even if that thing is God
Holding her scythe so that the blade is mere inches aware from her hand, Elfriede blocks the sword of a Goblin Scout. Then by using the curve on her scythe's blade, redirect the goblin's attack so that it becomes merely a grazing blow, minimizing the damage, while striking the Goblin in the back of the neck with her scythe's shaft. Following up on her counter attack, Elfriede immediately swung the blade of her scythe upwards, towards the goblin's head, aiming to impale it through the jaw and into the head. However, the goblin scout took a jump backwards and was instead sliced through the legs.
I have you now!
As the Goblin Scout leaped back, the cooldown on Elfriede's skill, Quick Draw, finished and she immediately activated it, quickly dashing at the Goblin Scout and catching it with a quick attack before its feet touched the ground. The goblin's HP struck 0 and it quickly burst into bubbles.
Breathing a bit heavily, Elfriede took a moment to look at her HP.
Nineteen hundred fifty-six out of twenty-seven hundred thirty HP, so about seventy-two percent, that's strange. My HP is still rather high yet I already feel tired. Is Stamina separate from our HP? How's my MP? Only eight-hundred nine out of twenty-seven hundred thirty? Is it perhaps tied to my MP? No, the other day I basically used up all of my MP, but I was still fine stamina wise considering. I rested for a bit, enough for my stamina to recuperate, but not long enough for my MP to fully regenerate. So, it seems that these two numbers are separate from our physical stamina.
Looking down at her scythe, Elfriede started to notice some chipping in the blade.
I wonder; just how long I have been going at this? My scythe is starting to look like it has gone through some rough times. Then again, I've been grinding off these goblins all week. I guess when you don't take time to repair your weapon, it will begin to fall apart. And speaking of weapons, I am really starting to find using a scythe to be rather annoying. It just feels really awkward constantly changing how I hold it. I really should think about getting a sword or something when I level up a bit more. Maybe at around level thirty, I'll find a blacksmith to make me a new sword. Well, I better rest up a bit before continuing the grind. If I die, I'll suffer an experience point penalty and that would set me back by probably a day or two of grinding.
Finding a relatively dry area in the swamp to set up a small campfire, Elfriede set up camp as she waited for her MP to restore itself a little.
Thank god the laws of physics still apply, somewhat anyway.
Suddenly, a line from the game Portal 2 came to Elfriede's head.
'If the Laws of Physics no longer apply in the future, God help you.'
Elfriede could not help but burst out in laughter as she remembered the line and the humor in the game. If she ever does find her way back to the original reality, Elfriede is definitely going to give Portal 2 another play through.
Well, I guess it is time to eat…
Somewhat depressingly, Elfriede took out a loaf of bread from her inventory. Sprinkling a bit of salt onto it, she depressingly chewed through the tasteless bread.
Forget Portal 2, if I ever get back home, the first thing I will do is buy myself a quadruple stacked hamburger with lots of bacon and cheese. Why is the food in this reality so bad…
Elfriede had been camping out in the swamps, grinding off the Goblin Scouts, for about a week now. It has been nearly four weeks since the apocalypse occurred, and the players found themselves stuck in the world of Elder Tale. Her goal was to simply practice and hone her skill with her scythe on the goblins as due to the nature of the new reality, having skill with your weapon made a huge difference. However, the scythe was not exactly a very practical weapon to begin with, and Elfriede has been having a hard time getting accustomed to the awkward weapon. Right now she is considering switching to a sword, but considering that her class, Assassin, has proficiency in pretty much every physical weapon in the game, Elfriede was still open to other weapons. Her current leaning towards swords is merely due to it be a historically practical weapon and did not require ammunition such as arrows in the case of a bow.

