Every now and again Fletcher would look to the bed to check up on Carbuncle, hoping that he wasn’t making too much noise. While yes, a dismissal of his Follower would solve that problem, he just couldn’t bring himself to do that to the fox now that it looked so comfortable. He tinkered away quietly, prying parts off the old lamp and finding replacement parts amongst the debris he had now poured onto the floor. Sadly, he had nothing that would replace the glass, but that for the most part would be fine if he was careful; after all, he was fuelling this thing with magic, not fire, so the chances of burning oneself shouldn’t be too high.
Humming quietly to himself he took an old rag and started polishing up the metal as best he could to at least make it more presentable. The other benefit of doing so would be to reveal any flaws in the framework before committing to the project. If it had to wait to the following morning in order to finish it off, he would, but he was spurred on by a bout of insomnia he just couldn’t shake. As he polished away, Fletcher found himself reminiscing about old times before he had become a Summoner. It all seemed so odd that he managed to adjust so well given the sudden increase in pace of his life prior to it all happening. His mind wandered to his wife and daughter, both resting peacefully somewhere, free of pain and strife of the living world. It wasn’t much of a victory, but it was one that he claimed all the same.
As for him, he was also free from pain but there was still a lingering emptiness that followed him around; an emptiness that he had to this point been filling with Carbuncle’s company. It was the same as projecting one’s feelings onto their pet dog, although with what Carbuncle could do and what it stood for, Fletcher found himself unsure as to what to think when it came to the fox. He set the lamp aside and looked out the window into the street below. It was quiet and still, as if he were the only person left on the planet. Even the usual noise from downstairs had ceased, a sign that it truly was late if everyone had gone to bed in a tavern that sometimes hosted guests until the early hours of the morning.
Turning back to his lamp he picked it up and smiled softly to himself. ”Let’s finish you up and head to bed.”
