It was a rainy winter morning with temperatures not too high nor temperatures to low, one might actually go as far as to state it were a rather pleasant winter morning. But I do with the sun was shining softly and even though the sun was artificial it still radiated a soft, gentle and warm glow to those who were walking beneath it into streets of this new virtual world. The days before the current day had been days of snow and hail and ice, the kind of weather one might consider the proper sort of weather for the winter times. The weather foretold today would become a rather interesting day, spring would come soon enough all this was merely the eye of the storm that came by once a year, the storm one called winter. Either way, it was raining, the rain drops being a tad cold to the touch, though compared to the snow and hail of the days before. Both adventurers and Landers alike hurried along from booth to booth to avoid getting too wet. [break][break]

Bailin however had always enjoyed the rain and especially the sight it offered. Back in the real world he had lived near a shopping street and on Saturdays loads of people came and went to, well, show there. However on occasion it would rain, which would make the shoppers either take out their umbrella’s to fence of the evil raindrops that would ruin their hair and clothes or they would scurry from shop to shop, guarding their heads with newspapers or other objects that were at hand. It was always a comical view and one he had always enjoyed, the rain had never bothered him too much, except when he had to leave home to get somewhere and he were to become soaked within ten minutes after leaving the door, which was annoying. However, looking through the window in his room at the sight of scurrying people, running away from the rain was something that made him smile. It was a good thing, or so he felt, that small things like that hadn’t changed in this new life. Though this would probably also mean that he would catch a cold if he didn’t hurry up and get himself warm again, either a tavern or at home at the hearth. Today would be a good day if he could get at least started with his latest project. Though it was more a fun project to work on rather than something really important, curious as he was, Bailin enjoyed the thought of attempting to raise his accounting class. It was a class which would be rather hard to level up, especially compared to some of the other classes. It was a challenge and it was something new, two things be thoroughly enjoyed in both the real world and something that could reach almost into his soul in this one. In the real world he’d usually seek his challenge in games or books, in this world however, he could actually gain something real from it. As far as he saw it, in contrary to the digital rewards he would normally get in the games, out here, he would receive a real reward, though depending on how one looked at it, this too was a digital world, but for now it was life and life here was good so far. Things were a lot different but felt yet far more… familiar or interesting compared to the repetitive life outside this one. [break][break] In school he had not been that great with math, something he never was nor ever would be, however, accounting and finances was something he was pretty good at, at least that was what his grades told him. The basics as far as he understood them were simple as could be: don’t spend more than you get, the end mark should be either zero or plus and that was it. That was all there was too it, in the short version of course. Clutching in his right hand, nicely tucked away in his coat, Bailin held a pile of empty papers he had gotten from one of the many stores. In his pockets were both quill and ink. Though he wasn’t a scribe, writing numbers down shouldn’t pose too much of a problem. Striding quickly through the streets back to his home Bailin started humming and thinking on the best way to bring his task to a nice end and still keep it nice and organised. [break][break] ‘So, let me see, I think I should divide everything in about four sections, two for incoming funds, two for outgoing funds and one final section to get the end results nicely against one another. Both sections should be… quest income or outgoing and trade income or outgoing. Under trade outgoing should also be noted the costs for materials and such, for quest outgoing I think it should comprise the buying of supplies, weapons and armour as well as smaller things like maps or bribes or things like that. Income would be a lot easier; what did I get from doing that quest, what was the loot, what were the drops? For the trade income; what did I sell to whom and for how much, etcetera and such. The income is simple enough; the expenses will be a bit trickier.’ He thought as he marched along the shining, wet and cobbled street of Londinium.
Bailin kept following the road until he came to the riverside and there he took a few turns along sandy paths until he arrived at his house. The house itself wasn’t all that fancy and the garden looked more like a section of the First World War rather than a garden, but it was home, the watermill gently turning around as water cobbled underneath it, producing the kinetic energy required to make the wheel turn round and round. Entering his humble abode Bailin went to his office, bedroom, and armoury room. Gently he placed the papers and ink on the floor. The furniture was being constructed, however for now all he had was some chalk and a chalkboard upon which he could write and draw.

