The Neverbreaking Shield Day One
Scroll within the boxIt was morning in the Unfounded Kingdom. Sayinh slept in his underwear, hanging in the vines approximately twenty feet above ground. A calm breeze was silently drifting across the scene, making the leaves whistle softly. The forest was always so beautiful at this time of year. Fall. Where the trees turned golden orange, leaving the entire clearing in in a beautiful harmony of colors.
A drop of water fell from a leaf, located on an untouchable spot in the tree’s massive crown, and hit Sayinh at the top of his neck. The impact caused a shiver through Sayinh’s entire body. It made him wake up abruptly, causing him to entangle himself into the green, thick vines. A couple of seconds passed before Sayinh calmed down, looking down towards the ground, as he slowly woke up. Drowsily untangling himself, he started thinking of what he should occupy himself with that gorgeous autumn day. As he finally escaped the vine-prison, he hung in one arm, ready to drop to the ground. He let go of the vines, and felt the wind blow through his hair as he fell towards the mossy ground at the bottom. At the same time he landed, he intentionally fell backwards onto his butt, staring blindly at the light orange sky.
“Damn, finding stuff to do is quite difficult at the moment”, Sayinh said as he sat there for a couple of seconds before slowly rising again. A song went through his head as he started to suit up.
“Never thought that we would end up.. here, should’ve known it from the start”, he silently sung, followed by humming further of the song whilst looking at a bunny, slowly hopping towards him with great big eyes.
As his head finally started to clear up a bit, he set sails towards the quest board. There was almost 110% certainty that he would find something to do there. However, first he needed to put on his pants… otherwise… you get the point! Treading quickly and lightly around the various branches that stuck out from the sides of the path, he was leaving the clearing on; the sun was already burning in his neck. The prickling feeling of the skin, as if a thousand needles slightly pierced the flesh on his neck. Looking ahead, the forest opened up towards the city of Londinium. The streets filled with the smell of food, and the happy people in the festival of spring. Walking down the streets, visiting the different stands selling various types of stuff. Everything from Cooked Rabbit, to metal gears for crafting.
One of the stands stood out a lot, despite it being in such a populated area. It was more of an ‘order and leave’ booth, considering it was an actual building, than a stand. Looking up at the signs above the young people’s heads, Sayinh browsed through the menu of this excessively fine booth called “Wrapz’n’Quickies”. The name made its point, most of menu consisted of different types of wraps. Chicken wraps, kebab wraps, vegetarian wraps. They had everything that could satisfy your needs in very short time. - It may be early in the morning, but hey, it looks delicious! -, Sayinh thought as he lined up to order.
“Well hello boy, what can I do for you today?”, the girl standing on the other side of the desk, looking to be approximately the same age as him, asked. She was wearing a lovely t-shirt, with “No escape isn’t your doom” written across the slightly bulging chest.
“Hmpf, boy…”, he mumbled, giving the girl a stare as if she did something wrong. How could she possibly have known that he was 17.. He looked 14, so many has mistaken him for a boy.
“Yes, I would like a kebab wrap, preferred with extra salad please”, the Guardian politely said, faking a smile to the girl as he paid her the asked price of the wrap.
“Alright, it’ll be ready in less than 5 minutes”, the girl said, as she checked it in with the chef in the back.
A sizzle sounded from the kitchen, as the smell of meat hung around the area. Sayinh peeked in behind the girl standing in front, taking orders. The kitchen was filled with all kinds of delicious meat, salad and accessories. One big sniff, made the Guardian start drooling as never before, getting all jumpy as he saw his wrap being stuffed into the rectangular cardboard box.
“Kebab wrap, with extra salad incoming!”, was heard as the chef placed the wrap in a little container holding finished meals.
“Alright!”, the girl enthusiastically said with a broad smile across her unscathed face.
“There you go boy. Here’s your wrap”, she said, with eyes and lips scarlet red. Her innocence was annoying, and her energy too. -Holy damn, I just woke up! Don’t yell like that, right into my face! -, Sayinh thought as he found himself nomming on the dough holding the salad, kebab and other various ingredients in the wrap. Just looking at it, Sayinh knew most of the filling it contained. It was a light, airy dough, made of flour, butter, baking powder, eggs and yeast. Seasoned with a bit of salt, and a tiny bit of fresh pressed garlic. The golden dough was filled with a green and fresh salad that crunched whenever you took a bite of it. On the counterpart, the kebab was solid yet tender, and had this great taste of home. The piece of lam, giving the salad, tomatoes, onions and mild sour cream dressing love, making the symphony of various tastes he knew so well. This one was different from the others he had tried before. There was something about the meat, it was even better than what he was used to. Not quite sure of what it was, he walked around the booth, seeking to have a little chat with the chef.