Valerie was slowly moving through the marshlands in Thames, trying to find some easy monsters to kill. The brunette’s hands were gripped on the handles of her daggers and her small body was tense and ready for anything, running or fighting. She had heard some people in London talking about low level monsters in the Marshlands, they had never told her about the horrible stench of the marshes. She wrinkled her nose and kept moving, hoping to find a monster to kill. The poor girl had been out in the marshes for two hours and had not seen or heard one monster, she didn’t even know if it was good or bad luck. Probably bad… Bad luck… Like the smell here. She though, chuckling darkly. The girl grimaced as she pushed the some tall grass aside, and a level 1 weak goblin scout stared back at her who gave a growl. Aw, Shit… She thought to herself, startled and jumped back. Automatically, she used Viper raise and cut the goblin’s arm tendons, causing blood to flow out. goblin looked at his arm wounds and turned around, trying to run away. This made Valerie grin and she chased after it. Mhm… Cowardly little thing, trying to run away from me when I’m trying to kill you. The small girl ran after it and sprang into the air as the goblin came into view and landed in front of the monster. The second her feet hit the ground, she activated Shuffle Windmill as it ran towards her unknowingly. The weak creature yelped and tried to swing its sword at Valerie, making her instinctively lean away, but she was not far enough and grazed her arm lightly. This didn’t faze her though and the swashbuckler smiled sadly at the demi-human creature in front of her. Too bad, you’re not five feet away, then you might live. Without wasting another second, she activated her last available skill, Straights, and applied it to her dominate arm, then charged at the dying creature. She used her speed to slam her left dagger into the goblin and swung her right arm horizontally, activating Straights mid swing. The monster’s HP bar emptied and it disappeared into anima. Valerie straighten her back and watched the anima rise up into the sky. Grinning, she checked her stats. Nighty five percent of her HP and eighty percent of her MP was remaining after the fight. Not bad. I should come here more often. She thought, grinning and took a deep breath, but made a face immediately. But this smell… She shivered and retched softly. Sighing, Valerie moved on but out of the corner of her eyes, she spotted the some smoke rising out of the marshes. Fire… in the marshes… Totally not humans. She thought sarcastically but headed towards the smoke. Hopefully the people there won’t kill her and shivered imagining having to die in such a place. Anything but the smell. The tall grass became lighter as she approached the base of the smoke, but she didn’t hear anyone talking. I guess there’s only one or two people here, there’s no way someone’s going to leave a fire out here. She thought to herself, before grinning and correcting herself. No one smart will leave a fire out here. Valerie approached the ring around the fire, sheathing her weapons before stepping out slowly from the tall grass. “Hello?” She called out carefully. After finishing her campfire, Elfriede toggled the Adventurer skill, Hearing Aptitude, boosting her hearing sense. It was a simple tactic: use the enhanced hearing to detect ambushes; but a rather effective one, especially at night, in a dark swamp, where visibility is poor and cover is plentiful. It probably deoesn't help that Elfriede's camp fire would likely attract predators and makes her more visible, granted she can counteract the visibility part with a stealth skill. However, having warmth while resting was a comfort that Elfriede really couldn't go without, at least not at this junction.
As Elfriede rested, she could hear footsteps and the marsh fauna rustling; something was approaching her small camp. She decided to act naturally for a bit, simply eating her tasteless dinner in silence while resting—waiting for her HP and MP to recover. Slowly, she readied her scythe, prepared to immediately enter a combat position. All of her skills were off cooldown so she could use any of them at will.
I only hear one coming so unless the others are muffling the sound of their movements somehow, I should easily be able to handle this. Starting off with Quick Draw should catch them by surprise.
As the subject in question stepped out of the tall grass, Elfriede immediately stood into a combat stance as the girl in front of her said, "Hello?" Elfriede's face went from someone who was ready to defend their life to an embarrassed young girl, as if her childhood male friend just happened to see her undergarments. With a beet red face, Elfriede mind went from activating Quick Draw to jumping into the tall grass while activating Hide Walk, then poking her head out a bit to watch her surprise guest. Thus, the level twenty-three Assassin hid from a level 1 swashbuckler.
Why am I hiding? She's only level one! Even if she wanted to harm me, which I doubt she does considering the fact that she took time to say hello and doesn't have her weapons drawn, I would easily be able to beat her given my statistical advantage. Yet for some reason, I can't help but feel fear towards interacting with her. What if I say something strange or wrong? Wait say? I can't even speak correctly at the moment! I still rely on sign language and a note pad to convey my messages!
Squirming in the tall grass, Elfriede opened and fiddled with her menu, unaware that she has effectively rendered her Hiding Entry skill's effect null and void before it could even time out.
Where is that inventory panel!? Why did I bring so much bread with me!? Why does each bread item take up its own inventory slot!? Where is that notepad and quill!? Wait, why is that setting off!?
Frantically trying to find her writing utensils, Elfriede slips and falls forward—out of the tall grass and into the open light.
"Uuuuuuuuuuuuu…"

Valerie’s eyes seemed to have caught a figure by the fire, but as she blinked, the figure disappeared. Confused, the swashbuckler stepped closer to the fire and a section of tall grass behind the fire began to twitch and move, and out fell a level twenty three Assassin. Startled, the swashbuckler jumped back but never did she move her hands toward her weapons. Instead, her hands moved upward into a sign of truce. The girl blinked a few times, trying to make sure her eyes were working properly. Valerie stared at the girl in front of her in slight confusion before snapping out of her daze. Where are my manners? I should be asking if she’s alright. She scolded herself while another voice chimed rudely in her head. You have manners? You talk? But Valerie chose to ignore the other voice. “Mm… Are you alright?” The swashbuckler asked, her voice laced with concern as she slowly approached the other girl, offering a hand to help the girl up. “I’m sorry if I scared you.” She apologized, realized that the Assassin was most likely to be the figure by the fire that had disappeared the second she popped out of the tall grass. Valerie observed the Assassin briefly. The girl was about the same height as herself, with long black hair, fair skin which was tinted slightly red at the moment, and her eyes was almost identical to Valerie’s own violet coloured ones but a few shades lighter. The assassin had worn the typical gear for an assassin, but overall the other girl’s colour scheme was quite similar to Valerie’s dark clothes. The assassin’s weapon was a long scythe that had tumbled out of the tall grass along with its user. A scythe user… She thought to herself as she caught herself staring at the Assassin too intently and quickly averted her gaze and looked into the fire awkwardly. Words: 318 Elfriede

