Do you believe in ghosts? SQUEEEEE!!!
The final battle cry of a young boar pierced the ears of the swordsman as he twirled one of his many throwing knives between his fingers. It charged bravely, pushing its battered body to its limit as it attempted to at least strike the hooded foe before it. The swordsman, dressed in tattered clothes which would make a homeless person look rich, stood by with one blade in his left hand and the throwing knife in his right. With that combination of range and speed, he had eliminated a large collection of the boars in almost record time, clearing a small meadow of the creatures in under two minutes. Now, the only living creatures left in the entire field were the player and the young, sprinting boar. It whimpered and cried out in fright, but it continued to run. It ran with all of its might and with the souls of every one of its family behind it, pushing it on. It was a glorious sight, and one that Saber was sad to see end. However, all things needed to come to such an end at some point. Some earlier than others.
“May Zeus grant you safe passage!” From beneath the cloth which covered half of his face, the Assassin spoke loudly as he clutched the throwing knife. The boar released one last squeal, its voice echoing through the air and stretching into the open space faster than Saber could aim. Then, it ended. With a hard flick, the small knife was released into the air and imbedded itself within the skull of the approaching creature. Due to its lowered health, the boar was no match for the weapon. It squirmed and squeaked tiredly as it took its last steps, and then fell onto its side. It whimpered, afraid of the unknown as the player it had reached knelt down to it. Reaching out, Saber placed his hand on the side of the boar’s head.
“Be at peace…” He whispered, pulling his blade from the animal’s head. The little boar reached its front left foot up slowly and its will to fight on made Saber smirk. Before the boar burst into its collection of pixelated dust, it touched Saber’s chest with its leg. The determination of the young beast was one to be respected, and Saber felt joy that he had been able to meet such a foe. Though, the battle was over now and the boar was at the side of the Gods. It was time for the Assassin to move on.
Returning to his feet, Saber sheathed his sword and returned the throwing knife he held back into its pouch. During his fight, he had gradually recovered all of his equipment so he didn’t have any searching to do like he normally had too. After the long quest the other day where he and a handful of other Adventurers took on a Field Boss, Saber refused to spread his resources too far. He needed to keep things close by and easy to grab in case if a situation arose where he needed to leave. If he was forced to run around just to pick up random throwing knives he had decided to toss around willy-nilly while there was a Field Boss approaching, than Saber would not be a happy camper. Speed was a concern of his, so being able to leave an area just as quickly as he entered it was something he needed. Though, safety was also a huge concern of his. Sure he wanted to be able to move, but he also needed to be able to do so without risking his own life. Sadly, that was much easier said than done.
However, Saber had something on his side that the monsters could never influence no matter how hard they tried; his aggression. Going in feet first was something Saber did no matter the circumstances at hand and that would never change. The thrill of the fight fueled him like nothing else, and he loved it. Whether he had the equipment or if he had to rely on his fists, Saber would jump into anything if it meant getting out of the false reality around him or having a good time in general. He had fought with his fists before when he was on the verge of death, and he would do it a thousand times over if it meant victory. He felt like a true soldier to say the least, or a murderer. Which one other players would choose depended on how they saw him. If they saw him as a player who mercilessly slaughtered hundreds of monsters every day, than a murderer was a very reliable name to use. If they saw him as a person who fought to level up so he could protect others more easily, than a soldier would be better there. Either way, Saber didn’t care. He enjoyed fighting and it made his blood boil in the best way possible.
Suddenly, as Saber stood lost in thought, a loud bang echoed out to his left. Curious because of how close it was to where he stood, Saber glanced over and noticed something very out of place. Just beyond the initial row of trees, a large cluster of black silhouettes were making their way towards him. Their bright red eyes illuminated the shadows around the orb-shaped organs and it was easy to see that they were fixed on the small player standing in the clearing. The large beings paid no mind to the large trees in their path and simply pushed the things out of the way, ripping the tall spires of life right out of the ground. Saber raised his eyebrows in question as he saw the determination in the creatures to reach him. Yet, the man didn’t move. It didn’t take very long for the collection of shadows to finally reach the light.
The lead beast took a heavy step into the meadow, shoving the tree to its left out of the way of its stone body. Slowly as it moved forward, the line of sunlight rose up its body and exposed one inch of hard, living rock at a time until the entire creature’s body was visible. It stood in the light for a second, staring angrily toward the distant Assassin as it savored its freedom from the dark air of the forest. To its right and left, the other two shadow bodies emerged from the trees and stomped into the meadow as well. Seeing those types of creatures had become much more common in the area Saber was in, but it was strange to see so many of them actually moving outwards. Their spawn point was much further than where they currently were, and that made Saber question their motive for moving.
The City of Sarum was a hotbed for Stone Golem spawns, and the Golem creatures thrived in the areas around the walled city. However, they weren’t known to wander very far from the city so much of the forest zone was safe from their intrusion, most of the time. There were rare occasions when the Golems spread out and they lay waste to much of the area during such events. Strangely, Saber was not surprised that one of those events was occurring right before his eyes. He didn’t want to admit it, but he knew full well that the kettle was on the verge of bursting. It was only a matter of time before the Golems became bold again. Although Saber had beat them to near extinction before when he had decided to lockdown a small area and farm it for some materials. If they wanted to come after him, than he would gladly wipe their souls off the face of the planet again.
Reaching to his waist, Saber clutched the twin swords he had crafted with great care. Very slowly, he started to pull the weapons from their sheaths. As he did so, he turned to face the three Golems and narrowed his eyes on them. The three creatures were low level Golem Sentries. The leader was level ten and the Golems on his right and left were eight and seven respectively. They weren’t strong in relation to the other Golems Saber had faced, and they weren’t nearly strong enough to really hurt him. Yet that was no excuse to take his fight lightly. With a flick, Saber pulled the tips of his blades free and swung them down to his sides, brandishing the medium-sized weapons proudly for the light to reflect off them. The Golems stood patiently, eyeing the player as he readied himself for the fight. Though, even when he was ready, they remained still. He snarled beneath his scarf and squeezed the hilts of his blades, watching the trio of Stone Sentries as he searched for the reason for their hesitation. Was it fear? Were they having second thoughts after seeing him? No. Monsters didn’t fear, did they?
“Fine then…” With a gentle twist, Saber swirled his swords around his fingers, twirling them around as he turned his body to face the massive beasts.
“…I’ll come to you.” Once his swords had come back around, they slapped against his palms and caused his fingers to collapse around them. With a hard kick, the Assassin began to run forward. Seeing the movement, the Golems started to move as well. Their massive bodies stomped away from the forest at their backs and began to move towards the approaching enemy. Saber grinned at the sight.
“So… you were just waiting…” He sneered beneath his breath as he lowered his body to the ground, increasing his speed while doing so. The Golems weren't geniuses in battle and were very reactive, relying mainly on their high defense to protect them, so it wasn’t a surprise to see them move after Saber had. Yet, that defense only helped the towering beasts against the inexperienced players who hadn’t fought them enough. Saber was not so foolish. The man had spent several hours on the front lines of the city of Sarum, throwing himself into the fray without any hesitation in an attempt to reveal the city’s secrets by breaking the wall down by force. In the end, he only found himself in the middle of a war zone with nearly a hundred broken Golem bodies around him. It was a sad sight to see so many bodies, and for him it was also a waste of time, but it was something he had enjoyed. The fighting had got him some experience towards his level and he had learned much about how to battle the Golems so he didn’t complain too much about it.
