It had certainly been a while since he last left the relative safety of Londinium with the sole intent of grinding up his level. It was inevitable, he supposed, given the competitive nature of his gamer soul which could not stand the sight of people who were already at the level cap while he had yet to even reach the halfway mark. It could even override his innate desire to be lazy, and thus was the reason he found himself in the great outdoors, which was not so great to him, ready to kill a couple of mobs for materials, gold and most importantly, experience.
As he trudged through the Savill Flower Grove, he watched his surroundings lazily for opponents, most of which were lower level mobs which he steered clear of. Those were not his targets today. Today, he was planning to take on mobs which were around his level - mobs which only resided in the deeper parts of the Flower Grove. As much as he did not like the trek, it was all for his levels; he could bear with it. Sure, he could have gone back to Sarum, with its abundance of golems to beat up, but Sarum was a longer way off, so unless he really, really, REALLY had to go there, it would be unlikely to find him there, save for the reason of looking around the town of Sarum itself once they recaptured it.
Speaking of which, he had already joined the recapture squad and was currently awaiting the right moment to charge in with a motley gang of strangers. Perhaps he would even make a new friend during the recapture.
That aside, his target for today was a reptile known as the 「Angioserpent」. He had done some research on the reptile, so he knew of a few things: Firstly, it was carnivorous. It did not bode well for a sack of meat such as himself. Secondly, it preferred hiding under flower patches to launch surprise attacks, which meant that as long as he was cautious around the, er, numerous flower patches which totally did not surround him, he should be fine. Should. Thirdly, they were known for constricting their foes and using their paralyzing venom to stun their prey. The sad part about this trip was that he did not have any anti-stun tablets with him. He knew they were being researched by another Pharmacist, but the end product had yet to reach the production stage, so he would be helpless against the venom. He only hoped his Pharmacist passive skill, Detox, would save him from the worst of it. Lastly, while they were known as a Predatory species, it seemed that there were few cases of them attacking Adventurers first. Perhaps they only retaliate due to an invasion of their private space, he thought as he entered a clearing.
As soon as he stepped into the clearing, there was a soft rustle behind him. In one fluid motion, he drew his sword, «Firefly», and swung it in a low, fairly horizontal arc, catching an 「Angioserpent」 in the face as it lunged out from a flower patch. So much for 'few cases of not attacking Adventurers first'. The level sixteen 「Angioserpent」 was far from a beautiful snake. Either that, or this one happened to not be one of them. A grey, slim body led up to a snakey-looking face with a deep ugly laceration on it. Oops, that was probably his fault.
The 「Angioserpent」 recovered fast. It shook off his attack like nothing and lunged probably less than a second after he made his reactionary strike, wrapping itself around his right arm which wielded «Firefly».
Hey, no problem. A second sword, «Discharge», one which he conveniently kept in his inventory for this very reason, materialized in front of him and attached itself to the snake's flesh, rewarding him with a pained hiss.
His happiness was short-lived for two reasons. Firstly, the snake would not budge simply because that meant grinding itself on the sharp blade of his sword. Secondly, its head was still free, which it casually used to bite his arm, sending pain through him as it worked its venom through him.
Ouch, that hurt. A lot. He tried to fling it off of him, but as expected, it held fast.
For a brief moment, he was vaguely reminded of the time someone's cat clung onto his face and he kept nodding to try and throw it off. Man, those were the fun times. He wished he did not have to do this, but there was little else he could to train himself. One could only grow stronger through practice, after all.
Flicking his right wrist as the 「Angioserpent」 squeezed the life out of his right arm, he caught «Firefly» with his left hand and promptly jammed it into the snake's head.
Damn, this thing is tenacious.
Fortunately, due to their level difference, the war of attrition would result in his win. The snake was already down to half of its remaining hit points while he stood at a healthy 80% thanks to his armor. The paralyzing venom did little to help the snake as he did not even have to move to kill it; having the blades inside the snake would deal all the damage he needed to deal.
Less than a minute later, the snake's arm-numbing grip slackened and he felt its fangs loosen as it finally died. It burst into loot, signalling the end of the encounter.
He stumbled back a few steps, then landed hard on his butt. At the same time, he returned «Discharge» to his inventory to save space. Fighting one of these things was more troublesome than he thought. His right arm felt like it was crushed after the encounter with the snake and the rest of his body felt numb from taking in all of its venom. Ahhh, he could not fight like this. If this was what it felt like after taking on just one of them, he was more inclined to retreat and, um, NOT fight these guys by avoiding them where possible. That sounded like a nice plan.
After he got over the pain and the numbing feeling he got up and made his way back from whence he came. No point lingering around to let other mobs find him, after all.
Yet as he stepped into the bushes, another snake leaped out of a flower patch to attack him. Not this again, he sighed. Another tiring, painful battle that will not end well.
It truly did not end well for the 「Angioserpent」, but at the same time, he was forced back to recuperate from the paralyzing numbness and the griping constriction. Great, more time vulnerable to the dozens of other threats in the Grove. He had to get out fast, before something like the Treant comes along and shoots him into the next continent. Struggling to his feet, he continued on his journey home.
And it happened yet again. Where were these cursed snakes coming from? They were not present when he first foraged into this section of the woods...
It was after what was probably the tenth time did he remember, he had the «Call of Home» skill. What had he been doing all this while? Sighing at his own incompetence and forgetfullness, he activated the skill. Moments later, he found himself at the border between Londinium and the ouside world. His harrowing ordeal was over. At least, it was in the mental sense.
His body was still wrecked with pain from the multiple areas the snakes had decided to constrict and a general sense of numbness after repeated contact with the venom. He stumbled through the gates, glad to be in a safe zone at last. His first order of business should be to retreat to retreat to his hidey hole and rest. It was a tiring day and honestly, all he wanted to do was rest.
As he stumbled in the direction of home, however, he felt a dull pain in the back of his shins. It was a strange pain, a pain that seemed out of place given the numbness of his body. Glancing back, he saw that the head of a dead 「Angioserpent」 was stuck on him. GODDAMNIT THESE SNAKES. Ripping the head off of his body, he disposed of it in a bin not too far from him before staggering home. The snakes are obviously far more trouble than they're worth. I need to look for a better target that does not involve snakes, constriction and what not. Just pure, raw damage.
Upon reaching home, the first thing he did after closing the door was to collapse on the floor. Hey, the floor was as a good place to sleep as any. Curling up on the floor may not seem like the wisest thing to do, considering his bed was a mere few meters away, but he was tired, and when he was tired, anything went. With scarcely a sound, he slowly drifted off to sleep on the floor.
