Equipped: Starter Chainmail | Starter Nodachi (2H) - :: - Skill: Denkosekka (Buff - Inactive) The sun shone brightly overhead as a dark-haired girl sped through the overgrown lands of Savill Flower Grove. Her sole weapon was a very ordinary nodachi, the starter kind, to be precise. Her armor was similarly plain, nothing but the starter gear and the obligatory tank’s chainmail over it. Creatures that hid beneath the underbrush scampered away, wary of adventurers like her. But she was not out looking for a random, pointless fight- no. Caerbannog was searching for the source of a scream for help which she heard just moments ago.
She did not know exactly from where the sound originated, just its general direction. The samurai was not even sure what she’d be up against, or if the scream for help came from a lander or a fellow adventurer- or even if it came from either which one. In any case, it sounded as if someone needed help, and so the girl ran off without putting much thought into it. But as the sun’s rays touched her skin, its warmth made her look around; she’d gone so far off from the Greatwood and was somewhere in the Flower Grove. Overgrown plants stretched far and wide; as she looked around, the girl noticed a man dragging a young boy by the arm.
“ Help! Someone! “ the boy cried while he struggled to free himself from the man’s grasp.
Quickly, Caerbannog dashed towards those two figures. Though her nodachi was still in its saya, she placed her left hand just below the guard and used her thumb to lift it a little out of its sheath. The man noticed the black-haired girl soon enough and he seemed to have quickened his pace. The boy delayed him by flailing and attempting to get down on the ground though. The girl was smaller than both figures and surely a full-grown man would not so easily back down from someone like her, it wouldn’t make sense. That is, unless the man was a lander.
Unlike adventurers, landers were not as combat proficient and it would require much time and effort from them to replicate what adventurers could do. Caerbannog, who was armed with a sword while wearing a chainmail, had been identified by the man as a tank-type adventurer. He did not want to go up against her, but soon enough the girl caught up to the pair.
“ HEY - ! “ the girl was feeling bold, “ What are you doing to him?! “
That required much, much effort on her part. Her heartbeat pounded heavily in her chest. If the man was an adventurer, she would be in trouble. The girl heard that Player Killing was possible in Elder Tale after all, though beyond that, she knew next to nothing. As for the boy in tow, she was not sure about his relationship to the man; he could be the man’s son, for all she knew. But something in the boy’s plea made it sound as if he really was in trouble, and certainly needed help.
“ He said he’d pay me if I worked in his part of the grove! “ the younger lander suddenly yelled, his brown eyes were afraid and his voice almost squeaked, “ But now he’s kicking me out! “
“ Get outta here, girl, “ the man growled as he turned and stared down the samurai, “ Tis none of your business. “

Equipped: Starter Chainmail | Starter Nodachi (2H) - :: - Skill: Denkosekka (Buff - Inactive) The world of Elder Tale was in crisis, and there were still people who would exploit their fellowmen instead of helping them or treating them fairly? Caerbannog would have none of it. She stared right back at the man who was trying to stare her down. If there was anything she was good at aside from gaming, it would be a staring contest. She’d done it so many times against Ryuu, and won quite a lot of them too. Without blinking at all, she looked right at the much taller, much larger, possibly middle-aged auburn-haired green-eyed man and her stare pierced right into his soul.
“ Who the hell do you think you are?! “ the older lander suddenly growled, and then he pushed the brown eyed boy to the side.
Caerbannog had not noticed it earlier, but the man turned out to be armed with a lander tool or weapon. He had a small axe on his belt, possibly something for hacking down shrubs and weeds. Whether he did it to threaten her or perhaps he actually meant to use it, the girl was not sure- but soon the man pulled the hand axe from his belt and was at the ready for something. Kyuu wondered if she should attack; he could just be trying to scare her off.
The man’s next move made his intentions as clear as day. He raised the tool over his head, and from then on it was no longer just a tool but a weapon. He quickly brought it down upon the girl’s head, but owing to her adventurer designation, her reactions and movements were faster than the man’s. Immediately, her wolf ears and tail appeared; at that, the attacker’s eyes widened. He knew about the Wolf Hair race and their capabilities, but his fury outweighed his logic. Caerbannog stuck her nose in someone else’s business, and that someone now wanted her to pay with her life.
Kyuu simply stepped backwards to avoid the direct attack, and when she was sure of her footing, the girl drew her weapon. From the draw itself, she quickly used that momentum to slash at the man’s hand. He narrowly avoided it by moving his arm out of the way. If he was a second later, she would have injured him significantly. With that one counterattack right from the moment that she drew her sword, the samurai dictated the pace of the fight. Her lander opponent backed off a little while the boy, who had fallen to the ground earlier, notably kept his distance from the two.
“ Listen, kid, I’ll count to three and let you leave with your life- “ the man growled at Kyuu, his green eyes fierce.
“ Same to you, “ Caerbannog simply replied as she pointed her nodachi at her opponent.
