. 'Now, let's see if you work.' The rat, which had calmed down and curled up near the drain, began squeaking and backpedaling when she reached in for it. "Easy," she warned. "I just want to make you feel better."
The creature gave up on wiggling once the woman's hand was firmly grasping its furred body. She raised the little tube up and held it to the rat's mouth, and slowly began pouring the contents down its throat. The rat's body jerked spasmodically as the liquid made its way down its gullet, but at the same time seemed to be perking up. Its health bar was increasing back to fullness, and the missing patches of fur and tail respawned until it resembled a healthy and well fed rat. "Aha," Capsule softly exclaimed as the potion took effect.
She dropped the rat back into the bathtub and went back to work. The mixture was poured through the strainer, producing a small amount of greenish liquid, a bit darker than the test tube's previous contents. Once this was done and the mixture had cooled off a bit, Capsule relocated it to the waiting flask, careful not to cause any spillage. This was her first crafted potion, after all. Capsule rolled her neck and shoulders as she prepared herself to do some more crafting. After her success with her first potion, she was starting to feel confident in her abilities. She didn't want to craft another healing item, though. 'I'm not even sure how that works.' She would, instead, be making something toxic instead - poison. She had no intentions of using it personally, but there were plenty of characters, chiefly assassins, who would be interested in the potion. There were also the silly jackasses or suicidal who wanted to drink the stuff, but if they wanted to use it for such purposes, she wasn't going to stop them. 'Just as long as they don't intend to use it on me, of course.'
For her next task, she would be making poison, not with her bowls, as she was wary of the cheap containers leaving behind residue, but in the toilet. No one in their right minds drank out of this, after all. If they happened to stick their head inside and swallowed something poisonous, they would only have themselves to blame. ’I cannot really understand why on Earth someone would even want to, but I suppose there is always the odd ball in the bunch.’
Tucking the used syringe between her teeth, Capsule squatted down in front of the toilet and took out a few pieces of wood from her inventory. They were rather scrawny pieces, but it probably wouldn't be ideal to make too large of a fire in here. She then positioned the wood directly under the toilet bowl and used the cheap lighter provided by her kit to set fire to it. It was probably dangerous to be starting fires like this in her bathroom, but as long as she kept an eye on the flames and made sure it stayed under control, everything should be alright. What little water there was in the bowl remained smooth - for now.
While she waited for the bowl to heat up, Capsule began collecting ingredients necessary. The recipe for poison was rather reversed, so she only needed one base herb, but two impure solvents. 'It's a good thing I stocked up well on materials, I guess.' She carefully dropped each ingredient into the bowl, starting with the solvents first. ’I have a feeling that this was going to take a bit,’ she thought as she examined the smooth surface of the water within the toilet bowl. But for the thickness of the bowl, it should not take much longer than the small, cheap bowl she had used to concoct her health potion. ’It could be worse, I suppose.’ There could be more water, though she could have emptied some of it into the bath tub to speed the process up a bit. ’I can’t wait until I am able to brew potions en masse. Sure, it may take longer to make than smaller batches, but at least I would be able to have more to show for all that effort.’ [newclass=.benetbar]background-color:#050505; border: 2px solid #050505; border-radius: 5px; overflow: hidden; width: 100px; height:6px;[/newclass] [attr="class","benetbar"] [newclass=.benetbar]background-color:#050505; border: 2px solid #050505; border-radius: 5px; overflow: hidden; width: 100px; height:6px;[/newclass] [attr="class","benetbar"] Words:503 Notes:Impure poison 1/3 posts Tags:---

The ingredients didn't do much at first. For the first few minutes, Capsule just stared down into the bowl, waiting for something interesting to happen. When that failed, she pulled back and pulled a stick - one of the remaining pieces of kindling - from her inventory and began poking at the contents. "I guess it's true what they say about a watched pot not boiling." The woman drew back from the bowl to perch on the edge of the tub, now whistling a low tune.
She allowed a few minutes to pass before checking up on her concoction, which was slowly beginning to boil. 'Maybe I should try chopping the ingredients up next time.' It would certainly give her a little more to do next time, and was probably best as the items would be able to break down at a faster pace.
A few small bubbles were forming in the bowl, and popped nicely when she prodded them with her stick. She didn't do this too much, though, as not to disturb the slowly bubbling concoction too much. "Note to self: toilet bowls take a while to heat up." Had she stuck to using the cheap bowl, it would be at a low boil by now. But no. She just had to think of the safety of some possible customers. 'What a pain in the…'
Capsule resumed sitting, where she warily watched as low steam slowly worked its way out of the bowl. A few minutes of this continued, but the steam eventually got to a point where it was causing the redhead's nose to twitch in irritation. From the smell of things, it seemed the concoction was finally starting to boil. The need for something to cover her mouth and therefore protect her lungs became apparent as the poison's vapors started to grow in potency.
