[attr="class","quest"] Sarum Expedition Crafting MissionWe need crafters to work on various tasks relating to equipment and item maintenance. Frontliners need potions and their weapons, armor, accessories repaired. The camp will require maintenance of machinery and wooden structuring. Chefs and brewers are needed to keep everyone's morale up. Your contribution toward this task will be rewarded adequately. NPC: Rose List of Objectives:- Craft useful medicine or potions: 0/3 - Craft tasty food or meals: 0/3 - Raise adventurer morale: 0/1 Participants:[Pharmacist] Capsule Lv30 [Chef] @dindeen Lv11 Subclass: Chef | Equipped: Pitch-black Yukata | Tools: Cooking Utensils - :: -Skill: Iron Stomach (Passive) The blue-eyed wolf-hair longed for a pastime, a hobby, anything that would keep her mind off of the fact that she was indefinitely stuck in a game. The Sarum Expedition was a good distraction however she wanted something that was a little less on grind and more on just doing something to keep her preoccupied. A crafting request was just what she needed. The camp needed chefs, pharmacists and brewers to create supplies which were much needed in the frontlines. Morale was hitting an all-time low since the adventurers had to fill their empty stomachs with crappy food and drinks. Lander-made medicine and potions were not as effective as adventurer-made ones, and the buyers were not so pleased with the lack of quality which they purchased with a high price.
“ Chef, yes, “ Caerbannog pointed at her face when she saw the lander who put up the request.
A middle-aged woman by the looks of it, the lander Rose put Caerbannog in a party for the request so that she could keep track of the girl’s progress. They waited for another adventurer who would take up the request and would invite that person in the party too. Since the fulfillment of objectives would be shared between party members, a crafting quest would be done faster together than if the adventurers did the quests alone. While they waited, the samurai stood beside the brown-haired lander woman who was much taller than her and bigger too.
Caerbannog hid away her armor and nagamaki which left only her black boots, shorts and yukata on her body. Across her torso there was her Critter Satchel which looked like a deformed rabbit of sorts, and within it, she stored her cooking utensils. Rose said that crafting materials would be provided for them by the landers so the samurai was relieved that she would not have to take anything consumable from her own inventory. The samurai called out Hrairoo and put the rabbit on her head. If anything, the creature could serve as a tester for the freshness of any vegetable or fruit that the chef would have to use.

She felt "sparkly" as in brand spanking new. In just a few short days, Capsule had gone from scrub to somewhat respectable Adventurer. She had new (standard) armor, some accessories, a new grimoire, and the giant squid plushie she had requested a while ago. These were all items she had acquired while taking a break from the whole Sarum expedition business, and now felt confident enough to deal with even Kass if necessary.
The redhead practically skipped back to the camp site. Fiver was with her, as always, and Duke had been given greater freedom over the weeks since his wing healed, so the owl would stay behind in their apartment. He had gotten into the habit of flying off for days at a time, but always returned eventually. Capsule suspected that he would soon leave altogether and return to the wild to his family, or simply eke out a living on his own. The idea of him leaving her was a little saddening, but she had no means of binding him to her; he was just a regular animal, after all. There was a quote relevant to this: "If you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, its yours forever. If it doesn’t, then it was never meant to be." It was fine if it wasn't meant to be; at least she could treasure the good times they had together. 'Oh, bother.' Now she felt like Winnie the Pooh, but with Eeyore syndrome.
Her gait slowed a bit, during which she drew the ends of her cloak, Evanescence, around herself in comfort. Fiver stopped to turn his head and stare at the woman in confusion. She had moments like these every now and then, though they usually passed after a few minutes. This one lasted for two, and the ends of the cloak were dropped back to hang around her body as she picked up her pace. Curling into the fetal position was not a viable option right now - not unless she wished to stain her new armor and cloak with mud and grass, that is. Her hands drew up to her shoulders, where the Giant Squid Plush sat, and seized the two long tentacles in a vice-like grip. She tied the ends of the tentacles together so that the plush would stay unaided to her shoulders, and lowered one hand to rest against the hilt of her kukri. 'Safety first.' She was no master of the blade, but Cap had practiced with the dagger enough to become familiar with it, and would not be so easily disarmed if a fight showed itself.
No monsters, human or otherwise, molested her on her way to the Sarum expedition site. One curious Brier Weasel did stray a little too close, however, and was scared off by a simple blast from her Inversion skill. Unnecessary cruelty was definitely not her style.
The NPCs were in full swing as usual, most of them making quite a show in their attempts to gather individuals for the various missions. Perhaps it was her newly attained gear, but there seemed to be more vies for her attention this time around, and it would make good sense. Her level was a little high, but that alone did not make her appealing when her old gear was greatly outclassed. Now that she looked like she could stand a few blows, Capsule was harassed just as much as other well fitted players. She politely refused the requests for combat and scouting quests, though, having done those once already. She was more interested in doing crafting missions, which were likely to be overlooked by people who wanted to fight and or explore. 'Hopefully I don't get stuck with Kass or her crew,' she thought as she followed the lander woman, Rose, she had agreed to help.
Capsule was glad and relieved to see that she was partied up with Caerbannog, a now level fifty Samurai she had fought alongside during a combat mission. She was also glad to see that Care Bear Care was doing well, and lifted a hand to greet the Samurai, who was dressed casually for this mission. 'Her armor did look a little uncomfortable.' As someone who was better suited for cloth armor, Capsule could get away with making armor that looked like everyday clothing, albeit a bit tight. She would still need to break this new gear in, but at least she could work comfortably in it. It wouldn't kill to get a set of vanity clothing crafted, though.