Now, he would use all of that experience to his advantage. With his blades held tight, the Assassin’s blood began to boil as combat fell into his life once more, slamming into his face at full throttle. The Stone Golem at the front of the oncoming formation squeezed its stone hands into fists and picked up its pace, extending its stride. Saber flicked his weapons to his sides, brandishing the twin swords for his opponents to see. Though, it was not only a sign of strength but a tactic Saber used. As the blade hung beside him, the sunlight reflected off the metallic edges and turned into beams of light that cut through the air. With the sun in front of him, Saber began to twist and adjust the swords, causing the light to strike the lead Golem right in the eyes. It winced and groaned loudly, blinking hard to try and removed the blinded feeling.
It was too late for that.
Taking the opening without fear, Saber lowered his head and ran right through the Golem’s fists as the beast threw them towards the ground. Due to the sudden blindness, the Golem’s well-prepared punches became nothing but falling stones which were easily avoidable by the nimble soldier. Weaving right, Saber twirled around the right fist and sliced his swords across the stone hand. Then, almost as if he was dancing to the music of the Golem’s body, Saber stepped forward and shifted to his left as the second fist collapsed on the floor. Dirt and dust sprayed out into the air. Saber could feel the light mist of debris rush over him like a wave and even with his mouth covered, the man held his breath out of reaction to keep from swallowing or inhaling any of it. The Golems were slow, but their strength was nearly unmatched in the higher levels. Only the higher level Defender class players could take a punch head on without stumbling around. Yet, Saber wasn’t afraid of such a thing and wished that no one else was either. The best defense was a strong offense.
With the Golem’s two fists out of the way, Saber moved without fear between its massive legs and positioned himself right beneath the mobile collection of stones. His blades, sharpened to near perfection, began carving deep lines into the towering beast’s lower legs and ankles as Saber systematically chiseled away at them. Debris shot out like pellets, slapping against the player’s cloth armor and his face as it sprayed into the air and dust started to make breathing difficult. However that did not stop his onslaught. Twisting and twirling, Saber’s blades began breaking into the Golem’s legs, quickly offsetting the stability of the beast above him. In only a few quick seconds, the Golem was turned from a fearsome, towering foe into a carving board for the Assassin who was dancing around his feet. The Golem lifted itself up and started to move back, attempting to separate itself from the player. Its allies growled and tried to reach in to snag the mouse, but Saber simply hopped over or slipped out of reach. Then, spinning hard to his left with both of his swords nearly touching, Saber’s twin blades shattered earth and stone; the Golem’s right ankle broke apart, separating the leg from the foot.
The Golem attempted to remain standing and started to lean to its left as to balance on one foot, but it wasn’t so easy. The beast hobbled over and took one light hop, but with no support mechanism or anything that it could grab, the Golem began to tilt backwards. Saber sneered and jumped backwards, hopping out of the way as the Stone Sentry fell towards the ground. It flailed at the air and cried out, attempting to stop its fall even though it was futile. As Saber landed a safe distance from the other two Golems, the leader smashed against the ground. The earth beneath Saber’s feet shook, birds fled from the trees, and a small cloud of dirt swirled around the monster’s body. Saber grinned at the sight before looking at the remaining two Golems. They looked towards their leader, then towards each other, and then finally one looked towards Saber; the culprit behind their leader’s downfall.
With a flick Saber twirled the blade in his left hand into a reverse grip and then caught the hilt, snatching the weapon out of the air. Using the grab like a trigger, the player took a few steps forward and slipped into the range of the two Golems. They released their low roars and began attempting to grab the man, swinging their open palms at the player. Taking the chance, Saber jumped up and began to use the hands as platforms to elevate himself. He jumped into the Golems’ palms and then quickly jumped out of them, escaping the closing fingers before he could be trapped. It didn’t take much energy to get to his destination, and by then he was in a prime spot to attack; right in the weaker Golem’s face.
Saber planted his feet on the collar-area of the Golem’s torso, giving himself a firm base underneath him as he sliced his right blade through the monster’s neck, cutting a deep wound into it. Then, he shoved the sword into the Golem’s right eye, lodging the sharp sword in deep as to create a Damage-Over-Time wound. He then placed his right hand onto the Golem’s head and gripped onto a small indent, securing himself onto the beast as it roared out at him while stepping forward. Glancing over his shoulder, the player checked the location of the other Gol—
“Crap.” Immediately as he looked over his shoulder, Saber kicked off the Golem’s chest and flipped up and onto the creature’s stone head as a massive hand swatted at his previous position. A weak gale of wind threatened to push the player off balance as it struck the man in the back. Saber grumbled at the feeling and dropped to a knee, stabbing the sword in his hand through the Golem’s skull. It bellowed out loudly as its health continued to deteriorate, making Saber’s job easier.
The Golem Sentry shook his head and leaned down in attempts to fling the nuisance from its body, but it only made things worse. With a firm hold on his sword, Saber latched himself onto the Golem and eyed its health bar, watching the digital colors steadily decrease. However, as time went on and the health dropped lower; the Golem became more violent with its movements. Its shaking became much fiercer and it began to reach up to swat at the adventurer. Things were getting dangerous. Saber snarled loudly and tried to keep up with all of the action, but the once slow moving Stone Beast was now in a sort of berserk mode. Its head shakes were vicious, almost throwing Saber off. The hands swatting at the player came quickly, and Saber wasn’t exactly able to stay in one spot anymore. Then, when the Golem started to mix the two; it became too hot even for Saber. He needed to get out.
As the Golem stood up and flung its head back, Saber held firm for a second, waiting for the coming reaction. Then, when the flinging motion ended and the Golem started to lean forward while bring up one of its hands in an attempt to grab the player, Saber pulled his sword free and began to slide forward on his side, going right underneath the massive hand. His sword dragged across the top of the Golem’s skull, leaving a long, light cut from where Saber had stuck himself at to the Golem’s forehead. When the player popped off the Golem’s head and started falling towards the ground, he snagged the hilt of his other sword, which was still in the Golem’s eye. Using it as a sort of pole, Saber swung himself down and planted his feet on the beast’s chest once again. Yet, he didn’t wait longer than he needed to. Once he was safe from falling too fast, he yanked the blade from the stone eye socket and continued his drop, digging the tips of both swords into the hard body in front of him as he fell to slow his speed. By the time Saber reached the floor, the Golem’s health was at its limit. Stepping forward, the player flicked his swords out wide. With his arms fully extended, he sliced down and in, cutting both of the Golem’s ankles. When that motion was finished and his arms crossed in front of him, Saber twisted his wrists and separated his arms once more, cutting an additional line into both limbs. That caused the bar on Saber’s display to empty, and it was also the cue for him to move.
