The time had come.
Tehm was tired of stepping in every muddy puddle, being caught off balance on every slick patch of stone that he came across. Although his new world provided him a level of perception he could have only dreamed of on earth, it was not without its limitations. In some ways his abilities were more than eyesight, he could detect moving objects almost magically regardless of the orientation of his head or the presence of obfuscating objects. In other regards though, it left much to be desired. Although he could infer that the rectangular object over a doorway was a sign, whether it was made of wood or iron, painted or blank, escaped him. He needed a cane. No... a staff, that was the weapon on which all of Tai Shing Pek Kwar was based, the weapon of the legendary monkey king, Sun Wukong.
Tehm mused that he had no idea how to actually use a staff in combat, but then, he didn't really know monkey fist yet either.
(One thing at a time...)
Traveling slowly through the open-air stalls of the merchants, tehm carefully noted the types of wares each vendor had lain out.
"Excuse me, miss? How much for a broom?"
The lady, <Alice>, stared at him a moment before answering, but was willing to sell it to him. She must have wondered what a sorry adventurer such as he could have wanted with a broom, or if he was able to pay for it, but tehm still had his "starting gold" that all new adventurers begin the game with so minor items such as this were not a major expense.
Stopping at the stall of a woodworking supplies vendor, tehm picked up the best looking level 10 handsaw and carving knife they had available along with a large supply of level 1 sandpaper of varying grits.
Tehms last purchase wiped out the last of his starting gold, but it was a necessary cost. A potion to change his crafting class from brewer to woodworker.
Tehm doubted he'd ever have use of a crafting subclass in the future, but at some point he would want to construct shelter, and woodworking should provide him a magical means of turning a small amount of wood into serviceable furniture.
(Now about that stick...)
Walking to a secluded corner, tehm sat down on the grass, back to the heavy stone wall and began sawing the broom head off of of the long handled broom about 4" up, leaving a straight dowel approximately 1" in diameter and 5' 8" long. Taking one of the roughest pieces of sandpaper he'd purchased, he set about rounding the cut end to match the top...
After he was finished, tehm turned the sandpaper towards the length of the stick, moving on to finer and finer grits until the stick felt as smooth as he thought he could manage.
Standing up, and walking a few paces away, tehm gave a test swing of the stick and found it was much more rigid than the staves he had seen used for his art.
It would have to do for now, but this wasn't something he could use in combat. Were he to strike the rod on a tree he imagined it would shatter like so much kindling with little resistance.
Taking his new staff in hand, tehm set forth for the forest.
