Do you believe in ghosts?
It was an almost completely quiet ride to the city of Margate from where William and Saber had met, except for the occasional humming that came from William. It wasn’t an annoying tone but one which was extremely repetitive. By the time he knew it, Saber was mentally playing the tune along with his new acquaintance. It didn’t bother him though like it would have if the song was something stupid. No, this song had a meaning to it and there was a nagging feeling behind the sound; it was something William brought with him subconsciously. It was a burden of sorts, as if he was being forced to remember the song. Yet, the Lander continued to smile even as he sang. Nothing seemed to bring this man down and that was commendable. William was aging, Saber could see that on the man’s face now that he was closer, but he continued to feign youth. Even as his clothes and cart showed that he had many miles under his belt, William did not let his strength waiver. It was almost sad.
“Ah the city of Margate.” William said aloud in a joyful tone. His teeth shimmered in the light as he smiled. Saber let out a tired rumble and shifted slightly in his seat. The Assassin wanted to continue his chase, but now that he knew where the home base of the group was he considered taking a nap.
“It’s a lovely city, even though it may seem a little run down.” William began to speak without asking if Saber wanted to hear. It was almost as if the Lander didn’t care but that was fine, neither did Saber. To Saber, Margate was just a destination, a location where his targets were hiding at. That was it.
“You should check out the Gleaming Cat when you get a chance. It’s a nice place and the owner is a very pretty woman.” William’s wide smile turned into a soft smirk as he glanced over at Saber, but the Assassin remained quiet. He didn’t exactly want to start a conversation with William, as the Lander was simply providing a ride. He was just a tool for transport. After Saber reached the city, the two would never meet again. Plus, why the hell would he go to a place called the Gleaming Cat? It sounded like some kind of run down pub with nothing else going for it. Saber had more important matters to deal with than getting a quick drink. William seemed more focused on the actual city than doing his business with it. No wonder he didn’t have any money. But, thankfully, William did have a brain. After his attempts to spur a conversation failed, he remained silent for the remaining trip. It wasn’t a long silence as Margate was closing in.
“Here we go.” The words were like a trigger for Saber, and the Assassin lowered his head a little to cover some of his face. William remained sitting upright as they approached the front gate. It was open, but two guards blocked the path by standing in front of the horse. William carefully tugged on the reigns, alerting his horse to stop rather than just trot over the two fellows. Once the cart came to a halt, a third guard approached the side Saber sat on.
“Good afternoon, Sir!” William spoke loudly and leaned backwards so that the guard could see him, but the guard seemed to stare at Saber for a bit of time before finally looking over at William.
“State your business.” The Guard was curt and his voice was rough, demanding, but William kept his smile. The strange fellow didn’t scare easily at least.
“I’m just a wandering merchant is all! I bring goods from Londinium; fresh wears and some other goods from the Adventurers there. I also have some special goods from the far West. The Irish lands are bristling with good harvests, and I’ve come to share it with Margate.” As William spoke, the Guard continued to take a few sharp glances at Saber, but the Assassin kept himself in his secretive state. Once William finished speaking, there was a bit of silence. Though, the Guard finally caved. He let out a sharp whistle and waved his fellows out of the horse’s path.
“Enjoy your time in Margate, and don’t cause any trouble.” The second bit was more so directed towards Saber, and the Assassin lightly nodded his head in a defiant bit of agreement with the words. Yet, a thin smirk crossed his face. He would not cause any trouble, oh no, but he would not just sit back and let it run over him either. As William thanked the man and their path was cleared, the deviant villain in his cloaked shadow entered the port city. If only the Guards had searched him, they would have discovered who he was; an enemy. Margate was a city for those who had run away from reality and those who had abandoned the truth. They were liars to themselves and everyone around them and they had caused a lot of pain and fear to those in Londinium. The game may be their new reality, but Londinium was Saber’s home. The fools from before had terrorized it, and now… Saber would terrorize theirs.
The cart passed steadily through the open gates, the horse pulling the cart and the two men underneath the small wooden walkway which created the symbolic “door” to the city. As they passed throug, Saber lifted his head and took in a deep breath. He inhaled the smell of salted oxygen and fresh food, and listened to the sounds of the bristling new landscape. He opened his eyes and took in the colorful view before him. Margate was just as William had said; it was a lovely city and it was far more alive than Londinium. People of the Land walked all through the streets carrying all sorts of goods and items in baskets and over their shoulders. They chatted in doorways, from windows, and even as they walked. It was a noisy place to say the least, which took away from the city’s beauty, but there were also hundreds of people so it was expected. What Saber did not expect however, was the lack of Adventurers in sight.