A door was open, giving the Guardian a straight path right towards the chef, even though there were no more than a couple of meters between them. The door was made of fine oak, painted in silvery paint, almost as glossy as the Guardians hair. With a slow, shy approach, Sayinhs head peeped from the doorframe before clearing his throat and asking calmly.
“Uhm, hello? Can I speak with you for two seconds? You can remain in the kitchen, if you want to of course. It’s just… uhm, you see, I’ve just bought your kebab wrap.”
This was where he realized that it sounded like a complaint, which it of course was not. It was just a question about the meat, which was delicious. Therefore, he slightly tilted backwards whilst he lifted his arms in from of him, still carrying the half-eaten wrap.
“Don’t get the wrong idea here”, he said, with a gigantic smile.
“This isn’t a complaint… I, uhm, I am just wondering what you have done to your meat? Because I really like it, and I know you have seasoned it with something... I just can’t quite put my finger on what though”, and so, he had asked his now incredibly awkward question. Not that the question itself was awkward, but the way he asked it was.
A couple of seconds passed before the chef, standing no more than a meter from him, answered with a simple smile.
“Sure, I understand. I am having a break in half an hour or so, depends on the amount of customers waiting in line. Can you wait till then?”
An energetic nod was given, as Sayinh’s eyes started sparkling. -Food, food, food, god I love food! -, he thought, jumping all the way to a nearby bench placed in a convenient spot. He leaned up against the top of the bench as he opened the wrap. The filling almost flew out of the wrap-dough as he took the first bite. Having the sun burning again made Sayinh miss sunscreen, and he used to hate to have to put that white, cold, glue-like substance on his body. It only made him even paler than he was already. It was only spring, and yet, it still felt like it was summer.
A couple of kids were running around with sticks, it looked as if they were having their own little one on one fighting tournament. 3 boys and a single girl. Sayinh leaned back at the front palm of his feet, as he took another bite of his delicious rod of dough, folded around vegetables and meat. He lifted his hand before happily yelling to the kids.
“Haiyo. What are you all doing? I saw you swinging around with the sticks just a moment ago. Would you mind if I would join you? ”
The kids looked up at Sayinh, funnily enough since normally he would be the one looking up at people. Finding his shield from his inventory, he sat down, munching down the last bit of his wrap.
“Can he join us?” one of the boys asked the others.
“Mhm!” the girl hummed. She giggled as she picked up another stick from the ground, and put out her arm.
“Thanks!”, Sayinh politely said, looking the girl in the eyes as she gave him the stick.
“Would you mind to go against me? All of you? Then I’ll try to defend myself against you four, only using my shield and this stick. Does that seem fair for you guys? It won’t be long… I have to get back in 15 minutes or so, but we can still do quite a bit in that amount of time.
“Well… we can try, right guys?”, one of the boys asked the others. He had glistering black hair, and blue eyes. In addition, he was smaller than the Guardian himself, which was always a bonus, even though it does not say much, since he was a kid.
Sayinh pulled up his shield, having it float in front of his chest. The stick he had been given had a twig shooting out of the main part, seemingly resembling a guard. A rough edged Rapier maybe. Not quite what he was used to, but he would make it work… probably. Taking his stance, the four kids jumped out into each their own corner. - Basic, but rather effective strategy. Now I cannot focus on just the one side, but have to be aware of all 4. This miiiight be tougher than I first thought. -, and he was right. The group of minors gave each other a quick nod, and then they slowly started rotating in a circle, whilst moving slowly forward. As the black-haired boy moved towards the Guardians 6, he charged inwards. Sayinh had seen this coming, and was already ready to block the incoming charger. Very few milliseconds went by before the others charged forwards too. - Damn, hadn’t seen this coming. -
Sayinh quickly jumped, performing a backflip over the head of the charging boy. As soon as his feet left the ground, the Guardian threw his shield onto his back for protection. The quick response from the boy was to pierce his ‘sword’ up in the sky, in hopes of hitting him in the back. Unluckily for the boy… the Guardian had already taken the precaution and was not hit. He was excessively serious against these kids… After all, it was just for fun. The kids just gaped at Sayinh, but quickly snapped out of it and started laughing and jumping around. Well, cannot blame them, we all know that children has the concentration of gold fish. Sayinh felt like the fighting stopped that instant, and did not want to restart it. No reason to be so serious all the time.
