Ryuu had approached Sarum again, but this time on his own. He was about to go to the heart of it. Why? He wanted to prove something. He wanted to prove that no matter what this world threw at him, he would best it and continue moving forward. What he didn’t realize was the brevity of his words. What he didn’t know was that he was still human, still killable, still weak. His power was beginning to get to his head, and yet he had managed to show everyone how arrogant he was. While this was a task that seemed difficult, Ryuu only saw it as easy and as something he could do in with no trouble at all. Ryuu looked back at the Sarum camp and noticed that most were asleep. Yes, Ryuu was crazy. No one had ever done this at night, no one had ever even thought of going into uncharted lands alone, no less facing the mobs on his own as well. Assassins were single-target specialists, but that did not stop him from proving he was strong.
No one would know about his feats or failures during this time, but he never had the intention of dying. No. That morning, he had taken on more than he could’ve handled, and that was partially his fault. His arrogance through his strength had gotten the better of him. His death had brought him to such a state that he would no longer be able to face the public, his friends, his family. No, he had to remind himself of what he came from, and what he came from was nothing. But that is story for another time. The story now, was of his adventure, alone into the expanse under the moonlit sky. He was Ryuunosuke Oshiro, or in this world, he was named Kumori. He was the shadow that would follow after their target, silent, deadly, and proficient.
In the morning, Ryuu slept in, taking all the time he could. He did not wish to wake until it was about time for the journey he had planned in advance. 8 hours of sleep, and waking up at around 10 in the evening, he was ready to start his journey towards the Sarum Campsite. He had slept in his Guild House, knowing that he would not be able to sleep well during the day at Sarum. His room was much more comfortable, and for the task he was about to undertake, he needed absolute focus and his body and mind in pique condition. He knew it was difficult, but he did not know it was impossible. He had locked his room in order to ensure that he would not be disturbed, making his room only accessible to himself. This meant that there would be no rude awakenings by Kyuu, his ‘little sister’, and Jojo, who was always on his case to get things done. While he usually didn’t mind the times where they would wake him up, today he did mind, and so he had locked them out.
The alarm of his in-game menu rang. Ryuu clicked the button to stop it and sat up in his bed, rubbing his eyes. The sleep was uneventful. There were no dreams, no nightmares. It was better, as he wouldn’t have to think about it. The room was dark, both from the blocking of all the cracks that led to the outside, and also because it was in the dead of night. The assassin removed the shades from his windows so that they reverted to their normal opacity and he looked outside to see that only the street lights were on and they’d be burning for only a while longer. He turned towards his closet and began removing all of his equipment from it. He attached them carefully and inspected them to make sure they were in top shape. After placing the daggers back on the display rack, Ryuu tied the sayas to his back. He took the daggers back into his hands and sheathed them with quietly and swiftly. Before he opened his door, Ryuu took the hood of his armor into his hand and placed it over his head, concealing his identity. His hair filled the empty space of the hood, and his eyes partially covered. It looked like he was truly on an assassination mission, but that was not the case.
The door opened, and using his silent walk as to not awaken or disturb anyone, he crept through the hallways of his Guild House. He did not make the same mistake as last time, making noise at the very end. He had avoided that step, and was able to leave without alerting his fellow guild members. They did not need to know about this. While he did do this to prove something, he also did it this way to increase the dangers of this mission. While moonlight was bright and lit the path, it’s light was not as strong as the sun. However, this made him dangerous, as the presence of light meant the presence of shadows. That was what mattered the most, that is what he thought would give him an edge.