Dust and stone rain began to fall all around him as the Golem’s body integrity became nullified. Not wanting to be crushed or hurt by any of the larger bits, the player rolled forward and hopped a few paces to get clear. Once safe, he sheathed his blades and opened his menu. As the dead Golem collapsed, Saber navigated to his inventory, switched to the weapon display, and equipped his bow and arrows. For the first time since he crafted his arsenal; Saber was fully armed to the teeth with nearly all of his combat gear. It felt strange, being so heavily armed, but in some situations he needed it. Now, he didn’t, but he didn’t want to get close to another Golem for a while. So, he pulled his bow off his back, drew an arrow, and turned around.
“Whoa!” Once again, the Golem surprised Saber with its proximity. The man had expected the stone beast to be watching its brother fall but instead it was charging right at him! Its eyes were bright red, its fists clutched into hammers, and its body ready to be thrown at the player if necessary. The sight was almost identical to a rapidly approaching train. There was nothing to do but get out of the way, and that was exactly what Saber did.
As the Golem closed in, Saber dove to his right and rolled over his shoulder to avoid being plastered all over the ground. The ground shook violently beneath his knee as he rose to a crouch and it made aiming difficult. His base shook, and his bow trembled even as he squeezed the wooden frame. Making critical-hit worthy shots would be hard to do while the Golem was moving, so Saber would have to play smart.
With Saber having moved, the Golem slowed its sprinting and stomped to a stop, its massive legs pounding small indents into the floor as it did so. When it turned to find the player, it was suddenly struck in the head by an arrow. The Assassin grunted at the sight of a waste shot and quickly started to draw another arrow. The Golem, angered by the attempt on its life, turned and quickly started another charge. This time, its stride opened and its fists swung more rapidly. Saber cursed under his breath and took off into a sprint, running away from the Golem. The meadow he was in wasn’t huge but it was big, big enough for the player to have space to move so he made full use of every bit of it. With his bow held to his left and an arrow nocked, Saber moved quickly in the same direction the Golem was moving. Due to it having larger legs, and now much more speed, it was closing; fast. Yet, Saber kept his eyes forward as he moved. He used his ears to hear behind him and his feet to feel the vibrations beneath him. When the vibrations were too much and the noise to thumping too loud, Saber planted his right foot and swung his momentum to his left, changing his direction instantaneously. The Golem, however, had too much mass to stop itself so quickly and was forced to keep running several more meters just to slow down. Saber took his chance.
Whipping himself around and standing tall, Saber pulled back on the drawstring until it was taut. His eyes focused, his mind cleared, and his breath was blown out. At that same moment, the arrow he held was released. Not a second later, Saber pulled another arrow, nocked it, aimed, fired. Pull. Nock. Aim. Fire. Pull. Nock. Aim. Fire. The actions were repetitious, they were swift, and they were deadly. Saber’s body moved like a body of flowing water as he chained one shot into another, drilling the Stone Golem’s body with shot after shot, arrow after arrow. Critical hits stacked on top of each other and even the normal strikes were doing enough damage to slowly whittle the large health bar down. Saber’s equipment was weak, it was falling apart, and it was ugly to look at. However, he made short work of the Stone Golem’s health. Yet, he didn’t have long; the Golem was beginning another charge.
Stomping forward again, the Golem began to pick up speed. Saber pulled another arrow.
Pull. Nock. Aim. Fire. Torso. Pull. Nock. Aim. Fire. Neck. Critical.
Dirt kicked up around the Golem’s feet. The wind grew quiet. Saber pulled another arrow.
Pull. Nock. Aim. Fire. Shoulder. Pull. Nock. Aim. Fire. Neck. Critical.
The sun vanished behind the clouds. Birds stopped chirping. Saber pulled another arrow.
Pull. Nock. Aim. Fire. Neck. Critical. Pull. Nock. Aim. Fire. Neck. Critical.
The Golem released a loud bellow. Saber pulled another arrow.
Pull. Nock. Aim. Fire.
Neck.
Critical.
A heavy foot collapsed on the floor, two meters from where Saber stood. Then, the player shut his eyes and turned away. Dust, stone, rocks, earth, dirt, air; all a mix of the things which threw themselves against the unprotected player as he attempted to shield himself from the crumbling body of the Golem Sentry. His health dropped a few ticks, scratches laced his arms as he protected his head, and his already torn clothing deteriorated even further. It wasn’t the first time Saber had been assault by a dead body of a Golem, but at least this time he knew he had fought well. This time, Saber stood up in the middle of the pieces all around him. This time, he brushed himself off confidently. This time; Saber was the victorious one.
With a short glance around him, Saber was pleased with the sight. The Golem which had attempted to flatten him was now nothing but a disturbed collection of rocks on the ground, the other he had killed moments before was a handful of boulders neatly placed against one another, and the leader was lying flat on his back like a turtle. It was interesting to watch it claw at the ground in an attempt to push itself up but the beast’s bulky arms and huge torso made it nearly impossible to do so. Saber found himself chuckling at the sight and forced himself to start to walk over. He would have left the creature, but experience was experience and Saber would take every bit of it that he could. Yet, as Saber neared the creature, it began to roar and flail at him. It was pitiful to see such a strong beast be pushed into such desperation that it attempted to push its enemy out of the way.
Saber paid the flailing arm no mind though. Instead, he moved to the Golem’s head and just off to the left. Slowly and steadily, he pulled an arrow from his quiver, nocked it, and fired it into the Golem’s neck. After four shots into the critical point, the Golem’s flailing arm dropped to the floor. Unlike its brothers, the lead Golem did not grumble in a very outlandish or violent manner. Its eyes simply dimmed, the dirt which held its body parts together slipped through the cracks, and the rocks that made up the Golem’s body dropped to the floor. It was almost as if someone had pulled the plug on the monster’s life-support systems as the Golem’s body was still technically in one piece. Any one passing by could easily make out that the stones were indeed a Golem. It was almost as if it had become a monument of sorts… Cool.
“Well then…” Saber glanced around the area one more time before looking to his right towards where the Golem’s had come; Sarum. He wanted to stay and enjoy the silence of his victory, but he had a few questions. Sarum was a decent hike from where he was currently located so the fact that the Golems had come this far was extremely unsettling. In addition to that; they weren’t exactly push overs. If that was true, than what was going on over there? Though, he also wanted to know what was happening at the camp. If the Golems had reached where he was, than what happened to the other players? Something wasn’t right.
With that in mind, Saber began making his way towards the Sarum Expeditionary Camp. He followed the path the Golems had made for him and scanned the vicinity of the trail. He checked for players and for People of the Land that could potentially give him some information about the situation. However, he also looked for signs of other animals that would be living in the area; bunnies, birds, weasels, foxes, wolves, anything. If something was up, then they would know much sooner than anyone else would; the animals would be acting differently. They would be more sporadic, more violent or scared, or both. Most importantly; they would avoid contact with anything and everything that moved. The fact that they were gone and he couldn’t see any made him wary much more so than the actual appearance of the Golem’s themselves. Without any animals in the area, the forest was silent. Saber could hear every step he made and every breath he took, giving the zone an eerie feel. The bright green and well illuminated forest felt dead, vacant of all life, and hostile. The once loud sounds of birds singing were exchanged for the sound of Saber’s beating heart. The twitching and flinching of the bushes were replaced with Saber’s own feet, his own shaking, and his own quivering teeth. It was warm, but it was cold; it was lonely.