[attr="class","cscroll"] my eyes can see the death of everything even if that thing is god Elfriede slowly stood up and nodded at the Swashbuckler asking Elfriede if she was alright. Picking up her scythe and "sheathing" it, Elfriede, now calmer, quickly pulled out her note pad, quill pen, and ink well. On her notepad, Elfriede began to write: introducing herself, explaining her vocal situation, asking for the Swashbuckler's name, and if there is anything she can assist her with.
'My name is Elfriede. Back in the original world, I was a mute so while my vocal cords are functional in this world, I have difficulty speaking due to a lack of experience. What is your name and is there anything I can assist you with? While my gear is currently under leveled, it should be more than enough to handle the mobs in the area.'
During the writing process, due to the somewhat subpar lighting conditions, Elfriede conjured a ball of light through her Magic Light skill. However, it flickered out after thirty seconds, requiring Elfriede to wait another 10 seconds before she could continue writing.
I need to take night vision or something... Magic Light doesn't last long enough since I am not a mage class. Things would be so much easier if I had just logged on the Japanese server to take a look at the Novasphere Pioneers expansion rather than the new UK server. Then again, I don't know how it is on the Japanese servers…
After finishing the note, Elfriede ripped it out of her notebook and handed it to the Swashbuckler, before activating Magic Light again so the Swashbuckler had enough light to read the note. Despite still being a bit flustered—evidenced by how Elfriede tries to hide her face behind her notepad, blushing as her eyes peek out from above—her handwriting was incredibly neat, probably revealing this as one of her main methods of communication.
As her guest reads the first note, Elfriede begins on a second note, refreshing Magic Light whenever it goes out. 'Oh and I wouldn't worry too much about the light attracting any mobs. I had the campfire going for a decent amount of time, seeing if it would attract any predators. However, I think the nearby mobs are low enough that my current level stops them from aggroing.'
It was a remnant from when Elder Tale was a game, how most npc enemies would avoid players that had a significant level advantage over them. It was basically like a sense of fear, where prey would hide from their predators, but was based purely on numbers rather than logical sense. Elfriede's current gear was outdated so some enemies she would normally have some trouble against actually avoided her, only taking into account her level.
It really seems like the Laws of Physics and Nature were randomly jumbled together with the game's rules. Very little of it makes sense… Seriously, this world is really messed up at times. I wonder if the People of the Land only know the forty-two songs that were in the Elder Tale OST? Nah, I'm pretty sure they know other songs. It is not like they can't create music of their own right?

Valerie tilted her head as she watched the Assassin pull out some writing utensils and a magic light, and began writing and when she seemed to be finished, the other girl passed it over to the Swashbuckler so she could read it. The Assassin’s name was Elfriede, but Valerie had no idea how to say it and considering the girl’s current lack of vocal ability, the Swashbuckler had no idea how to address her later. However, that was something she will deal with later. As she read, the girl nodded in understanding as she realized Elfriede was mute in the real world. It didn’t surprise the girl much considering how many people around the world player Elder Tale.
The Dancer looked up from reading the note to see Elfriede peeking at her from behind her notebook and unsuccessfully snuffled a light giggle, and the other girl went back to writing. “I’m Valerie, but you can just address me as Val, it would probably be easier for you.” She introduced herself with a small smile before answering the Assassin’s previous question. “No, I’m quite alright, but I was just here because I was the fire.” She said, pointing to Elfriede’s fire that lighted up the area.
By the time Valerie finished speaking; Elfriede had finished writing and passed the Swashbuckler another note. “Oh… I didn’t know there were mobs around here.” The level one Swashbuckler said, her back stiffening slightly. She hadn’t known too much about this area but as a single player out in the marshland, a level one Swashbuckler against a mob didn’t sound very good. “Anyway, what have you been doing out here? I don’t suppose you enjoy the smell here.” She said jokingly, her nose crinkled, trying to block out the stench of the marshland. “Anyway, I was here because I heard of some lower level monsters were around here and was trying to find some things to kill.” She said, shrugging slightly. Considering her one kill in about two hours, she didn’t have much luck in finding monsters in the area or rather, they didn’t seem to have much luck finding the level one Swashbuckler either.
Valerie looked around before walking closer to the fire and pointed to a drier spot beside the campfire. “Do you mind if I sit?” She asked the Assassin. She might as well take a seat considering they didn’t seem to have to worry much about approaching monsters. Also, the girl was a bit worn out from walking all day in the muddy marshes, so a small break in a clean, dry-ish place seemed like a good idea to the Swashbuckler.

