During one of her walks through Londenium, Caerbannog found herself in the marketplace once again. Perhaps it was curiosity that took her there, perhaps it was fate... or maybe, just maybe, she always got lost and ended up going around in circles. It was a bit difficult to be vertically challenged in such a crowd after all. But this and that hardly mattered; what mattered was the girl’s sudden interest in a small stall. It was lined up along with other stalls that sold fresh produce, or at least, Elder Tale’s version of such things.
“ Hello there, little girl. Did you come here with your mother? “ a kind-looking old man, most probably a lander, approached Caerbannog.
Not wanting to sound rude even to an NPC, the samurai let that slide. Instead of retorting, she simply pointed to herself and said “Chef”.
“ Oh! You’re an adventurer! “ the old man said, “ I have a lot of fresh ingredients here. Maybe you’ll find something that you can use! “
While the samurai checked through the produce, the lander pointed to a nearby stall.
“ And that place sells some chef utensils, “ he said.
Caerbannog merely nodded at the lander. She then pointed at some kind of white meat that looked similar to what she used for cooking in the real world. It looked like chicken, smelled like chicken- it must be chicken, she thought. The chef purchased just enough to make one meal, and then she politely thanked the lander while using as few words as she could. On her way to the other stalls, Caerbannog stopped by the one which sold tools and she bought a beginner set. A small covered pot, a frying pan, a knife, a chopper, a chopping board, a wooden spoon, a wooden spatula and a flintstone; they seemed to be easily replaceable, but they’d do for now, she thought.
A little way further, she found someone who sold seasonings and oil which she purchased as well. She mixed salt, pepper, rosemary and garlic powder with finely-grounded bread crumbs. The cooking oil seemed okay, nothing special but it should be usable for her purposes. After her stroll through the marketplace, Caerbannog faded away from the vendors’ view. She looked for a less busy place where she could practice her cooking. A place that she could call home in Londenium would have been nice, but at the moment, she was just a stranger in a strange land.

In one of the empty alleys, fairly neat but deserted, Caerbannog sat down and readied her cooking set. She had acquired some water for washing the ingredients, and some wooden bowls and plates. She had overheard from some other players that using the in-game recipes would result to the same tasteless crap that was already available in the game. Therefore, the samurai wanted to try out making her own recipes. Frying was not a complicated cooking method in real life, and so she decided to practice that in the game.
Kyuu washed the white meat which she had bought from the kind, old lander. Before the Catastrophe, she’d have thought it strange to have to wash ingredients for a crafting recipe. But Elder Tale was her reality at the moment, and one ought to be careful and treat it as such. That made the girl wonder if things such as viruses and bacteria existed in that world, apart from the programmed ‘disease’ and ‘poison’ statuses. Or perhaps the dish would simply taste bad if the ingredients were not washed beforehand. Either way, as a precaution, the chef cleaned the ingredients thoroughly; she even picked at the mix of seasonings and made sure that the cooking oil was as clear as it should be.
Next, she cut up the white meat in small rectangular pieces. The girl was, after all, planning to make something similar to chicken nuggets. In the real world, she used none of the store-bought junk; instead, Kyuu used to buy chicken fillet which she would cut up, season, and fry to create her own nuggets. She then looked at the meat which she just cut up and wondered if it really was chicken. And if it wasn’t, where did it come from? How did the landers acquire it? Landers had their strong points after all- was her conclusion.
While she was wondering about the origin of that white meat, the chef rolled it around in the seasoning then set it aside on a clean plate. Once the preparation of ingredients was done, Caerbannog covered it so that it would not get dirty while she started a fire. Some sticks set ablaze with her flint, safely managed in a circle of stones did the trick. Soon she had a pan with oil on an open fire, and a few moments later, she was ready to actually fry the questionable little buggers.

Caerbannog simply put the seasoned meat in the boiling oil. Now, the trick was to manage the flames so that it would not overheat the oil, otherwise the nuggets would be cooked on the outside while still raw on the inside. The chef removed some of the burning sticks to lessen the heat beneath the frying pan. She used the spatula to turn the nuggets over from time to time, checking if they were being cooked evenly. Soon, the smell of the seasonings wafted through the air; it meant that her dish was almost ready.
The girl checked which nuggets were done and which still needed to be cooked longer. The former, she took out of the pan and they were put on a plate; the latter were soon joined by the rest of the uncooked nuggets. While she waited for all of the pieces to be cooked, Caerbannog put away her unused cooking implements. It did not take long for the nuggets to be well-done, as they should be. The chef stored away her tools afterwards and prepared to eat that nice meal. Before she dug into the questionable nuggets, Caerbannog noticed that she had cut them up into strange shapes. Some looked like dinosaurs, others looked like mini gunpla, and the rest looked like letters of the alphabet. The taste was okay, and so the samurai thought nothing of the strange appearance. She then stored the rest of what she cooked. It was to be used for later consumption.