That was when a bush shook right to Saber’s left. Instinct took over and the player immediately grabbed the hilt of his right sword. He squeezed it tight and eyed the fern for a second before the occupant hopped out into the opening; a rabbit. It stood there, only a foot away from where Saber stood, and wiggled its nose at the air curiously. Its whiskeys shook and the black orb of an eye was affixed to Saber’s body. Seeing that, the player released his sword and raised his hand slowly. The rabbit quivered for a moment, its head twitched to the left, and then twitched to the right as if it heard something. Saber followed the animal’s gaze and found himself looking through the forest towards the city of Sarum. The man couldn’t see it, but that was the direction he would take if he wanted to go to it. Glancing down at the rabbit, Saber could see it was focusing on that direction. Its ears were raised up and its nose wiggling at it stared. Taking a risk, Saber knelt down beside the rabbit and reached out to it. He placed a hand on the animal’s back.
“What is it…?” Saber whispered. The rabbit straightened at the touch, but it didn’t move. Instead, it froze up. Its eyes remained pointed forward towards the city’s direction and its ears turned forward.
“What do you hear…?” Saber knew he couldn’t get an answer from the rabbit, but its actions weren’t helping. It was almost as if something had frightened it to the point of becoming a statue. The rabbit didn’t acknowledge Saber’s hand, his proximity, or even his voice. Something was there, at the city; something so scary the entire forest feared it. That was enough for Saber.
“Go. Hide.” Saber muttered, patting the rabbit very gently on the head before standing up. Almost as if it acknowledged the order, the animal turned completely around and darted off in the opposite direction as Sarum. Saber grit his teeth and picked up his pace, briskly walking down the path the Golem’s had taken until he was forced to branch off it in order to go the correct way to the Camp. From the look of the path, the Golems had indeed come from Sarum. Yet their sharp turn must have been because of Saber’s combat with the Weasels. They must have heard him. To have such sharp senses must have been a blessing.
After another minute of walking, Saber was finally able to escape the dead forest. Although, he wished he hadn’t. The moment he popped out, his eyes were filled with the sight of lower leveled Adventurers and People of the Land alike fleeing the camp as quickly as possible. The People grabbed everything they could carry while the lower level Adventurers simply grabbed their equipment and left. Saber was forced to remain out of the way of the road as a few wagons blazed by, their drivers snapping the reigns to make their horses move as quickly as possible. That was when a much smaller Person of the Land, a young boy, began to make his way passed the still Adventurer. Saber took his chance.
Reaching out like a tree branch that the boy had not seen, Saber snagged the child by the back of his shirt and lifted the boy into the air. It was comical how he continued to run for a few seconds before realizing he wasn’t on the ground anymore. By then, he was staring at Saber with wide bug eyes and a frightened scowl on his face. He swatted at the hand which held him, but Saber simply shook the boy a little to get him to stop.
"Lemme go!” The boy shouted. Saber complied, dropping the boy right on his backside.
“Why are you running?” Saber asked, playing stupid even though he had a bit of a clue as to the reasoning. The boy grumbled and patted his back off as he stood up.
“A bunch of Golem things are coming. My momma said run as far as I could so I ran. I think you should too. There’re a lot of them.” The boy seemed to be eyeing Saber’s tattered clothing, but the player was quite confident in his weapons. The man patted the little boy on the head and began walking towards the camp, crossing the dirt path as he eyed the city of Sarum in the distance.
“Mister! Where are you going?!” The boy shouted. Saber raised his hand and waved at him as he walked away. “To deal with the Golems!” Saber responded, taking a quick step to move himself out of the way of a wagon as he reached the other side of the street, and the side of the camp.
Saber stuffed his hands into his pockets, adjusting his pants slightly so they aligned with his waist a little better, and walked around the edge of the town. While he walked he could see plenty of the People of the Land arguing with each other about property, couples fighting over whether they should stay or leave, and a few Adventurers who tried to keep order. Saber wasn’t one to intercede with such things, his business was with the battlefield so he kept out of the camp itself. Instead he followed the dirt road around and passed the entrance to the part of the road which led to the open field of Sarum. Beyond it, Saber could see the horde of Golems coming, and they were coming quick. Some were jogging, others walked, but they were all angry and they all were determined. With just a glance, Saber could tell that was the case very easily. It would be tough to fight so many alone but it seemed like very few others were going to.
That was when he noticed that there were two people actually standing near the edge of the field; more than he expected. One of them he could tell was a Lander by how they dressed, the other was an Adventurer; a female Adventurer at that. Saber grumbled at the thought he had and approached the pair without making eye contact with the other player initially. However, he was almost forced to when the Person of the Land walked up to him. The NPC’s name was Amiel, and the other player’s was Caerbannog. The name was a strange one; it was long, had a weird pronunciation to it, and it was one Saber had already come across. It seemed that Sarum was full of surprises.
“Sir, will you help us?” The NPC, Amiel, pleaded as she stepped towards Saber. She extended a piece of paper, but Saber didn’t need to think twice to grab it. He took the paper gently from the woman’s hands and glanced at what was written; the objectives. Initially Saber had been hesitant of the large horde because of the size of them, but now that he knew the exact numbers he knew what he was going up against. It was easier to come up with a strategy when one knew what they would be fighting.
“We have no time to talk strategy.” Saber spoke up to the female player, Caerbannog, and accepted the quest. At that moment, he was automatically added to the party. She was still the same level and was still a Samurai. That was good.
“I’ll watch your back. Focus on getting their attention and stopping the advance. Once we have them halted, we’ll push them back. Amiel, continue with the evacuation and get some other Adventurers to set up a defensive line. We’ll handle the frontline.” Saber nodded towards the NPC woman and then looked towards Caerbannog. He smirked beneath the cloth over his face as he patted her gently on the head before looking towards the Golems. Oh he was going to have some fun today…
“Let’s do this.” Removing his hand from the female player’s head, Saber began to walk out towards the Golems. At the same time, he placed his hands on the hilts of his blades, squeezed, and pulled them both free. The metals inside of the blades reflected the light, giving them both colorful hues around their edges. Being a warmonger had its advantages sometimes…

She thought that the adventurers finally pushed the horde back but she was mistaken. Even from that distance she could see that as soon as a line of golems was eradicated, they were soon replaced. But with the dust settling between each spawn of mobs, it was apparent that the anomaly was slowing down. Perhaps it was a matter of time before that episode would end, and that all they had to do was defend the camp until that time has passed. Nothing was for certain though, because there was no one in the whole expedition camp who could explain exactly what was going on.
Caerbannog gripped her saya tightly with her left hand. She had no watch with which to tell time, and yet she knew that she’d been standing on the same spot for a while. It was the time for action yet she was hesitant. She still feared death even with multiple lives. Hers was not the kind of fear which was related to the end of one's life, rather it was a fear associated with her role. If she rushed in and died in the frontlines, anything that she held back would have its Hate redirected to other adventurers and not many of them would be able to deal with that amount of punishment. So the girl waited patiently even for just one soul who would wander to their direction and take up the quest.
