The familiar camp of Sarum awaited Oxford, ready to help out with some combat after spending weeks in the woods. He approached the counter that contained the necessary monster info any combat party would need.(Heh, this could be cinch, combined with some of the notes I got from my earlier scouting expedition.)Now the hardest part of the journey emerged for Oxford: finding fellow Adventurers for a party.Talking to strangers was always a frustratingly hard chore for Oxford. Not knowing anything about them, their likes/dislikes, topics of interest, etc., made it hard for Oxford converse with people.It was a fear that gripped him his entire life, and yet he hoped that he could eliminate that fear within the boundaries of the game world.Walking up to people to ask if they were interested repulsed Oxford. Instead, another idea came to mind:(Instead of going to them, why don't I have them come to me?)Taking one of the spare signs lying around the stalls, Oxford wrote his message on its wooden planks and stuck it in the ground next to him.Adventurers Wanted for Combat Party (Mainly Golem Sentry Elimination) No flowery words or super descriptive details, other than the bit about the Golem Sentries. Simple and to the point was how he preferred his signs.
As Oxford waited for potential recruits, he leaned against his sign. He brought out his notebook, reviewing the notes he made on the monsters he happened to encounter.(Looks like most of the monsters only seem to spawn when you get close to the city. That's fine, I was wanting to go by the city again, anyway.)
People continued to walk by, Oxford getting caught up in his notes.Words: 289OOC Notes: -- Tags: Hanelli |

Han was itching to help out with the Sarum Expedition; mainly because she wanted to assist in something this grand a scale; instead of just sitting around and doing absolutely nothing. She knew that if she hung around the main camp long enough, people would recognize that this ‘weird foreigner’ was actually planning on helping this entire thing move forward. So far she’d gone on several mapping and hunting quests, and hoped that her efforts would not be in vain. However, she knew that it would not be enough, so she decided to look around and see if there would be anyone who would need some assistance this fine day. Well, asides the fact that I’m still a measly level one… screw the level gap, who cares, I just want to help out so much! She thought as she looked around her favorite ‘haunting place’, the signboard that had the different quests available in Sarum up for the taking.
She immediately noticed that there was a sign that was looking for people to come along for the ride (mainly in eliminating Golem Sentries) and she stopped for a few moments and let a chuckle escape her lips; for this individual who had posted the ad was doing the exact same thing she’d been doing for the past several days in order to actually get people to tag along with her. She knew that the red-headed weirdo was not around for the moment; and she could use the experience working with different people. So, she took the ever-so-casual approach and then went straight to the person who’d posted up said sign, and then addressed him. “Need help with getting rid of some of those Sentries? Let’s go then,” she said in her accented English, quickly flicking through her menu and then sending him a party request. She hoped that he would see it right away.
And avoid asking the potentially awkward questions okay? She thought as she waited for him to react; or even see that he was not alone. [339]

The party invite popped in front of Oxford's face, nearly causing him to drop his notebook in the process. He closed his notebook and looked up at the person who sent him the intrusive party invite.
An Elf stood before him, but unlike most adventurers who played as elves, this one a little...short. Her short brown hair hid her ears from view, but Oxford discerned her race through the party invite.
And yes, this Adventurer was female. It seems like Oxford had been doing nothing but party with girls for the most of his duration within the game world.
(What's the deal, did I get stuck inside a harem anime?!)
He reached up with his right hand and navigated through the menu, accepting the party invite. He made sure to take note of the player's name, Hanelli, and took out his map from his scouting expedition.
(Hm, Level 1. I might have to use the Teacher System, but since we're aiming for the lowly sentries, I don't think it'll be too big of a problem...as long as nothing nasty decides to crash the party...)
Not being too keen on introductions, Oxford decided to keep it simple before turning around to head out.
"Nice to meet you, Hanelli. I've already got a spot picked out that should be profitable for both of us."
He unrolled the parchment, his eyes immediately going for the empty ring that indicated the unknown city. He began to walk towards its direction, still lost in thought.
(Hopefully, I can get a peek inside of there this time...)
He had taken a couple steps before he realized that he was walking alone. He turned around, halting his walk for the moment.
"Whoops, sorry. There I go again, not paying attention."
He tapped the empty sector on his map when holding it up for Hanelli to see.
"I'd like to hunt our sentries around this area if that's alright with you."
