Lavinia had posted a request on the AAA bulletin board, a request for an alchemist to aid her in researching a rather scary, dangerous and curious gas... Miasma. The substance was dangerous, and everywhere, but had potential for many innovations in combat and out. So, Lavinia wanted to know more, she had hopped for a start to be able to develop a more effective method for treating corruption, the side effect of lengthy or high level miasma exposure, since bettering the world is a overall constant goal for our enchantress. It had been two days since she had posted the request and today was the day that she had asked for whoever interested to met her. Lavinia had planned to do basic research at her home or around it on the environment so she invited whoever would answer the call to her home. Maybe not the brightest idea inviting a stranger to her home, but she held the keys to all of the settings so she figured things would be fine.
Today was the day Lavinia had requested any interested persons to meet her at her house and so she waited. She had everything thought she needed, a few cans of Miasma-cleansing spray, all the health potions they could possibly need at the house, she also had a notepad for taking notes and doing math if necessary. So really all that was left to do is wait, and so Lavinia did. Waiting in the library Lavinia reads through a book called “The sword through the centuries” while sitting on a sofa. Lavinia has been studying for the last few weeks or so on the proper ways to use a sword. She had hoped she would be able to switch up her play style from a more pure support to a hybrid support enchanter in certain situations. With enough training and a well made sword, Lavinia thought that she would be able to duck in and out of melee range in a fight. She wasnt entirely sure on the soundness of this theory, but she wasn't against learning a new skill and it wouldn't hurt to know how to use a sword in this world that everyone now calls home. It didn't really matter how long it took the person to come or if they came at all, Lavinia's alternate plan was to read this book all day or go outside and practice her stance with her sword.

It was a request for an Alchemist, on the AAA Board! Really, she was probably the only active Alchemist in Apocrypha as far as that was concerned. Not to mention that if it had been posted on the AAA bulletin, that must have meant there weren't any active Alchemists in that guild either. So, basically this request was in a way directed right to her. 'We know about your connection to Miasma and that you're an Alchemist, come or else'. Nah, it probably wasn't something as hostile as that. She doubted that a message that probably could have come right from the Hirosame-Kumori quest could have been feasible in this kind of situation. Speaking of which, she had recognized the name of the person making the request. This was the Enchanter who had given the breakout party a number of potions prior to their operation. Midori had a good impression with her due to how prepared she had been for the mission, but she hadn't yet been able to make her acquaintance. She wondered if she was giving out the air of intimidation, because while people knew that Apocrypha had two divisions, no one had really heard about the second division as much, not even the aspiring members of the guild.
Nevertheless, Midori was rather curious. She herself had ventured off to study the phenomenon of Miasma as well. She had come back having shed the title of Sorcerer and becoming the Heretic class. However, she hadn't considered the idea that approaching the mysterious phenomenon from the perspective of an Alchemist probably could have taught her more about its power. According to what early researchers had said, Miasma was considered a third Major Element alongside Anima and Psyche. Midori had figured that the dark magic she controlled was something of a different nature. She knew that manipulating the power of mana as an Alchemist had felt a little more pure, as though she were extracting energy from deep inside her heart. Whereas, manipulating Miasma was another monster of its own, an ability that seemed to uncover hidden emotions that she had thought to be long buried beneath her personality. It was really a strange and uncomfortable feeling.
But maybe that just wasn't the root to the entire thing at all. Maybe she was becoming true to herself and she wanted some more meaningful friendships. Ever since their guild had allied itself with Aeryn, Midori had felt that her friendships thus far had seemed to slip away. The friends she joined Elder Tale with had disappeared a long time ago. Hiro was beginning to associate himself with other influential members of the Adventurer society, which resulted in this situation happening in the first place. But Midori... all she had been doing was continuing to hide herself, afraid to reach out and talk to anyone. She wanted to change, to move on from the her who joined this game wanting companionship into the her that would be able to move along and fulfill her true talents.
It was worth a try. Midori answered the call and decided to head to the Pharmacist's house promptly on time as requested in the message. She knocked on the door and slowly opened it, speaking up.
"Hello! I'm here to head with the research request."

