“Any object, wholly or partially immersed in a fluid, is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. “ Bailin mumbled as he wrote the line down on his chalkboard, “In short, floating capacity is equal to the weight of the fluid that is being displaced. As such a one kilogram metal bar would displace one kilogram of water. As a metal bar is a lot denser it would sink. A wooden bar however might actually float though it has a less dense than metal. However, if we were to take either a metal sheet or a wooden plank, they would both float. Or at least, that’s the idea, things remain: wood floats a lot easier than metal, though we could try to make a metal ship at some point. But I suppose it would be best to try the first one with wood and later work on the metal one. “Bailin said, theorizing on how to make a ship float, whilst he was sketching the first prototype on his chalkboard. It resembled a small rowing boat, large enough to fit in four people and a small mast. [break][break]
“The principles remain the same, the weight, surface and density should be smaller than the density of the water surface. In terms I can understand myself, I suppose the larger the surface that is on the water, the more weight it can carry. However if we were to make it into a gentle v-shape, the ship could be lowered into the water for a little bit when a lot of weight is put on to it. Add some oars and rudder so one could actually steer and a mast to be able to rest the oarsman a bit. Or we could make it a near flat bottom and make the hull a tad longer, spreading out the density, rather than use it to displace more water and keep us afloat. I wonder how the others feel about it…” Bailin said as he prepared the rest of the house for the arrival of his guests.[break][break]

He was nervous, that was for certain, unsure of himself even as he turned down the street and made his way towards the location that had been in the letter he had received. It seemed that someone had passed on his proficiency with wood to another who had invited him to this location to be part of a project to build a boat, and the Foxtail Artisan had been intrigued enough to agree to the proposition. Uncertain of where he would be working and what supplies would be there he carried a box full of tools, and he had done research on the subject before today, making sure he had a good grasp of the concept even without the assistance of his access to the game database on the topic.
Still, now that he was here he was starting to regret giving the affirmative, his nervousness taking over from his previous excitement about the project. Gritting his teeth the young man stopped at the door, double checked his minimap to make sure he was in the right place, and then knocked on the door. He was going to do this whether his screwed up anxieties wanted him to or not. Building a boat would be a wonderful experience and if he could master the skill then not only would he be able to provide a profitable skill but he might be able to actually go and see if the Isle of Mann and Ireland existed in this world like he had been talking about with Zyrune.
While he waited for the person who had decided to undertake this joint crafting venture Jacoben considered their options for a water vessel. They'd need to make something small at first, a proof of concept as it were that would give them the basic skills of crafting before they tried to do something more ambitious. Personally Jacoben would like to try to make a Viking Longship as their first vessel, as he thought that was the best option. Such a ship was ideal for their level, not too large nor quite as complicated as the sailing ships of the later part of the previous millennium. Beyond that the longship was capable of sailing both in the open seas and upriver with equal ease, it was also capable of being propelled by sail and oar, which gave it a level of versatility ideal for a group of Adventurers looking to explore the Unfounded Kingdom.
Additionally, the unique nature of such ships would undoubtedly help them when it came to simpler techniques of crafting that came with the ships of the old European Empires. A longship was in some ways simpler and in others more complex than something like a Schooner or Galleon style sail ship. Still, he wasn't the only craftsman involved in the project so he would have to discuss it with whomever else was involved and then they could take it from there to come to a final decision.
When the door was opened to reveal the host of this venture Jacoben would nod his head slightly in greeting and say in a rather awkward and shy manner, "Ah, hello. I'm Jacoben, the Artisan who you asked to come and help with your ship building project. I wasn't sure if we were starting straight away, so I brought my tools.... I hope that isn't a problem?"

