It was around midday in the world of Elder Tale and the streets of Londenium was packed with busy people. A lone girl, her hair completely black and her eyes a bright blue, made her way to St. Pancras Station. She was on a quest that day, but not one for scouting through the lands or for killing off various beasts. Her quest that day was related to her crafting subclass which was ‘Chef’. She’d heard of Unfounded Food, that thing which allowed even non-Chefs to create their own meals. However, the result was usually either bad or bland if those people used the system’s recipe.
While Caerbannog was perfectly capable of making food items which really did taste pretty awesome, she wanted to contribute to the communities of Elder Tale. If non-Chefs could make basic food items then it would be not farfetched for them to be able to create something as simple: sauce. And no, not just any sauce that landers could churn out. Caerbannog wanted to create things that other people would actually like. So, while she was sure that she could tolerate whatever she was going to cook, the samurai figured that another person’s opinion would be highly valuable for that research. Only one name crossed her mind, that person who was always eating something spicy or the like.
“ @0x1dea! “ she called the guardian via telepathy, “ St. Pancras Station, please. “
To make sure that Oxford would spot her in such a crowd, the yukata-wearing samurai stood by a small mountain of chili peppers. Caerbannog herself would curiously pick through those fruits and purchase the ones which seemed to emit enough fragrance and heat. She was sure that Oxford, what with his fondness for hot sauce, could do better than her at picking the things out.

Status: Sauce plz.
Oxford rolled around on the bed in his room after Caer had contacted him via telepathy. She always seemed to call when he was in the mood for a nap. He'd already done a hunting competition with her and a couple other adventurers, slogged through the swamps, had introverted encounters, and managed to get involved in some kind of King's Game or something or other at a restaurant (from which they were probably banned for life).
He got up out of the bed, putting on his treasured green shirt from his shenanigans over in the American server and his Comfy Jacket. It was quite warm, but honestly, Oxford didn't care. The heat wasn't stifling, but yet he rolled up his sleeves to expose more skin to the elements.
He began the long walk from the inn to St. Pancreas Station, an area that sounded like a hot spot for back-alley doctors and pharmacists. He took his glasses off when he stepped into the zone, rubbing dust of his glasses and the sleepiness out of his eyes.
After putting them back on his face, he began to search the area for the familiar vertically-challenged figure of the blue-eyed Samurai. And there she was, standing next to mountain of chili peppers taller than her. He noticed that she was wearing the traditional Japanese yukata, such a deep dark black that it almost shined blue, kind of like the wings of a tree swallow.
He yawned as he greeted her.
"Good morning, Blues."
He noticed that the sun was higher in the air than it should be for the morning. He looked at the clock on his HUD, saying that it was far from morning. Oxford wished that he had a quicksave and quickload button to go back and overwrite that mistake.
"Er, afternoon. So, what's up? Needing help with something else again?"
He began to pick through the pile of peppers, looking for one with enough spice to wake him up. He found the signature green jalapeno pepper, a great one to slice up and put on a bed of cheesy beef nachos, and popped it into his mouth, assessing it's spiciness as he chewed it.
"Huh, mild." Words: 366 OOC Notes: Here we go again... Tags: @dindeen |

Caerbannog heard a familiar voice that greeted her while she was staring at and poking the pile of chili peppers. She turned around and saw Oxford there, and he began to pick at the pile too. To the chef’s surprise, the guardian went ahead, picked one of the peppers and ate it right then and there. The girl stared at Oxford, wide-eyed; she’d never seen anyone do something like that. And even when she cooked spicy dishes, she never ate whole chili peppers, only chopped ones.
“ Whoooooooa~ “ she said, awed, and then the chef cut to the chase and told the guardian her purpose for calling him over, “ Sauce research. Can help? Pick bestest peppers please? “
She’d let the guardian pick whichever ingredients he thought would be best for the research and she would pay for them afterwards. While she did know how to make sauces in the real world, Caerbannog did not know how to make all of them, just the basic principle. She knew that they’d need onions, garlic, oil and vinegar, all of which she purchased already. Only the main ingredient remained and it was something that she’d leave up to the guardian.
“ What’s the difference? Red and green? “ Caerbannog asked the much taller adventurer, “ Aside from colors? “
There were many base ingredients available in Elder Tale and if she was to make any progress as a chef, the girl knew that she’d have to look into them. In addition to that, she had to know what people actually wanted or preferred for certain times of the day or for different occasions. Food tasted better when shared with other people after all.