Some type that is good at slashing, but not so good at thrusting. Pretty boring stuff, but essential to the learning how to sword process. It really was boring, if Lavinia wasn't well rested she'd probably be dreaming right about now. Maybe dreaming about a certain redhead monk getting pummeled with pans and ladles. An amusing thought at least right?
It was around the expected time for the alchemist to arrive, if one was coming. Maybe Lavinia should have said say your coming so I'm not waiting around all day or something, oh well to late now. It would kind of depress her if no one showed, that "no one wants her around" issue she has showing it's head again. But luckily for our enchantress someone was going to show up and lend her a hand. Someone she may not have known, but known of, but Lavinia didn't even know this persons name yet. This person was Midori, that flying pan loving redhead monk's second in command. A cute girl, who Lavinia thought was just a bit shy or reserved maybe. Either way Lavinia wanted to get to know her more and fate would just happen to allow it. When Midori entered the front door and called in Lavinia immediately looked up from her book. Placing the bookmark in it's place inside the book Lavinia puts it down on the sofa and makes for the front door. Walking to the door Lavinia finds Midori and greets her with a smile. "You!" Lavinia says excitedly "Hey... I'm sorry, but I don't even know your name. I'm Lavinia." Lavinia says with a smile. Lavinia never did catch the girl standing in front of her's name, not even at the ball. Now's a good of time as any right?
Once the introductions were out of the way it was time to get down to business. The fact of the matter is, Lavinia has no real way to create miasma, at least not yet. So, she was solely relying on whoever had showed up for this. She expected a Heretic to show up actually, not a... whatever Midori is. What class is Midori anyway? If Lavinia had been paying attention during the rescue mission she would have a bit of a indication of said class. But because she wasn't, shes an idiot and missed her chance. "So, before we start, there is a problem. I can only provide half of our testing materials. I don't have a way to create adequate amounts of Miasma. I was really hoping whoever showed up knew of a way." Lavinia was actually rather that Midori didn't have such a method to create Miasma. She was expecting her to just quietly turn and leave. Lets hope she doesn't.

You! She was reminded a bit of a pun with a girl she had met in her small British-Japanese community back home. One of those girls in the town had the Japanese name 'Yuu', which caused some difficulty early on as she was starting to understand English. Good thing she had an English name. In any case, the two girls had recognized each other as soon as they had met, although they both did not actually remember each others' names due to the short duration in which they had met. She was fairly guilty of such a situation rather often in real life. From the name of a classmate in one of her groups to someone she'd just gotten to know yet was too absorbed by the conversation that she forgot their name, the young magician usually had other ways to solve the issue. Normally she'd do things like wait for a classmate or someone else to say the person's name. At other times, there were resources like checking a class roster, asking for the person's student email which was usually simple, or taking a peek at their name whenever they were on Facebook (remember everyone, don't check your Facebook during class or you'll probably run into people with different intentions compared to her innocent actions). Luckily this world had an interface system you could access if you just concentrate enough and imagine yourself to be clicking on the person in question, revealing the other person's name. Lavinia revealed her name while introducing herself, however.
"My name is Midori." she reflexively smiled back. "It's nice to meet you, Lavinia." That was also one way of becoming better at remembering names, to repeat them. However, she normally wouldn't do it unless she were conscious of it during introductions. Which was never.
Lavinia proceeded to talk about why she had called the young Alchemist here. She wanted to initiate a cover for an embarrassing bonding time thread- wait. Miasma was the topic and the raven-haired girl listened on to realize that the red-haired girl apparently did not know of her true class. For much of the past year, Midori was a Sorcerer. However, after exploring Avon and performing her own research into the power of Miasma, she became a Heretic herself. Soon after, she had chosen to hide her class title away from public view. Without that resource available, most Adventurers did not know what kind of skills were in the Heretic's available list. Midori herself didn't really look like a Heretic anyway. One would have expected a crazy homeless-looking person in a decrepid old robe to fit the bill, but she resembled a lightly-armored Samurai who apparently used magical weapons. In any case, she hoped that the other girl wouldn't freak out in the odd chance that she would have showed off her ability right now.
Ever since she had leveled, Midori had taken the skill called Oblivion Claw. It was a rather cool-sounding skill that had an equally impressive skill animation. Considering that it seemed to suit her slightly odd hybrid magical melee build fairly well, she had taken the skill and tried it perhaps once or twice. All she knew was that it was a skill that seemed to let out an intense amount of Miasma when used. Her own status window would show a new icon, that of a red 0 surrounded by a half-filled circle. Stage 0 Corruption, halfway to Stage 1. In any case, she announced to the other girl her intentions. "Actually, I think I have a skill that can do just that." she held out her palm and began to cast the spell. Suddenly, negative energy seemed to well up from inside her, causing the pale skin of her arm to quickly glow with a violet tint. After the skill was successfully used, her arm was bathed in a purple aura that resembled the shape of a beast's claws. It would only last for 10 seconds, so she figured if this was what Lavinia was looking for, it might take a couple of tries in her research.