Oxford adjusted his glasses, sunlight glinting off of them as he did so.Words: 336OOC Notes: I watch harem anime for the plot.Tags: Hanelli |

She could understand the basic stuff that he was saying, so she found it best to simply nod and agree with him, as she watched him unfurl a map and then began walking; leaving her behind! Wait what am I supposed to do now, just stand here? She thought with a bemused look on her face as she watched him turn around, and then she was expecting him to slap a palm to his forehead or being stupid, and then he pointed at the map. she then took this as the cue to follow him; which she did so, and she had closed the distance between them in a few strides, and saw that his map was still partially blank. She already had a few map pieces of her own due to helping complete the mapping part of this, but that other piece was already reserved for Kumori, so…
She nodded to his explanation, before finally choosing her dagger and then holding it, spinning it around much like an infamous series would normally do. “Yeah, I’m fine with it. How many Golems would you be okay with?” she asked, looking at the map as well, trying to scrutinize if there was something special about the area that he was pointing to. “I’d need some back-up cover though… electricity doesn’t work too well against the Golems, as I’d discovered some time ago,” she said with an embarrassed look on her face. Oh lordy. No way in hell do I want to relive that nightmare with Kumori again. She thought, shaking her head at that very embarrassing thought that had crossed her mind. “Don’t worry. I can hold my own against the Golem Sentries,” she added, unwinding the coiled rope that was around her right arm, and preparing to ‘lasso’ some unwanted Sentries that crossed their path. [305]

Oxford nodded his head in approval as the smaller Elf adventurer unwound a coil of rope, rolling up the map as they began to head towards the city."I'm hoping we can take out 10 or so Sentries, maybe even 50 if it's an incredibly good day...but not all at once. That'd be awful."He was interested in hearing about her troubles with Golems from before, but when he saw her face, Oxford thought it better if he didn't.It looked like she licked a lemon-flavored snowcone, only to find out that it wasn't syrup that made the crushed ice yellow.~~~~~~~~~~ It took some time to reach the city, but there it was, out in the distance with the sun high in the sky as it threw its light over everything in the valley.Grassy plains surrounded the city before meeting with the inclined slopes of the mountains. Trees were few, but they were tall and leafy, swaying in the wind as a breeze blew.Oxford paused for a minute, giving the Elf enough time to catch up as he closed his eyes and enjoyed the peaceful serenity before the two approached the city."You ready to go, Cae--Er, Hanelli?"(Ah, cripes. I've been adventuring too long with her...)The short elf reminded him of another vertically challenged individual who often dragged him into dangerous situations. Oxford clapped his hand to his forehead, partially from his slip of the tongue, and mostly from remembering some unpleasant adventures with the other girl.(I sure hope it's different with this one...)
"Sorry about that. You reminded me of another adventurer I'd run around with."The city's gates were wide open, as if inviting the pair to come in and stay awhile.(If we're lucky, we'll be able to get out after awhile as well.)Even before they entered the gate, three Golem Sentries spawned, forming themselves from rocks around the surrounding area. They instantly aggroed on Oxford as he readied his buckler shield and drew his longsword.He was startled by the sudden appearance of these three hulking masses, but he calmed down when he saw that they were merely Level 3 opponents."Heh, how fitting. Three level threes."Words: 368OOC Notes: Three Lvl 3 Golem Sentries have entered the fray. Tags: Hanelli |

“If we can take them all out, then why not? However we’d be crazy to do that. Golem Rush, anyone?” she said with a chuckle, as she tried her best to keep up with him, finishing the uncoiling process so that she was ready to start lassoing some Golems once they came in sight of the two adventurers who were out to get some business done. She noticed that he’d almost called her by another name; but that name was familiar, and she chuckled to herself. “So you’ve been going around with Caerbannog too then,” she said, noting that little slip-up; but letting it slide. It’s better to be mistaken for someone else, than to be known at all… she thought as she began winding said rope and forming it into a lasso, holding the end that was attached to her kunai at that point.
They were now at the point where the gates of the unexplored ‘interior’ were hanging open, as if beckoning anyone crazy to go inside and never come out again... and she made a slight coughing noise; before stepping slightly forward in front of him. “I don’t know which class you are, but you look more…intellectual, so I suggest staying behind me… ‘cause I have a plan,” she said, nodding her head towards the three Golem Sentries that were now trundling towards them. “Watch this,” she said with a grin, before quickly breaking out into her fastest dash, swinging the rope ‘lasso’ around and above her head. “Hey, uglies! Over here!” she shouted, drawing the ire of the three Sentries hat were now moving at a snail’s pace; would they even move any faster than this, when she suddenly ducked as the fists began flailing; she knew she had to move swiftly or else!