Not a moment too late, a familiar figure walked over to the lander beside the samurai. Just like before, his clothes were tattered and old, hiding his appearance and masking his strength. The assassin Saber, who laid out a sound strategy before during her first Sarum expedition party and had been designated as the main tank for his ability to draw mobs and fight on par with them from up front, once again wandered in just when his assistance was most needed. Though Caerbannog’s face betrayed that she was surprised at his arrival with her blue eyes wide and fixated upon the assassin, she held back from speaking until she heard his voice to confirm that he was indeed Saber and that he would take on the quest against the anomaly.
The black-haired adventurer confirmed the assassin’s identity when he spoke up and was then added to the party. Just like before, the level difference was apparent but Caerbannog had never been bothered by it. If anything, Saber’s calm demeanor, simple appearance and high level inspired her to work hard as his party member. As expected, the assassin was aware of the urgency of the task at hand and would rather not waste time by planning a specific strategy. Instead, both adventurers would merely take on their class’ roles and head out to battle immediately. To the lander, Saber suggested that they continue the evacuation and have the other adventurers set up a defensive line.
Her sword at the ready and her mind focused on the objective, the samurai almost flinched when she felt a hand on her head. Almost, just almost. She caught herself and merely looked up at the assassin. Caerbannog’s wide-eyed expression was replaced by a more neutral one, her eyes narrowed down to slits with just a hint of annoyance on them. He probably meant nothing bad by it, much like the other adventurers who’d done that to her before. It was one of those things that she should get used to. The samurai accepted the pat on the head like a tank, without as much as a word, sigh or shudder, until the assassin removed his hand. The battle up ahead required focus and she could not afford to be distracted.
As soon as Saber gave the word, the black-haired adventurer dashed off to the frontlines to intercept newly spawned golems. She paid no mind to the other fighters which she passed by her seeing as they could hold their own. Her objective was to take on the latest wave so that it would not burden her fellow adventurers who were already fighting. She had one eye on the map interface, on Saber’s marker to be precise, to make sure that he was still behind her. He was probably faster than her given his class, but the party formation suggested that she move up front and some delay might cause him to swerve or fall behind. Soon enough, Caerbannog spotted two unengaged golem sentries which were just about ready to attack nearby adventurers who were still busy with their own fights. She gripped her saya tightly knowing that the battle would start then and there, and they could not stop until their objectives were met.
“ Dewa, ikimasu! “ the samurai yelled; it was her usual opening for when she played a tank role in another MMORPG.
In an English-speaking server, it might have sounded weird and indeed some adventurers turned to look at her. It was not a battlecry though but a notification for the party that she was going to start the fight: ‘ And so, let’s go! ‘ was a close translation. Two Level 5 Golem Sentries up ahead were the samurai’s targets; simple enough to start the fight, and so she dashed off to the first golem’s right side. The creature dwarfed her, but Caerbannog did not care. She did not see mobs in the same light as adventurers; the latter scared her when they were too far above her height, but the former fazed her not.
When the samurai drew her sword, the effect of Iaido came into play and it afforded her extra damage from the draw itself. With one hand on her nagamaki’s hilt, she slashed diagonally across the golem’s right knee. Before the creature could reach out to her, it lost its balance and began to fall over to one side. Caerbannog put her left hand on the nagamaki’s hilt for the sword was a two-handed weapon and could best be utilized with a guiding hand and a strong grip. She then flipped the blade to make its edge face a direction opposite from the draw, and then the samurai slashed diagonally and upwards at the falling golem’s torso. That last attack effectively destroyed the creature which, though not sliced to pieces, lost the rest of its hit points.
Caerbannog then ran through the thin veil of disappearing data crystals and thrust her nagamaki into a ridge in the other golem’s torso. The creature swiped at her with its right hand; using her height - or lack thereof- to her advantage, the samurai ducked out of the way as she held on tightly to her weapon. As anticipated, that movement caused the golem’s torso to move while its legs remained solidly on the ground. With the nagamaki embedded into the ridge, it caused more damage to the golem though its attacker merely stood there with her hands on the weapon. She noted the speed of the golem’s attacks and timed her own movement accordingly; it went back to its original posture before another attack was readied.
As the golem sentry tried to swipe at her with its left hand, Caerbannog kicked off the ground and thrust her nagamaki completely into the ridge. It caused the blade to go further into the golem’s torso and the action also made the creature lose its balance. While that golem fell backwards and suffered from a final sideward slash from the samurai which cut up a part of the mob’s torso, another golem spawned on the spot where the first Level 5 was killed. Unlike the previous enemy though, it was a Level 6 Golem Sentry. Nearby, a Level 7 Golem Sentry which had just been killed by a different party was replaced by a Level 8 opponent. There were more incoming Level 5s, and at that rate, the samurai figured that they would be overrun by Level 10 Golem Sentries before the anomaly ended if she kept killing the lower level mobs. She was not even sure if any of the other adventurers were as high a level as her or Saber, or if there were even higher leveled adventurers in the frontlines.
Regardless, Caerbannog still had her nagamaki at the ready. Two Level 6 golem sentries would not be a problem for her and all she needed to do was to grab their attention and not kill off too many of the things at the same time. The shadow of the Level 6 Golem Sentry behind her nearly fell upon the samurai, but she stepped to her right side and out of that shadow. Using her momentum from that quick turn, Caerbannog slashed at the right side of the newly spawned golem to draw its Hate. Meanwhile, as the data crystals of the second Level 5 vanished, a Level 6 Golem Sentry took its place. Not having enough time to throw a Samurai’s Challenge at it, the samurai used [Denkosekka] to dash off and she struck the creature’s leg as she ran past it. There were three more unengaged golems up ahead, fortunately all Level 5s. Using her buff to its fullest, the samurai ran off with two Level 6 golems in tow.
A quick slash to the nearest Level 5’s leg drew its attention for no one else had engaged it. The other Level 5 golem sentry close to the samurai’s initial target also turned to her but she knew that its Hate could easily be pulled away unless she actually damaged the creature. Therefore Caerbannog ran away from the other adventurers. A third Level 5 golem sentry was headed her way but she had a handful behind her already; she could not lose her momentum. At the moment that the golem pulled back its arm to let loose a punch at the incoming samurai, she dashed off using Denkosekka to its fullest and finished with a slide to the creature’s right side, her nagamaki held in that position parallel to the ground so that it slashed the golem’s leg.
With the attention of all those mobs focused on her, Caerbannog could only trust Saber to finish them off effectively while their backs were turned to him. The samurai held her left hand out to steadily herself from the slide as her right hand held the nagamaki to her side. Due to the slide’s momentum, she had to roll forward once and only after then was she able to stand up and turn to face the golems which she pulled away to that part of the battlefield.