[attr="class","cscroll"] my eyes can see the death of everything even if that thing is god Quickly replying with a note, Elfriede wrote, 'Go ahead.'
As Elfriede began writing another note, the fauna behind her began rustling. Immediately, Elfriede drew her scythe and entered a combat position, pointing the blade towards the swamp grass. As she slowly walked towards the bushes, a frog jumped out and onto the scythe's blade.
~Ribbit~
Huh? A frog?
~Ribbit~
Having a staring contest with the frog for a couple seconds, Elfriede remained perfectly still as the frog suddenly jumped on her head. Sitting on Elfriede's head for a bit, the frog eyed a passing mosquito for a bit before sending its tongue at the bug.
'Just a frog, no need to worry,' Elfriede wrote in her notepad, showing Valerie before sitting back down on a rock near the fire, letting the frog just sit on her head.
Focusing on Valerie's previous question of, "Anyway, what have you been doing out here?" Elfriede began writing a reply. As Elfriede wrote, time to time, the frog on her head would shoot its tongue at a passing bug. Despite the potentially distracting sound and motion, Elfriede would just keep writing as if the frog wasn't there. In fact, it actually looked like having a frog on her head was calming to Elfriede.
'The goblin scouts that spawn here are one of the few low level mobs that wield weapons. At higher levels, you tend to find more and more enemies using various weapons and or tools. So the goblin scouts are good practice for future enemies. Back when this was a game, you probably could ignore these guys as they would normally be more trouble than their worth, but now that Elder Tale is what appears to be a new reality, with game rules and natural laws jumbled together randomly, knowing how to use your weapon is arguably as important as keeping your level and stats up. A few fights with the goblin scouts and I already see the weaknesses in my current weapon of choice. My scythe has decent range but as a two-handed weapon, its speed is relatively slow. Furthermore, its damage is obviously sweet spotted on the blade. A strike with the shaft won't deal anywhere near the damage that can be dealt with a strike with the blade, thus my weapon has a weakness in that enemies who can enter inside the sweet spot circle of my scythe will have a large advantage against me. Also, scythes aren't really practical weapons to begin with, so the balance feels a bit off at times. This means I have to train with my weapon until I can keep my enemies at the optimal range, find a way to deal with enemies who enter the shaft range, or simply switch to a more practical weapon. Presently, after training for a couple of days on the goblins, I feel like I should change weapon types; maybe to a one-handed sword for its ease of use and faster attack speed.'
Finishing the rather long note, Elfriede tore the note out of her notepad and handed it to Valerie while the frog on Elfriede's head stares into the distance.

When the Swashbuckler read Elfriede’s note answering her question about sitting down, the girl smiled thankfully and took a seat close to the fire pit, allowing the scent of burnt wood to fill her senses instead of the dead odor of the marshes. Valerie placed her hands out and held them close to the flickering flames, warming them up. The Thames Marshland was not too cold, but it was wet and dark, making the girl’s hands cool and clammy. She sighed softly as her hands thawed a bit and watched the Assassin write something into her notebook.
Elfriede stopped and Valerie tense up on her spot, as the grass behind the Assassin rustled. The part Asian girl drew her weapon and posed to fight whatever was behind the grass and begun to walk closer to the rustling vegetation. The Swashbuckler rose up onto her knees and drew a single weapon with her right hand, holding it defensively in front of her. She watched the Assassin stop suddenly as a soft, faded croak reached the Swashbuckler’s ears. The girl tilted her head to the side in slight confusion, unaware of where the sound came from.
When the Assassin started to move again, the girl had walked back with a frog on her head. Valerie’s mouth dropped open slightly, but she quickly closed it before mosquitos decided to find a home in the Swashbuckler’s mouth. As Elfriede passed her another note and sat down beside the girl. The note told Valerie it was only a frog, which made the girl giggle in response as she peered at the frog that sat on the Assassin’s head. Elfriede began to write again, so the brown haired girl decided to have a staring contest with the frog, who seemed to refuse to stare back and seemed to look at everything, but Valerie. Giving up, the girl looked into the soft orange flames until the Assassin handed her a long note.
Valerie’s eyes scanned the note quickly before reading more carefully a second time. It was Elfriede’s answer to the Swashbuckler’s previous question about her reason for being out here. The Assassin was out looking for goblin scouts, creatures similar to the one Valerie had fought earlier, which was a weak goblin scout, but most likely much stronger than the one that Valerie had encountered. Then the Assassin when on about the messed up laws in the world they currently lived in, merging or mixing rules from the game world and the real world. Elfriede continued and moved onto talking about her weapon, the scythe. She listed many advantages and disadvantages with using such a large weapon. Some Valerie already knew by simple assumptions, while others were things she was glad to know about. Swashbucklers don’t naturally use two handed weapons, like a scythe, since they have the ability to dual wield single handed weapons, giving more flexibly to land more hits and make smoother combos. The Assassin’s note ended with her mentioning her desire to change her weapon to, maybe a one handed sword. Valerie shook her head wistfully, remembering the Assassin’s natural ability to wield all kinds of weapons, but she was still happy with the flexibility she had as a Swashbuckler.
“Yes, a one handed sword would be faster than a two handed weapon, but it would, obviously, deal less damage per hit compared to a two handed weapon.” Valerie agreed, nodding as she gazed over the note that sat in her hands, and into the fire. “But it’s your choice to change your main weapon. I mean, I’m sure a two handed weapon could come into use at times.” The Swashbuckler reminded the Assassin optimistically, smiling softly. “But in the end, it is your choice if you feel more comfortable fighting with a two handed weapon or a one handed weapon, because if you’re uncomfortable fighting, then that is no good.” She concluded with a shrug of her shoulders.