Now that she’d dodged the first strike of the nearest Golem, she quickly threw the rope down low and then rolled off to one side as she quickly picked up the other, and began tugging on it until it was taut. Fall down, fall down, fall down! Her mind shouted, steeling her legs as best as she could and the Golem was slowly but surely tripping over itself; before swaying sideways and hitting the next Golem beside it. “Go on, trip over!” she shouted, applying all of her weight on the rope so that at least two of the three Golem Sentries would be incapacitated; the third one was headed his way; and she hoped that she could get to him fast enough in order to avoid a nasty disaster! The Guardian was about to reply to her question about a certain Wolf-Hair Samurai, but then she unfurled her lasso and then took on two of the Golem Sentries, leaving him in a state of confusion.
He stood by and watched the chaos, the elven assassing dodging and jumping and rolling with ease as she ensared the Sentries, watching them trip and tumble around. The jumble of rocks that made up the Golems began to break apart as they hit the ground.
"Well, I guess that takes care of those two."He flashed her a thumbs-up sign of approval, amazed at how fast she managed to take out the lumbering apparitions. However, he heard the tremors beneath his feet as the third Sentry approached him. Oxford stared blankly at the thing, activating the passive skill [Shield Mastery] as hefted his tower shield in front of him, barely feeling its weight. He drew his longsword with his other, banging it against his shield as a taunt to the monster."Come at me, bro! That is, if you've got the stones to do it!"Rising to the taunt, the Sentry raised its fist and brought it crashing down on the Guardian, but Oxford had already anticipated something like this. He raised his shield above his hand and activated [Counter Break], the force from the recoil was enough to shatter the Golem's arm, bits of rock flying everywhere. He lowered his shield as he ran at the rock beast.Losing its balance, the rock monster stumbled backwards, fighting against gravity so that it would remain upright. The fight was lost for the creature when Oxford's sword pierced its leg. The Guardian had managed to lodge it between a chink in the boulders that made it up and continued the horizontal strike, taking off its leg in the process.With no hope of overcoming its losing battle against gravity's pull of -9.8m/s2, the sentry fell, and quite slowly for such a heavy creature. Oxford managed to take of the rock that acted as its head before it hit the ground with a dull thud, blasting into bits as it disintigrated into data bits.He turned around to Hanelli, adjusting his glasses to help prevent the dust from getting into his eyes that the fallen Golem had managed to stir up."Everything's good over here. How's your end?"
A weird feeling coursed through his body, one he had many times before when he played Elder Tales. It was a feeling of exilihiration, the kind of feeling you get when you managing to pull off something amazing. It flowed through him, making him feel like he could take on the world and win.
(Damn, that was awesome! I bet I could take those other two no prob--)
He sneezed as the dust tickled his nose. The sense of 'awesome' that he felt within him left with the sudden burst of air that comes with every sneeze.Words: 490OOC Notes: -- Tags: Hanelli |

Now that the two Golems were down, she watched as he took on the third and then chuckled; because if that was not a taunt, then what else would it be? She chuckled as hard as she could manage while keeping the rope taut; and seeing that the Golems were now down for the count, she finally released the grip on the rope and wound said rope up through her hands; in order to be able to recoil it across her shoulder. “Well, that takes care of them. Let’s do this thing,” she said with a grin on her face, quickly slipping out her dagger and then approaching the first fallen Golem, and attacking it as fast as she could manage, but even with her normal weapon, it did take a while for the thing to actually explode into bits of data; because they were made of stone, and she was just using a normal, if albeit really sharp, weapon. Sighing as the first Goelm then exploded into nothing but bits of data that vanished; she then turned her attention to the second one.
This is going to take a while… she thought to herself as she proceeded to hack and slash away at the Golem’s body; leaving nothing but dents and scratches across the surface. Realizing that she was not applying enough force to her attacks, she then began throwing literally as much weight as she could with every slash, even resorting to hold her dagger in two hands, as she continued to hack away at the Golem’s health. After what felt like another eternity, it also exploded into nothingness; and the ‘death count’ went up by two; but she knew that there were going to be so much more if they decided to go in further. Seeing that he’d knocked over his own Golem as well, she flashed a thumbs-up in his direction, before stopping to catch her own breath. “Knocking them over makes them easier to take out, you know,” she said with a grin on her face; happy that she’d shared this revelation with another explorer. Now if she could just relay this to every single adventurer back in the Sarum base camp, then they wouldn’t have so much trouble with the darned things…
“Shall we go look for more Golems now?” she asked a few moments later, dusting herself down and wiping off as much dirt and grit as she could. [406]

Oxford had thought about jumping in to help with the other Golem, but she had already finished with the first before the Guardian could do anything.
