After her nth encounter with in-game food, the samurai finally decided that enough was enough. It was time to put her chef class skills to the test. Still unsure of her capability to gather ingredients from ‘live’ game, Caerbannog resolved to settle for vegetarian meals. With a hefty amount of determination, and perhaps a sprinkle of luck, she was able to find what she needed from the underbrush right outside Londenium. Clear water from a brook, various kinds of mushrooms, what seemed to be wild carrots, and an herb that undoubtedly smelled like thyme; with these in hand, she set to work.
Beside a campfire near the main road, Kyuu cleaned out a battered old iron helmet. Flipped over, it made for a good pot but not much else. She filled it with water and put it over the roaring fire which she proudly made by herself. Instead of a ladle, the girl had naught but a cleaned-up branch for stirring her makeshift pot. It made for a good wooden spoon, or something of that sort. Perhaps she should invest in proper utensils. Maybe a knife or two, or a proper pot first?
Anyway, the chef took out the mushrooms that she found and laid them out over a sun-warmed stone. Now, gathering mushrooms was not incredibly difficult if one had some common sense, but identifying the poisonous ones apart from the non-poisonous ones was a whole other matter to consider. First off, poisonous mushrooms tend to be colorful so as to attract victims. Caerbannog stared at the bright red ones piled up high to her left side, and wondered what spirit of stupidity had taken hold of her when she was gathering them. Quickly, she kicked that pile into some dark area between the trees so as to hide her obvious mistake.

Three piles of mushrooms which seemed decidedly edible remained upon the sun-warmed stone. Kyuu looked closely at the mushrooms in the middle. She thought that it moved... and when she lowered her head towards the items, she noticed a faint smell coming from those ingredients. The sun was high above her, and the stone seemed to be cooking the mushrooms with its heat. At that, she realized that the mushrooms in the middle were emitting a hallucinogenic smoke. That was bad, right?
Quickly, Caerbannog covered her nose and mouth, and then, much like what she did with the first group of bad ‘shrooms, she kicked the hallucinogenic ones into the forest. Two down, two to go... luckily for the samurai, a very young pittered boar – perhaps just slightly younger than young pittered boars- wandered close to the road. Kyuu tossed one of each remaining pile of mushrooms at the creature. Curiosity, or hunger, got the best of it; the boar sniffed and ate the dark brown mushroom. It was still hungry, and so the creature ate the other mushroom, smaller and paler than the first one. When the boar ran away shrieking, Kyuu knew to toss the smaller mushrooms into the forest.
The chef washed the edible mushrooms and tossed them into the boiling water. She’d have to leave it in there for a while until the mushrooms soaked up the clear liquid. While she was watching the make-shift pot, Caerbannog used her main weapon to slice up the wild carrots, albeit with much difficulty. She really needed a proper tool... and soon. Regardless, the girl quickly finished preparing the carrots and just in time too, for the boiling water began to smell of mushrooms. She did not feel light-headed or ill from inhaling the vapor, thus the soup seemed truly edible.

Caerbannog tossed the carrots into the pot of boiling water and mushrooms. She stirred it carefully with her make-shift wooden spoon, and then she watched the dish as it boiled. When the fire began to burn too brightly, the chef removed some of the redhot wood; soon, water in the pot began to simmer down. When the carrots’ color began to change, Kyuu put crushed thyme leaves into the water. All that was left was to wait it out.
Soon the fragrance of thyme wafted through the air, mixed with the sweetness of carrots and the earthy smell of mushrooms. The clear water was all but a base where the fragrance and flavors could drown themselves in. Caerbannog put loose soil over the fire to make it die down slowly, instead of throwing water in it which might result in a horrid abundance of smoke which could overcome the scent of her dish. After all seemed to be in order, Kyuu peered into the make-shift pot. Not much to her surprised, it turned out splendidly... though perhaps a bit strange-looking what with the floating mushroom heads that looked like black splotches on the soup. She really should get a proper knife and cut all the ingredients up next time.
As for the taste, it was just as flavorful as it was aromatic. After putting up with the bland in-game food for a while, the girl finally had a meal that was fairly close to what she’d be able to make in the real world. A bit strange-looking too, much like how she’d cook it up at home. But for the moment, she should get a workable spoon and not the branch which she insisted on using as a cooking utensil; perhaps her Mushroom and Carrot soup would taste even better then.