Sitting down on the floor he started scribbling down tittles and numbers, starting on the stash of papers on his left, the so called income papers. On his right he placed both the ink well and the outgoing funds papers. In the middle of the top of the page he wrote: Income, a tad larger than his usual writings. Underneath it, in letters a lot smaller but still readable he noted: page one, adventuring. [break][break]
“This would go so much faster on a typewriter or even better a computer.” Bailin said as he grumbled a bit. He was still working on the typewriter with Renshi, but it was rather monotone and so the two of them were taking it slow, making the parts in smaller batches. A computer, how useful though it might be, would have to wait a long, very long time. “Though… perhaps it could be done… if we can improve the mana shard batteries or perhaps use the water mill to power some batteries, which would store and supply the energy required for the computer… However, if the computer is not being used… the energy will build up and thus it would require a discharge lest the construction would overload due to the too large of a built up energy store… but I digress, even when talking to myself. The idea is nice but I think I would need more time and at least another chalkboard to even start drawing the basics…” he mumbled to himself, shaking his head in an attempt to focus upon the goal he had currently set himself upon. [break][break]
Refocusing on the papers in front of him Bailin dipped his quill into the inkwell and let the redundant ink gently drip back into the well before he took out the quill completely, as to prevent smudging. Gently he placed the tip of the quill against the paper and started writing again. First off, about one centimetre from the left edge of the paper he noted DATE, three centimetres further on the same line he scribbled down Adventure/Quest name and empty spaces until he had about five centimetres from the right edge of the paper left. There he scribbled down: Money Income.[break][break]
Waiting a few moments for the ink to dry, softly blowing the wet ink dry, as to speed up the process with the warmth of his breath. Once it had dried up he proceeded to make his first entry. Noting the date first, about two centimetres empty space, the name of the quest or adventure, some more spaces empty and then he noted the numbers of the monetary gains he had received from one of his earliest adventures. As he breathed the ink dry again he checked his writing for minor mistakes. Luckily there were none but when he noticed the date he had noted down he let out a chuckle. [break][break]
“Yea, I think that date is fine, but who can tell, I sure as heck haven’t kept track of the time out here. Heck I hardly ever kept busy with the dates and such out there in the real world and out here things are way, way too enjoyable to be bothered to keep the date and such. Though… for things like this it is indeed rather useful and practical to do so… Perhaps I should teach myself to keep track of things, just for the sake of keeping track of my funds.” He grumbled as he prepared to write down yet another line of quest or adventuring income. At least one did not have to do boring and repetitive jobs to gain an income; sure enough one could go into town and look for a job, however there were a lot more fun ways to gain money or items. The thrill of the chase, the rush of the hunt, the adrenaline rush one had during a fight, Bailin had loved it all and though the drops of loot were… interesting enough to risk the dangers of going mob or monster hunting, the risk were also a fair bit larger. One could die if one was not careful enough, though so far Bailin had been lucky and had not died… yet. Though he did not plan on changing that fact, there was always the risk of running into player killers or PK’ers, or perhaps even that one monster that would be a bit too much to handle. The trail of thoughts reminded Bailin he should check the combat options for his house. He had never bothered to check, assuming it would not be allowed inside the premises, but one could never be too certain. Bringing up the menu as the ink of the second line dried Bailin received confirmation that his house was indeed a no fight zone. Relieved he proceeded to the third line, thinking back on some of the adventures he had had by now. [break][break]

Waiting for the third line to dry Bailin gently placed the drying ink lined paper on the floor, placing the quill at an angle against the ink well, the tip of the quill leaning just a bit over the edge of the ink well. Gently he stood up, blood or anima or whatever he was made up of these days rushing down again into his legs. The sensation made him feel slightly alive, though mostly just in his legs as the warmth of blood or anima or what else flowed through them. Stretching the rest of his body Bailin shook his legs one by one, carefully avoiding the items he had placed upon the ground around him. [break][break]
“There has to be a nicer way to do this… I could use the board to write things down and place it into books later on…” he said to himself as he opened his inventory screen to select the chalk pieces. First he divided the board in two halves by drawing a straight line through the middle of the board, from top to bottom. Next he drew two lines at the top of each half, about five centimetres from the top edge of the board and in the middle of each respective half. Above the line on the left half he wrote: Income, whilst at the right half he wrote: Expenses.
Next up he divided the two halves further again, also from top to bottom, starting at the horizontal line he had drawn and written the respective words above. When he was done there were three vertical lines on the board and two horizontal. However he was not done yet. For his next preparation he drew again horizontal lines, this time four in total, all four a bit below the top lines. Upon these lines he wrote the other designated words, the words being: Quest, Trade, Quest and Trade, as he had intended to do with the paper version of his accounting endeavour. It seemed logical to Bailin to at least attempt to maintain the same style everywhere to make things easier for him when he had to look up things. It would be rather a bother to decipher all the different styles he could employ over time. [break][break] When he was done with the format of his accounting Bailin started scribbling down the spoils of war of his fourth adventure as well as the expenses he had made for them. So far he had little to no expenses and rather interesting loot from quests and other things, like his crafting. Though the mechanic business was far from booming it did give him some nice things. [break][break] Thinking back as he wrote things down he recalled how he once traded a music box for the chalks he now used to write. The board he had had to pay for it but the costs were small and were soon turned into profits through the income one of the quests he was on had generated.
Taking a step back he took a moment to appreciate his work, avoiding the things he had placed upon the floor as it would give a big mess if he spilled the ink over the floor and his papers. The numbers seemed to be in good order so far, though he was far from done. A quick scan showed his adventures had yielded quite a handsome profit as he took a look at his expenses, which were minimal compared to his income. Throwing up the chalk piece in his hand, making it spin in the air and catching it again, Bailin let out a sly smile.