The redheaded Enchanter checked the list of the objectives for the quest once more, and pulled out her mortar and pestle from the magic bag she kept pinned to her waist. The balanced the items in one hand while she checked for some empty vials, before remembering that supplies were to be provided for them by the landers. "Hm. I think we're all set, then…?" She looked over to Caer for confirmation, not wanting to seem pushy or anything. Unless there was another person joining them, Caerbannog was the Chef the objectives hinted at. The thought was enough to make her stomach rumble.

There were many interesting sights, sounds and scents all over the expedition camp and the rabbit could not choose just one. It tried to follow every adventurer that passed by, every whiff of newly cooked lander meals and each and every unfamiliar voice. Soon the poor little brown creature was confused and it resolved to just focus on the samurai once again. Caerbannog looked up at Roo after the rabbit let out a tired sigh and she reached out to gently poke its little nose.
When the lander Rose returned with another adventurer, the samurai stood up straight and patted down her clothes and satchel just for good measure. First impressions were important after all. And so when she looked up, Caerbannog was relieved that the other adventurer who joined the party was none other than the enchanter Capsule. The samurai greeted her fellow adventurer with an enthusiastic wave accompanied by a wide smile; perhaps too enthusiastic a wave, and too wide a smile. She would have seemed a little odd and out of character, but Caerbannog just was genuinely relieved that she was paired up by someone who was familiar to her.
Most of the time, the samurai would be fearful of taller people; Capsule certainly was tall. However, the tentacles on her shoulders served to offset her height. Caerbannog, wide-eyed, stepped a little to her left side just to get a good look at the body which was connected to the tentacles. To her surprise and relief, it was a toy or plushie. A giant squid plushie, to be precise. Anyone who walked around with that around on their person could not possibly be a scary adventurer. To the samurai, it was even more of a reason to feel relieved that she was in a party with the enchanter.
Caerbannog took one more look at the quest objectives. It required a pharmacist for the creation of medicine and potion therefore it was not irregular to deduce that Capsule was such a crafter. The samurai looked at the enchanter when she spoke up. That squid. Caerbannog was only momentarily distracted; she averted her eyes from the squid’s, looked at the adventurer and nodded. She double-checked her own cooking utensils and made sure that her rabbit, who seemed to think itself a hat, would not fall out of place.
Once both adventurers were ready, Rose led the two into a nearby tent. It was larger than the other tents and soon it was apparent that the space was some sort of mess hall. It was less of a hall and more like a mess though. The landers dashed around to clean up after the adventurers who came and went as they pleased. Any adventurer who was on a Sarum quest and had enough coin could spend their time in that place. The food seemed pretty horrible though based on the patrons’ unenthusiastic reactions. On one side there were some people who merely rested up and purchased some potions, and they too seemed unimpressed by the effects of the items which they bought.
“ Here... “ the lander Rose led the two to a corner of the tent.
On some spacious tables which were not occupied by other adventurers, landers were hard at work to cook meals and to create medicine. They weren’t very good at it, but still they tried their best for the new frontier needed such things. Materials and ingredients were neatly arranged in labeled crates, jars and bottles. On a low shelf, there were empty vials for potions and plates and bowls for food items. The landers momentarily stopped what they were doing, curious as to the presence of the two adventurers.
“ I put up a crafting quest, these two will be helping out, “ Rose explained to the landers and then she turned to Capsule and Caerbannog, “ I’ll leave this to you then. Once you’re done, you can find me right outside. “
When Rose walked away, Caerbannog psyched herself up by gently tapping her own cheeks with her hands. Hrairoo looked down at its tamer, curious but not too worried. The samurai then put her hands down and nodded at Capsule. Since they would be doing different things and crafting different items, they could fill separate spots around the spacious table.
“ Let’s do this! “ the blue-eyed samurai said to the enchanter.
After that simple statement, Caerbannog then turned to one of the crates which contained fresh vegetables. She set Roo to work by having it check each and every vegetable item within reach. The chef would simply take one of the ingredients and put it up over her head so that the rabbit could reach it. If Hrairoo tried to bite into the vegetable, that meant that it was fresh enough so Caerbannog would put it in a smaller crate which she would fill with ingredients for her crafting. If Roo ignored the vegetable or sneezed away from it, the chef would put it on a separate crate which the landers could check later on. They would never serve meals made from spoiled ingredients, right?

She had anticipated something like this, ever since she made the decision to request the plush. It was long, pink, and wrapped around her shoulders, outside of her cloak for the rest of the world to see. How could anyone miss it? The interest didn't last long, though. The Lander, Rose, was ready to show them to their station. Capsule dipped her head and smiled at the little brown rabbit on Caer's head. 'That's an interesting spot to rest on.' Fiver, her rabbit, was lucky to ride in her arms. She would never allow him up on her head and shoulders. The rabbit was too prone to kicking, scratching and biting when danger was around.
Fiver growled softly at her ankles as they were led away from the meeting spot and into a large tent, filled with Adventurers and Landers alike. The Landers were busy selling their wares to the Adventurers that dared to shop there, for what Cap could only assume were cheaper potions and meals made in poorer quality. The customers were obviously displeased with the quality of their goods. As far as Capsule was concerned, one should not rely upon a Lander to do an Adventurer's job, especially since the former was limited in leveling and therefore crafting. She wasn't sure if they could even make legit potions and food, though they did seem capable of making low leveled gear, like her old Windsor Antiqua Staff.