A sound of curiosity escaped Lavinia's lips, pretty much an oh sound, but we couldn't say that straight out. Looking down at Midori's palm, it was obvious the gesture was for some kind of spell the Samurai... Heretic... whatever was about to cast. Lavinia looked at her palm as Miasma erupted from within and formed a beast like claw. The claw itself reminded Lavinia of maybe the hand of a dragon, the flame breathing beast's black talons razor sharp but the shape of the Miasma looked odd. It looked like it wouldn't deal a lot of damage but maybe it had some kind of extra effect. That is when Lavinia noticed Midori gain a new buff, not sure when that actually happened. Lavinia knew what the buff was and then everything fell into place. Midori was a Heretic, Burn the Heretic!, which explains a lot, it explains how she could see what they were doing through the pinkette cleric for starters. Lavinia recognized what the claw was, or at least she has read about it. Oblivion claw, the old texts describe it as the claw from an other worldly demon that robs the user of their first born child. Obviously complete unfathomable and most likely a result of just how much fear surrounds the Heretic class for Landers.
"That... should do nicely for our experiments." the enchantress says looking up from the claw at Midori. Lavinia was interested in Midori's choice of class, after all during her own time switching classes Heretic was on her list of choices. But, after much deliberation on her part she chose enchanter, a choice she does not regret at all of course, but maybe the enchantress once Enchanter is leveled to 90 she'll switch and level Heretic afterwards. Just a thought...
"I'm not sure how to go about this, but maybe we can try testing how the miasma reacts to outside stimuli and that will give us a path to follow, follow me please." Giving Midori a smile Lavinia turns and leads the Heretic to her potion room. The room that Lavinia leads Midori to is full of jars, bottles and everything a pharmacist could ever need. Magitech machines to help aid in mass producing consumables line one wall, another wall is covered in drawers that hold everything from various herbs to mana fragments and even some unmentionable bits and bobs. Walking over to her workbench Lavinia picks up the first testing element. Miasma-Cleasning Spray, an item invented to combat the effects of Heretics by those fearful of the effects of corruption. Lavinia turns to her Heretic test subject and holds up the spray. "Miasma-Cleasning Spray, I suppose we try seeing how the claw reacts to the spray for a start." Lavinia would spray the claw, but only if Midori has no objections. Lavinia was slightly worried about one aspect of this research and using Midori as a text subject. Since this was the first time she'd ever done anything like this and understanding the violent nature of Miasma through old texts she had hoped it would not cause Midori any discomfort. Sure, she had an almost unlimited supply of health potions, roughly the materials on hand to make about one hundred, which would allow her to ease any injuries Midori may happen to sustain. She still would feel awful about any harm that would befall her friend.

She glanced onto the corner of her vision to see the Miasma Corruption debuff taking place as she had remembered. It was the icon of a white circle with a red number 0 in its center. After Oblivion Claw was activated, the bar began to fill up until half of the white circle was changed to a black color. The filled-in portion was a little more different from some of the other skills she'd remembered, as the skill caused it to momentarily flash a pale blue color. She hadn't actually experienced Corruption levels past 1, so she didn't really have any firsthand experience of just what the phenomenon was capable of doing. The hand bathed in shadow changed back to normal as the skill's duration ran out. The blue-black portion of the icon went back down and returned it into a pure white circle. Apparently Oblivion Claw was one of the skills that did not leave a lasting effect on herself, much like many of the other skills she had used. Skills like Miasma Bullet and Miasma Curtain dealt damage and Corruption to enemies, but they didn't leave any traces on her own body.
In any case, Lavinia's eyes were piqued by the activation of her skill and she then led the young magician into another room. Midori looked around and saw a number of potions and medicines placed on cabinets and tabletops. She didn't really understand much of the organization behind the potions in the room, but it was a very appropriate research room for someone with the Pharmacist subclass. Lavinia brought up an idea on how they could have tested how the Miasma would react to outside forces. She held in her hands a small solution, a familiar-looking spray that she had often seen during her frequent visits to the Avon Valley. The girl held the Miasma-Cleansing Spray over Midori's hand, waiting for the claw to reappear once again. Midori herself did not know what was going to happen as a result of this experiment, so she took a deep breath and recasted the skill.
The shadowy aura reappeared, shrouding her fingertips and wrapping her forearm around a sinister glow. Shortly afterward, the spray was applied to the claw. However, instead of extinguishing the shadowy flame, it was like adding oil to a fire. The Oblivion Claw let out a sound as though it were an angered dragon's roar. The flame effect flickered a little but started to act a little volatile in response to the applied spray. She saw her Miasma Corruption debuff reduce to about a quarter-full amount, but it immediately returned to its halfway point within the next second. While it was apparent that the skill was interrupted for a split second, perhaps the continuous duration of the spell caused it to reignite immediately afterward. Midori herself stretched her arm farther away from her body in response to the angered claw aura, but she did not experience any pain or particular physical discomfort from the effect. The only thing that she felt as though she had heard some kind of voice at the moment the claw was sprayed. An angered voice, telling her to bring corruption to the one who threatened the Miasma's influence. After the skill's duration had worn off, the claw disappeared with a final indignant howl.
"I think it's a good start... I'm not sure whether we should try another skill instead, though."