“Alright, almost done I suppose, I just need to take over the notes on the board and put them down onto the papers. After that it is merely a matter of making a nice bookwork of these fine pages, probably also make some tabs, to keep track of what is where, as well as number the pages and create an index. “Bailin mumbled to himself as he sat down again, dipping the quill in the ink well and letting the excess ink drip out of the tip of the quill to prevent smudging his text. [break][break]
Gently he let the quill flow over the paper, scribbling words and numbers alike with a rather fine handwriting, something that had improved since his arrival in this new world. Back in the real world his handwriting used to be almost equal of that of certain doctors. Now however, it seemed at least readable, to most people at least. It took him quite a while to finish up on his writing. At the bottom right, on the end of the page, he started noting the total of that page, to make things easier for his future self, as he could just add all numbers at said bottom of the page up to come to a final total for the period over which he intended to keep his books. For now it was merely to keep a general track of his income and expenses in the early stages of the game, his new life. [break][break] After a few hours and about half an ink well later Bailin let out a sigh and gently placed the quill back in its resting position against the ink well as he gently took a small pile of papers in his hands, gently flipping the pages to see if he had missed anything or made some mistakes whilst writing and calculating things.

When he had finished the last check on his accounting papers Bailin gently stood up with a smile, the blood rushing back into his legs once more, filling them with some form of ecstasy whilst doing so. In his hand he gently held the small bookwork clutched between his fingers. The next thing he did was squat up and down two times to get the blood truly flowing and after his little work out he opened his inventory as to store his little booklet in it. “I should get paid to do this sort of thing. It is rather daft and monotone and not to mention a boatload of cross referencing and double checking… but on the other hand there are some perks coming paired with it.” Bailin mumbled to himself as he stretched his arms upwards, fingers interlocking with the palms facing towards the ceiling. [break][break]
“Maybe that is an idea… just offer to help people do their books for a small price of course because… well I can always use more money. “ Bailin said grinning as he rubbed his hands together, small lights dancing in his eyes. It was not because he was greedy but he always had a knack for gaining money, both in this world and the real world. Though it was true that gaining money in this world was a lot easier than it was in the real world, especially since here it was appreciated if one slaughtered a mob. In the real world one would probably end up in jail… and to boot, slaughtering mobs was more or less interesting; it had sent shots of adrenaline through his body every time he had been in a fight, were it from range or up close and personal. The thrill of the fight was something that was a big improvement on his situation, especially compared to the fact that fighting here was a lot more fun than in the real world and in this world there were near instant rewards. Said rewards would come in handy with getting a positive number at the end of each accounting attempt. However, adventurers had it easy on that part. Landers however did not, the risks they had to take to gain the rewards mobs offered were far greater and of a more permanent predicament compared to that of the adventurers. Thus they usually took to the safer jobs… but there were some brave Landers who would venture out and risk the dangers. Those would form a rather… interesting group to do the accounts for… of course the less adventurous Landers could form a rather interesting group in their own respects as they usually did produce most of the food and other things. “So perhaps a construction of sorts where I do the books for those Landers and they pay me in food… it would save me the bother of going to the town every now and again to stock up.” Bailin said to himself, grinning at the chalkboard as he wiped it clean so he could write upon it again.