'That's...kind of cute.' This thought was aimed at Caerbannog, who was tapping her cheeks with her hands. Capsule gave a soft and brief laugh of amusement, before covering her mouth to hide it. The gleeful smile remained on her lips as she gave her partner a thumbs up in response. "Viel Glück; Viel Spaß!" 1
While Caer and her rabbit inspected the quality of the vegetables they were to work with, Capsule and Fiver moved over to where the herbs and minor chemicals were stored. Capsule's body flushed with a strong burst of déjà vu as she examined the materials. She had been sent off to collect herbs her first time helping out at the Sarum camp, when she and another group of Pharmacists were called in to help out. She had returned empty handed a while later, after being bullied by her partner at the time - Kass - to the point of running off. If it hadn't been for Saber… Capsule closed her eyes and exhaled. If Kass started anything right now, she would be in for a rude surprise. The Enchanter wasn't as weak as she was back then; she could hold her own if necessary.
She gave her head a light shake and returned to the task at hand. The provided herbs were simple and common ones, and were largely geared towards healing items. That made perfect sense; the golems, as far as she knew, could not spout flames and were likely unaffected by sleeping potions. The Potion of Nighteye was not amongst the discounted potions, however. It would be very useful for scouting parties that were forced to travel at night or stumbled upon a cave. 'So health, night vision and poison, I guess.' She was hesitant to focus on only these crafts, despite the rationale she had worked out; there were new monsters in Sarum, ones whose weaknesses and strengths were unknown to her. Opting out of some potions could be bothersome for the Adventurers she was crafting for. '...I think I will take that risk.'
Cradling her mortar and pestle in the crook of one arm, Capsule grabbed a small crate of materials and brought it over to her side of the table. Two more trips were made, these being to grab a small pot and a burner to set it on. Fiver threw himself at her feet as she sat down and began scattering herbs in front of her, briefly checking them for quality and ripeness. Once she was satisfied that she had some proper ingredients, Capsule unsheathed her kukri and began the simple process of cutting the herbs into fine strips. Medicinal Tablets may have been more convenient to take into battle, but they were also a pain in the ass to make.

Caerbannog picked one last lettuce, or Elder Tale’s version of a lettuce, and held it up for Hrairoo to inspect. The frenmic rabbit sniffed at the vegetable and tried to reach it with his mouth and paws. The chef quickly put it in her crate though and out of the rabbit’s reach. She then looked over to Capsule who had gathered her herbs and other materials; the samurai did note the enchanter’s well-wishes which were spoken in Deutsche. Such an angry sounding language, but the words were kind and gentle. She’d heard it from her father and her relatives, but due to their situation at home for the first half of her life, the girl had been raised speaking only English. Even her Japanese was subpar and only enough for greetings and short conversations.
Those thoughts aside, Caerbannog picked up her crate of ingredients with much difficulty. Perhaps she had too many items in her crate... it was too late to put them back though. The landers already looked at the chef and murmured amongst themselves. They probably were relieved that she would cook all those things by herself, and the girl would not let them down. With the heavy crate in her hands, Caerbannog walked over to a table not too far from where Capsule began her work. All the samurai knew was that pharmacists worked with herbs and created medicine. She was unsure of their process so the chef thought it best to stay a safe distance away so that things would not get mixed up.
The chef pulled a chair to her side and put Hrairoo down on it. It would be bad for her and for the consumers if rabbit hair somehow was mixed into the meals. The creature wanted to check out what she was doing, but soon it was content with just munching on a carrot which Caerbannog set down in front of the rabbit. Before the girl started her work, she looked over to Capsule and the enchanter’s pet. Unlike that time during her first Sarum expedition, Hrairoo did not seem annoyed by the presence of the enchanter’s pet, so she figured that it was only the owl which made Roo act that way before. Capsule’s feathered friend was nowhere in sight so far; the chef would hide away her rabbit if it appeared, just to avoid trouble.
As for the ingredients in front of her, Caerbannog grouped them into two: the leafy ones went to her left side while the fleshy ones went to her right. She would first clean and cut up the vegetables after which she’d look for meat items. Her goal was to cook up meals that would make the adventurers feel refreshed after a long day in the new frontier. The chef took out her cooking utensils which would be immediately used such as bowls, plates, a chopping board and some knives. She chopped some onions and garlic and set them aside in their own little plates. Next, she sliced some ginger, an ingredient that could keep the soup warm even after the stock had cooled down. Lastly, Caerbannog sliced some of the strongest-smelling celery that she ever worked with. Hrairoo sniffed at the air when it noticed the celery, so its tamer gave the rabbit a small leaf to chew on.
With that done, Caerbannog hopped over to one of the stoves. A lander kindly prepared it for the chef and the girl expressed her gratitude with a polite bow and a word of thanks. She then put an iron pot with a bit of cooking oil inside it on the fire while the chef looked around for meat ingredients. One of the landers offered some pork; or at least, it looked like pork. They said that it came from boars so yeah, it was pork, right? Caerbannog also asked for boar liver which the landers thought odd, but hey, she was a chef. The girl then had pork and liver to work with for the first dish that she planned; she cleaned those up, cut them into small cubes and put them in the pot with hot cooking oil. A bit of salt and lots of ground black pepper were then added into the mix along with the chopped onions and garlic. Caerbannog sautéed the meat and liver until it was almost completely cooked, and the delicious smell of her dish wafted in the air.
The landers watched the chef as she sautéed her dish. It might have seemed odd to them that she would do such a thing in an iron pot instead of a pan, but there was a point to it, really. Caerbannog added the ginger slices and tossed the ingredients around a little. She then took a glass and filled it with water which was promptly poured into the iron pot. The sautéed food items sizzled at first until the water covered the entire bottom of the container. The chef added two glasses of water afterwards, and then she covered the iron pot. She sat down on a chair beside Hrairoo’s while she waited for the soup to boil. It did not take long for the water inside the pot to reach its boiling point for the container was already red hot. Caerbannog stood up and carefully took the lid off; the strong smell of liver and ginger burst forth from the iron pot which made the landers even more curious of the dish. The chef put out the fire after she determined that the meat and liver were thoroughly cooked. To finish off her dish, Caerbannog tossed the sliced celery in and then she covered the pot again.