Do you believe in ghosts? Almost immediately after his blades came loose and he had a firm hold on them, he felt a bit of a breeze whip up at his legs as his female party-mate whizzed by him, dashing towards the horde without another thought it seemed. The assassin raised an eyebrow, intrigued by the sight before him but he kept his own pace. He had seen her fight before, but seeing someone else take the lead in his presence for once was a new thing. Taking the lead was something he had grown used to as a level fifty plus, so seeing someone else make a silent change to that made him feel a little more confident in his partner. At least he wouldn’t have to worry about telling her to do stuff like one adventurer he had been dragged down by when he was in the level forty range; that Swashbuckler was an idiot.
With that in mind though, the part where he wouldn’t have to worry too much, Saber’s eyes drifted for a moment from the trail of his partner. He was no field monitor and he was not in control of the situation but that gave him even more reason to look around. The Golems themselves weren’t immense in number but they were spawning at an alarming rate so it was hard to push them back. It was much faster than usual and most of the other players were having trouble in places, causing a bit of a stagger in the advancement. Yet, once the Golems reached a certain distance and a larger number of players moved forward, a front line of sorts had been established. That was good. With a foothold in the area, no matter how inconspicuous or thin, the Adventurers had something to work off. Now, they just had to fight back, hard. The thought of a long, drawn out duel in the field made Saber’s body tingle. He grinned wide underneath the scarf over his face and narrowed his eyes a little. Oh the joys of combat… The thrill! If nothing else; this was what he lived for!
“Oh boy…” Flicking his wrists, Saber twirled his twin blades around and snapped his fingers around their hilts, locking them into a reverse grip as he looked ahead of himself; his partner was beginning to make her move now. So, Saber follow suit; it was about time to get the show on the road!
Using his speed and agility of his class, Saber zipped by some of his fellow adventurers and followed the path his ally had traced through a few pockets of combat. He would have gladly assisted the others if he was on his own, but he had a duty not just to the other players but to protect and guard the back of his tank. Lady Caerbannog could hold her own against a handful of the Golems, but he was unsure of how long so he would have to remain focused and act fast. Critical strikes would be the only ones he could rely on now so there would be no dancing like he had done earlier with the other three Golems. Deep, focused cuts would increase damage, and with two blades Saber would be able to increase the amount of hits. More critical hits meant faster health decay, and the faster that occurred, the faster they could move on to the next group. Speed was the name of the game when dealing with protection, and that was Saber’s defense against any and every enemy. Just as his father had taught him; punch first, land a knock out right then and there, and end the fight before it starts.
As Saber began to close in on his ally, finally catching back up to her with the help of his speed and lighter weight, he slowed his pace while watching her begin to engage two Golem Sentrys ahead of them. They were both level five so they would be easy work for either of the two players. This time however, Saber elected to remain as the guard rather than charge forward and take them both down. Caerbannog was already too focused on her attack, as her hand fell on the weapon on her hip’s hilt and said something in… Japanese…? Maybe? Was she Japanese…? From a quick look at Caerbannog’s weapon sheath, Saber would have thought the weapon was a katana because of the female player’s class, Samurai, yet the weapon itself seemed different; the handle was far too long to be a katana. Either way it was probably sharp, really sharp, compared to Saber’s Greek Xiphos. Maybe that choice of a weapon was because she was Japanese and knew more about such weap---Holy crap.
In one hard slice, the Samurai cut a clean line through the initial Golem’s right leg and caused it to loose balance. Then, just before the Golem touched the ground as it fell, another slicing sound rippled through his ears as the woman cut into the rocky monster’s chest. In a bright light, the Golem’s body began to disperse and created a gateway Caerbannog could use to reach the next Golem; which she abused to the point that assisting seemed almost useless. Saber chuckled at the sight of the mini-battle and was verge of attacking the second to assist, but his view was suddenly partially obscured by a… fist?! Oh a fist! Golem!
Immediately snapping to his right in reaction to the surprise appearance of an eclipse, Saber raised his two fists, and subsequently the two blades he held, to act as shields to protect him from the unavoidable impact. The massive stone rock came down as such and slammed into his two swords, swiftly followed by the massive clang sound of stone striking metal. Sparks flew into the air in all directions as the Golem pressed down, trying to push the Adventurer down into the dirt; three of which embedded themselves in Saber’s cheeks with a hot sizzle to them. He winced at the burning feeling but held firm. The initial impact was light and he was easily able to fend it off, but the pressure of the heavy hand pushing down on him was a little much; he needed an escape route, or at least some space. So, he would make some.
Using the Golem’s strength against it, Saber dropped to his knee and caused the Golem’s hand to chase him. Then, as the Golem moved, or fell, forward, he shoved off the ground and slammed into the fist once more; this time of his own accord. Using all of his strength, the Assassin threw the fist which was once pushing down on him up into the air and created several feet of emptiness between himself and the boulder-hand. In that moment, his knees buckled and the tension in them exponentially increased until no more could be pumped into them. Like springs, Saber’s legs extended and the player dove to the right, rolling over his shoulders twice as he escaped the shadows of the fist that was starting to come back down. A second after he escaped the range of the Golem’s attack; the heavy hand bashed into the ground and created a small shower of dirt and dust that rained down on Saber’s back and shoulders. The Golem grumbled with satisfaction, but it was Saber who was smirking victoriously.
Shooting out of the cloud and aiming straight for the Golem’s head, Saber readied his swords for a single killing blow. The Golem, believing it had actually crushed the player, was caught off guard by the appearance of the Assassin. Its eyes shot open wide, the pair of floating red orbs brightening as to reflect the emotion the creature felt. On the other hand, Saber’s eyes slitted and he focused on one single spot; the neck. In only a few seconds, the player launched himself from the ground, crossed the distance, and landed on the Golem’s upper torso. Even before he landed, Saber’s arms were in motion; the two well-prepared swords slicing through the air as the Golem’s fate was sealed. First the right blade, the Blade of the South, cut a deep gash into the Golem’s lower neck. Second the left sword, the Blade of the North, carved a line into the Golem’s upper neck. Both marks left a small space between them, but they were both deep enough to be almost fatal. Then, to seal the deal, both of Saber’s hands which had crossed in front of him sliced back. The two red eyes dimmed.
Placing his foot firmly on the center of the Golem’s face, Saber kicked up and flipped over the creature’s head as it began to roll forward. Just as the body part separated from the torso and began its descent to the ground, the Golem burst into a mix of dust and digital light pixels. Saber had killed the creature so fast that he had not actually been able to read its level, however his quest automatically updated for him; a level six Golem Sentry it seemed. How foolish of it. Yet, Saber was thankful for its appearance. For one, it added to the count and assisted himself and Caerbannog to their objective. Secondly it gave him something to do while his partner finished up her own encounter. Rather than standing by and twiddling his thumbs, Saber had been a little useful and he was warmed up now.