The redhead quickly vacated the premises, much like before, and returned with a strip of cloth over her mouth and nose. She then approached the bowl and began stirring the mixture around, making sure to evenly distribute the contents. The intensity of the boil lessened a bit, as it was still in the earlier stages, but would surely boil to a roar if she allowed the fire to remain intact.
The stick was left to soak in the poison as she focused on dulling the flames, using a bit of water to splash over the licking flames. Fresh steam filled the air around the flames, mixing in with the toxins floating about in the air. Capsule coughed behind her little makeshift mask, but did not let up. The fire would be out by the time she was true, but the contents of the toilet bowl would stay warm for quite a while. 'I suppose it's about time to see if it is ready to be used yet.' A nervous squeaking came from inside the tub. The rat was well aware of its fate, from the sounds of it. It was right to be afraid, too. "I'm really sorry about this," Capsule said as she reached into the tub for the rat. "I had just healed you, too. I hope you don't mind if I add just a little poison to your daily diet, though. A drop shouldn't kill you. I don't think so, at least. I'm honestly not sure how potions here even work anymore. For all I know, a drop may well be a full potion, but that would surely be overkill for such a small creature as yourself, though I do think that rats usually build up some resistance to poisons, so maybe it won’t be that bad? Well, we'll found out at any rate, ne~?"
The rat quaked with fear as it slinked back from Capsule's searching fingers, but no matter how hard it tried, it could not evade the woman forever. It began squeaking in what sounded like fear when her hand finally wrapped around it, and tried freeing itself by violently wiggling about. Capsule just tightened her grip all the more and easily hoisted the creature out of the tub.
More squeaking filled the air, loud enough to drown out even Capsule's soft consolations. "There, there. Don't worry, little guy." That only made the rat squirm more, but Capsule just applied more pressure until it was immobilized. She brought the rat over to the toilet bowl, where she fished out the stick and pointed it down, waiting for a few of the larger drops to plop back into the mixture within. When the stick had largely stopped dripping, Capsule raised the stick and pressed the tip against the rat's mouth. It tried shutting its mouth, but Capsule pressed the tip in until the rat was forced to open its mouth. The little creature gagged helplessly as the poison seeped down its throat. "There were are~. Open nice and wide, now." There was little hope of the rat closing its mouth, not unless it gnawed through the stick first, a difficult feat given how the stick was arranged.
The rat feebly twitched in place once it was placed back in the tub. Capsule watched in quiet fascination as its health bar slowly decreased to half. The rat itself curled into a ball where it twitched some more, and spewed out a bit of bile before flopping onto its side. It didn't seem dead, at least. "Ok, so it does work. Thanks, little guy."
Capsule seized a beaker and carefully dipped it into the toilet bowl's mixture. Unlike the health potion's shimmery green, this mixture was a dark, nasty shade of green. Everything about it screamed "toxic". Capsule exercised more caution as she transported the contents of the beaker to one of her remaining tubes, and capped it. There was little left of the stuff in the toilet, so she flushed it, sending a poisonous mess to the sewers, where hopefully only rats and the like lived. ”Well, it looks like practice is over for the day,” she said with a soft sigh. As it turns out, she was really not in the mood to tinker with crafting for the duration of the day. "Maybe I'll come back to it tomorrow," she muttered as she began cleaning up and neatly putting things away.
The task of crafting had taken its toll on her, but she felt like it was well deserved practice. Her crafting level should go up a bit, even though she had only made two potions. That was how things seemed to work here; as long as you focused on doing something related to your class, you were able to level it up. It reminded her a bit of Skyrim and other similar games, though this felt more natural, now that it was not a game anymore.
As for the rat, her unwilling test subject for newly concocted potions, Capsule drained what little residue she could find in the test tube the healing potion had been tested in into the rat’s partially opened mouth. The poor rat twitched and flinched in fear during the process, but calmed down once it realized the woman was helping it. Its health did not raise much at all, but it seemed to at least be in better shape now. Capsule wondered if it would have been better to test the potion on herself, since she had the Detox skill that was presumed to counteract drug effects. She shook her head after a moment, and set the rat on the floor so it could run back to its mates before she exited the room for the day.
