Venturing out into the wilderness had many risks, including the risk of dying. He knew, from other’s deaths, that death meant that he would be able to come back to life in the cathedral, but it also meant reducing the amount of EXP he would gain. It was necessary to stay alive, and so he would return to town when it was necessary in order to heal, eat, and rest. While he knew that it was difficult to die in the first fields of the game, he knew it was possible if one was not careful. Kumori stepped out of the archway that separated the wild lands and the city and proceeded to the fields that would have the weakest monsters. As he made it to the beginner fields, he stopped to check his surroundings and check the enemies he would be facing. From his initial scan, it was evident that he’d be facing against rabbits and vermin of various kinds, all ranging from first to third level. Kumori removed his dagger from his sheathe, attached his lower back. “So it begins… my training…” Kumori took advantage of the non-aggravation that was allowed to lower level players and lower level. He first attempted to use the command menu in order to execute his skill, however he realized how ridiculous and difficult it was to do so. He would do so, executing the angular strike of his skill repertoire. Kumori’s body began to run, attempting to gain the necessary momentum to jump up and spin. As he began to approach the ground, his weapon slashed at the rabbit that was in front of him, taking most of the HP of the monster. He followed up with a stab, as his back was facing the rabbit, thrusting his sword backwards, removing the rest of its HP. As if habit from playing a samurai before, Kumori flicked his sword downward and placed it back into his scabbard. “Hmm… this will prove a bit more problematic. With no number keys to execute skills and without being able to set shortcuts, there has to be an easier way to execute these skill.” Kumori thought for a few minutes and came up with an idea. He had almost forgotten that this world had become ‘the real world’ and so he needed to treat his skills the same. He needed to perform these skills as if they were his own. Kumori looked for his next target, which would be the kin of the rabbit he had just slaughtered. Kumori would, instead of attempting to execute the skill using the command menu, would attempt to manually perform the skill. Kumori ran towards the next target, jumping up and spinning right after the jump, attempting to use the momentum that was allotted to him. It seemed the body began to take control itself in order for him to be able to execute the strike. With the activation of the skill, manually, he was able to see his MP reduce down because of the use of the skill. It seemed that his ability to manually execute the skills were key. As an assassin, it required much more finesse than many of the other classes, however he was sure that his athletic ability would put him in a position that was used to doing such finesse-required skills. It seemed that with the introduction of skilling in this world was different from what he remembered of the game when he played, he realized that it was important to choose skills which would be able to pair well together. The Deadly Dance skill would pair well with many other different skills he knew of, of the assassin class. While before, skilling simply chose the type of attacks that did the most damage within the most amount of time, the fluidity of doing combos was much more pivotal in terms of fighting in this world. It was no longer a question of what was strongest, but what flowed best to create the strongest combos within the shortest amount of time. One could not use a close attack skill into Deadly Dance and vice versa. Kumori knew that he would need to decipher each skill and figure out the best way to combo them. It was one of the advantages of having to start over. Kumori was a clean slate, and now he would be allowed to choose skills that flowed well together, allowing him to execute melee attacks in rapid succession. He was ready to brave this new world. What was this all about, this world? Was it about a vie for power? Did it matter who was the strongest? To Kumori, it was making the most of the life that he had to live. With the ever growing possibility of insanity, the only thing that would keep him sane was his humanity, and in order to remain human, he would help those who needed it. He would begin to treat the People of the Land like actual people. There was a quote that Kumori held close, and that was “with great power comes great responsibility,” and while not many would agree with him, treating the People of the Land who needed his power, he would serve them because he had the power to do so. Kumori stood up from his resting place and decided it was time to start once more. He had to train and he had to become strong. Kumori removed his dagger from his sheathe and began decided to take on a group of the level 1 rabbits. Using his “Silent Move”, he moved slowly towards a group of rabbits, making sure not to alert the rabbits that he was there. This fight would test his efficiency and ability to evade and attack at the