“Hey, have you heard about the Sages?” Sayha overheard a small group of adventurers talking among themselves.
“Of course, who hasn’t?” one of them replied.
“I thought it was just a rumor going around,” another admitted.
“Well, it’s no rumor,” the first person spoke, “I heard from a direct source?”
“Through how many chains?” the third one asked.
“A friend of a friend of a Lander,” the second one guessed.
“Close enough,” the first one agreed.
“Well, I’ll pass on whatever ‘adventure’ you go on. For all we know, it’s a drinking game,” the third one laughed. The group left, except for the one who brought up the topic.
“I overheard your chat with your friends,” Sayha said once the others were out of earshot, “They sound like keepers to me. If you put them in the fire, they may just finally take off like a hot air balloon.”
“That’s kind of harsh,” the guy replied.
“Reality is harsh,” Sayha shrugged, “but I digress. Anyway, I wanted to ask you about the Sages.”
“Ah, so there is a believer after all.”
“I wouldn’t go that far. I’ve heard whisperings about them all over town recently, and I’m just trying to figure out what’s going on. Is it some sort of event or legendary questline or whatever?”
“To be honest, I have no idea,” the guy shrugged, “Like I said to my friends, I didn’t hear it directly from a Sage.”
“So who did you hear it from?”
“There were some Landers talking about it. I think one of them was an apprentice. The apprentice was talking to a large group of adventurers in one of the inns in town. He said that his circle had unearthed knowledge of some ancient civilization or something along those lines.”
“How ancient is ancient?”
“Who knows with how twisted the timeline has become, but supposedly it’s older than the last known civilization which would have been the Alves.”
Before the Catastrophe, Sayha had been an avid video gamer and had previously looked into playing the Elder Tales game’s lore while waiting for Unfounded Kingdom to come out. From what she remembered, she knew that there were mages and sages that were mentioned from time to time through raid storylines and even flavor text on items. The idea of a circle of sages discovering something wasn’t out of the world insane.
“Any idea if these sages were referenced on any item’s flavor text before?” Sayha asked.
“Not that I know of,” the guy shrugged, “but maybe my friends are right. It does sound kind of insane.”
“Possible but not probable,” I responded, “Did the apprentice say anything else?”
“Yeah,” he nodded, “they said that if any adventurer was interested, the sages were holding a public conference in the large garden square later today.”
“Thanks for your time,” Sayha nodded and headed north. If the conference wasn’t a joke and it would be held in the large garden square, it would be a good idea to get there early and find a perch to watch and see what was going on.