Pyramus moved down the streets of Londinium with swift, long strides. He had spent far too much time at the market center, flirting with the Lander girls tending to the stores. Entranced by the beauty of the women, it was no wonder that he failed to realize the time. Of course, he wasn’t exactly late, rather than simply running a little behind schedule. Still though, a quick pace to make it there as early as possible would be preferred.
His destination was the housing district near the Londinium Riverside. Someone must’ve gotten in their head the desire to go sailing, for they had the plans to build a boat. That someone must’ve also needed desperate help as Pyramus had been invited to assist in the creation of the sea vessel. For the Elf Woodcrafter, the idea of creating a boat didn’t seem especially unattractive, especially due to the chance to improve his own crafting skills, so he had accepted the offer after a brief contemplation. He was very low leveled in his Woodcrafter subclass, due to his lack of focus on it, so he wasn’t sure how much he could do, but hopefully he could help. If he was correct, he was there only as an assistant and would mostly be supporting a more experienced, skilled main crafter. Nevertheless, it was a rare opportunity, one Pyramus was certain to not pass up.
By his side, he carried a small box of simple tools. They were all low-leveled rudimentary objects that would hardly impress any professional. To the amateur craftsman, they were his life and soul. Their numbers and quality were few and low, respectively, but it was all he had as well as all he needed. At least, they were better than when he started out crafting by using his spear as a knife. Those were not good days.
As he continued to zig-zag through the usual Londinium crowd, more numerous and denser than a swarm of flees, he couldn’t help but begin to fantasize about the to-be ship. The boat itself was not the subject of his imagination rather than the activities one could do with it. A romantic date over a lake surface, secluded from land and people, sounded thrilling and exciting. The crystal surface of the water, reflecting the clear blue skies above, gave way to the wooden vessel as the lovers onboard faced each other. The golden rays of the sun allowed the two to be reflected in the eyes of their beholders. It was a perfect, location to take a lady. He swore to build one of his own, after this venture.
Finally, Pyramus seemed to reach his destination. In front of the designated dwelling, he saw a Foxtail man standing, facing the door.
“Ah, hello there, gentlemen. Hope I’m not too tardy. Good to be working with y’all.”

“Greetings, I do not have any qualms with you bringing your own tools to the project, especially as I lack the skills and equipment regarding carpentry. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance Jacoben, my name is Bailin and I welcome you to my humble home. It would also appear our second guest is arriving as well, which I would call a perfect timing.” Bailin said to Jacoben as Pyramus came trotting about. [break][break] “And greetings to you as well, welcome to my humble home, I am Bailin. If both of you would be so kind as to follow me to my study annex bedroom annex arsenal, I have already started some basic drafts and principles we should take into account.” Bailin spoke, leading both adventurers to the room with the chalkboard. [break][break] “Well now gentleman, as you all can see, the principle we should focus on is the principle of buoyancy, or as I would prefer to reference to it: the principle of how things float. As we will attempt to construct a ship we should look at the following things: the general weight of the ship, the tension of the water as well as the tension produced by the ship in the water; and the tension produced by a loaded ship. What I’ve theorized is that if we have a larger surface on the water we can carry a lot more. However, I also suppose that if we displace more water, we could also carry more. In short: we would like a ship with a large surface as well as a certain depth, to maximize the carrying capacity of the ship. Personally I suppose a ship with a width of about two or three meters and a depth of about one meter, upper rail to lowest point, would suffice. The length should be around four or five meters and I suppose we could make it a sailing vessel, though I suppose a rowing ship will also suffice. What do you two think? Can we do it? Does this all sound logical?” Bailin explained and suggested to his crafting compatriots.[break][break]

Jacoben nodded in greeting to Pyramus before entering Bailin's home at the Mechanic's request, following the Mechanic to the room that they would be doing their preparations in. Listening quietly but intently to the other's thoughts on the matter, the Foxtail Artisan almost fell back into his old habits of simply nodding and saying 'yes' to everything that he was told. But he was determined that he was going to change his attitudes, and that meant having a spine and actually speaking up when he had something to say rather than be a yes-man all the time.
"Umm, I'm not much for the science of the crafts I do, even though I'm certain there's applicable theories and explanations, but what you're saying makes sense for the most part," Jacoben began nervously, steeling his nerves so that he didn't just give up and return to his usual attitude, "I was thinking we should try and emulate the Norse ships, get a feel for how to make them in that design so that we could go towards a proper longship in the future. Such vessels would probably be the most versatile kind of ship that we could create, with their shallow draft allowing them to be used in the rivers but sturdy enough to cross the open sea as well."
Here he paused, pulling out a stick of chalk that he had made and gestured questioningly to the blackboard in order to ask permission to use it. Assuming it was given he would move towards it and continue to speak. "When the project was brought up initially I did as much research as I could with the limited resources I had access to and was able to work out the basic ideas behind the design. If we went for a small boat, about two meters wide, we're looking at around nine meters in length since the smallest Norse ships apparently used a 4.5:1 ratio." here the Foxtail began to sketch out dimensions, showing the general shape such a small vessel might have to take while maintaining the basic form of a longship.
Adding a cross section of the way that the interior was generally meant to be shaped, he turned back to the other two to continue speaking before he turned it over to whoever else wanted to have a say. "With this sort of design we can practice both oared and sail equipped vessels and begin to see how such ships function practically, since even something in the range of nine meters long is capable of having a decent sized sail. It's a bit ambitious of course, since Longships are designed rather differently to other vessels, but I think it's worth the effort if we can get something versatile enough to be used in a myriad of situations.
Having said his piece the Artisan put away his chalk and stepped away from the board, looking between both Bailin and Pyramus to gauge their reaction to his suggestion. It could turn out that one or both of them rejected his thoughts on the direction of the project, but he supposed he should be happy with himself just for being able to voice them rather than being the passive puppet he so often turned out to be. If nothing else he had been able to demonstrate that he had been able to do so much better than usual by coming here and interacting with strangers more confidently than he had before. Perhaps when he told Tadashi about it he would be proud of the way that the small Sorcerer was trying to improve himself.