The man gritted his teeth. He was seething with rage. He was in the wrong- the lander, right from the start, had not intended to pay the poor boy who worked all morning on one part of the overgrown grove. He figured that no one would bother to bug him about it, and that the boy would be too afraid to speak up against him. But he was so wrong; the boy not only demanded to be paid, but he also wanted to be paid then and there. And now, the man had to deal with a little girl who thought herself quite the hero.

Equipped: Starter Chainmail | Starter Nodachi (2H) - :: - Skill: Denkosekka (Buff - Inactive) With her lander opponent a short distance away, Caerbannog was able to move into a more solid stance. She put her right foot forward, held the nodachi securely with both hands, and pointed the tip of the blade at her opponent; the weapon’s edge faced the earth. For a moment, the man seemed to reconsider his actions as a strong wind blew across the Flower Grove. That wind kicked up some dry leaves and loose plant material, and the younger lander had to cover his face.
Perhaps the man expected her to react like that boy; perhaps it was the opportunity that he waited for. Right when the samurai turned her head down a little, she noticed that her opponent’s legs advanced. She could not see the placement of his feet what with the dense undergrowth, but his legs which advanced gave his movements away. It was nothing like a martial arts movie where a genius fighter could predict their opponent’s move, not at all. Being an adventurer, Caerbannog was simply quicker to move and react if compared to the lander.
The girl did not take a chance by attacking him directly as well. Instead, she angled her arms so that her nodachi would rise up in front of her face, with its blade pointed sideways and that move blocked the incoming axe. The lander weapon’s metal clashed against the starter nodachi, and its wielder tried to bring the blade down upon Caerbannog’s face. But the girl would have none of that. She wasn't about to die against a person like him. While the hilt was held in place by her right hand, her left hand pulled it downward so that the edge would be pushed upward. The small axe soon slid against the inclining adventurer weapon until it hit the hilt guard. Once that dangerous bit of the lander tool hit the wider part of her weapon, Caerbannog pushed back with all her might.
Surprised by the short girl’s strength, the lander almost fell backwards as his axe fell out of his hand. He managed to remain upright but his weapon had already fallen to the ground. The man cursed under his breath and looked at the younger lander. He had intended to drag the boy out of the Grove so that he would not bother the man anymore, but at that moment, the samurai was a bigger concern. But unbeknownst to him, the lander did not have to be concerned about his one life for the girl knew about that. In fact, she’d been debating whether she should just walk away and suggest that the lander boy find a better employer, or just knock the man out. Killing him was not among her options.
After that counterattack, Caerbannog fell back to the attacking stance. Once again, the tip of her blade was pointed at the man’s face as if daring him to move in. His weapon was lost, but he could have other tools or weapons on him, so the girl did not drop her guard. She thought it an act of cowardice with a low possibility of occurring but suddenly, the older lander turned his back to her and then he ran off.
“ HEY! “ the lander boy yelled, “ He’s getting away! “
Caerbannog wondered if the boy was stupid or just really determined to earn some money. She’d just gotten him out of trouble, and now he’s chasing that very same trouble? The samurai sighed as her left hand let go of the nodachi’s hilt. Meaning to finish what she started, Caerbannog ran across the Grove once more, at that point with the unsheathed nodachi by her right side. She was going to chase that horrible lander to the ends of that world.

The chase ended abruptly when some landers, who noticed the pursued man, came to his aid. With their own tools and weapons, a group of five armed men ran into the grove to intercept their acquaintance’s pursuer. But when they saw who it was... just a lander boy and an even shorter girl armed with a nodachi, the men began to laugh. The unkind lander tried to convince his co-workers that Caerbannog was after his life, but the smarter ones reasoned that if an adventurer really wanted him dead, then he would have already died out in the grove. At that, the samurai sheathed her weapon and the boy stepped forward.
“ He didn’t pay me for all my work! “ the young lander crossly said.
Now the situation was reversed. The unkind lander received mean looks from his acquaintances, as if he’d just done a great injustice- which he really did. To add to his problems, a middle-aged woman appeared from behind some makeshift sheds. She worriedly looked at the boy but was not sure of the situation, thus she just waved at her son.
“ Momma! “ said the lander boy, and he ran off to tell his mother about what happened.
Cornered, Caerbannog’s opponent walked towards the boy and his mother, hopefully to settle the issue. But before the samurai walked away, she noticed that the vile lander shot an angry look at her. Perhaps someday, he would try to get his revenge but at that moment, his acquaintances simply asked the adventurer to let them handle the situation. She bowed politely and headed out of the Grove, back towards the main road and onwards to Londenium.
The road was wide and the trip was short. She felt so sure of herself after having done something which she thought was a noble deed. But still, she knew that she had to toughen up, not to trust people so easily, to be simply respectful yet not gullible. Still not ready to be amongst many strangers, Caerbannog looked for a small, broken down building where she could spend the night. It would be cold and lonely, but she had to get used to that.

A lone beam from Elder Tale’s moon slipped through the broken roof of an old building and shone upon a single figure in the room. The figure was that of a girl, smaller than others of her age both in real life and in the game turned reality. As if the room was not small enough, the girl was curled up beneath a thin blanket which was actually nothing more than a discarded old cloak; her pretty little head crowned with pitch black strands rested upon the cold ground. Partially hidden beneath the blanket was a small frenmic rabbit clutched close to the girl’s chest. She slept soundly and dreamt, or perhaps relived, the moments of her life when she was safely sleeping in her own bedroom.