He returned the thumbs-up, glad that someone else appreciated the use of the commonplace approval gesture.
After the second one disappeared in a puff of dust and data, Hanelli explained to Oxford some useful tidbits she learned about taking on the Golems. He pulled out his notebook, adding the nuggets of info to his portable repository of knowledge.
"Oh, also, I've found that managing to land hits in the chinks in the rocks take away a good deal more damage than simply striking them with a weapon. It's harder to land a hit, but since we'll be knocking them to the ground, I don't think it should be too big of a problem."
Oxford finished up his notes, snapping the leather-bound book shut before putting it back into his inventory. The smaller Elf adventurer was dusting herself off, asking if he was ready to encounter more animated boulder piles.
"Sure, ready whenever you are."
They walked around the city some more, Oxford occasionally throwing a rock to nowhere in particular, seeing if the noise it made would incite a sentry uprising.
This seemed to be a good way of finding them, since the boulder he hit with his last rock happened to be a Level 10 Golem Sentry. He brought along a friend, a smaller Golem Sentry at level 8.
The Japanese culture side of Oxford's mind sparked when he saw the two as they stood there.
"Hehe. The big one's Senpai, and the smaller one's Kouhai."
He chuckled as he pulled out his sword and shield, getting into a ready stance as the sentries slowly approached the two adventurers. He looked at Hanelli as he asked his question.
"So, which one do you want, Nelli? Overthrow your Senpai, or dominate your Kouhai? Or better yet, take 'em both?"Words: 325OOC Notes: I think I've been watching too much anime lately... Tags: Hanelli |

She then realized that what she’d been trying to do in the past with the Golems (when she’d gone on her first actual battle with her fellow Assassin) was right, she then let a smile flicker on her face, before giving her companion another thumbs-up gesture. “I noticed that as well, but I realized that at my level now, it would take a while to bring them down in that fashion. However, color me ambitious, but I’m thinking of introducing an innovative idea; why not have elemental-based arrows, since all we have are normal wooden ones? We could possibly have some that are just sharp-tipped, and some that have elemental attributes attached to them. I’m thinking of picking up a bow and arrow as well, since my other class is Hunter, so that I have a better shot at aiming at those ‘chinks in the armor’ as you say,” she said with another grin before following him off deeper into the area. She noticed that he was tossing stray pebbles ahead of him, but not hitting anything—and then saw reason why he was doing that.
One of the ‘rocks’ he’d hit was an actual Golem and this time it had a ‘buddy’ along for the ride; Han then resisted the urge to chuckle, but ended up failing as he described the Golems as ‘senpai’ and ‘kouhai’... and at that moment something popped into her mind, something so hilarious she just had to laugh along with his joke. She already had a reply ready, and she hoped he got the reference too, “Since you gave me those wonderful options… why not Zoidberg?” she cracked, meaning that they should go and get the both of them anyway, since taking them out one at a time would spell so much trouble if the other was left unarmed and distracted. “Let’s go take ‘em down!” she said, darting forward and swinging the rope in her hands, ready to trip the bigger one over into the smaller one if need be-because right that second a fist came flailing in her direction, and she did a backwards bend so far down it almost felt like she was dodging bullets from another franchise!
She then quickly let the rope fly and then it shot through the opening that the Golem’s legs provided, and she quickly rolled off to the side and then grabbed the other end of the rope. “I’ll try to knock it into its partner, go hack and slash away once he starts tripping over… like now!” she said, quickly yanking the rope taut and then throwing as much weight as she could onto it, pulling it so hard in the opposite direction, said Golem almost took a flailing swipe at her companion. She then steeled her legs and continued to throw all her weight into the ground, leaving actual drag marks and after what felt like almost an eternity, said Golem finally began to trip forward—fists still flailing—but would it hit the other Golem companion with it? Yes it would.
Senpai fell into Kouhai's arms as they both slammed into the ground, a touching moment if this were actually some sort of bizarre romance comedy. Luckily, this is a battle thread, not a thread about unrequited love between two golems.
After the narrator was finished breaking the fourth wall, he adjusted the story to go back a little earlier so Oxford could recount his memories.
~~~~~~~~ Oxford gave a chuckle as he nodded sagely at Hanelli's response to his earlier inquiry, both for its strategic advantage as well as for the clever comeback.
He would have used his hands to imitate the crab claws of a well-known Internet reference, but when your hands are full with a sword and shield, it becomes quite a bit harder to pull off.