As William very easily guided his horse and cart through the city, Saber let his eyes wander as he searched for any signs of his targets. But instead of finding them, he found much more. He took in the new style of architecture, which reminded him more of the actual old-style European homes than the run down heaps back in Londinium, and bathed in the glory of the new city. It became very apparent that the folks in the area took care of their home. The houses and buildings were void of any signs of wear, the cobblestone pathway was clean and clear of debris, there was no trash lying on the sides of the streets, the alleys were well lit, and businesses were neatly organized to their designated locations rather than just strewn out all over the place. It was a city with a backbone and one which demanded respect. Within just a few minutes of being in the city’s walls, Saber knew the type of people the Landers who were walking around him were. They were prideful, honest, and extremely caring. It was no wonder of why the Guards seemed highly protective. Though, if these people cared so much about their city and the lands around it; why did they house criminals? That was something which did not make much sense.
“I love this place…” William muttered finally, snagging Saber’s attention. The Player glanced over to see the Merchant smiling warmly, his head held high. William seemed at home here and looked quite comfortable as he easily navigated the streets of the port city, making each turn with relative ease as he moved to his own destination. Saber found it almost amazing, but then again; William was a traveler. He had probably been to Margate several times in the past. Saber had seen many towns and cities, but nothing as extravagant as this one.
Margate was a city which was alive in the virtual world. It was a city untouched by the destruction that ravished the other cities and its people seemed ignorant to the rest of the terror of the land. It was as if Margate was in a whole different dimension entirely. Saber felt uncomfortable here. The city was too clean, too perfect, to be a part of Elder Tale. Margate was something of an exception, and one which could only be seen as some sort of escaped convict of sorts. There was something more to this place than Saber could see, but he couldn’t say that for a fact. Not yet at least.
“Thank you for the ride, William.” Saber glanced over at the Lander, which gave him a smile in response. How could this man be so happy?
“It was my pleasure, Saber. I hope you enjoy yourself here. Should you need a ride anywhere, feel free to seek me out. I would much like to hear about some of your adventures.” A gentle tug on the reigns eased the man’s horse to a stop. The cart quickly paused in the middle of the street, allowing Saber to dismount. Once his feet touched stone, he turned around and extended a hand. William stared at it for a moment, but then firmly grasped the Assassin’s hand. His lips pulled into a wide grin.
“Take care of yourself.” Saber said as he retracted his hand. William laughed.
“You as well! Be sure to check out the place I mentioned to you! I think you’ll find something useful to you there!” As he spoke, William snapped the reigns and began on his way. Saber wiggled his nose for a moment before turning away from the Lander. Almost if on cue, a group of three guards turned the corner from where William had come from. Immediately, the Assassin slipped into a candy store that was located across the street from where he had been dropped off, pulling the door closed behind himself with a gentle tug. A set of bells jingled by his left ear as he peered out of the small window, watching the guards pass by.
“A-hem…” The guards passed, but Saber was not safe yet. As he stood there in the door, the shopowner made a loud noise from where she stood just a few paces behind him. The sound, as well as the realization of where he was, caused Saber to internally sigh. He closed his eyes and lowered his head for a moment, letting his mistake sink in. He probably looked sketchy as hell.
“Is there anything I can help you with…. Sir?” Saber turned to his right as the woman spoke and looked at her for a few moments. She was short, had long hair which was tied up into a sort of bun, and had an extremely familiar feature to the Assassin; elven ears. Though, this woman was a Lander, so the Elvish look was the only thing the two beings shared. But, with a quick glance around the room, he discovered that she also had something he needed. Well, something he wanted.
“Do you have any sugar?” Saber said as he mentally noted that he was in a candy store. Though, at his question, the woman didn’t reply. She simply tilted her head for a moment.
“Are you an idiot?”
“Ah the city of Margate.” William said aloud in a joyful tone. His teeth shimmered in the light as he smiled. Saber let out a tired rumble and shifted slightly in his seat.