“ Should be done in five minutes, “ she said as she allowed the heat of the soup to cook the celery while mostly retaining its bright green color.

She scowled and stopped in the middle of cutting one, which to her surprise and distaste was half rotting. "Ugh." She tossed the bad herb to the side, in what would quickly become known as the "bad" section. It was a good thing she caught that mistake ahead of time; using bad materials would have the opposite effect of what she wanted. After catching that one bad root, Capsule took a moment to go through her herbs again, tossing the bad ones into a slowly forming pile. Fiver, who had hopped up onto a chair to better watch her as she worked, took one sniff at the pile and turned his head away in disgust. Rabbits were apparently great at judging the freshness of vegetation.
There was a soft sound of steel against wood as the Pharmacist firmly planted the edge of her kukri on the table top and dragged it to the side, collecting the chopped herbs. She used her free hand to cup the ingredients from the other side, and like this formed a thick row. A small nick was left in the wood when she lifted her knife, which was brought down a moment later into the bottom most end of the row. The chopped herbs on that end were cut even smaller, as were the herbs behind it as she slowly made her way up. The end result was something that resembled a large pile of dust to the far and foggy eye, but in reality was a cluster of finely cut herbs.
The soft screech of steel upon wood returned, in a similar manner as before. This time, instead of forming them up to cut, Capsule collected the chopped herbs and deposited them into the bowl of her mortar. Now came the "fun" part - the crushing and grounding of the many little herbs. It was not often that she was given the luxury of working at a table, so rather than propping the mortar and pestle in her lap, Capsule held it steady on the tabletop. This somehow felt a lot more satisfying, and there was even a pleasing crunching noise being produced. It also seemed to make her work go by along that much faster, though she could have been imagining things.
She looked up briefly from her grinding to check on Caer's status, and saw that the girl was just finishing up some slicing and dicing of her own. The ingredients she used were more suited for cooking and eating in meals, and even from where she was sitting, Capsule could clearly smell them. Her own ingredients lacked such strength in scent, especially once they were grounded up like this. That would be a whole different story once they were ready to boil, though.
Once the ingredients in her mortar were thoroughly grinded into dust, Capsule set the mortar and pestle aside to wrestle with the small pot and the burner. She probably could have used the stove if she wanted to, but it felt weird to be making potions on the stove, and right next to someone who making an actual dish. She set the pot onto the burner and flicked it on, allowing it to warm up while she went to fetch a bit of water.
The pot was lightly steaming by the time she returned, and increased for a few seconds when she poured in two tablespoons worth. Next, she dumped in the powder, and followed that by pouring in a beaker of impure solvent. All that was left was for the contents to boil, which could take a few minutes. Capsule decided to leave it be and work on another potion in the meantime. Caer was doing well and was sure to complete her first meal before Capsule, though - a dish the Enchanter was curious to observe being made, but had her own craft to focus on. Fiver, that devious little scamp, scurried off to inspect the Samurai's process. Cap poked and prodded at her own concoction, which was slowly starting to bubble and emit something less than pleasant.

Her crafting class was similar to the enchanter’s in some way and that led her to wonder if they could work together on a whole new recipe. Something that both chefs and pharmacists could create; something that would blur the line without erasing it completely. As far as she could tell, both food items and potions could regenerate HP. She had not seen any mana potions yet which was an oddity, seeing as most MMORPGs had mana potions instead of MP-restoring sweets. But that thought was reserved for another time since her five minutes was up.
The samurai hopped over to the iron pot and slowly removed the cover so that the steam would not rush out too quickly. The whitish vapor escaped little by little and brought it with the scent of ginger and celery. As the girl hoped, the leaves which she put in were still greenish as opposed to a horrible yellowish color that overcooking would result to. Some of the landers were soon distracted from their work when Caerbannog picked two very small bowls, just slightly larger than a cup, and put some of the pork and liver soup in it using a wooden ladle. The first bowl she tasted herself; the meat was well done as it should be while the liver was thoroughly cooked as well. Ginger offset the strange flavor that pork usually left in soups while onion and garlic added to the flavor of the stock. The fragrance of celery was the most noticeable feature of the dish though the amount which was used in the soup was not enough to leave a bitter taste. Perhaps a bit peculiar compared to other chefs, Caerbannog, both in the real world and in Elder Tale, assessed the taste and amount of cooking that her dish needed by its smell. She was able to tell if the herbs, vegetables, meat and other ingredients were already cooked by their scent which changed as time progressed while it was being cooked. The taste test at the end was just to ensure that the level of spiciness and saltiness was tolerable.
Content with the outcome of her crafting, Caerbannog took the second bowl, walked over to Capsule and placed it close to her materials. Not too close to the edge of the table for her rabbit could make a mess of it, as most rabbits usually did get into trouble for that. Hrairoo was no exception; it tried to hop onto the chef’s head as she passed by but it missed by a mile. The frenmic creature was not hurt though since it was not able to jump high enough anyway and just landed on its own four paws. Caerbannog nodded at Capsule and, without a word, went back to her side of the crafting area. She did not want to bother the enchanter but thought it best to share the soup while it was warm. On her way back, Caerbannog picked up her wayward rabbit and set it upon a chair again.