Lavinia took a deep breath as she prepared to apply the spray to Midori's claw, she really hopes it wouldn't harm her in some way. Completing preparing herself she applies the spray and the claw becomes suppressed for a brief second then flares back to life angrily. Gasping Lavinia takes half a step backwards away from the claw and then looks at Midori hoping it's not causing her any discomfort or anything. The only detectable feeling Lavinia could see is a sense of "get this thing away from me" or like when you shield yourself when that fire your trying to light catches and the to much gasoline you added causes a small fire ball to explode from the wood from Midori. Lavinia continues to watch carefully until the spell subsides in a angry roar. "Well, that was a bit scary...". Lavinia made a note to not piss off a Heretic after seeing this.
Lavinia was convinced Midori was okay, maybe a bit caught off guard by the violent reaction but still willing to progress with experiments on the claw, until she commented at least. "Use a different skill, why did something odd happen? You okay, did that feel strange? Was there any pain, any odd sensations or feelings? We can quit at any time if your having second thoughts." she said concerned and curious but said it rather a bit to quickly. Lavinia didn't want to put Midori into any situation she really didn't want to be in and wanted to be careful not to force her if she didn't realize she was being to pushy. Lavinia thought that claw skill would be their best option for testing. It's duration would allow time for careful application of stimuli and it's cooldown would give time to take proper notes. Ether way, Lavinia wrote down this portion of the notes from her observations and any extra information Midori would provide about it from her point of view. Done with her notes she turns to Midori kind of excited to see what she had in store next and unless Midori had a better idea another application of the spray on this new spell would be next. Lavinia hoped it wouldn't have quite a reaction as before for Midori's sake. So far Lavinia's impression of the girl was that she seemed rather timid, why such a girl would pick Heretic for their class was beyond her reasoning. Maybe she had a lust for power, Lavinia wondered why...
"So, what other skill did you have in mind then?"

"I'm not sure... I thought I heard an angry voice coming right from the claw itself." Midori placed a finger to her lower lip and tapped her face lightly as she paused in thought. "It's just that the skill itself doesn't seem like something that's cancelled by the spray. It's like sales tax in a sense, you can buy as much or as little as possible but it'll always be applied afterward." That metaphor makes no sense in the current context, Midori. Who do you think you're talking to, Des? Midori made a light frown toward the writer's comments as she continued to think of another idea. "There's other skills that add Miasma directly so we can probably try them afterward." she opened up the menu and scrolled through the skill list.
There were a couple skills which had such a description. Gluttonous Haze didn't raise Corruption but it was a self-target skill. There were others like Tainted Charity and Lying Darkness which did such a thing. Lying Darkness in particular had a rather interesting description but she was slightly worried about using it on herself. As she was currently in a residential area, the ability for players' skills and combat can be manually disabled by the homeowner, but she was quite worried about what she could possibly do if she were to turn "mad" from the skill effect. And yet, she was rather curious. It was pretty much the reason why she had chosen to switch to the Heretic class in the first place. There were other people who used the class set as an excuse to either raise havoc or dominate fear into others' minds, but here the scientist-at-heart followed the path because it seemed rather interesting to dabble in. Perhaps she would try it later but she would need to warn the other girl in advance.
"Actually, there's another way to use this skill." she pressed a hotkey to access her inventory, and a red-sheathed sword appeared in front of her. The little magician pulled the midnight blue blade from the scabbard and pointed it at a forward angle, away from most of the objects in the room. She didn't know if using the skill again would've caused the weapon to go out of control, after all. Just in case, she would wield the blade with both hands to prevent it from toppling over should the aura otherwise cause any sort of physical interference. Midori whispered the skill's name and held the sword tightly as the violet aura materialized. This time, it was not enveloping her arm as before, but rather covering the weapon like a violet flame.