Writing another note, Elfriede added onto the flaws of the scythe. 'Though the largest flaw in scythes, is the awkward blade shape where the sharp end is towards the bottom of the weapon. Even if you sharped the top side of the blade as well, the shape still has a strange feeling with its weight distribution. This effect may be mitigated through counter weights, stat distribution at higher levels, and practice, but at the moment I can't get the feel for it. As for two-handed weapons, I don't mind them. Their damage is larger to make up for their slow speed, but there is more to weapons than just their damage and speed. For example: in some servers, different weapons have different critical damage modifiers. The two-handed weapons have a lower critical damage multiplier whereas smaller weapons like one-handed swords and especially daggers can have much higher critical damage multiplier. Of course, I don't know what the critical damage modifiers on this server is or if the modifier was kept when the game rules and natural laws were jumbled together. However, this is one definite difference between a two-handed weapon and a one-handed weapon: weight. There are some assassin builds they do use large heavy weapons as a way of sustaining a high but steady damage per second, but the build I am looking at a build focuses more on agile movements while aiming for that one singular burst damage hit. This means I have to remain agile and mobile so the weight of a heavy two-handed weapon can slow me down. This may not matter at higher levels where my stats—specifically Strength—can more than compensate for the added weight, but at my current level, the added weight does feel like it is slowing me down. Each swing also takes more out of my stamina as well. Unlike when Elder Tale was a game—where we just sit at our computers—we are actively moving our entire bodies. While our Adventurer bodies are definitely stronger and more resilient than the bodies we had before, we still have a finite amount of stamina and we do feel fatigue. A smaller and lighter weapon would take less energy to use and would allow for longer fights thus making them potentially more viable for exploring unknown areas. Of course this is, again, possible to counteract at higher levels but at my current level, I simply do not have the stats to do so. At a higher level—especially if it turns out the critical damage modifier isn't what I believe it to be—I may switch back to the heavier two-handed weapons to deal heavier hits, but I do feel that it would be best for my style if I used a smaller weapon. Plus, it kinds of looks ridiculous for someone of my stature to be using large weapons. I'm not exactly the tallest person.'

Finishing another long note, Elfriede handed it to Valerie, blushing a bit as she is somewhat embarrassed by her small size, especially since her original height is practically the same as her current short self.

When the other girl seemed to take in Valerie’s words, she started writing again and the Swashbuckler simply waited quietly beside the girl, enjoying the silent company she had. Though she was not much of a talker, Valerie was rather glad that the Assassin seemed to have a lot to say, or rather write. The Dancer begun to hum a soft melody as she waited, swaying from side to side and closed her eyes as she sank into the song.
~Ribbit~
Valerie jumped slightly from her spot as her song was briefly disturbed by the frog that sat on Elfriede’s head. The girl turned to glare at the creature before continued her song as if she was never disturbed, but then the Assassin handed her a long note, even longer than the one before. The girl’s dark violet eyes widened at the sighted as she took the note and glanced over it quickly, realizing just how long it was. “Wow… It’s really long.” She said, still mildly stunned, but quickly added on. “But I don’t mind, just let me read it.” She told the Assassin in a soft voice, letting her know that she didn’t mind reading her long notes. It was Elfriede’s way of communication, and Valerie accepted it wholeheartedly. The girl let her eyes rest on the note as she read it carefully. The Assassin had pointed out the flaws in her weapon, the odd shape of the curved blade and the imbalance of the weapon, probably considering how the blade would be heavier than the pole it was attached to. Then the girl went on about damage modifiers that differed between one handed weapons and two handed weapons. Apparently, it was different on different servers, which made Valerie assume she had previously played on a different server of the game, Elder Tale, before the Catastrophe. She seemed to know quite a bit about the game world, which Valerie had only entered a few times before being drawn into the game. The next few sentences made little to no sense to Valerie, until she mentioned the weight difference between a one handed weapon and a two handed weapon. The Assassin said that she wanted to make her build based to agility and speed, a Swashbuckler’s natural bonus, but she would use it for the single powerful strike, like an Assassin, instead of making combo chains, like a Swashbuckler. A large two handed weapon, like the Assassin’s scythe, would slow her down because it actually had a weight now that they were living in Elder Tale. Then the note continued to talk about the scythe’s flaws, the way it can easily drain her stamina and reduce her speed. When it was just a game, anyone could choose any weapon without having to care about the logistics of personally wielding the weapon since they control the character from behind a computer which will automatically obey any commands given by the user. A lighter weapon would be easier to maintain and control in a fight, or when exploring unknown areas, like Elfriede had mentioned. If a mission required fighting in a small space, wielding a large two handed polearm, like a scythe would put the user at a great disadvantage. She mentioned how her level was not high enough to have the strength stats that would counteract the difficulties wielding a scythe. But at the moment, Elfriede seemed to want to try out a one handed weapon, adding on at the end that it would be rather strange to see someone of her height holding a large scythe.
At her last statement, Valerie giggled softly and slowly went over the note to say or add on to anything. “Yes, the scythe has a very strange shape compared to a spear or any other polearm. But maybe you can find someone to craft you a scythe, one that has a lighter blade which may make it more balanced.” She suggested as she eyed the weapon that the Assassin had previously wielded. “Is that a starter weapon?” The level one Swashbuckler asked, unsure about the level of the blade.
“And yes, smaller weapons take less energy to use.” Valerie said, slight amusement seeping into her voice as she pointed to her own weapons. “I know… You switch to a one handed weapon, it would probably be not much of a problem considering your class, but you will have to know how to use it first. What kind of one handed weapon are you thinking of?” The girl asked curiously before adding on quickly to bring up the Assassin’s last statement about height. “And yes, a smaller weapon would suit people like us a bit better.” She said with a small grin appearing on her face. “It would be quite intimidating to others when they see someone like us wield a weapon bigger than us.” The Swashbuckler said jokingly. “But it’s definitely not very practical.” Valerie said bitterly. It would definitely be quite amusing to see a small girl, like Elfriede, wielding her large scythe and beating up various different monsters.