Soup was done. It had both vegetables and meat, so the chef sat down and wondered what she could do next. A spicy snack was out of the question for her soup was already warm and slightly hot to taste. How about a fried meal? Hopefully, incoming adventurers would not gorge on it though for they would be susceptible to sickness debuffs; that or they’d get fat. Her final preparation would be a sweet confection, and that at least was easy to decide on. Back to the preparation for her current dish, Caerbannog asked the landers for some flour, eggs and more herbs or spices. Those basic items were provided without a question while some landers put the chef’s soup into bowls for some adventurers who just walked in.
To the chef’s surprise, there were small bottles of dried sage, basil and rosemary. They weren’t the kind used for creating potions though since medicine usually required fresh herbs. The ones for cooking were sun-dried through and through to create a distinct odor, flavor and texture. At least Caerbannog did not have to chop up herbs and leave them out to dry in the sun. So, the first thing to do for her next dish was to cut up some vegetables which she promptly and quickly did. Carrots, what looked like zucchini, lettuce and some large edible mushrooms; she sliced the carrot thinly so that it would be cooked at the same pace as the other items.
Next, she had to create the batter from scratch. Caerbannog used a bowl provided by the landers, something which was larger than the ones she used so far, and put flour and cool water in it. She then mixed that up just a little so that the water and flour were combined adequately for her purpose. The chef then beat three whole eggs of questionable origin, probably from Elder Tale’s version of chickens, and put it in the batter mix. The dried herbs were soon combined with the batter along with some salt and pepper. Caerbannog once again mixed the batter without completely taking out the clumps. She was unsure of how chemistry or something similar worked in Elder Tale, but she would not risk making a dough-like batter mixture. The chef then put a deep frying pan on the stove, put a lot of cooking oil in it and turned the fire up to quickly heat the pan and oil. She then sat down to rest while the pan was being heated up.

"Oh, thank you," she said as she saw that the bowl was a sampling of soup. Capsule's stomach rumbled eagerly at the scent of the soup, which was definitely the real thing and not that horrid crud Landers and the system called "food." Fiver eyed the soup as well, perhaps because of the strong scent of celery that came from the bowl. The rabbit had followed Caer back from the stove, and was back in its chair. She lightly flicked him on the nose when he tried to scrabble up onto the table. "No no no~. This is not for you, little mister." The rabbit gave a soft squeak of exasperation as the redhead lifted the bowl out of its reach. "Go ask Caer for scraps? I'm sure she'll give you something." Fiver, presumably understanding his owner, hopped down from the chair and scurried off to shamelessly beg for a tiny morsel.
The soup tasted even better than it smelled, and sent tendrils of warmth down Capsule's throat and stomach. It was so rare for her to have a warm meal nowadays; this was the best so far, and reminded her of the real world. "Mmph, delicious. My compliments to the chef," she cheered, ignoring the stares the Landers gave her. They had a lot to learn from Caerbannog.
While she was eating, her potion had boiled itself to perfection. Still sipping the soup, Capsule turned off the burner and stirred the contents of the pot. She allowed the mixture to sit for a bit longer until she finished her soup, and then set the bowl aside in favor of a beaker and vial. The mixture was shaken one last time before she lifted the pot and carefully poured the green liquid into the beaker. She swished the green liquid around for a moment, until she was pleased with the way it had turned out. Her bonus, Therapeutic Index should boost the effectiveness of the level ten potion's healing ability, and was sure to outfox any potions the Landers could craft. The green liquid was then stored within the vial she had set aside for it, and said vial was placed in the "finished" pile. It was still warm to the touch, though it should cool down before being handed off to an Adventurer.
The next potion Capsule had in mind was one she had yet to craft - the elusive Potion of Nighteye. She should probably wash out her tools first, so that the remainders of the healing potion did not taint this one. It was also the reason why she never made poisons before healing pots. That would result in some horrifying effects. "Let's see - beaker, spoon, pot…" Her mortar and pestle were perfectly fine; she would only be using it for grind the one herb she had cut up earlier, after all.
One of the Landers showed her to the sink, where she rolled up her sleeves and scrubbed at her tools in warm, sudsy water. She cleaned the pot and beaker with the utmost care; all it took was a tiny bit of residue to ruin the batch. For each piece she washed and rinsed, the Lander attending her at the sink would dry and set aside. The pot came first, followed by the spoon and beaker. "Danke," she offered to the Lander on her way back to the table. The tools were then neglected by Cap for her mortar and pestle, where she sprinkled the remains of the diced herb into. The grinding was process was going to grow old fast, but she expected that she would still enjoy mixing chemicals together. It was usually fun to make things go kaboom - er, useful potions.
Capsule wondered if she should just commandeer a few pots and leave them boiling ahead of time to cut down on time, and decided against it. It was not good for fluff, after all, which was what she was going for here. 'Oh, wait. Should I be boiling anything?' ...She had better consult the recipe, just to be sure. She pulled up her system menu and retrieved the recipe from her inventory. The steps were pretty standard for this level, and did include heating up the ingredients to help dissolve the herb. It would also be best to add the solvents along with the herb before the heating process began. 'Alright, then.' Because this was her first time making the potion, she had little idea if it would turn out like it was supposed to. Testing it would be a joy, at least.

Before Caerbannog could look more into what the enchanter was doing though, she felt a soft tap against her boot. The other rabbit in the vicinity, Capsule’s pet, found its way to the chef and seemed to be asking for something. The chef looked over to Hrairoo who had just finished eating its carrot and was looking to have some more. It twitched its little nose at Caerbannog so she thought hey, why not give the cute little ones what they wanted. So she stood up and gathered what was left of the celery, and then she cut a carrot in half. A handful of those things she gave to Roo while the other half of the celery and carrot mix was put on a plate and given to Capsule’s pet.