“Nice place…”
Pyramus thought as he headed into Bailin’s housing, after exchanging quick greetings with the two other men. He followed the supposed house owner into his study/bedroom/arsenal and was generally impressed with the interior design. It was his first time visiting an adventurer owned house, as he did not have the funds to do so himself, nor did he have any friends that did either. He had settles himself with living in one of Londinium’s many inns, spending his money on better armor and weaponry, as well as plenty of lavish gifts to flatter his lovely female acquaintances with. However, looking at his host’s luxurious abode, he began to reconsider the use of his finances.
“How much would a house like this cost, to begin with? If I start saving up a little after each hunt, I might be able to scrap enough… Wait, was that a watermill outside!?”
While Pyramus was still remarking at the details of Bailin’s humble habitat, the aforementioned Mechanic motioned to his chalkboard and began to speak professionally, referencing natural principles that he had prior scribed onto his chalkboard. Though there were a few words that the amateur woodcrafter wasn’t sure if he understood, (He wasn’t exactly the best science student in the real world. His talents were more in the literary department) the general gist of the speech was to explain how he planned to maximize the carrying capacity of the ship. He was almost certain the Mechanic would soon be pulling out a sheet containing the mathematical calculations needed to optimize capacity. If that did happen, he’d have to look at the paper pensively and pretend he understood the moon number written down on it.
After Bailin had spoken, Jacob, the other man in the room and probably the head carpenter in the project, spoke up. Unlike Bailin, the artisan referenced historical models of ships from the real world rather than scientific principles. He apparently had done some research and decided that a Norse Longship was optimal. Of course, his proposed model differed from Bailins, almost double the length of the original proposed idea. There would clearly need to be some sort of consensus between the two differing proposals before they could make a final blueprint for the ship.
Finally now that both of his co-workers had spoken, Pyramus began to feel pressured into speaking himself. Though he didn’t have any proposals himself, mostly since he had come in with nothing but the idea of simply building a boat, it would seem awkward if he didn’t share some sort of input. He’d just have to wing some sort of impromptu dialogue and hope it sounded coherent.
“Well, um… I don’t see anything wrong. I’m not too well versed in buoyancy or ships of yonder lore, but the logic seems sound.” He addressed them, endeavoring to cover his embarrassing lack of knowledge with articulate speech. “I think the Norse Longship design that has been suggested doesn’t seem bad, although I have some uncertainties about the unusual length of the ship. Granted that it may not have as large of a surface area as optimal, I believe that its shape is versatile enough to lend to several situations. As for the matter of a sail, we should probably focus on making a working rowboat first, instead of being overly ambitious. If there aren’t any problems at first, we can always add one later. Overall, I support the idea.”
He had no idea what he just said. The real question, though, was whether they would.

After Bailin had spoken of and explained his intentions the first one to speak was Jacoben. The foxtail produced his own crayon of chalk and started to sketch out his idea, including the required dimensions and ratios needed to create a proper vessel that would actually remain afloat. Jacoben suggested a Norse styled ship, which would mean a long, sleek vessel with a near flat hull and as such a very low draft. The idea as Bailin contemplated as he went along with Jacoben’s explanation regarding the vessel and his reasoning to choose that style was that the long and sleek vessel could sail on both the sea and on rivers, as well as enabling the sailors to use both sail and oar to sail the ship. The ideas and possibilities were good, probably even better than what Bailin himself had thought of and Pyramus voiced out his agreement as well. “I see,” he spoke after Jacoben, “it is indeed more sensible to follow your proposition, even though this is a game, it is still based on England and as such there are, or should be, rather a lot of rivers. A ship with a shallow draft is a lot more interesting than a ship with a deep draft like the larger ships of the later medieval times. I also think that due to the width and length there shall be enough to keep the vessel afloat despite the weight we place upon it, though there will most probably a limit as to what we can place upon the vessel, which would not be that strange, though if we remain with common items I think we should be fine. Well then, shall we proceed with the first stages or shall we contemplate on the larger details; like how do we fasten the planks together? How shall we attach the rudder, oars, sail and mast?” [break][break]