[attr="class","cscroll"] my eyes can see the death of everything even if that thing is god "Is that a starter weapon?"
Elfriede shook her head in response to Valerie's question.
'It's a stock weapon crafted by the People of the land, Windsor Antiqua Scythe. It's only level five so there isn't too much of a difference between it and the Starter Scythe.'
A closer inspection of Elfriede's scythe would show a decent amount of battle wear: nicks and scratches can be seen all over the blade, a faint crack rides across the blade, and no reflection can be seen from metal. Elfriede had been through multiple fights with this weapon, hunting goblin after goblin and the many battles have taken their toll on her weapon. However, a simple trip to a blacksmith for repairs would return it to pristine conditions once more.
Continuing her note, 'Excuse the damage, I haven't been able to find the time to return to Londinium to get it repaired. As for the weapon I am intending to switch to…"
Handing the interrupted note to Valerie, Elfriede opened her menu and pulled out a rather ornate one-handed sword. If one were to check its status, they would see that it is a player created weapon, designated as a One-Handed Rune Blade, named Excalibur Proto Replica. The ornate golden blade, decorated by blue enamel was kept in an equally exquisite scabbard. However, while the blade shined brilliantly in the fire, there was still something off about it. Something just felt fake about it when you look at the ornate blade, yet it was something that was impossible to describe—something that you just can't put your finger on. A person's intuition just somehow tells them that the blade is merely an imitation—a fact the weapon's name confirms with the word "Replica".
'A blacksmith was creating weapons for free to celebrate a special occasion of some sort. I didn't get the specifics, but I couldn't pass on the chance to get a decent weapon. It's a custom weapon of a new type that acts as both a one-handed sword and a grimoire so it has some minor ranged abilities. My subclass is also currently Scribe so it works quite well for me. The only issue is that it is a level thirty weapon so my current level is too low to use it; it seems that the level requirement rule still applies.
As for my familiarity with one-handed swords, I took some Fencing lessons when my family lived in Britain and Kendo while living in Japan, before moving back to Britain for college. While Excalibur Proto Replica is definitely different from the rapiers I am used to using, I find its versatility as both a reliable slashing and thrusting weapon to be more useful. Plus, if I hold it in two hands, it actually does feel a bit similar to the shinai swords I used in kendo. In terms of familiarity, this is probably one of the best fits for me due to my prior experiences with similar weapons. Of course, my experiences only used the weapons for sport rather than actual combat so I know I still have a lot to learn when it comes to combat, but at the very least I will have a foundation to improve upon.'
~Ribbit~
As Elfriede handed Valerie the second note, the frog on Elfriede's head shot its tongue at a mosquito and ate it. Shortly afterwards, Elfriede can be seen petting it as if she intended to keep it as a pet.
I'll think I'll name it Slippy!

The Assassin shook her head in response to Valerie’s previous question. It was apparently a weapon that was crafted by the People of the Land. It was called a Windsor Antiqua Scythe and was a level five weapon. Valerie leaned closer to look at the large black weapon and carefully stroked the blade of the scythe. The blade was rather dull and nicked, but would pass for a few more battles, before it would become more of a blunt weapon, than a bladed weapon.
Elfriede handed the Swashbuckler another note, which the girl read quickly. It was about the wear and tears in the weapon. Valerie waved it off but her eyes narrowed in mild confusion as the Assassin’s short note ended. When the Dancer turned to her girl beside her, she noticed that the Assassin had taken out a one handed sword from her inventory. It looked like nothing Valerie had ever seen before. The gold blade was shining brightly in the light of the fire, seeming almost alive, filled with fire. It looked like a beautiful sword, but something was slightly off. It almost seemed too nice, too perfect. Valerie tilted her head to the side as she observed the weapon carefully, confused of why she was feeling this way about the perfect weapon.
Then the Assassin handed the other girl a long note, which she took. Reluctantly, she took her eyes off the weapon and read the note. The sword was made by a blacksmith who was giving out free weapons for some special occasion. Elfriede didn’t know much about the event, but used it to get a new weapon. The blade was a new type of weapon, a mixed between a one handed sword and a magic weapon, a grimorie. Elfriede’s subclass is a Scribe, so the weapon would suit her. However, Valerie had no idea how the two would connect. She had a very limited understanding about magic and never tampered much into it. The problem the Assassin faced was that the new weapon was a level thirty weapon and her current level didn’t allow the use of a higher level weapon.
The note was separated into two sections, the first about the golden blade and the second about her experience with one handed swords. The girl had lived in Japan and Britain for quite some time, enough to learn two new sports, Kendo and Fencing. From the way the Assassin worded it, it seemed as if she originated from Britain but lived in Japan for a few years before moving back for post-secondary education. Perhaps the girl was about the same age as Valerie herself, as she was in Britain for school as well. Anyhow, Elfriede mention how different was different for the rapiers she would use when fencing, as a one handed sword could be used for both slashing and thrusting, while rapiers focus mainly on thrusting. She considering holding the one handed weapon with two hands, like how she would with the swords she used in Kendo. Considering the Assassin’s previous knowledge about swords, Valerie nodded in agreement as she considering it one of the most suitable weapons for the Assassin. The note ended with her talking about having to practice using the weapon for combat in Elder Tale instead of sport. The Swashbuckler simply chuckled before turning to the girl.
“To be completely honest, once you have the desire to fight the monster, you will most likely automatically use your skills from fencing and kendo while you fight.” She said, rather amused. “Fight or flight.” The girl said softly, repeating a phrase she often heard from her teacher in Psychology when she took that class in high school. Then Valerie simply shrugged her shoulders before staring back into the dancing flames. “In real life, I had never done any sports like Kendo or fencing, but I had always had an interest in weapons. But that came behind my love for dance.” The girl told Elfriede, almost embarrassed that she had no previous fighting experience prior to the Catastrophe. “Dance had helped me quickly develop different fighting styles. I had spent most of my first days in Elder Tale just watching people fight, and I simply copy things I see. It’s like learning new chorography for me.” Valerie said, getting lost in her memories of dance, before she realized what she had said. “Sorry if that made no sense.” She said, laughing awkwardly as she tilted her head back and stared up into the sky. Her inexperience with talking to people hasn’t seemed to improve much as her mouth seemed to run when it had the chance. The girl sighed softly and she mental scolded herself for not holding herself back.