Caerbannog then noticed that the air above the frying pan was slightly distorted; it meant that the cooking oil was very hot already. She lowered the intensity of the fire beneath the pan and then she walked over to the bowl with cool batter. Only a few minutes had passed so the mixture was still at the appropriate temperature. She then put some of the sliced vegetables into the batter and tossed them around using a fork. Once the slices were thinly coated, the chef put them in the frying pan and made sure that they would not stick together. It was a bit difficult to cook vegetable tempura without a thermometer for the oil and without a cooler for the batter. However, it was a better option than a completely fried meal of questionable meat or some junk food.
The chef used the fork to turn over some of the vegetables and as she expected, they had been cooked quickly. Fortunately she did slice the food items as thinly as she could while making sure that they would not be too thin, otherwise the things would fall apart when fried. Caerbannog was slightly worried about the carrots and hoped that they would retain their texture somewhat; overcooked carrot in batter was not an ideal meal after all. She watched the pan diligently to make sure that her tempura would be cooked just right, and when the batter which coated the vegetables turned a pale golden color, the chef picked them off the hot oil and put them on a clean tray with a fresh dishcloth on it. It would serve to drain the excess oil so that the fried vegetables would not be greasy when eaten.
There were still a lot of sliced vegetables left on the table so Caerbannog put that in the batter mixture too. After a few tosses and turns, the slices were coated thoroughly and into the frying pan they went. The chef so wished that she could check the cooking oil’s temperature, but there was no way to do so accurately even if she dipped her finger into the pan. While the battered vegetables sizzled in the frying pan with their characteristic light crackling sounds, Caerbannog glanced at the rabbits. Hrairoo at least was done with its meal and it sniffed at the air again, probably due to the aroma of fried carrots. It had a faint sweet smell while the fried mushrooms had an earthy scent. The lettuce-like leaves barely smelled like anything though the frenmic rabbits in the tent could probably smell it. As for the fried zucchini, Caerbannog was not sure what to expect of it. The items looked just like some fried discs without any color or character. The next batch of tempura was soon done as well and so Caerbannog put them on the tray while she transferred the previously fried batch onto a large plate. The process was repeated with two more batches of sliced vegetables dipped in cold batter, and soon that was all done. The fire beneath the frying pan was promptly turned off and the last batch of tempura was soon drained of excess oil and ready to be served.
To add flavor to the dish, the girl opted to make her own dip from whatever ingredients were available. Caerbannog first looked for some soy sauce which would make her preparation so much easier. One of the landers handed a small bottle of soy sauce to her which the chef then inspected. Surprisingly, it did taste like soy sauce and the landers explained that they purchased most of their condiments from some chefs at Londenium. The girl proceeded with her preparation once she found that ingredient for her sauce. She put some soy sauce into a small bowl and added sugar and pepper into it. The tempura batter already had herbs so Caerbannog did not add more herbs into the sauce. Instead, she crushed some sesame seeds and combined them with the soy sauce mixture.
The dip was put in a small bowl beside the vegetable tempura, and only then did the chef notice that some of the vegetables were still leaking oil. She quickly pulled out a different tray with two layers of cloth and tossed the tempura onto it. It would take a while before the oil was soaked thoroughly by the cloth which was rather essential to the process, otherwise the fried dish would end up greasy and soggy. She turned the vegetables every few seconds and then she put the drained ones onto a different plate. It would not take long for her dish to finally, truly be done.

She let those set and slowly bubble in the pot before adding the grounded bits of herb to the concoction. A light green gas poofed into the air as the powder made contact with the water and solution. That...could not be a good thing, right? Capsule picked up her spoon and bravely poked and prodded at the contents of the pot. There was another poof of green smoke, but this one was fainter and barely noticeable. If she had done something wrong, she did not know what; the recipe had been followed to the t, but had said nothing of any unwanted effects. This was a little frustrating and embarrassing. It did not help that there were a few Landers watching her and taking notes. 'Jeebus…'
The Pharmacist adapted a false look of certainty as she took a break to slurp down the rest of her soup, and wiped at her mouth with the back of her hand. "Hm. Yes, this seems to be quite adequate." The Landers hanging nearby shot excited glances at each other and hurriedly scribbled something down on their pieces of parchment. '...I can't believe they actually bought that.' One of them even came over to ask her a few questions and to observe at a closer distance. Another was kind enough to fetch her empty soup bowl and return it to the "kitchen".
"It's simple, you see. You just cut and grind this herb into a fine powder, and then add it to the pot with solvents and a wee bit of water." The fact that the Landers were hanging onto her every word was amusing, to say the least.
"And what happens after that?"
"Huh? Oh. You just have to let it boil for a bit, then leave it to simmer before collecting it into a beaker to test it. You could just skip that skip and pour it straight into a flask or beaker, but unless you know what you're doing, you should make sure it works, first, or at least has the right consistency." As she spoke, Capsule stirred the potion one more time, and turned the heat off. Her beaker was handed over when she gestured to it, and proceeded to use her spoon (which was more of a ladle) to collect and distribute the potion into the beaker. "This is my first time making this potion - the Potion of Nighteye - so I cannot confidently pour it into the vial without checking it first."
"And how do you go about doing that?"
"Well…" She hesitated. "I usually test my potions on animals or fellow Adventurers, but I kind of don't have that luxury right now. Plus, I need it to be dark, but I guess I can tell by the light sensitivity too." The Landers around her watched with awe as she took out a little dropper tool from her magic bag, and retrieved a small sample. According to the provided recipe, she was to drink this and not use it as eye drops. Neither application appealed to her. Unfortunately, she would just have to grin and bear it. If the recipe said it could be ingested…
"Gulp." The two drops she placed on her tongue tasted faintly of herb, but strongly of the chemical solution mixed in. It was pretty darn horrible. Capsule wrinkled her nose in disgust, and then in annoyance as her eyes began to itch. Was this the potion taking effect…? 'There's only one way to tell…' When she opened her eyes, everything was a tinted shade of green. She presumed she would be able to see better in the dark as well, but had no time to test that theory, for her vision was clearing up already. "It works, but the effect is better when the full potion is drunk." The flesh on her face flushed a shade that matched her hair as the Landers clapped. "And that's how you make the Potion of Nighteye!" She smiled nervously, running a hand through her red locks.