“So that is the personal accounting. Now onwards to going to the guild related stuff. Let me see, if we were to acquire the Royal Naval Academy. It will cost us about 200.000 and I am fairly certain that I shall be required to pay most of it. However we have about twenty members now, probably even more, thus 10.000 per person would be fair, however, most of them are rather low levelled, so we should probably look at a fee of 200 gold pieces per person. That way they will not be hampered too much in their progress and it would make them feel more… connected in the guild as they had invested in the guild. Of course it would be rather symbolic, bringing down the total sum to 196.000 for my account. But I suppose it is all for the good for the guild. “Bailin mumbled as he scribbled the numbers on the chalkboard.
“So… I can either spend a load of money at once or perhaps put small amounts on the side every now and then. That should divide the strain on my bank account and as such be a bit more pleasant and give me some more short term options. I could indeed use some new gear as well as perhaps set aside the money for the acquisition of furniture and the likes. I suppose the furniture will cost about 2.000 gold pieces and the new gear would cost me about 5.000 gold pieces. Which would bring it down to roughly 207.000 total, and it would be wisest to make small deposits of about… 30.000 per deposit, which would roughly take me a few weeks to gather the required amount. Especially now I have a nice idea of what I’d roughly gain in a usual week or two. “he continued his ramblings as he calculated with the estimated numbers on the chalkboard, checking his new book of numbers and more number, with some numbers added in just for a change of scenery. As he wrote on the chalkboard small specks of chalk went floating through the room, gently, turning into small anima bubbles.

“Though, if I am not mistaken…. If I do it like this… and shit that there, pay that then, receive this on that date, I think I could save about 10% of the initial fee, bringing the total to about 200.000 instead of 205.000. If our lovely guild members would be so generous as to make donations regarding the guildhall it would save me a load of money. Though yet I am certain that I am probably the only one who is able to spend this much money all at once. Perhaps, I can expect a symbolic gesture of about 10.000 from the guild, which would bring down the funding costs to about 190.000. I suppose I can use the money I saved to open up a shop and workshop and generate a more steady supply of income. Which in its own turn will generate enough funds for me to receive more possibilities for me and perhaps the guild, if I feel generous enough to share my wealth, that is the question, is it not?” Bailin said mumbling as he wrote down the math on the chalkboard. [break][break] Flipping over the paper of his accounting booklet Bailin started a new table, one at which he wrote the projected costs, the true costs, item and selling price for items he could produce. A last group was added, labelled as: research. Placing the piece of chalk on his lower lip, gently tipping it on and off, he started pondering, staring at the chalkboard. [break][break]

“Right, so they taught me this in school… and mom and dad more or less always were doing this stuff, I should almost say I am genetically biased to be good at this, as well as being taught, so a nature combined with nurture so to speak… Let me see, it was assets equals liabilities or loans and some other thing I can’t remember the name of. If I were to make this a balance sheet I would make a three line table like this…” Bailin murmured as he started making the table on the chalkboard, erasing the quick calculations he had just made. [break][break] Tipping the chalk against his lower lip again Bailin started to make a quick draft in his mind as to where he should put all the pieces of the financial puzzles. “So if I were to buy another house or shop… I think it would cost me about 2.250 however 2.500 is the easier number, which would make the house go into the assets section, and the money will go into the liabilities or expenses. The next bit would be the guild hall, which I could probably lower to about 180.000, but again 200.000 is the nicer number and according to Murphy’s Law: bad things will happen, so I will presume to have to pay more and as such estimating the expenses at 200.000 would seem wiser. Paying less would be nice, but best be safe on these matters. “Bailin continued to murmur as he wrote down the numbers and items on the board. Talking to himself made his ideas seem either less stupid or even smarter than they were and as such he had developed that habit. [break][break] “All right, so that would make me swap assets from 235.000 gold pieces to 235.000 worth of property. If things go well I think I will have an overestimated worth of about 22.500 gold pieces. I think I should put that in the third line or perhaps not yet, as it is merely an estimate and not the total worth of what has been paid for the property.” He thought as he let the chalk piece in his hand float mid-air as he stopped himself from writing down the numbers. “Yes, it would more assuredly mess up the math and I can’t have that, not yet anyway. “[break][break]