It was fun. Even though they weren’t nearly the same age as he, it was fun. Finding himself enjoying the time with kids was not something he used to do. To be honest, he wasn’t quite used to this, but it’s a whole different world too, he shouldn’t compare it to the old one.
“Chaaaaarge!” the boy with the black hair yelled. No more than a couple of seconds afterwards, the kids rammed Sayinh, throwing him onto his back.
“We got you!” he said, laughing as they all laid upon the Guardian. Sayinh’s vague giggle turned to a full-out laughter.
“Hahaha, you sure did buddy!”, he said, smiling of pure happiness.
“Sir, you wanted to talk with me, yes?”, the Guardian heard a little bit behind him.
“Yes! Coming! Give me a sec!”, he said, whilst he slowly got onto his knees.
“Sorry, I’ll be back sooner or later”, he said to the kids, mainly the black-haired boy though.
“Before I leave, what is your name?”.
“Charles!” the boy happily responded.
“Charles Lockwood”.
The Guardian nodded in confirmation, and turned around.
“See you later then Charles!”, he said as he waved to the boy.
“Mhm!”, Charles answered.
The Guardian walked back towards the chef, standing at the bench.
“Hello”, the chef said.
“You asked for me to come speak with you yes?”.
“Yes. I was thinking about what you had done with the meat in your delightful wrap. When I took my first bite I tasted a bit of curry and garlic, am I right?”, Sayinh asked.
“Correct, though I can’t tell you how we prepare the food… it’s a business secret. I hope you understand” the chef replied.
“I know all about it… Before I came here, my parents were running a great company. Though that was in the past, he calmly answered.
“But. From one chef to another… Could I get a list of the spices you used?”, the Guardian asked, in hopes of getting new variants of spices to try out. The chef hummed, but after a little while, he said.
“Well okay then. Speaking of spices… I need a favor in exchange for the spice list. You see, I’ve ordered these spices from a connection of mine in Stratford, which lies in Avon. As you can see, we’re a bit busy here, could I have you pick it up for me?” the chef asked. Sayinh had already set his mind on doing whatever needed to get that list of spices. - A delivery job? Easily done, I’ll be back in a week, tops. If I hurry, I could make it in 5 days, I think -, he thought, as he answered with a nod.
“Well sure, of course you can. Do you have a pen?” the Guardian asked.
“Uhm, sure..” the chef replied, handing him the inkfilled container, designed to write on paper. Sayinh thanked, as he took the pen and started to write on his arm. ‘S’, ‘P’, ‘I’, ‘C’, ‘E’, ‘S’, he wrote at his wrist.
“Here, now I’ll remember it. I’ll be going then, I’ll see you when I get back then” he said, as he rose from the bench once again.
“You know where to find me, I’ll see you when you get back then!”, the chef smilingly said, as he turned back towards the stand from which he came.
The kids had moved one to somewhere else, and Sayinh started to walk further into the city. - Well, at least I have something to do now. And I, who thought of going to the quest board ones again, for old times’ sake -, he thought, as a breeze went past his head. The streets were busy at this time of day, having people running in and out of the stores with bags and different kinds of groceries. Anything from food to handy wares for their homes. Sayinh, wondering around the main street, looking at the people rushing their days away. Becoming thoughtless and working like a machine… that wasn’t something he wanted to become a part of. He took a deep breath, inhaling all the different scents.
After a couple of minutes, being lost in thought, he found himself standing in a flower shop. - Wha.. must have been the lovely smell, that brought me here. -, he thought, looking at the various types of flowers. Roses, Orchids, Lavenders, and many more. Since he already stood there, he might as well buy some.
“Hello?”, Sayinh asked, looking around for someone to service him.
“Well hello there, what can I do for you?”, a lady came out from the back room. She wasn’t very tall, actually a bit smaller than himself. She was wide around her hips, and had blackish hair put in a braided ponytail.
“Uhm, I want to buy a bouquet, can you handle that?”, he asked, sending a reassuring smile towards the lady.
“Sure, what do you want?”, she answered, as she put on a pair of gloves.
“Uhm… 3 Rainbow Roses, surrounded by the Blue Roses thanks.”, he said whilst pointing at the different varies of Roses.
“Mhm, mhm. That’ll be… 17 gold”, she smilingly said. The Guardian payed, took the bouquet and said,
“Have a nice day”, before leaving the store.
A drop of water fell from a leaf, located on an untouchable spot in the tree’s massive crown, and hit Sayinh at the top of his neck. The impact caused a shiver through Sayinh’s entire body.