The group of Landers were broken up by another, who told them to stop bothering Capsule and let her work - not like there was much left to do to this potion, anyway. Now that she knew that it worked, all she had to do was add the remainder of the beaker into an empty vial, which she stoppered and set down beside the healing formula. Now all that left was the poison vial - a nasty looking vial of green liquid.

The batter had just the right crispiness and was of a nice light gold color. It wasn’t too thick nor too think, and the herbs made it flavorful. Caerbannog checked this by trying one carrot tempura which she dipped in the sesame soy sauce. Unlike most of her fried meals which were very greasy, tempura had a light flavor and the oiliness was minimal. The vegetable ingredients also made it less fattening, hopefully, compared to fried meat. She set aside a small amount on a plate and put it on the table for the landers and Capsule. A bit of the sesame soy sauce was put on a separate dipping bowl for their use while the rest was put in some clear condiment bottles for the adventurers.
With that done, both the pharmacist and the chef had two out of three of their objectives fulfilled. The last recipe that Caerbannog opted to use was that of sweet confection. It was a mana-regenerating food item and, as the name indicated, was sweet. Candies and pastries came to mind whenever sweet confection was mentioned, but she did not have the luxury of time to create pastries. Moreover, Caerbannog wanted to make something that was healthy too. She went over to the crates and looked for apples, the smallest but prettiest and most fragrant ones that she could find. Hrairoo twitched its nose at her direction and so the chef cut an apple in half and gave one part each to the frenmic rabbits in the scene, both hers and Capsule’s. She made sure to remove the core and the seeds of course.
Once the apples were gathered, Caerbannog looked for sticks and the rest of the items that she would need for making some caramel apples. Instead of using large apples which was the norm back in the real world, the chef chose small apples as long as they were fresh, firm and fragrant enough for her. She chose those so that they would set quickly due to the smaller area that the caramel had to cover. That aside, she soon gathered the ingredients that she needed to make caramel. It would have been easier if Elder Tale has condensed milk but alas, there was none. Condensing and evaporating were real world techniques which were yet to be replicated in the game. Regardless, she could work with what she found: brown sugar, cream, butter and salt.
Making caramel was simple enough. She did not have to preheat the sauce pan, otherwise some of the ingredients would have been burned. Instead, Caerbannog combined all of the caramel ingredients in a sauce pan and put it on the stove with the fire lighted up to a medium flame. She stirred the ingredients continuously until they were combined and then she waited for the mixture to boil. As anticipated, bubbles formed on the caramel’s surface to indicate that it reached its boiling point. Caerbannog then pulled out a tray and put some cold water on it, and then she put the sauce pan on that tray. She stirred the caramel until it was thoroughly mixed and slightly stiff. Next, she cleaned the apples with some warm water and pulled out their stems. Those stems were then replaced with the sticks that the chef found earlier.
Caerbannog stirred the caramel again; a sweet aroma wafted in the air, the smell of cooked cream with butter and sugar. It had a nice brownish color, neither too dark nor too light. Once the chef was sure that there were no more bubbles in the mixture, she dipped an apple into it and coated the fruit completely. She turned the apple around over the sauce pan to make sure that an excess caramel dripped off, and then she set the caramel apple down on a separate tray with its new stem, the stick, facing up. She had a lot of apples and a lot of caramel, so Caerbannog spent quite a while to make those food items. She set aside one caramel apple for Capsule and noted that the caramel was setting quickly. Despite the lack of refrigeration, the consistency of the caramel that the chef made allowed it too cool in room temperature.
Soon enough, the chef was done with stuff on her end of the table. The caramel apples were lined up in trays and were ready for consumption. Caerbannog looked at the morale requirement of the quest though. What did they have to do? Do they have to serve the potions and food items to the adventurers too? The blue-eyed girl pondered upon that one thought before she looked over to the enchanter to check how she was doing. While Caerbannog waited for her companion, she ate one of her own caramel apples and made quite a mess of it on her own face.

Thankfully the first step was already taken care of, and grinding herbs became a breeze with a mortar and pestle that wasn't complete garbage. There was a slight stumbling block, however, which was her lack of familiarity with making poisons. As someone who could not exactly benefit from the use of such a potion, Capsule had only made it once thus far, and would only do so again when there was a demand for it from customers. Everyone seemed to prefer medicinal tablets, though. 'And something smells good,' she thought, obviously not about her potions. Not even the healing potions had such a sweet and pleasing scent.
Capsule could not resist sneaking another peek at Caerbannog, who was hard at work with a little pot and something that looked like caramel. Was she making candy? Cap's mouth watered at the thought. She hadn't had candy since that time she had roped Blackcoat, a Chef, into making some tea. The man had brought along some premade candy. Capsule's lust for sweets was overcome with urgency. The rational part of her brain warned her that candy would most likely not take long to make, and that Caer could easily beat her if she continued to dawdle. 'I can't have that.'