“Hmmm, I wonder and ponder what dastardly plans lay yonder. What if I were to make a simple household tab. The housing is simple math and are indeed but a single expense, however, food and drinks require a steady supply if foods and drinks." Saskia especially likes wine and though she had brewer as her crafting class, she had yet to start even working on it, which struck Bailin as a tad odd as she did enjoy a good bottle of wine, being able to drink it away glass for glass in a single night or even shorter a time span if she were to put a serious effort into it. Bailin himself preferred a good glass of whiskey once in a while, just to sit near the hearth in a comfortable chair, the fire burning gently and preferably with a good book, though he still had to find all of those items, despite the furniture being in the making in a relatively short while. [break] [break] “Hmmm, let me see, if we were to spend about 100 gold pieces on both drinks and food per person, if would come down to this. The value of each would be 50, keeping a nice balance. However on occasion there are certain price influxes and as such I think it would be wisest to name all goods bought and add an odd one into the mix for… certain other goods… of course it would be purely fun and hypothetical but… it would still be fun to do and show me how far the system will let me… manipulate things. I feel like… rice today. So if we were to buy bread and ham for a value of 25 each, tea and wine likewise… I think I should give rice a value of 25. This brings the total per person to 125 gold pieces and 250 for the two of us. So the next part would be to make it look less… suspicious and as such we should try and get our hands on some rice every now and then. “Bailin mumbled and calculated on his chalkboard. [break] [break] “Hmmm, who was it again Saskia said she thought would be interested in these kinds of things. I might be able to convince that fellow to let me do his books, I might make a bit of money out of it as well as raise my accountant skill a bit, though I cannot remember his name…. Spa… Spanes… argh his name keeps turning into a shovel, like on my M.U.T but not as fancy. It shall matter not, for now I will continue to grind my accountant skill on my own, maybe one day I might actually be able to do more things with it except count money and be able to shift it about in such a way it saves me money. Though… if I were to open up a accounting office it would indeed boost my levelling process a lot faster, it might even give me someone to talk to, other than myself, during the long hours of calculating and grinding.” Bailin continued his mutterings as he rechecked his work. “But back on track again, how will I get my hands on genuine rice… the rice would normally have been dried and uncooked, placed in a closed and preferably air tight container or frozen… Now frozen might work if we could train ice elementals, use ice spells or improve the refrigerator. However, that leaves us with a rather nasty problem… how in the name of the holy banana’s would we get to the Asian part of the game… if it is even possible at all. I suppose the faerie gates could offer a solution… or a ship. We could… build a sailing ship, I suppose the costs to develop a proper sea worthy one would come down to about 500.000 or more… but I suppose the income that could be generated from such trips would be enormous. I mean… if memory serves and the books were right… those trips could triple their initial cost, though it did take almost a year to go back and forth… so I suppose it would take about six months here. So we would have to develop steamships at the least, as to make it a really short trip. However developing those would cost about one million, probably closer to two or three million, in sheer material costs, though if game mechanics are slightly based on the prices during the colonial age, of course a bit more balanced and such, I suppose two or three trips should break us even.” Bailin theorised as he saw the mighty ships of old before his eyes, sailing the rough seas to trade goods all over the globe. Of course all he had seen them in were movies and games, but still, the thought left him longing for a large adventure, a trip to the end of this world, to find its limits. The extra bonus was that the thought made him feel slightly relieved as the accounting he had spent almost all day on was boring, even more so when one were to compare it with the thrill of adventure and sailing. Snapping out of his daydream of sailing the open seas Bailin started erasing all he had scribbled down on the board before. “No, no, this will not do, this is pure speculation and as such great for theoretical accounting and keeping shadow bookings but for true and genuine accounting, this cannot and shall not be!” Bailin said, annoyed with himself for letting him go on and on for so long and getting so far adrift from his primary goal: raising his accounting level in the proper manner, how tedious that might be. Cleaning his fingers of chalk dust, or rather the idea of chalk dust on his fingers, Bailin stored the chalk crayons in his inventory and started rubbing his eyes with his thumb and index finger. He had never let people know he had two functioning eyes and the eye patch was merely a cosmetic thing, as well as improve his ranged accuracy or at least that was what someone once told him or something he had read back in the real world. He had been named pirate due to the eye patch by people he had met, which made him laugh a bit and it did give him a more… coarse look combined with his trimmed beard, but still, a pirate he could never be… or could he? Being a pirate would be rather easy to accomplish in this world, though it would mean killing other players, something he had done before and most of it those times had left him untouched, so to speak, though the thought of having to kill people over some loot, with him being the bad guy, felt like a bridge too far. Killing bad people was never a bad thing, but killing people who were merely present was an entirely different matter and as such, Bailin stored the idea of piracy in his mind to collect some mental dust. [break][break] “Alright, so as for a quick recap of today, as my mind keeps drifting off, which would indicate I am done with accounting, which I agree on; I did the loot and expenses tab, I checked how would go if I were to buy the guild hall and shop and at the end I even theorised about piracy and inter… server trade, I suppose… all in all a nice day of work, except for the thought trailing off and such. It makes me wonder why on earth I took the accounting skill.” sighed Bailin as he started putting things in his inventory, placing his eye patch on again. Opening the door he gently stepped through it, looked back once more into the room and closed the door. [break][break]