Status: The Science of Spiciness
As he continued chewing the disappointing pepper, he heard Caer's statement of awe, not really knowing why she found the act so wonderous and awe-inspiring.
(This isn't even good enough to grace a bed of nachos.)
He swallowed the not-at-all-spicy failure, wishing he had a bottle of water or something to wash away the taste from his rioting tastebuds. It was like someone asking for warmth on a cold day, only to be rewarded with a bucket of water in their face.
The aspiring chef was now asking Oxford how to pick out the best peppers for her, as well as an explanation as to what the difference was between green and red peppers. He dug through the pile, picking out another green jalapeno, an orange habanero, a red cayenne, and a purple one, Oxford not remembering it's name. Let's just call it the "Hotter than Hell" pepper for now.
"The colors are used as an indicator to tell you what kind of pepper it is you're handling. The shape of the pepper also reveals its type as well."
Liking his peppers how he liked his women (hot and spicy), he took a bite out of the red pepper, the familiar tingling sensation of burning from the inside taking its hold over Ox's tongue. He waited a moment for the satisfying heat to die down before explaining the pepper types to Caer.
"Alright, I'm gonna show you four different kinds of peppers, starting from mild to sear-your-tastebuds-off hot."
He held up the green pepper.
"This one normally isn't particularly as hot as most pansies are led to believe. These are usually good in salsa or on nachos and sandwiches, but not generally used in hot sauce. Mainly used to give food a little bit of a zing."
He popped it into his mouth, crunching on it as he picked up the next one, the red one he'd already taken a bite out of.
"Now this one, it's capable of making a grown man cry if they aren't careful."
He took another bite out of it before continuing.
"This is probably the one you want for hot sauce. They use these kinds frequently in the tabasco and buffalo sauces. If you want something that'll give you a good kick in the mouth, this is the one you want."
He then held up an orange, bulbous pepper, tentatively taking a bite out of it. Yep, no mistake about it. That was a bonafide habanero. The beginnings of tears began to form in his eyes.
"Now this one, this would knock you to the ground and have you beg for mercy. You would only put this in a sauce if you were out to torture someone."
He placed the bitten pepper back on the table as he cautiously grabbed the purple pepper. He didn't even bother taking a bite out of it, just licking the thing was enough to send a man into a spiced frenzy.
"Now, this one. Promise me that if you do ever use this one, you'll only use it's powers for good."
He gave Caer a playful bop on the head with it to emphasize his seriousness about the Hotter than Hell pepper. Oxford threw it back into the pile for some other unfortunate soul to have the pleasure of dealing with their sphincter shrinking when they took a bite out of it. Subclass: Chef | Tools: Cooking Utensils | Researching: Sauce - :: - Skill: Iron Stomach (Passive) So Oxford really was the go-to guy for chili peppers, huh? The chef listened to his explanations intently about the color and heat of type of pepper. With every bite that the guardian took, Caerbannog let out an awed “ooooh”. After concise statements and after the chef was made to swear that the purple ones should only be used for good, Caerbannog purchased a handful of the reddest chili peppers that she could reach. Once the purchase was done, the girl led Oxford over to a small area at St. Pancras Station where chefs gathered to cook. Some of them had large stoves while others had stone ovens, but the poorest ones like the wolf-hair only used flint and a bunch of rocks as a makeshift stove.
Caerbannog made a ring of sturdy stones and put some dry wood in the middle. She then used her flint to start a fire which did not take too long; the girl was used to creating her own fire and she knew how to keep it burning too. She then put a small iron sauce pan on the fire and put a bit of cooking oil in it. While the oil was being heated up, Caerbannog gestured for Oxford to come over and to watch what she was doing. The chef had not explained it to him but her research was supposed to be something that even non-Chefs could create.
First, the chef showed the guardian how to sauté. She chopped up onion and garlic, and then put the chopped goods into the sauce pan. It made a distinctive crackling sound which was soon drowned out when she put chopped tomatoes (yeah, she bought those too) and sliced red chili peppers in. Moisture from the tomatoes created a paste which combined the other ingredients together. Caerbannog then put a bit of vinegar in the mixture with salt and sugar to taste. She let the sauce simmer for a while until the scent changed from a garlicy, slightly sweet scent due to the addition of tomatoes, to a strong spicy smell unlike that of white or black pepper.
“ Try it? “ the girl offered some of the hot sauce which she put on a spoon to Oxford, “ I showed cooking so you can make it on your own. “
As for the sauce, it might need some more salt or sugar... or lots and lots of chili peppers.