Somewhat surprised that his suggestion had been taken seriously, Jacoben took a few moments to gather himself to respond to the questions that Bailin put forward. "Umm, well, we should probably go through things before starting. Just remember that if we do go through with the longship then we're going to have to relearn everything if we ever want to craft ships from the Age of Exploration, longships have very little in common with galleons and the like," the Foxtail stated cautiously, not wanting the others to get irritated at him in the future if things didn't turn out the way they had wanted.
"Longships don't use what we'd consider a rudder, instead they had a large paddle attached to the right side of the ship, the 'steerboard' if you will," his ears twitched as he turned to add the image to his chalk sketch, showing how the rudder oar was attached to form the equivalent of a rudder for the vessel. That done, he moved onto the most important question Bailin had asked, "in most European ships the keel is laid and then you attach the ribs and build the skin of the ship, but Norse vessels start with the keel and then begin with attaching the main planks immediately with iron rivets, only adding in the ribs later when it's started to be built higher," a new illustration was roughly sketched out on the chalkboard showing the way the overlapping boards or 'strakes' were joined together to form the distinctive Viking hull that was the hallmark of a longship.
He paused for a little bit for the information to be digested by the other two, not wanting to overwhelm them with what he was considering, and also not wanting them to miss something important which might upset them in the future. "I think the oars will need to be connected with something connected to the gunwale rather than leaving an opening in the hull itself. Considering how shallow the draft on a longship we wouldn't want to leave it susceptible to being flooded by leaving openings for the oars. For the mast and rigging though..... I have no idea how to go about with that. All I know is that the Norse created the mast separate from the hull of the vessel, it was able to be removed easily even at sea, and there was only ever one no matter the size of the ship. The sails were square too, but beyond that I haven't even the slightest clue where to start to interpret how to set up a proper sail for that kind of ship. Not that I know how to rig any other kind of ship of course.... oh but I'm babbling." He cut himself off with a slight gasp of shock as he realised he had veered away from the relevant information and stopped providing anything useful to the other two.
"Um... that's all I really have to say about that. Sorry for taking too much time talking," he apologised, his tail drooping slightly as he stepped away from the chalkboard and waited for directions from the man who had started this project to begin with. While he definitely was more senior than Pyramus in this project, he wasn't comfortable trying to take charge, and Bailin seemed more the intellectual type who could actually pull everything together to make a decent finished product.

“What’s a keel? What’s a gunwhale!?”Pyramus was a moment of consideration away from voicing his ignorance, which probably would’ve been met with disapproving glances from his compatriots. Luckily, he had some sort of sense in him to not look like an idiot. As the meeting proceeded into the technicalities of the boat-building, the amateur woodcrafter felt more and more alienated. He knew that planning beforehand was important, but his body was already rejecting the knowledge and ready to just start building something. “Still, what is a gunwhale? Is it like a whale? With guns!? That would make an awesome movie: some Japanese Monster flick like Gunwhale vs. Moby Dick. But why would you put a whale on a boat? Would it even fit inside the boat? In fact, which idiot decided it would be a good idea to give a whale guns? They’re hard enough to kill already…”
Pyramus didn’t have long to continue pondering the identity of the elusive Gunwhale as the Foxtail Artisan continued to speak. He had begun to scratch down a few notes, grabbing some prepares sheets of paper he had stuffed away in his toolbox. Considering the amount of technical terms being thrown around, he’d soon run out of brain space to keep track of them all. He jotted down anything that seemed important or anything he didn’t really understand in order to get a general idea of what his senior crafter was babbling about. By the time the Sorcerer had finished, his note paper had the general ideas scratched onto it: - Norse Longship-Viking