Surrounded by many plushies of various shapes and sizes, but none too close to a real animal, Kyuu used to sleep soundly in a little house in urban Germany. That house, apart from herself, was her father’s treasure for he built it after many long years of working nine to five, oftentimes with overnight work too. It was one of the few things which the girl’s selfish mother was unable to whisk away when she filed a terribly one-sided divorce. But the girl’s dream, or memories, did not go far back to the incident of separation; it merely focused on the serenity of her own personal space.
There was just enough room for three one-meter-high shelves, a computer table with a customized computer tower, a massive LED TV mounted upon the wall and a small bed that was about three-fourths plushie and one-fourth actual bed. One shelf was filled with books and comics, mostly read once or twice; the other two shelves had various computer games, some played many times while the rest were barely touched. The drawers of the computer table were full of controllers and game systems, but only one system was used frequently. Oddly enough, though the girl was the only gamer in the house, there were two controllers which seemed to have been used extensively. Did she play Versus mode by herself?
Suddenly, the dream switched its view and settled upon the girl’s bed. It was a cozy, serene place where a child would have found solace. Super-deformed cats and dogs, pandas, cows, sheep, frogs, turtles, the obligatory teddy bears- all sat quietly upon the soft covers. The cover itself was a colorful quilt which depicted various cakes and candies. And the bed was probably just a wee bit fluffier than the mint green carpet which cushioned many an accident of tripping, tumbling, falling and perhaps some intentional roughhousing too. The bedroom was a contradiction of sorts, but it was the girl’s perfect little world; a world which started with a simple black rabbit plushie named Kuromimi.
Surely it was a memory then, and no longer just a dream; when the girl was very young and she was whisked away by her soulless mother to one of her social parties, she picked up the flu from one of the adults. Being such a young child, the illness rapidly worsened and before the girl realized what was happening, she already found herself in a completely white hospital toom, tended to by complete strangers. Her mother had more important places to be of course, like the birthday party of her friend’s cousin’s next-door neighbor. In her loneliness and fear, the girl began to shy away from the world and at such a young age… she wanted it all to end. But a lone black rabbit plushie appeared one night and she found it in her arms the following morning. Apparently her father, who’d been away to work for so long, had spent the night to watch over her and left that rabbit in his stead when work once again called him away.
When the girl was all well and was taken back home, she and the rabbit were inseparable. Years passed and all she had was that one rabbit, Kuromimi. As with all human beings, the girl soon grew up- well, not ‘up’ exactly. The girl grew older and became busier. One day, as she tucked into her cozy bed with Kuromimi in tow, she swore that it seemed sad. Perhaps she had been away for too long or was too busy? Determined to find a companion for Kuromimi for whenever she was away, not wanting him to feel the same loneliness that she once had, the girl went to the arcade that weekend while completely ignoring the “Study day with Oshiro-san” reminder on her phone. Perched upon one of the arcade games, set up there as the ultimate prize, there she saw it- the perfect companion for Kuromimi: a big black kitty cat. Disregarding the arcade attendant’s clarification that it was actually a black panther plushie, to the girl it was the fluffiest, cutest black kitty plushie that she’d ever seen! And so she swore that she would win it.
But while her spirit was there, the girl’s luck wasn’t, for the arcade game was none other than… basketball. She had to reach a specific high score, which was all too difficult for a person of her height and build. No matter how much she tried, she fell short of the high score and come midday, the girl was completely exhausted. It was then that a certain person appeared and showed off that he was better than her at something. All it took was one round for him to reach the high score, what with his height and athleticism, and he subsequently won the black kitty plushie. That person didn’t look interested at the plushie itself though, but rather at the exhausted girl who stared at the prize in his hand. In her mind, she was actually debating as to whether she should offer to buy it from him or trade it for one of her rare books or games. While she was contemplating just that, a massive black ball of fluff was shoved into her arms and soon she realized that it was the black panther plushie. He scolded her for not showing up at the library but those words just flew right above the girl’s head. She was much too focused on the prize in her hands.
That was the beginning of the little community of plushies that lived upon her bed. Every time that she begged or whined or cried, the girl would get some ice cream or a plushie from that guy who was one of her classmates in some mundane college lecture. They had some things in common, particularly books and videogames, but that one plushie was the turning point of it all. The girl had many friends in her games, but only one friend who actually cared about what she had for breakfast, lunch or dinner; asked about her grades, or scolded her when she stayed up until 3AM to play games. Soon she had a small population of plushie friends around her, but the most special one was still the lone black rabbit which she hugged as she slept every night. And maybe the black kitty plushie too.
Presently, the girl muttered something in her sleep. Perhaps it was something from her dream or from her memories… whatever those words were, she said spoke them in a sweet, gentle manner. It was unlike her usual fragmented speech. Then the night slowly turned to day in that strange world which became her reality; somehow she felt secure with Hrairoo in her arms despite the coldness of the ground and the darkness of Elder Tale.