Squeezing his blades tight, quickly switching to a forward hold, Saber began to march towards his ally’s position as another Golem spawned in the place of the first she killed. This time however that Golem was a level six, not a level five. Interesting; so killing the lower level Golems spawned the next best thing? If that was the case, than they had a long way to go. There were plenty of higher level Golems, but Saber wasn’t exactly sure how high they went. He had never fought any Sentries above the level of ten so far. If there was a Sentry of a higher level, than things would get real fun… Wait a minute…
Saber paused in his advance and glanced over his shoulder towards the Golem he had just killed himself. He waited, quietly watching the empty space for a moment until, as suspected, another Golem began to take its place. The player hissed at the sight and looked towards his ally. She was handling herself well and had just finished off her second new friend. She was quick for a tank, Saber would give her that. Although in this situation they would need to be. So, Saber didn’t shout to her, not wanting to risk breaking her concentration. Instead, Saber waltzed over to the large, level six, Golem which had appeared. Once he reached it, the player gave it a nice, big, smack with the blunt side of his sword in order to get its attention. It did the trick as a verbal noise of question vibrated into the Adventurer’s torso. Tilting his head up, the player watched as the Golem looked over and then down at him.
“Ello there…” Saber wiggled his eyebrows, visibly enjoying toying with the creature before jumping backwards and safely out of its reach; avoiding a heavy swing of the creature’s open palm. That smack would have hurt much worse. The Golem, angered by the abuse, chased after the nimble player. As it closed, Saber took the time to look over his shoulder to his partner. She seemed to have gained the Hate of her first level six and was in the process of getting it from the second. With that in mind, Saber hopped backwards and dragged his own Golem across the field.
“Good boy.” Turning around, the Assassin lured his angry pet as he chased his female partner. The two Golems she had following her now blocked his line of sight to her, but he didn’t need to see her to know where she was; it was quite easy to know where two pissed stone walls were going. Though, it still bothered him a little to not be able to see her. Even though he knew she wasn’t in danger, Saber gnawed on his bottom lip a little in between breathes and caught himself glancing at her health bar in the corner of his view. It was time to clear a path.
Breaking into a full sprint with the assistance of his class, as well as his race, allowed Saber to reached the heels of the furthest back Golem in very little time. He actually almost ran into the thing, but instead transferred that momentum into something vertical. He shoved off the ground and lunged into the air, curving his body and leaning back as he held both hands above his head. His swords stuck out into the air like shimmering fangs and when Saber was close enough; the jaw snapped shut. With a powerful thrust, Saber dug the two swords into the middle of the Golem’s back, making both of them vanish from sight as he split the stone apart. The Golem released a loud, booming outcry of pain and started to stumble in its run. Saber used that to his advantage and ripped the right sword out. As if he was climbing a mountain, the player clawed his way up, using his swords to split a path to the Golem’s shoulders. Upon reaching the peak of his climb, the Golem began to fall forward. Its arms flailed a little bit from the pain and it tried to stay stable, but its back was giving out. Standing tall on the Golem’s right shoulder, Saber shot the creature a nasty glare. Then as if tired of the ruckus and whining groans, he sliced across the monster’s face, viciously lashing the monster with his sword before vaulting forward onto the ground once more. The Golem didn’t make another sound.
Hitting the ground in a roll, Saber immediately returned to sprinting forward and easily made up for the time he had lost. Yet this time he didn’t jump onto the back of the level six Golem, which was now being joined by a few other lower level animated stone horrors. Saber elected this time to bring it down to his level. With both swords ready, Saber aligned himself right between the Golem’s two legs and lunged up a few feet. Swinging his right sword diagonally, he slashed the left inner thigh. And then he used his left sword to cut a gash into the right. He finished his combination with horizontal slices across both legs. The Golem staggered in its run after Caerbannog, but it remained stable; good. As Saber landed, he took a few more steps and lunged back up, this time focusing on only the left leg. He slashed downwards, swinging one sword at a time as to create a deep X in the limp. Then, he created two horizontal lines in that X by cutting his blades back across the leg. Just as he started falling, Saber shot his arms forward and buried his blades into the Golem’s left knee joint, locking the leg from bending. When it attempted to step on that leg, the stone beast was unable to support its weight; the spring was gone. The mobile stone statue began to fall.
Separating himself from the creature, Saber pulled his blades free from the joint and landed down just behind the Golem’s left foot. He didn’t waste time and didn’t wait for the Golem to land. Instead, he began running right up the creature’s leg and onto its back. He began to use the tumbling beast like a rip, but also slid the sharp edges of his blades along its body as to effectively empty its health by. Taking one last step as the beast began to dematerialize; Saber launched himself forward and high up into the air. Instantly, a slight fear of heights struck the man as he remembered falling before. Last time he had jumped as high as he was he nearly died and swore he wouldn’t let that happen again. Still, the fear was there, and it made his stomach churn. What a petty feeling…
Thankfully, Caerbannog had ended her collection of Golems and the creatures were slowing down as she was also coming to a halt now. This allowed Saber to increase the effectiveness of his jump to a great extent because one of the level five beasts was in his landing zone. Much like the first level six golem he had killed, Saber positioned his swords in front of him and slowly began to raise them above his head as he fell towards the ground. Yet, he didn’t plan to dig in this time like he had done before. Rather, he stabbed only half of the swords into the Golem’s back. This allowed him to break his fall steadily at the expense of the monster he latched on to. Due to his weight, gravity, and momentum, the two blades split the stone and began to cut down through the boulder as Saber’s fall was steadily broken. This left two deep, long marks in the monster’s back and had consumed nearly all of the monster’s health. With just a little left, once Saber pulled his blades free and dropped to the ground all he did was swing his swords to the sides and cut two lines into the monster’s ankles.
Though, his jumping and hopping had taken time. Sure, they allowed Saber to catch up but this also allowed his own plus one to catch up; the first level seven Golem of the day. It was coming like a train now and as Saber looked over at it, he knew full well that stopping it was going to be a pain. So, he braced. Gritting his teeth as the Golem lowered its shoulder, Saber swirled his swords and then stepped forward hard to create a solid base beneath himself and to meet his foe head on. The two metal extensions crossed in front of the player, creating a metal shield as the massive beast collided with him, easily overtaking the Adventurer’s position. The Assassin’s health steadily declined from the impact and his boots skidded across the ground, digging up the planet as the player was pushed backwards. He grunted and tensed his arms, holding his swords firmly in place even as he felt like they would give out. The Golem’s charge did not last long after the impact and it swiftly ran out of steam and nearly ten percent of Saber’s health was already gone at that point. It was a bit depressing to see so much gone, but Saber would live. Such an experience was worth it anyways as Saber enjoyed the moment. It was actually quite entertaining to grab the bull by the horns.
Yet, he would need to discipline the bull, and that was exactly what he did. The moment the Golem stopped its forward progression, Saber pulled his swords back and hopped out of the way. The monster had leaned forward and put everything into its stride, causing its center of balance to merge with Saber’s. Without Saber’s support, the Golem fell forward and dropped face first onto the ground. The player took full advantage of the Golem’s exposed backside and jumped onto it, thrusting both blades down into the back of its skull. Once they were lodged in, he twisted and held them, eyeing the health meter as it rapidly declined. Then, he tore them free, leaving just enough left for Saber to get a few slashes in before the Golem began to disintegrate. Very slowly and steadily, Saber walked off the dead enemy’s shoulder and hopped onto the ground. His blood pulsed through his veins, his heart pumped, and his breathing was ragged. Yes, this was what Saber lived for…
Sheathing his swords, Saber quickly switched to his bow and nocked two arrows at once, stacking them on top of each other before pulling on the string. The moment he couldn’t pull any further, he released. The two arrows shot forward and lodged themselves into the next Golem’s neck, critically injuring the beast while also causing a decline in some head movement. Using speed rather than accuracy, Saber began nocking one arrow after another, shifting from one of the remaining two Golems to the next. He stepped forward slowly, calculating and adjusting for the declining space between himself and the remaining two creatures as he hit them in their skulls and upper bodies. After just a few direct hits, both of the Golems’ Hates’ shifted from Caerbannog’s to him, but it was futile now. His shots became more focused, more accurate, and more deadly as the arrows began to lodge themselves into the joints of the Golems, hindering movement. Then, the first fell, collapsing midstride as its health was nullified. A few shots later, the second follow suit.