After that, the Elven assassin took the lead, readying her rope as she ran to ensnare them. Oxford was paralyzed with fear for a split second when Senpai wanted her face to meet his fist. She dodged it with surprising grace and flexibility, performing a backwards bend Keanu Reeves would have been proud of.
Which brings us back to the now.
Hanelli had just brought down to two golems, both of them flailing as they hit the ground. Oxford wasted no time when the Assassin yelled for him to begin hacking in slashing.
(Oh, I'll do better than that.)
He brought a [Aura Saber] strike to crash down on the Senpai, dealing out another to Kouhai once the cooldown time had passed. Large gashes opened up on the boulders that constructed their torsos as a result of the wide strike.
He walked over to Senpai, shoving his sword into joint between its head and its chest. Using his longsword as a lever, he pulled back on it until its head popped clean off. It rolled around on the ground, like a super heavy tumbleweed in the desert.
Now he turned his gaze upon Kouhai, still trying to get off the ground to avenge its fallen senpai. The Guardian pulled his sword out of the earth, ready to plunge it into the golem should it resist. He whittled down its health until there was hardly any left. A stiff breeze could have finished it off if the gust hit hard enough.
The golem was up, ready to lay waste to Oxford, launching its stony fist towards him. It would have been problematic, if the golem didn't literally fall to pieces. Whether it was out of heartbreak, or because it was a wuss, will remain a mystery to Oxford. Unless Hanelli had something to do with that.Words: 437OOC Notes: Need a new emoticon? Why not Zoidberg? She knew that even bending over backwards so many times would eventually kill her back; but hey, they were in a game where anything was possible, and so began chuckling as all of her force proved successful, as the Golems had now bumped and crashed into each other, and one of them even got beheaded when she’d signaled to him to start laying into them with everything that he could throw their way and she then decided to go along for the ride. Seeing that tossing projectiles at them would not work too well, she decided to go up close and personal, quickly unwinding the rope and dropping her dagger out from her Inventory. She then put on a burst of speed as much as she could manage, and was now close enough to deliver a series of slashing attacks; and then right there, just like that, the Golem Sentry that they were dealing with suddenly exploded into bits of data.
Seeing that they had now taken out quite a number, she then gave a bow in his direction, and then flashed another thumbs-up in his direction. “And then there were none,” she said, chuckling at the beheaded Golem that he’d taken out and the other one she’d helped finish off as well. “Now that we’ve got the problem somewhat thinned out, what say you, we go back to Sarum and report our progress? I know that what we did was just temporary, but still, better some than none at all…” she trailed off with this glint in her eye; she already had plans for their next encounter, if that would be possible. At the last second, she then sent her companion a Friend request, hoping that he would accept it. “So that we can keep in touch whenever something interesting happens, what do you think?” she asked, nodding in his direction. She really needed to expand on her Friends list more... I hope he accepts it, because hell having more Friends around is better than having none… went through her mind as she began coiling the rope back up and then slinging it over her right shoulder once again. Sheathing his sword and swinging his shield around to his back, Oxford stretched a bit, keeping himself a little limber so his arms wouldn't cramp up later in the day. He forgot to that once, and ended up walking around like the joints in his armor wouldn't bend.
Seeing that the area was clear of Sentries, he heard Hanelli suggest that it would be good to go ahead and report back to the Sarum camp. He finished up his little stretching routine before replying.
"Yeah, sounds good. All this rampant slaughtering of golems is making me hungry."
He turned to head out of the city's entrance, only to be met with a Friend Request flashing in his face. He turned and saw that Hanelli's hand was in the air, meaning that she purposely sent the Friend Invite to him. He remembered a time when he got an invite on another game, but then the person removed him because they meant to send it to someone else.
Swallowing that bitter memory, Oxford happily accepted the invite, glad to have another name to adorn his list. If having friends was a game in itself, then his score at the moment would be 3.
"I do like interesting things."
He gave her a smile as he said this, feeling better about himself. He felt so much different from the Level 1 Guardian who could hardly bring himself to talk to anyone. The feeling of being lost and the hopeless he felt back then were now a thing of the past, sealed in the annals of times come and gone.
Oxford pulled out the gold he earned from the Golems out of his satchel, jangling the heavy coins around in his hand like a suave Prohibition-era crime lord as he made an her an offer that she could refuse if she wanted to.
"You wanna grab a bite or something? I always like to treat a new friend."
He stuffed the gold coins back into his pouch, fearing that they would fall out of his hands if he kept shaking them around like that.
The two began the walk back to camp, talking and laughing about various interesting things and of interesting things that could come their way.
