Do you believe in ghosts?
A light rumble came from the lips of the Assassin as he opened his eyes slowly, the sound of clicking and the feeling of a light nibble on his nose causing him to stir from his afternoon slumber. He reached up towards his face and nabbed the little creature which blocked his view, ultimately grabbing a level one Frenmic Rabbit as it pawed and nibbled at his face. It was a curious fellow it seemed, unwilling to really attack Saber either because it was smart enough to know the eight-nine level gap between them, or because it was just being playful. Though, Saber had no need to kill the little creature. Not anymore at least. His targets were much larger these days and tended to have much angrier faces. The little rabbit would be spared its life today. The Assassin did feel a little hungry though and his stomach released a light groan at the thought. The rabbit’s nose twitched.
“Look… food…” Saber mumbled and grinned, the edges of his lips just barely peeking out from underneath the scarf which covered his face. The rabbit’s eyes opened wide and it began to scurry, clawing at the Assassin’s shirt and hidden chestplate. The sudden reaction made Saber lean forward and he lifted the rabbit off his chest. The little paws with claws would have otherwise torn up his shirt, and Saber liked the shirt he was wearing as it was the same one he had been wearing since he started. Yes, not once had Saber changed his clothing. Only his armor and weapons were new. As an Assassin, he didn’t have much access to any kind of armor aside from the lighter stuff, so he didn’t bother with changing anything. Though, he did wash the clothes every three days. Sometimes he washed them at night after his training depending on how harsh the day had been. His care for his gear was the main reason he was able to make the clothes last so long, and there wasn’t any true excuse for them not to.
“Alright buddy… Simmer down...” The Assassin chuckled as the Rabbit continued to flail at him, its eyes still staring him down. With a gentle hand, he rested the little bunny down on his lap and ran his fingers through its fur, brushing it very gently to get it to calm down. With one hand, he pet the little guy, raking at its fur very gently while massaging its body with his fingertips. With the other hand, he opened up his menu and summoned forth a carrot. Said carrot he held out and allowed the rabbit to take. It immediately became relaxed and started to nibble at the food it had been provided. Saber chuckled at the sight and continued to pet the rabbit, rubbing at its little body very patiently. The large carrot was the equivalent of a feast, and it devoured the thing like a machine. There were no brakes on that train, and the rabbit made the orange vegetable slowly disappear into its stomach.
“You should’ve said you were hungry.” A smirk crossed Saber’s face as he watched the Rabbit near the end of its “lunch”, as it was currently midday from the location of the sun. The rabbit simply looked up at Saber for a moment and paused its meal.
“You dare give me orders, human?” The skill which passively operated was keyed as the Rabbit addressed the Adventurer. Saber’s own nose wiggled as he stared down at the white fuzz ball. What made things stranger was the fact that the lettering came up onto his display in a feminie color.
“Uh…” Saber’s tongue twisted around itself and the words on it were halted. Unable to come up with anything to respond with after a few seconds, the rabbit simply received a shrug as a response. It huffed and dropped the carrot.
“How sad. And I thought you had a brain!” The sassy rabbit kicked dirt at Saber and then swiftly dashed off. Before Saber could consider making rabbit stew out of the creature for its insolence, it vanished into a rabbit hole. The man sighed and shook his head at himself before cracking his neck, his back, and then stretching his arms up into the air.
Six hours of rest he had received today before being awoken by that rabbit, and it was well earned. Six hours ago he had finished a sixteen hour grinding run and his body was aching. He was very close to London, as there were level one creatures lurking (exhibit A being that Sassy Rabbit), but hadn’t made it because of sheer exhaustion. He was level ninety now and there wasn’t much of a reason for him to stay up for four or five days at a time. Slowly and steadily, his grinding runs were becoming shorter and he was finding himself meeting up with more people rather than going at everything by himself. His days as a lone player were coming to a close, and his need to be available for things was increasing. He had a Guild to run now, a strange fox lady “stalking” him that he needed to avoid, and research to complete. His focus these days were less on leveling up and more on actually doing things.
Though, then again, leveling was still fun and very profitable. The more time he spent fighting, the more money and items he retrieved. Yet it was starting to wear on him and he found the question, “is it worth it?”, becoming harder and harder to answer with a definitive response. Before, he would have gladly run out to the fields to fight without a single delay in his steps. Now he took his time, he walked rather than ran, and assisted people along the way rather then turn a blind eye. It was making the game more interesting than it was before, and it was more fun. Fun… A word he had forgotten was making its way back into his vocabulary. Same with the word “smile”. He wasn’t complaining.
“So… now what?” The Assassin lifted the nearly completely eaten carrot off the ground and eyed it, staring at the little nibble marks the rabbit had left. After a few moments of doing so, he sighed and carefully lifted himself up to his feet. Once again, he stretched his arms up into the air. His body was tight and still a little sore, but this soreness was more because of him sleeping funny. Trees weren’t as comfortable as beds anymore and Saber was starting to feel a little old. If he didn’t sleep in a bed, he found himself waking with more simple aches and sore limbs than he did before. It might have also been because of him not being as active as he was before too, as that was affecting him in many other ways as well.
“You forgot this, Sassy Buns.” The Assassin walked over to the little hole the female rabbit had dove into and spoke down into it. After he did, he placed the carrot at the entrance. He returned to the tree he had slept at once he did and picked up the pair of twin daggers he had placed behind where he was sitting, hiding them between where his back ways and the base of the tree. The daggers were set on his lower back, strapped down and holstered there for easy access during combat. Then, Saber summoned his bow and arrows, adjusting them on his back so that they sat a little more comfortably than how the game originally placed them. Today would be an easy day. Saber had no plans to do anything amazingly painful and had no dungeons in mind to do. Today would be his “Sunday”, or his day off.
“Let’s go see how the lower levels are doing…” The Assassin looked up towards the canopy and sighted the sun again up high in the sky; it was indeed the Afternoon. If that was the case, then there would most likely be a lot of newer players scrounging around getting into trouble. With that in mind, Saber pulled his cloak around his body and started to walk towards Londinium’s “training grounds”, or the areas where a lot of the lower levels tended to play.