same time. It would also test his ability to track the movements of multiple enemies while he fought. He approached a group of five rabbits. While they did not show aggression to him, they soon would. Kumori jumped and spun his body. Light began to glow around him to prompt the usage of a skill. Without much effort, he slaughtered the first of the rabbits. Unfortunately, he would have to wait for the cool down before he could use it again. Kumori jumped backwards, using the agility of the assassin class to keep himself mobile. Rabbit two had lashed towards him, Kumori deftly evading it, moving closer to the group of rabbits. Rabbit 3, 4, and 5 attacked him. He knew he couldn’t evade them all, so taking a few hits was to be expected. He slashed at Rabbit 3, barring it from hitting him, spinning around and brining the dagger up to guard against rabbit 4, however rabbit 5 was given freedom to hit him. The rabbit jumped and struck him. Kumori was forced to recoil, taking the physical hit as if it were real. Based on his HP, it felt real, surprisingly. Kumori struck at Rabbit 2, once again, and then swinging his next attack towards Rabbit 3, trying to evade the attacks of Rabbit 4 and 5. They both attacked at the same time, making it a bit easier to dodge in one fluid motion. Kumori ducked and blocked, barring any more damage that was dealt to him. Kumori’s skill had come off of cool down, which allowed him to jump and spin, executing his Deadly Dance. He destroyed Rabbit 4, in order to maximize his damage, and then striking Rabbit 3 with a normal strike. This left Rabbit 5 in play. With only one enemy remaining, dodging and killing was easy. He blocked the Rabbit, and then countering with two strikes in quick succession to finish his hunt.

What was Kumori to do now? He had tested the battle system thoroughly, knowing that his skilling was no in part, a result of his thoughts and his movements. His speed, however, was dictated by his character stats. He could not move or attack as fast as his body wanted to; however this also meant that his body could eventually move faster than he would be allowed to in the real world. What he could do and couldn’t do were limited to what his level allowed, which made him wonder what it is that was truly keeping track of their levels? There had to be an innate system, knowing when to level his main-class up as well as his sub-classes. What it was, he could only explain as the overarching possibility of a computer system. Servers that had somehow become real and had sucked all that were playing into this hell, however eternal or ethereal it was. It seemed that this perplexing idea of going into this virtual world was something that would happen in Digimon. The only thing he was missing was monster companion, namely Patamon, but that was beside the point. What he wanted to draw up was the possibility that this world, that had once been code and data, had become real. The difference from Digimon was that it could be hacked and changed as well as manipulated, however he has found no proof of such possibility to this world. Albeit it was a world that was centralized in the 1600s, he couldn’t help but wonder that even if they (being the Adventurers) developed something similar to a computer, that there was no way to connect to the ‘encompassing’ mainframe. There were no sockets, unlike Digimon where anything you saw, Iggy probably plugged his laptop into and did something to it. But in the case that this was like Digimon and that all the Adventurers were the so-called Digi-destined, how would they be able to get out? There had to be gates. Kumori then remembered what it was that they were all shut down from… it was the teleportation gates. Were they keys to getting out of this world? Was that why they were turned off or destroyed, or whatever happened to them? It was a theory at best, but would they be able to return those gates into working order? Kumori could only wonder. What if they could reproduce these gates again? There was too much in question, too much that could lead to an answer back home. Kumori could only assume that if they could find a way out of this world, no one would ever return. His theory rested there, that it’d probably be impossible to reactivate the gates by themselves, rather they would have to wait until the ones who trapped them here turned them on instead. It seemed that attempting to find a way out was pointless, and now travel was limited to what they could make and what they could invent. Crafting was drastically different from when they played the game. Where there were limits as a crafter once before, one could only craft within the system’s limitations. Without the limitations of crafting, it was evident that they could create anything that the materials allowed. This didn’t mean that repairing the gates was impossible, however it might be because of external forces. However, this led to the next question as to ‘why’ they were here. Why were they forced to come here as real people in a game world? In Digimon, the Digi-Destined were brought into the Digi-World in order to save the interwebz as well as the real world. If this wasn’t just some supernatural