It's hard to choose an emotion that fits such a situation as suddenly being transported into a video game. Of course, the first thing to consider is the type of person the involved individual is. The brave, adventurous would probably be excited beyond words after the initial shock -- and yes, anyone would be shocked to find themselves standing in the very spot they left their character in a video game standing before packing up for the night. At least at first. If they are the timid, uneasy type, they'd likely soil themselves and assume the fetal position. The curious ones would fret, but would also try to find a way out or try to figure how they had landed themselves in such a situation. The analytical type would mirror the curious in curiousity, but their own research would be much more calm and extensive, and any information gathered would likely be put to much greater use. Yes, there are many different ways of reacting to such a scenario.
So what exactly did Madeline Gracie, seventeen-year-old high school resident of Liverpool, England do? Well, to put it simply: nothing.
Now that's not to say she simply stood there, dumbfounded and emotionless. Nor was it to say that she was too incompetent to comprehend the situation -- in fact, the realization came to her all too quickly. She simply wasn't sure what to do with what she had just been handed. "Hey kid, we heard you like video games. So we're just gonna throw you on your head into the last game you were playing." Oooookaaaay. So, now what? What was the purpose? Why had this happened, and what did whoever was responsible hope to achieve? Was she the only one? Was it dangerous? And most important of all: how?
This last question is, of course, the most irrelevant. Knowing how one got into a video game could help decipher how to get out, maybe; but honestly, when has anything ever gone so much in someone's favor that they were immediately able to eject themselves from an undesirable situation?
Exactly. Never. So why even bother trying?
The first order of business was obviously figuring out if you were in any immediate danger. If you know right off-hand what you've just been thrown into, then you likely have at least a little bit of knowledge about the current conditions of your situation. In this case, Madeline knew that she had been somehow thrown into the MMORPG Elder Tale. That much was clear enough. She also knew that before last shutting down the game in which she now stood, she had left her character in a relatively safe area, devoid of any aggressive or threatening mobs. You may ask yourself, "What does knowing where you left a character in a video have to do with anything?" Well, Madeline also happened to have already deciphered that she herself had been "transformed" into her Elder Tale character.
Okay, so I've skipped ahead a bit. Honestly, I couldn't think of a good way for Madeline to react to this situation. I thought, "I'll just start writing, we'll see where that gets me." But to be honest, her reaction wouldn't have been very interesting or particularly unique. She had gone to bed the night (or even minutes or seconds for all she knew) before and had awoken here, smack dab in the middle of the Windsor Greatwood or Elder Tale. Literally. Of course, she didn't immediately recognize it as the Greatwood; it just looks like she was standing in the middle of some forest or other. Luckily, she was able recognize a couple of landmarks, and after only a few minutes, realized something was off (aside from waking up in the woods when you distinctly remember falling asleep in your bed). As her synapse began to fire, she then became aware that she felt different, physically speaking. As she looked around, she felt disoriented and unbalanced, and she could feel heavy cloth covering her body. She looked down and inspected herself, finding that she was wearing what appeared to be a black robe and breeches. She could also see locks of long, ghost white hair on the edge of her vision, which she also inspected. More synapses began to fire and she had a sudden impulse to check another part of her body. No, you weirdos. Her ears. To her diminishing surprise, she found long, pointed ears in place of her formerly normal ears. This was the last telling factor in the equation: there was no doubt in her mind that she had somehow, by some inconceivable means, become her Elder Tale character, Koda.
Now you would likely think someone would break down at this point, and get really excited to know that they had been transported into a video game. Madeline, however, just sighed submissively. The facts were clear, even if the situation wasn't. If she didn't know anything else, trying to reason against the fact that she was now Koda, level 1 Sorcerer in the popular MMORPG Elder Tale, was definitely out of the question. There was no denying it, and, at the moment, no apparent way to fix it.
So what now? Well, sitting around doing nothing wasn't going to get anyone anywhere. However, that is exactly what Madeline did. She simply wasn't sure what to do. She knew where she was, "who" she was, but what did a person in this situation do in the first five minutes? The entire situation was absurd. This certainly wasn't the work of some virtual reality promotion. Or if it was, someone was gonna get a rather lengthy letter regarding privacy and mental endangerment. Actually, that'd make for a pretty good settlement claim. To Madeline's knowledge, VR was still only being experimented with (not to mention those masks or helmets or whatever people are calling them these days look absolutely ridiculous). So that was out of the equation, for the most part. The whole thing was so puzzling that the thought of actually doing anything beyond "WTF"ing and "Nope"ing yourself to death was currently beyond her.
Still, she had already decided that at the current time, there was no fighting this situation. She would have to, as they say, "roll with the punches" for now. Sighing and shaking her once more, she threw her hands up in defeat.
"Fine. I'll play along. For now."
