Drinking is not for everyone—even an illustrious pseudo-leader of the ghost of a guild called Avarice, who looked as posh and noble as royalty, could never have been more obviously quite the lightweight. Shira and his adopted pet cat—I mean, a friend he offered a bed within the guild, Aura, stopped at what could possibly be the most roughhoused “restaurant” he’d ever seen. It was quite lively, which was nice, but in a sense that it was a band of drunk men whose merry energy may turn merrily violent at the slightest provocation. Well... at least it didn’t look too dirty... about 59% clean...

“Must I? There are drinks at home, you know,” Shirayuki pleaded. The whole plan and the reason why they were here was “to celebrate a grand reopening” with grand being the equivalent of meagre. At least, they snagged one member: A very quiet girl named Amaryllis who spoke in private messages. It raised the total of the guild’s population to two official active members and one extravagant drunk blonde boarder. What ecstatic company. Now if only Shira did more to increase the guild’s reputation rather than fuss over the sudden hiatuses of his friends.

“You never leave the house!” replied Aura.
“And why am I the only one who needs to drink? You didn’t even invite Amy!”
“Well she said something about perusing the library for maps or some such. Besides, this will be fun I promise. All you have to do is pay off my tab first and then we’re onto a grand escapade of debauchery and gastronomical adventure!”
“... If you say so, I guess. Wait a minute! Just how much did you—“
“Eyyyyy~ Bar-ten-derrrrr~!”

Without warning, he was shoved into the establishment. The moment the doors burst open, a great gust of alcoholic wind mixed with the scent of heavy testosterone and sweat met the Fox Tail’s sensitive nose. Immediately, he regretted even considering coming here. The best that the silver fox could do was save face and at least try to look like nothing bothered him. He half expected something like this because well... it was Aura, and thus he chose to wear something more humble: a simple leather furred jacket and his favourite scarf.

She beckoned to the seat she pulled, as if a gentleman seating his lady. Isn’t this supposed to be the other way around? He sat with a polite curtsy to his “date,” even though he was slightly blushing due to the fact that he was being treated as a lady. Aura went off to go chat up the bartender; probably about her debt. Shira shuddered to think how much he was going to have to pay for their drinks now and the rest of their drinks later. Their budget could only handle so much.

Aura returned with a hearty tray of mugs with frothing mead. She didn’t look as excited as she was earlier, however. In fact, she seemed almost kind of sheepish. Shira’s stomach turned to knots as a foreboding omen of something heartbreaking. Aura plopped the tray onto their table and smiled coyly, watching him expectantly as he partook in what was probably the first time he consumed alcohol.

“Something’s wrong, is there...” he said with utmost suspicion.
“Not at all~ Not at all~ Now drink up~”

Not daring to take his eyes off his blonde [slave] [ball-and-chain] friend, he took a tentative sip of the strong-smelling beverage. He resisted the ever-so-strong urge to turn away and gag; it was important that he maintain composure as to not humiliate himself. The strong, bitter coolness touched his tongue and made him momentarily turn his gaze to the liquid in this mug. That was nasty... He turned back to Aura and shot her a questioning glare that said ‘Are you sure about this?’ She simply nodded and gestured at him to advance the drinking ritual.

“Just make sure you chug it down fast, by the way,” she said with a sly grin. At least, she, a very experienced master in the arts of drunkery, had given him some parting advice. He’d already gone this far, he might as well do as she recommends. The sooner this was done, the sooner he could take them somewhere nicer.

With his mental fortitude sound and ready, he took the largest swig he had ever done in his life. If the little drop that fell upon his tongue was bad, the entire thing down his throat was worse. The worst, even. The foul liquid violated his insides with a warm stinging sensation and a very dense bitter-sweet taste. With all his might, he struggled to down the mead to the last drop, Aura cheering enthusiastically at the sidelines. He slammed the empty mug on the table, the urge to wipe the taste off his tongue was strong but stronger was the numbness and fuzziness he felt soon after.

“You did it! Mister, I... made a man... out of you~!” she exclaimed with beaming pride. Shira turned to her with an absolutely mortified expression though it was much softer than he failed to notice. As the alcohol worked its way into his system, he found it more difficult to tell his body what to do. What he wanted to do now was to give Aura a good talk about how horrible she was for making him do this. With a rosy hue to his cheeks he uttered:

“Y-y-y-you.... *groan* bad... *hic* driiiiiiii... *hic*”
“Seriously? After one glass?” she replied, ignoring his remarks completely.

Oh how he would have loved to summon a golem right now. He gingerly raised his hand in preparation of a slapping motion. For some reason, he felt as if he was moving through syrup as his hand sluggishly missed Aura’s cheek entirely. The blonde, though she foresaw it happening, didn’t even need to dodge the attack. Cheekily, she slid another mug to her landlord as she held another of her own in her hand.

“It gets better, I promise. Cheers!”
“You beeeeeet— *hic* Ter! Be right...”

His concern over his dignity became tainted by some subconscious desire to consume more. I have to drink... or else I’ll look like a silver-spoon-fed preen and embarrass the guild’s name. Firmly grasping the mug’s handle, he chugged another glass, finding it somewhat easier to do now that his tongue was numb all over. The burning in his esophagus was as stinging as the first but now that he expected it, the experience wasn’t as jolting.

The two slammed their mugs on the table and let out a satisfied (that it was over, in Shira’s case) “Ah~!” Seizing the opportunity of Shira’s inebriation, Aura began to talk in a more subtle, gentle tone: the kind that’s usually only used when asking one’s parents an advance on their allowance.

“I have a funny story to tell you, haha. You may love it, you may not, but most likely we’ll all have a good chuckle at how funny it is. Hehe... he... Soooooo...”

As she began to regale him the tale of how she came to owe 2000 gold’s worth of beverages and food, which was the remainder when she partially paid it off some time before, Shira was feeling incredibly lightheaded. The sounds of the pub melded into a mumbling jumble of inaudible rabble, as if the noises were coming from a radio with a defective speaker. His field of vision grew narrow; his focus limited to only one person at a time. Unfortunately, that person’s story of how she had to be a plant’s errand girl so that she could pay for a date with an illustrious white-haired bachelorette princess—or whatever it was—didn’t register properly in his head.

Shira neither knew what she was talking about nor did he care; the sluggishness he felt physically and mentally made the rosiness of his cheeks spread to his entire face, making him look like a Princess of Bubblegum. The rest of his focus was being particularly interested in Aura’s upper torso. Damn she’s healthy. She must really work out a lot. And that leather vest! MM-mm! Luscious yet rough and rustic; just what an adventuress needs. Oh look! The brand icon looks just like mine! Now there is an artisan with good taste.

The rest of the night was a blur though rampant drinking and the promised debauchery were profoundly evident. The last thing he remembered was an equally intoxicated Aura mumbling something incoherent but should most definitely an important notable mention:

“We are going places, my friend! Puh-lay-sas~ Show’em what Avarice is all about~!”

What followed was different sounds altogether: loud slamming of doors, something breaking, subtle “poof” noises and magical sparkles. Shira was assured that they wouldn’t be breaking any big laws—not that there were any. The magic of this night was something he would either remember forever or not at all—or maybe even not remember, but shall trace his footsteps if he somehow woke up with a tattoo or something. Who knows? What happens in Londinium, stays in Londinium—or at least just around this dingy part of town.