Oxford whipped out his notebook when the Wolf-Hair began to work her crafting subclass magic, taking note of the ingredients she used and the preparation of the food as she began to blend them into a simmering sauce.
He found it hard to concentrate sometimes, since the spiciness from the habanero began to kick in, the Guardian beginning to sweat due to the combination from the heat of the cooking fire and the heat of the underestimated chili pepper. A couple of "haahs" escaped from his mouth as he tried to get the heat under control.
Oxford watched the Wolf-Hair work, admiring her as she concentrated on the task before her, neatly cutting the vegetables into cubes and then dumping them into the sauce pot. A dallop of vinegar and pinches of salt and sugar immediately followed, Caer stirring the whole thing and allowed it to stew in the heat.
A couple minutes later, the sauce was done. Caer held out a spoonful of the sauce, which Oxford promptly ate as the Wolf-Hair held the spoon. He smacked his lips a couple of times, waiting for the spice to kick in from the peppers. He closed his eyes and smiled, nodding as he felt the heat wash over him.
"Mmm, I like it. Personally, I would prefer it to be a bit more spicy, but still pretty tasty."
If he had a bowlful of chips, he probably would've taken the sauce and dumped it all over them. Back home, he'd been known to be a scourge at Mexican restaurants for eating tons of the free chips and salsa that they would offer before bringing out your meal.
He clapped his hands together and gave a small bow to the Wolf-Hair Chef.

Subclass: Chef | Tools: Cooking Utensils | Researching: Sauce - :: - Skill: Iron Stomach (Passive) The chef waited enthusiastically for Oxford’s reaction to her newly-researched sauce. Her eyes were full of anticipation, though she was not too expectant of a positive reply. It was the first time that she made a sauce item in Elder Tale after all, and although she knew how to craft all of the existing recipes so far, research was a whole other thing altogether. Oxford soon closed his eyes and smiled. That was good, right?
The guardian then assessed the hot sauce. He said that he liked it but that he preferred if it was spicier. Caerbannog nodded at that and then she turned to her cooking area. The chef chopped up more red chilis, dropped them into the sauce pan which was still over the first, and then she mixed the sauce as it simmered. She then put out the fire and then she mixed the sauce a bit more. The girl looked around her and swiped a small jar from a fellow chef when he wasn’t looking. She then put some of the hot sauce in it and offered the item to Oxford as thanks for helping her out.
Caerbannog soon cleaned up her mess and put everything in proper order before she turned to leave. With a smile and a wave, she bid farewell to the guardian. In the back of her mind, she wished that he remembered everything that the chef did so that he could replicate it with his own two hands. The recipe that the girl tried to make was supposed to be usable by non-chefs too. Ah well, in any case, she had her [Hot Sauce] craft which was what she wanted to accomplished that day.