He ran through the forests of Windsor. There were several creatures of the night that preyed there at this time, but he simply ran past them, avoiding any confrontation with them. He even avoided confrontation with the People of the Land and adventurers alike. He did not want anyone to know what he was up to. All they would see was that Sarum was more clear than the day before, and his name would be there at the end of this mission. He didn’t care for the fame. No, that wasn’t true. He didn’t know it, but he did all this to boost himself above everyone, to gain the respect of others, something he had a hard time gaining in the real world because of his stature compared to many of his Caucasian counterparts, and his heritage. He wanted the recognition that he was the best, but being the best did not mean showing everyone you were the best. No, being the best was knowing that you could do something without showing everyone that you could. Ryuu wanted recognition and Ryuu wanted to help everyone, but his attitude as of late had not been doing that. While in his perspective, this was a means to show the world how great he was, he was becoming a tyrant rather than a caring leader.
As the assassin ventured out, he did so quietly and slowly. He did not want to wake any of those who were near the campground borders. Most people did not travel during this time of night, for there were much more than just golems that appeared. The night brought about different creatures, different beasts, but Ryuu was not scared. He faced his fears, one step at a time. His goal was to take on 20 sentinels at the same time, and he knew the exact spot to go to do so. He brought no HP potions and no MP potions. He was as arrogant as he could get. With his level 10 armor and his level 5 weapons, he really had no reason to be so cocky. The only reason he was given that freedom was because of his levels. He was level 45, and that proved enough to him that he was capable of impossible feats. What he didn’t realize was that the feat he was talking about was impossible, even for his level. While he did gain a few new skills that would help him with the bout, he did not expect many things to happen and many things to go wrong during this journey.
“I’ll own the night,” he said, trying to pump himself up. He was mentally preparing himself for what was to happen in the next few hours before dawn. He brought some food and water, enough to last him for a day. He did not take into account what problems that may have arisen during the course of his trip. This journey would be a true testament of success and failure. If he succeeded, he would continue to bolster his ego, but if he failed, he would be downtrodden for days, rethinking of his past, and realizing that he was foolish. Could he complete the mission he had set up for himself? He had to destroy 20 sentinels simultaneously. While that task alone was a handful, although possible, Ryuu had to be taught to expect the unexpected. He should’ve brought his potions and should’ve accounted for what may have been the worst thing to happen after killing 20 sentinels.
After a few miles of walking and not getting attacked by anything other than the sentries, he decided to speed things up a little. As he moved at a constant pace, trying to locate the spot of which he knew there would be plenty of enemies. As he went to the heart of Sarum, he went there to kill the 20 golem sentinels. He arrived, and the area was packed with dozens of sentinels. He smirked at the sight, thinking this would be a cinch. His target was 20, but there were at least 50 sentinels. He was up for the challenge, and that challenge was made when he was told that he wasn’t that great. He needed to prove, once again, that he was better.
Ryuu didn’t bother with keeping hidden. He launched his throwing knife upwards, using [Congreating Arc] and used it in conjunction with [Shadow Bind], both were deadly when used together, and because the moon was shining brightly, their shadows were usable to bind them. The golems that were under his attack of knives were unable to move, and thus his first targets. There were a total of 5 caught by the shadow binds. He rushed towards the center, slashing at all of them, spinning around to do as much damage to them as possible. As one attempted to punch him, he jumped, forcing it to attack a comrade of its own. Ryuu landed on another golem and did the same, this time running up the arm and kicking off the face. He propelled himself towards another golem and slashed at it, taking off its arm. He then spun and killed the previous one he had kicked off of, however there were still 3 in front of him. Ryuu jumped up in an effort to kill the golem with a downward slash, but a golem, unhindered by the shadow bind had gotten the best of him and punched him away. Ryuu wiped the mouth that dripped from his mouth, but continued his onslaught, killing the golem that had punched him with several stabs and slashed that had no need to be explained. He had just killed three golems, and there were still 3 in the shadow bind. He danced around, dodging left and right, until he was about half way through. His health was only 25% gone, and his MP, which he attempted to conserve was at around 60% of its capacity. He had 10 more sentinels to kill, but this is where things began to go wrong.
