"Any treasure you obtain without ever having to work for it is no treasure at all."
|
People could be so self centred sometimes, Jacoben mused as he heated up his furnace for a day of crafting, so sure of their own importance that any inconvenience towards others was automatically dismissed from their mind. He had just received an order for some fine glasses that had to be completed within 24 hours in preparation for a party that was to be thrown very soon. It wasn't the sort of task that would be easy for a single Artisan to do, but Jacoben was determined to get a set of the glasses to the commissioner within the time limit.
Technically making something like a glass goblet required at least two people (or four arms) but the little Foxtail would have to make do. Dressed up in the appropriate protective gear he began to funnel sand into the appropriate crucible, the fine powder rather expensive and used for higher quality glass than he usually produced, considering his lack of experience in glasswork. Still, he would have to learn how to use it eventually and no time like the present. With the furnace at the right temperature he picked up the heavy stone container with a pair of large tongs and gently placed it amongst the superheated coals.
Glass would come from this soon enough, he only had to wait for the sand to become molten under the heat of his furnace, allowing him to manipulate it with tools and his own breath to become a proper 'Dinner Glass' as requested by his customer. And then he'd need to do it again, and again.

As the sand melted into glass Jacoben gathered his tools, the various implements required to make glass by hand placed close to the furnace so that he wouldn't lose valuable time by having to go back and forth every few moments to reheat the glass. Propping open the lid of the crucible, Jacoben gathered a large lump of molten glass and lifted it up and out of its container, spinning the blowing pipe to ensure that it didn't slip off the pipe and waste the glass. He closed the lid of the crucible once more and moved over to the side of the furnace where the 'glory hole' was situated, spinning the glass on the end of the pipe as he did so in such a fashion that gravity shaped it into a reasonably spherical orb.
The Artisan stuck the glass back into the furnace for a few moments, turning it and watching it with keen eyes before removing it once more and bringing the pipe to his lips. A little bit of air blown down the metal tune saw the glass bulge, each small burst of air hollowing it out a touch further as he pushed it into its correct size. Jacoben then heated it once more to further smooth the glass out, swinging the pipe around and picking up a wet piece of rawhide and placing the near-molten glass onto it. With a curve of his hand he was able to roll the orb around on the wet hide and get a nice smooth curve on it.

Gathering up another glob of molten glass Jacoben carefully placed it on the now cooling hollow glass orb he had created, quickly snipping it off and spinning the glass around to ensure that it didn't fall off. With tongs he carefully shaped the new piece of glass into an elegant stem that not only looked pretty but also aided in the bearer's grip. The last thing he wanted was his work to be broken by a clumsy diner.
Another generous heaping of glass became the base of the stem, the blowpipe and the burgeoning dinner glass returning to the fire several times to ensure that everything was in order. Once he was done with this Jac gathered up a small amount of glass on a different pipe and pressed it against the base of the stem, allowing him to cut the top off of the glass and switch it to the new pipe. With this he was able to soften the cup of the glass and work it with deft and careful movements, widening it out and softening the edge to prevent any sharp edges that might cut someone drinking from it.
Cutting off the now complete glass the Artisan carefully placed it in the large annealer, a furnace specifically designed to allow the glass to slowly cool to room temperature (made faster by the wonders of magic). With the first glass completed, Jacoben began to gather more glass on the end of his blowpipe to begin a second glass, he still had a lot of work ahead of him and he wanted to get it done.

Tail waving from side to side in contentment Jacoben continued his work, sweat beading on his brow as the heat of the furnace began to effect his adventurer's constitution and the day's labours began to effect his arms. Now that he had made the first glass it was easier to make another, dual-toned eyes watching the glass carefully to make sure that he replicated the feat properly. It was unfortunate that he couldn't speed craft this particular design, but he supposed that was becoming more and more common as time went on.
This world was becoming more realistic, so it made sense that objects that didn't exist prior would require more realistic levels of effort to craft. Losing himself in the glow of near-molten glass and the actions of shaping and smoothing it Jacoben began to wonder about the party he was supposedly helping to supply.
Why did this chef need it so much? And why had he waited until the last moments to contact the small Artisan for glasses? Perhaps it was just a case of not enough items and no one else to turn to, after all if he'd wanted Jacoben's craft to begin with he would have contacted the Foxtail much earlier. That was probably it, someone broke some of the glasses and new ones had been needed asap. Thus decided, he cast the thought from his mind and continued his craft, shaping and blowing and cutting the glass as he made another glass for the chef and so fulfil his commission.
Who knew how many he'd be able to make.