[attr="class","cscroll"] my eyes can see the death of everything even if that thing is god Elfriede shook her head when Valerie said, "Sorry if that made no sense." Dance movements can be applied to combat with some adjustments. Fluid movement is often key when it comes to combat and dancing itself can hone a number of skills useful for combat, timing for example.
Immediately, Elfriede began writing again, 'It is not too farfetched to adapt dancing into combat. After all, it can be a rather taxing activity on your stamina. Depending on the event, some dances can last for many hours and would likely require you to focus on efficiency to minimize your stamina consumption. The same can be said for many other sports and combat. Conserving your stamina is vital.
I also believe that dancing often use rather fluid movements, and your range of movements is definitely increased in this reality. With our bodies regulated by our stats and level, you can probably take full advantage of the various movements that you know of and adapt them into your personal fighting style that can offer both efficiency and unpredictability.
I am also sure that when you dance with or against someone, you try to read their movements a bit, try to predict what they will do next so you can respond accordingly. The same is often done in combat as well. Being able to predict your opponent allows you to capitalize on any mistakes they may make.
Of course, this is all just my personal theory based from observation so sorry if I got anything wrong. I never really danced before, always too shy.'
Handing Valerie the note, Elfriede felt a little strange. She was opening up to someone. Back in reality, she was a deathly shy mute, unable to really get close to anyone. It was different when she was behind a computer screen with the mask of anonymity, but there was no such thing in reality. With Elder Tale now a reality, Elfriede lost that mask and had been, for the most part, alone in this strange world. This wasn't to say she never communicated with others before, by the contrary she had communicated many times with others, but she limited herself while doing so. She never really went out of her way to open up to someone. Elfriede was never really up for talking about herself, but for some reason, she wanted to right now.
She seems close to my age as well. Though, it is hard to be sure in this world due to the nature of our bodies and Elder Tale's previous existence as a MMO.
'If it isn't too much to ask, could you tell me more about yourself? I haven't had any contact with people for quite some time. Nor have I ever had a conversation that wasn't focused on our current situation or Elder Tale since coming here. Ever since the Apocalypse happened, I have just been focused on gathering info, leveling up, and strengthening my gear; I guess I just sort of want a moment to really just relax for a bit. Of course I'll answer any questions you have about myself that you may have as well.'

As she was mentally scolding herself, the Assassin began to write again, but Valerie had not noticed and continued to internally bash herself. How could you do such a thing? When Elfriede’s note popped into the Swashbuckler field of view, the girl jumped slightly in surprise and slowly moved her hand to take the note from the Assassin. Nervously, the girl started to read the other’s note and immediately relaxed. The Assassin seemed to see how dancing could be adapted into combat. She talked about how the stamina required for dance, as well as many other sports, can be beneficial in combat. Valerie agreed with Elfriede, nodding to herself as she read. While in some dance competitions, one’s performance could be as short as three minutes, but the practice for those three minutes required many hours at a time, multiple times a day.
The note continued onto talking about the movements of dance. Dancing had required flexibility in your body and bending and twisting in ways that are not normally possible as well as being aware and exercising control over your body. Each movement or even holding a static position requires control over every single muscle and being aware of how you look without actually seeing yourself in a mirror. It would be extremely useful if one could instinctively know how you appear as you can manipulate it however you desire, whether to make yourself appear nervous and wary or proud and haughty, letting your body language take over half of the manipulation and your words and expressions do the rest.
And that led to the next block of words that talked about reading movements. It was incredibly amusing for Valerie to watch someone who is completely unaware of their bodily movements while they attempt to lie. While reading movements were useful, in dance, improvisation was basically an unofficial mandatory skill. Improvisation is simply useful in any situation, especially in combat. One would always need a back-up plan, and if the back-up plan fails, one will have to make up another one on the spot. If you don’t, you die. It is as simple as that.
At the end of her note, the Assassin asked Valerie to tell her about herself. Elfriede had been alone for quite a while and most of her few conversations she had were about the crisis of the Apocalypse. At the end, the girl also stated that she would answer any questions that Valerie had for her. As the Swashbuckler finished the note, she began to nod slowly, thinking about where to start.
“So, I guess I can start about my past before Elder Tale…” The girl started off sheepishly, laughing lightly before continuing. “Well, I was actually born in Canada and had spent most of my life there. I had temporarily moved after high school to attend London Contemporary Dance School to get my BA before heading back to Canada to get my MFA at one of the universities back at home. But I never got to go back home as I was stuck in this game in the middle of my third and final year of schooling. I had played Elder Tale back at home on the North American server, but I only a level five Swashbuckler, because I didn’t play often even though I enjoyed it greatly. While living in London because of school, I had completely forgotten about the game and when I heard about them releasing a version with Great Britain as the main setting, I was excited to see how it looked. So I had purchased it and ended up here.” The girl said shrugging her shoulders, sighing softly as she thought about what else to tell the dark haired girl in front of her.
“Mmmm… In Canada, I lived with my parents and I don’t have any siblings so my friends easily became family to me.” Valerie said, her voice softening as she recalled her friends back at home. She had a small group of friends in London, but she still missed her childhood friends. “But I was never a very… friendly person.” The girl said, laughing lightly at herself for phrasing the words so oddly and then continued, “Or rather I wasn’t a people loving person and often keep to myself, avoiding people.”
Not sure what else to say the girl sat in silence for a few moments before asking the Assassin a question. “What else would you like to know about me?” Valerie asked, tilted her head to the side. She waited patiently until she received some sort of answer and would answer it before asked a question about Elfriede. “So were you born in Great Britain?” Valerie asked the other.