For the Impure Poison, she added only two teaspoons of water before dumping in the powdered herb and the two impure solvents. She was mentally willing the mixture to boil faster when she saw Caer pull out another ingredient - apples. 'Caramel apples?' Oh man. She knew that these were supposed to be contributions to the cause, but if she was allowed to be selfish for a few minutes… 'I wonder if she takes requests.' Having the occasional cooked meal instead of ingredients slapped together would be nice. Perhaps she could use her rapidly growing funds for that purpose? Spitting out an extra one thousand gold from interest certainly made it easier, at any rate.
Caerbannog was already dipping the apples into the sweet mixture when Cap's potion was finally starting to boil. That delicious temptation would be out of her grasp in two shakes of a puppy dog's tail. She lightly stirred the brewing poison for a few seconds, and then left it alone to sit while she reached for an empty vial. Although she had only made poison once, she did not feel it was pertinent to test it. The obvious signs of deadly toxins were all there - the misty green smoke that spiraled out of the pot, and the nasty shade of green of the bubbling liquid within. That and the air around the pot made her cough, when it normally didn't. Perhaps a surgical mask would have been a wise idea.
Like the potion before it, Capsule used her ladle like spoon to scoop up the poisonous mixture and pour it into the vial, careful to keep her hands steady and her mind preoccupied on that one task. She could recover from poison effects twice as fast, thanks to her passive skill as a Pharmacist, but would still like to avoid any incidents if possible. Poison was definitely not something that you wanted to screw around with. Fiver, who often curiously poked his head around her potions, refused to go anywhere near anything that was toxic, for example. 'This should be all of it.' The way her spoon scraped against the bottom of the pot pretty much proved it. Sadly, making potions just wasn't exciting as it sounded. Capsule was therefore glad to be done brewing for today.
"And bam," she said, setting her final potion down beside the others. A little notification flashed in the corner of her eye, telling her that the required amount of potions and food stuffs had been completed. All that was left was to raise player morale, which she figured they would be doing by passing out the food and potions.
This time when Capsule stole a glance at Caer, the girl was eating away at a caramel apple, which was more on her face than in her mouth. She then looked to the tray of caramel apples near Caer, and to the single one sitting to the side. Surely this was her caramel apple; the soup sample from earlier was a sign of this. 'Awyis~.'
Rather than rush over there like a starving man, however, Capsule calmly stored her completed potions within a small box, which she kept tucked under her arm as she walked to Caer's end of the table. She had an urge to wipe the girl's face clean with the end of her cloak, but resisted and offered her a napkin, instead. "And I guess this one is mine~?" Capsule could barely contain the childish glee she felt by picking up the apple, and gave a happy sigh when she bit into the caramel deliciousness. Oh God. This was heaven. She almost said something absurd like "Marry me, Caerbannog," but she wasn't into women unless they were the androgynous or masculine sort, and odds were stacked on Caer being straight. "Shall we get going, then? Or should we wait for Rose…?" Capsule wasn't too sure if her assumptions were correct, and did not like the idea of looking like an ass.

Chefs and brewers are needed to keep everyone's morale up. Your contribution toward this task will be rewarded adequately. NPC: Rose List of Objectives:- Craft useful medicine or potions: 3/3 - Craft tasty food or meals: 3/3 - Raise adventurer morale: 1/1 Participants:[Pharmacist] Capsule Lv30 [Chef] @dindeen Lv11 Subclass: Chef | Equipped: Pitch-black Yukata | Tools: Cooking Utensils - :: -Skill: Iron Stomach (Passive) The blue-eyed chef nodded at Capsule when the enchanter asked about the caramel apple which Caerbannog kindly set aside for her fellow adventurer. A napkin was offered to the chef, one which she accepted as a subtle hint that her face was a complete mess. It was a bit difficult to clean up once the caramel cooled down, but with some tap water, the chef was able to make herself look presentable once again. And right on time too for Rose walked back into the tent after one of the landers informed her of the adventurers’ accomplishments.
“ Well, this’ll do. There’s one last thing though, “ the quest giver said as she inspected the food items and then the potions and medicine, “ There’s a big party coming in, so help us distribute these stuff. After that, I’ll mark off your quest as completed and you can be on your way. “
Not a moment later, a party of adventurers did walk into the tent. Actually, it was less of a party and more of a raid. The adventurers were evidently tired though and while some of them chose to refill their stocks of medicine and potion, those who were extremely tired and hungry sat down on any vacant chair and proceeded to call for the lander waitresses. Someone gently pushed Caerbannog from behind, one of the landers, and she took that as a cue to offer her dishes.
To those who wanted filling meals, the chef gave out some of her soup and to those who just wanted some comfort food, she offered the tempura which could be eaten as snacks. They were a bit like potato chips but not as greasy or thin. Lastly, to some tired casters, Caerbannog distributed her caramel apples. That might have been her sole mistake that day though, for as soon as the other adventurers saw the nostalgic sweets, they flocked around her and took everything in the tray. The look of disdain on some of their faces was undeniable when they found out that the caramel apples were all gone. But overall, the adventurers seemed more lively than usual.
Caerbannog soon excused herself and waited for Capsule to finish her end of the morale-raising requirement. As soon as that episode ended, Rose walked over to the two and approved their quest, after which they were free to do as they pleased. Not a moment too soon, Hrairoo hopped over to its tamer and demanded that it be allowed to perch on her head once again. The chef reached down towards the little brown frenmic rabbit and it happily scurried up her arm. The creature soon found its usual perch and from that height, it scanned the whole room for nothing in particular. Hrairoo was just weird like that.
With the quest completed, the chef would say her well-wishes to the pharmacist and thank her for the partnership. It was her first crafting quest at the Sarum Expedition Camp and it turned out pretty well. Due to that experience too, the chef was able to figure out a bit more regarding the pharmacist crafting class. She completed a quest, helped some people both landers and adventurers, and learned something about a different class. All in all, it was quite a fine day.