Saber was ready to shoot once more but he quickly relaxed the bow string and slipped his arrow back into his quiver. Strapping the bow to his chest again, Saber pulled his swords back out from their sheathes and glanced over at Caerbannog.
“If I’m right, they’ll spawn again in a second. Either we wait, or we move. Your choice. Make it quick.” Saber nodded to his tank and looked a little to his right, back the way they had come. The first level six he had killed was already spawning as a level seven most likely. It wouldn’t be long until the others spawned if they operated in the same manner. Whether that was true or not, Saber did not know, but it seemed to be the case for this fight. How strange…

She had no time to look back though and so Caerbannog was only able to check what went on behind her once she finished the slide. At that point, the first two Level 6 golems were already taken care of and one of the Level 5s was missing too. A quick look at the party list and she noticed that Saber’s HP was down by 10%. He was damaged by that much? How? The golems blocked the samurai’s view so she was unable to check on the assassin until he drew the attention of the last two golem sentries. Saber’s arrows soon flew through the air and each hit drained the golems’ hit points until they dissipated to data crystals. The samurai watched the pretty sparkles drift away and it afforded her a moment’s rest.
All that running around reminded her once more about the reality of Elder Tale. In an MMORPG, equipment and level differences operated in much the same way: equipped with low level armors and weapons, it would take a while for her to kill lower level targets. However, in MMORPGs, all she had to do was click buttons and a skill would be executed. In Elder Tale though, the attacks were dependent on her position and movement. With each fight, the samurai became more skilled with her nagamaki; also, fighting a golem was not too difficult for its anatomy was much like her own. She picked at points that would disable her and applied that logic against her target.
Then there came the assassin’s voice and the options which he offered to her. Caerbannog looked at his HP bar and thought to ask if he was okay, but she decided against it since she might offend the higher leveled adventurer. Instead, the samurai sheathed her nagamaki to prepare for the rest of the fight. While Saber had his weapons at the ready, hers was in its saya. That was her preparation.
“ Fight until Level 10, “ was the samurai’s answer, and then she dashed towards the Level 8 golem sentry which appeared nearby.
Her right hand on her weapon’s hilt, Caerbannog kept in mind the pattern of the anomaly. She looked at the quest list and the progress of the objectives: five Level 5s, three Level 6s and a Level 7 were killed between the two adventurers. Saber took care of the two Level 6s which followed her and added another one to the list, so it seemed. She did not see any Level 7s, so Saber took that one too sometime after she ran off with the Level 5s. That meant they’d have to face two Level 7s and a Level 8 at the next spawn in addition to three Level 6s. At that point, running off towards the other adventurers would be a bad idea. Not only would they have little room to move in, the samurai and the assassin would have to worry about crossfire as well.
The samurai decided to keep that small group of golems away from the rest of the camp’s fighters. What would happen if they killed the golem sentries at Level 10 though? Will the spawn rate reset? Caerbannog thought that perhaps with each wave of Level 10 golem sentries wiped out, the spawn rate would eventually slow down. That would explain the slight delay between the spawns which she noticed a while back. A sound theory, but unproven so far; she would have to keep fighting to test it out. Hopefully Saber understood what she meant though her statement was far too short to be called a decent reply.
Those thoughts ran through her mind only for a few milliseconds. It was not enough to distract her from the battle; the possible failure of her theory did not make the samurai hesitate. She would keep fighting until the quest was completed, that was it. Caerbannog stopped right in front of the newly spawned Level 8 golem sentry. Her weapon was only a Level 5 nagamaki and so even with her higher level, the samurai would not risk incurring Hate without actually denting the target. Instead of slashing at the golem’s legs, the samurai aimed low as she drew her sword. She aimed not for the legs, but for the golem’s foot- its right foot, to be precise.
The move was like a toe crusher but instead of crushing what could be called the golem’s toes, Caerbannog cut them clean off. Iaido really was a useful passive skill though not practical in most situations. She usually had to use it as an opener and not much else. The golem growled in pain or surprise, or made some sound that all golems make when they were attacked. It then threw a right-hand punch at Caerbannog but she blocked it diagonally with her dominant hand on the nagamaki’s hilt and the other hand against the blunt side of the blade. The samurai turned her head down a little, just low enough so that the sparks from the clash of stone against metal would land on her hair rather than on her eyes.
As she anticipated, the golem sentry’s attack pushed the samurai back but she kept her arms up and her legs steady. Pushed back but not taken down, she waited out those few seconds of the golem’s attack and when her backwards movement stopped, Caerbannog took three steps back and kicked off the ground. She jumped onto the golem’s outstretched arm and ran up towards its shoulder. The creature moved and prepared to stand up straight so it lowered its arm. Since her platform was moving to a vertical position, the samurai leapt off from it and held her nagamaki overhead with two hands on the hilt. She aimed at the golem’s head and slashed down between its eyes. Due to the attack, the target lost its composure and stepped back. Therefore, the samurai was able to land on the ground without having to defend against an attack.
With that golem’s attention turned to her, Caerbannog expected it to follow her for a while. One of the Level 7s spawned nearby and her priority was to tank that one too. The dark-armored samurai dashed into its line of sight while the Level 8 got its head back into the game and turned towards her. No one else was within the Level 7’s reach, so the golem immediately took to attacking the only adventurer in its sight. Caerbannog steeled herself and slashed the nagamaki from her left side towards the incoming golem punch. She used [Shunsen] to cut through the air and form a cutting wave before the creature’s attack reached her. The momentary pressure field pushed the golem’s hand back and prevented it from following up with another attack, after which the samurai stepped closer to the golem. She then took thrust the tip of her blade into the golem’s torso just to deal some more damage on it, but as quickly as she moved in, Caerbannog stepped back out of the golem’s reach.
As for the Level 8 golem, it soon stumbled on its feet for the right one was missing its toes. The creature ended up in a kneeling position with both hands on the ground which left it open to an attack. Its eyes were still on the samurai who was engaged with the Level 7. Careful not to break the chain of her samurai skills, Caerbannog sheathed her nagamaki as she turned towards another newly-spawned golem, this time a Level 6. To incur its Hate, the samurai jumped up and landed on the creature’s shoulder; when it turned to look at her, she kicked hard at its face. Soon another Level 7 and the other two Level 6s would spawn; the samurai would use the rest of her ace moves on them.