[attr="class","cscroll"] my eyes can see the death of everything even if that thing is god “What else would you like to know about me?”
Elfriede thought about that question for a bit before replying with a note, 'Nothing in specific really, I just want to know you a bit better.
“So were you born in Great Britain?”
So I guess I have to start talking about my past now… Well I did ask her about hers so it is only fair.
'Yes, I was born in Great Britain, but when I was thirteen I moved to Japan. As for Elder Tale, I started playing it shortly afterwards, on the Japanese servers of course. As you can tell, I am a bit socially awkward—having been a mute and all. I had a level ninety Summoner and a level sixty swashbuckler there, but I sort of stopped playing after moving back to Great Britain. My guild on the Japanese server disbanded too; everyone just sort of got busy with life. I logged in time to time to chat with some old friends who log in time to time for the same reason, but the distance between Great Britain and Japan makes playing a bit difficult due to lag. Plus, I was busy with school. I was attending my first year at Oxford when I heard a new server was being launched here with the new expansion, Novasphere Pioneers. While I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't bring over my old characters, I was somehow able to make find some friends at Oxford to join the game with me. I guess you can figure out what happened after that. My friends and I decided to split paths for a while, explore this place a bit more.
If you have anything more specific that you want to ask, feel free. I don't really know how to continue.'

“Nothing in specific really, I just want to know you a bit better.” Was what was written on Elfriede’s short note that answered Valerie’s previous question. “Oh, alright then…” The girl trailed off before asking about where the Assassin was from and the other girl began to write. As the Swashbuckler waited patiently, she began to wonder what else to tell the girl. Soon, Elfriede was finished writing and handed her the note and she began to read it. The small Assassin was born in Great Britain, but had moved to Japan in her teens. There she had begun to play Elder Tale on the Japanese servers and had two accounts, both with a very high level. A level ninety Summoner and a level sixty Swashbuckler. Valerie’s eyes widened in amazement at the other girl’s achievements. Wow, she must have really enjoyed the game. Valerie concluded to herself and continued to read. Elfriede was in a guild on that server, but when she left for Britain, it had disbanded due to the member’s busy lifestyles. As for herself, the girl had stopped playing when she moved back and only went back on to chat with friends on the rare occasion but it was difficult due to the lag that was caused by the distance between Britain and Japan. Elfriede was in her first year in Oxford when the new server was launched. Assuming she didn’t take a break in between her education, she is probably about two years younger than me. Valerie concluded with a shrug. Guess ages of other characters in Elder Tale was quite a challenge as one could not simply guess by looking at a character’s appearance, as some were using characters of the opposite gender. Anyhow, the Assassin was not able to use her characters from the Japanese server on the new server so she created a new one and joined the game with some of her friends from Oxford, unlike Valerie who was completely alone, or rather she didn’t know who her friends were if they had joined. However, even though the girl had friends in the beginning, they had parted ways and that resulted in Elfriede being alone. The Assassin ended her note with another chance for Valerie to ask any other questions as she also seemed to be stumped on how to continue. With a small smile, the Swashbuckler placed the stack of notes that the Assassin had given to her in her lap and opened up her menu and began to fiddle around with the controls. A slight frown appeared on her face as she tried to figure out how it worked. After a few long seconds of tapping, the girl made one final tap and sent a friend request to the Assassin in front of her. Looking up, she smiled at Elfriede. “Are you planning to stay here for a couple more days? If you’re not, would you like to join me for… perhaps, dinner back in Londinium?” Valerie asked as she stretched her arms up above her head and yawns lightly before promptly dropping her arms to her by her side as she waited for a response.