phenomenon, and someone was controlling their stay here, who was it? Too many things have shut down to make this simply a supernatural phenomenon. The non-fighting in towns was definitely unnatural, and so there still had to be some kind of system in play, and so there had to be someone regulating or keeping things in check. Of course it was only an assumption, it was a plausible one, but only an assumption. With so many possibilities, and his comparing it to the world to Digimon was possibly a far stretch, he still couldn’t help but feel that there was someone controlling the world. There had to be a logical explanation to all that was happening, but even then, hoping for that was futile. These were all just theories, but regardless, he would have to continue moving on. With a quick and final step towards the exit, he encountered his last mob before he decided to go back home. His time of experimentation went a bit longer than he expected, however the things he had learned were more than useful. His eyes were set on the prize of becoming stronger, and so he took a quick step towards the mob. Dashing in, with his dagger in hand, he began spinning around, hitting the kobold with as much force as he could. With the connection of the hit, it was all too satisfying to notice the HP bar of his opponent begin to decrease, however he was no longer fighting mere bunnies that had only a single attack that was all too easy to predict. The Kobold was a different kind of attacker. He had a sword and a shield, which made things much more interesting and difficult. While Ryuu was still close to the Kobold, it began to charge towards him, bashing his shield into Ryuu’s body. His arm and dagger were up, mitigating some of the damage, but he still took a decent hit. Ready to push off again, Ryuu attempted to move to make an attack again, but to no avail, he couldn’t. His legs were shaking, probably because this wasn’t a fight against rabbits, this was a fight against something that could fight back proficiently. Move… move move move! he thought to himself, finally regaining his composure right before the Kobold was about to strike again, but this time with his sword. His movement was a bit late, because of a bit of unforeseen technical difficulties, causing him to take a hit from the sword. Ryuu was ready now, ready to fight this being that was much smarter than the foes he was used to fighting. Dashing straight towards the Kobold, he was going straight for the shield, however before he got there, he switched directions, going beside the Kobold and then striking at its back with a well planted back stab. Ryuu turned back around and thrusted the sword into the Kobold once more, making sure to do as much as he could at the moment. The Kobold finally managed to turn around and attempted to bash his shield into Ryuu, but Ryuu was faster than that. He backed away from the Kobold, treating this like a normal fight he had fought as a kid. Versed in the ways of fighting hand to hand, fighting with a dagger wasn’t too much different. His Deadly Strike had just come off cooldown again, and it seemed that Ryuu was ready to land his finishing blow. Ryuu ran forward, feigning a strike right at the Kobold, however when the Kobold went to block, Ryuu jumped on top of the shield and used the skill in the air, attempting to hack off the Kobold’s head off. As soon as Ryuu landed, he sheathed his dagger and looked down towards the back and side to make sure that his opponent had fallen. With the sound of a small explosion and bright bubbles began to rise towards the sky, Ryuu smiled; his attack was a success. Grabbing the loot that had dropped from the Kobold, Ryuu finally went back towards town and decided to recap on the day’s training. There were several things he had realized while training. It was that with the advent of the Catastrophe, this body now acted like his own. It did not feel like it was being controlled by another being, rather it was controlled by his own will. As an extension of his body, Ryuu saw it fit to be used as an Assassin’s body. His build was much like this, so controlling it required little to no effort. The biggest thing that he feared was death. When he was playing the game, resurrections resulted after the death of a character. Usually they would lose a preset amount of EXP, however now that it was merged, he did not know what the repercussions were, and he was not one willing to find out. While he was stronger than before, he did not want to needlessly sacrifice himself. He was a cautious and practical man, so he was not ready, just yet, to give up on this life. As he finally returned home, he looked over towards the place where he was staying. It was a hotel, and it was rather cheap since he was in Beginner Town. With the necessary arrangements made to complete his level up, Ryuu opened his door to his hotel room. Dark had approached a while back , and it was about time to sleep. He sighed and undressed into simply his boxers. He pulled the covers over his head and began to spend his first night asleep in this new world. He hoped he would still be able to dream but in due time, he’d find out. OOC NOTES: 818words
