LIFE IS A TRICK
and you only get one chance to learn it
For the second time that day, Ria found herself striding down the road out into the Windsor Greatwood. It was a bit strange to walk the same path since she’d never actually returned the first time. Well, she was determined not to be so stupid this time around. It was too bad that she’d had to learn that lesson the hard way. Still, she wouldn’t be forgetting it anytime soon. Pain certainly was an effective teacher. However, as she stood staring off the path, Ria couldn’t help feeling somewhat anxious. It was unlikely that she would be able to make it through the day entirely unscathed, even if she was determined to keep any further damage limited to flesh wounds. With that thought in mind, Ria decided that it would be prudent to upgrade her armor as soon as she could. It would be cool to have more powerful swords, but protecting her body would have to come first.
Realizing that she was putting off the inevitable, Ria flipped open her menu and navigated over to her Pathfinding skill page. There was only a single skill listed, but it would certainly be useful in this situation. She toggled on the Battle Perception skill and glanced around. While she normally she couldn’t see any signs of monsters in the vicinity, with her enhanced perception Ria was able to see that there were several Young Pittered Boars a short distance from the roadside.
“We’ve got a couple of boars over there,” she said quietly to Pureblade, “The weaker ones, so we should be fine. Still, let’s try to be quiet so we can get the jump on them, eh?”
With that thought in mind, Ria left the path and made her way into the woods. When she was a bit closer, she paused to analyze the situation further. There were three of the boars and due to the skill she had activated; two of them were level one while the third was a level two. This shouldn’t be too bad at all.
Not wanting to drain her MP more than was necessary, Ria flipped open her menu and toggled off the Battle Perception skill. Now that she’d gotten the information she required, there was no point in keeping the skill activated. Besides, she found the name and level which appeared over the monsters’ heads to be somewhat annoying. Despite the easy looking nature of the fight, it would still hurt if one of the monsters managed to get in a solid hit. A strategy wouldn’t go amiss either, even if it was a bit on the simple side.
“You’re a Summoner, right?” she asked her companion in a whisper. “You want to summon up whatever it is you’ve got and then we can get this show moving? I’m thinking that you can hang back a bit while your creature and I move in to the front.”Her swords would likely do much more damage to the pigs than Pureblade’s staves, so it made more sense for her to take point. Besides, even though he had been willing to join her, Ria still was hesitant to throw the boy into danger, even if their enemy wasn’t exactly formidable. Although she didn’t yet have a firm grasp on the game’s tactics, even she knew that magic classes generally weren’t frontline fighters.
Motioning towards one of the weaker boars she added, “We can go for that one first; its back is to us so we should be able to take it down quickly. Once it’s down, we can move on to the others. Two of them are only level one and the remaining boar is level two, so yep, this should be a boar.”
Ria regretted having to use a similar pun twice in such a short time, but she had to admit that it was just so easy to fall back on boar puns. Still, she’d have to come up with something a little better. There was a great expanse of pig related humor out there, even if she couldn’t come up with anything at this exact moment. For a moment she was tempted to hold off the assault until she came up with something better, but then Ria realized that once again she was procrastinating. Mentally she chided herself to pull it together; she was going to have to focus when the fight began.
Flashing a grin, Ria said,“If you’re ready, let’s go bop ‘em on the head. If we’re lucky, maybe we’ll be able to pick up a little bacon. If we do, I know a guy that might be willing to fry it up.”
