Appearance Were someone to look at Griff and Gwyl next to each other, there is no way you would be able to tell they were the same person. Not just because Gwyl's an elf, or his azure hair, but more prominantly because of just how terrible Griff looks. Having been in a car accident during his driving lessons at seventeen where he was rear-ended by another car at high speeds, he suffered severe spinal trauma and wound up becoming a paraplegic. Ever since, his body's just been getting worse and worse - slacken hair, bags under his eyes, a pallid complexion, he just looked extraordinarily lifeless. Gwyl, in comparison, is Griff living out his fantasies of a normal life. Thin, athletic, with a slightly tanned complexion and muscled to a tee, Gwyl is extremely attractive, especially compared to his real life counterpart. It even fits his personality quite well; standing at just over six foot and being well built, there's certainly a mature elder brother touch to his figure. Despite the fact that he's not a member of the ritual race, he is often mistaken for one due to the sheer amount of tattooes that he has covering his body. He was always interested by the relic people but didn't like playing someone so weak and instead got a relic artist to tattoo his body during his first few months as a player. Due to always hating the gowns that he was forced to wear in the hospital and in rehab, Gwyl has taken to strutting around half naked and only putting his armor on during battle. There's something about the sensation of this world's wind on his body that he loves. | Personality Extraversion Sensing Feeling Perceiving The Entertainer Gwyl is very much the sort of person who needs to enjoy himself. Having started going on Log Horizon as a form of therapy to break him out of his depression, he has since decided to make this world a better place for everyone in it, and actively focuses on that rather than morality. Rather than thinking about right or wrong, or about whether he should be honest or dishonest, Gwyl considers situations for what people will get out of it. If being honest will hurt someone's feelings, he'll tell white lies and make them feel better. Because of this, he seems very much to be the older brother type to his friends. As the old mantra says, "strangers are just friends you haven't met yet." Gwyl actively takes this to heart and treats everyone around him as if they're good friends; willingly spending hours on projects he gets nothing out of because someone has asked to, protecting someone from bullies, even running in and killing high level beasts if someone is likely to wind up being sent to the cathedral. That being said, this does not mean that he's perfect and untouchable by disdain. Because of his high capacity for love, he also has a high capacity for anger, but is generally direct about it. Even if it's likely he'll get his ass kicked, he'll tell someone exactly what he thinks of them or their plan. Finally, his strongest and weakest point is his empathy. Having been down and out himself, he's very much a sucker for other people's soft stories and will always put himself out of his way to take care of others. Unfortunately, this is often taken advantage of, and he's a little too soft on those he considers to be friends. |

Biography
Griff had a pretty average childhood - Nothing really stood out that much with him; sure, he was a relatively good kid, and he kept good grades, and he managed to have a circle of four friends, but that was pretty much expected in St Dogmaels where he grew up. It was a quiet sea-side town that didn't appreciate any nonsense, and so he had very little opportunity to get into anything bad.
His mother was a full time carer at one of the nearby nursing homes, so he spent a lot of time with his father, who had a nine to five job as an IT consultant in a firm in a nearby city. His father was a huge tech nerd, and even though it never really appealed to Griff in the same way he learned from an early age to appreciate gaming.
Things turned different when he got into the final years of Secondary school. Deciding that he wanted a good job, he decided to buckle down and get good grades so that he could get into a good university. He cut off a lot of his social links to study as hard as he could, and this meant that he sank even harder into games as a cushion. Dating sims, FPS shooters, online puzzle games, the one area he never really touched was MMOs.
Eventually, that isolation paid off and he got offers from amazing universities, including the university of lancaster, as he was going for a business degree. Not wanting to have to depend on anyone else for this, he convinced his father to let him take driving lessons and though he wasn't very good at it at first his sheer determination convinced him to keep at it. He flunked the theory test three times before he finally passed it and was a week away from taking the final test when the accident happened.
During one of his final lessons to make sure that he was absolutely confident on everything, he stumbled onto the path of a drunk driver filled with road rage. It's still not entirely clear what happened, but it seems that the other driver didn't stop in time and slammed into the back of his car at such high speeds that his car was thus slammed into the one before him that had stopped for the traffic light, leaving both him and his mentor to get sandwiched between both cars.
The car was crushed due to the sheer amount of force exerted on it, and the dashboard slammed into his stomach as his seatbelt detached from the mount, and his head slammed through the window. He was bloody and seriously struggling to breathe, leading to him passing out from the shock. On the plus side, his mentor was almost entirely fine.
--
The next few hours were hell. He had lost consciousness from the shock, and had to be taken to the hospital. Once there he was put on a life support machine as his lungs had been pierced by one of his ribs when he hit the dashboard. It took around a week for him to finally wake out from the coma, much to the eventual gratitude of his parents. The mentor got the number of the car that hit them, and his parents were currently in the process of suing both him and the car company for their defective product.
He, on the other hand, was nowhere near as grateful. According to the doctors, his spine had been damaged by the force of the impact, and that meant that he was paralyzed. He would be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life, and would have to take painkillers for god knows how long. To make it worse, the day that he woke up from the coma was his eighteenth birthday. It was a hell of a way to become an adult.
The following months was an absolute hell. In the ensuing depression, he quit school, and took to drinking. He could afford it himself, and he was physically strong enough to wheel himself to the corner store down the street. This was bad enough on its own, but if anyone has ever taken painkillers and alcohol at once, you will know how dangerous it is to your health. On more than one occasion, his parents yelled at him for "trying to kill himself" and, to be completely honest, more than once they were actually right on the money with their accusation
Attempting to break him out of the depression, his father talked him into joining him in one of his father's favorite games. That game, as it turned out, was Elder Tales. At first, Griff was very hesitant to join, but as the weeks carried on he eventually got seriously into it.
Before the event, he was slowly getting better. He had broken out of his depression for the most part, and though he still looked very much pathetic and weak, he was planning on applying to university once again next year. You might expect, therefore, that the cataclysm would bring him back into the depression.
As it turns out, it couldn't be further from the truth. He got his legs back, and with it, he got his hopes and dreams. Furthermore, he sees it as his opportunity to give back to everyone who was kind to him. They kept him from dying and saved him from his misery, so he wants to do the same to everyone else.
