A number of classes allow for the character to handle other creatures to fight by their side. It can be classified in the following ways:
Tamed Animal: Creatures that are trained by behaving friendly to the animal or monster in question. Subclasses such as the Animal Trainer or Farmer are usually the primary users of this tactic, but in some cases, it is not entirely necessary to have a formal taming skill to receive aid. Monsters with a Friendly nature and negotiations through Tongue of Nature can improve relationships between a character and a monster. If a tamed animal should be killed, it will not respawn. Mounts are classified under this category, but they are automatically desummoned when their HP would otherwise reach 0. A mount damaged this far is knocked unconscious and cannot be summoned again for 5 minutes. Tamed animals do not consume any MP to upkeep; they are physical beings tied to the land.
Follower: The formal name for the Summoner's summoned creatures. Followers are contracted by the Summoner and called into this plane of existence from a spirit realm. Depending on the starting tier that a contract is available at, the nature of Followers varies. Many Followers are that of a specific member of a certain race, such as a Golem or Sylph. Thus, when a Summoner calls forth a Follower, there is a high chance that a previously contracted creature will be recruited again as a Follower.
Except for a few exceptions, the Summoner can control multiple Followers of the same race by forming another contract. Followers are summoned ready with the skills and equipment they require. The occasional Follower such as a Skeleton can be customized to wield special equipment. However, it is not necessary to upgrade their equipment, as the majority of their strength and durability depends upon the Summoner's level. A single Follower may be sustained in a safe zone, other Followers will be automatically desummoned.
Here are some rough estimates of the amount of MP consumed by a Follower depending on the Summoner Level:
Familiar: Familiars are a variant on Followers, except that they are controlled by classes that do not specialize in summoning arts. Such examples include the Familiars of the Druid class and the Shikigami of the Shaman class. Only one Familiar may be active at a time, making them exclusive partners rather than hired hands. They consume a similar amount of MP as a Follower of the same tier.
Eidolon: Sentient animal spirits that bestow their power onto Animists. They will be detailed upon the release of the Animist class.