As he threw the next set of knives to stop the golems from moving, he had done so successfully again, taking on the golems that were caught by the bind. Five golems again, it would be like clockwork. He’d take out several of them at the same time, many times forcing them to attack each other. He was almost at the end of the road as the last 5 began approaching. Unfortunately, before he could finish the five he was fighting earlier, the other five were right next to him, all surrounding the five immobilized sentinels. They punched straight through the cracks of the group, and their sole aim was to kill Kumori. Ryuu was too late to notice, as he took the brunt of the attack. All 5 attacks had connected, dealing significant damage to him, bringing him down to 25% Using the same combo from earlier, the knives bound the golems to their place, and Ryuu quickly removed himself from the center. Taking advantage of the immobilized golems, Ryuu was relieved. He was lmost about to die, but he had cleared it
Ryuu sat down and began resting, however seconds afterwards, he felt a vibration, not akin to the sentinels. No, he had undertaken this kind of boss before. It was the Golem Phalanx, backed by several hundered flying creatures. Ryuu smirked, at it, as if saying that this was not enough. “This’ll be a piece of cake,” he said aloud, quietly. He rushed forward, but before he could do anything to approach the golem, the creatures of the night picked him up. Ryuu flailed around, trying to cut the giant bird thing to pieces, but he was held in a way that he could do nothing but be grabbed. He tried to swing his legs up, attempting to kick the creature that was carrying him to the Phalanx. Ryuu could do nothing except for wait until the worst was over. He was stuck, and it was a problem. All he could do was face it head on. Ryuu waited for the approach, and as he was let go of, in front of the Phalanx, Ryuu started to fight again, trying to finish what he started. While his main objective was over with, he definitely wanted to solo the Field Boss on his own. “Good bye, my sweet,” he said as he jumped up, but before his attack could land, his body was lifted high into the air by the arms of the golem. Ryuu was wide—eyed, unsure of what to do. All he could do was watch in horror and the giant golem began pressing his hands together.
“Yabai!” he screamed, hoping it would help him escape. It didn’t. Ryuu struggled and wiggled, hoping he would slip through, but the hands were closing in, and he had no more time left. The hands clasped together as it began to squeeze the life out of Ryuu. “NOOOOOO!” he yelled out, trying to stop the golem, but to no availy, his life slowly, but surely, began reaching dangerous levels. As his body undertook the damage, he was weakening, unable to lift his arms, unable to do much other than watch his life get taken from him. Finally, his hit points hit 0%, 0 HP, and overall 0 lives. He was gone, exploding into a back of data crystals. He was back in London, but he didn’t know what to do. The Field Boss death prevented his items from being dropped, which meant he had kept all of it, however he kept the memory of death.
When he awoke again, he looked around. The sight was familiar, but he didn’t like how he got there. He didn’t get here of his own volition. He got here because he had just died. The feeling, he couldn’t describe it. He looked at his hands, his legs, his body. All was intact, but what was the price? He was in the Abbey, and he was alone, so very alone. It was dawn, now, and people were beginning to wake up. Ryuu could not be seen here, and so he rushed out, and towards his guild house. His body moved with gusto, but his mind was fragile now, if not broken. He did not know what happened. He completed his quest, and yet the Phalanx had come to kill him. He had never experienced death like this, and he realized how important it was to be cautious. He was sure people were already awake in there, but he ignored them and went directly into his room. He could not be bothered now. His emotions were running high and he did not know what to tell the others of what had happened. It was his pride that told him not to say anything, but it was also his pride that told him he was a failure. He could not face his guild members, not after he had failed them on so many levels. He couldn’t. How was he treating Kyuu through all this since the game started? How had he been treating the low-level players? He may have thought that he was helping them, but in the end, he was only showing off. Showing the world he was amazing, and yet he never needed recognition for what he did. He may have thought that respect comes with recognition, but it didn’t, and so all he did was simply look at his wall. He reset the permissions so that no one was allowed to enter or exit except for him. He needed this time to think. He needed to reflect on what had just happened. He was not as strong as he though, and even he was, he knew that the power was getting to his head. He had started practicing what he promised he wouldn’t. And so begins the tale of Kumori, the emo assassin.