Having his completed notes, Pyramus nodded to himself, satisfied. For now, he should probably just stay in the shadows and continued listening to the other two. As Bailin listened to Jacoben’s explanation on what and how he intended to create the ship Bailin remained silent, nodding on occasion in agreement as he tried to picture the process bit by bit. He himself was vaguely familiar with the ships, yet the detail Jacoben offered was far greater than Bailin himself could offer and possessed, which made it an apparent good thing he came to assist in the creation of the ship. “I see, so in short, we should have you fine gentlefolk create the boarding, planks, oars and mast, whilst I will procure the bolts to fasten said items together. In regards to the mast, I would suggest we create an extension at the base of the deck. The extension shall be square on the outside but the inside shall be hollow and round as to facilitate room for the mast. We might want to drill a hole near the bottom of the mast and place a wooden peg within it, as to allow the fastening of the mast. Next we should place upon the square rig two rings, which can open and close, within we could place said peg and close the rings, we could probably lock the rings in place with either a proper lock or a simple wooden peg, whichever the both of you’d fancy. Which would have us remaining with the issue of the procurement of the sail. I know of a small amount of tailors whom could assist us in the matter. However, perhaps either of you is aware of someone who could assist us as well.” Bailin asked of his companions after Jacoben had finished his explanation. [break][break] “I concur the model of the ships is very different, though perhaps the game mechanics would allow us to use the same principles for the ships. Regarding the oars, I suppose we could indeed create some rivets upon the railing to place the oars through, it would free up some rowers or allow for a rotation shift, instead of having people row and empty buckets of water from within the ship. I reckon we have done enough planning and I feel confident we can move onwards to the creation of the ship itself, unless either of you has a certain point they would like to discuss, as you have been rather quiet Pyramus.” Bailin said, wondering if the silent partner had certain points he wanted to voice out, as he had been silent for most of the time. "I know a tailor who might be willing to help, but I'd have to ask," Jacoben responded as his fingers twitched slightly, his sole visible tail swaying behind him in what could only be excitement as the realisation of what they were going to do overcame his social anxieties (the fact that his suggestion had not been shot down helped as well) and he couldn't wait to get to work. He loved his craft, it was easily as interesting and intoxicating as hurling spells around and the sense of accomplishment when he was done was unparalleled. This would be his most ambitious project yet as well, something which was far beyond the scope of what he had done before. Sure he had painted and sculpted, carved stone and threw clay, but any Artisan could do those things, here was a chance to build a boat and that was something special.
He waited to see if Pyramus had anything to say about the endeavour but the Elf seemed disinclined to add to the conversation, seemingly content to let the more experienced crafters lead the project. "We should get started now, if that's alright?" the Foxtail stated, turning to Bailin to get the other male's input, "it's going to take a lot of time to prepare the wood for this, the crafting system has been getting more and more realistic so we're going to have to do each piece at least once the hard way, and in my experience the mass produced things tend to be lower quality, not something we want for our first boat." Which meant they were going to have to individually produce each and every piece of the boat by hand if they wanted everything to be the highest possible quality.
Assuming that Bailin was agreeable to them starting straight away, and also assuming that he had access to the space and materials needed to begin the project, Jacoben would follow the Mechanic to the workshop and began pulling out his tools, placing them on a nearby workbench as he took in the large logs that would eventually form their little practice boat. "I guess we'll get started on the wooden parts of the boat. Bailin, aside from the metal rivets we're going to need some sort of tar for a sealant, preferably a plant based one, as well as loose wool..... I'm not sure if the sealant falls under your crafting class, I've never really talked to a mechanic about crafting...." he trailed off in embarrassment, feeling more than a little bit rude but not knowing the limits of the other crafter's capabilities. Regardless, once they had worked out the basics of what the woodworkers and the mechanic would be doing then Jacoben felt more in his element. They had a design, a plan, and he had the basic skills to succeed at it.
Putting a thick apron over his clothes and tying a bandanna over his hair to prevent woodchips from getting caught in it, or even worse, striking his sensitive ears, the Foxtail also tied another cloth around his neck to cover his face when he needed it. "I think I better make the keel Pyramus, since it's a bit tricky and really important to the rest of the boat, just let me make some measurements and then I'll show you how to make the planks we need and you can work on those," Jacoben stated to the lower levelled crafter, pulling out some rough paper and starting a sketch using charcoal inserted into a stick and a crude ruler to make a scale sketch of the boat they were going to make. "We have to split the logs with wedges into several sections, probably eighths judging by the thickness of the logs we have. After that we use an axe to shape the pieces into planks," he began to explain as he sketched, not wanting the elf to become bored and feel left out of the matter. He was loud enough that Bailin would be able to hear as well, it would have felt very wrong to exclude the Mechanic considering this was his project.
"Once we have the basic shapes a draw knife can be used to smooth it to the right thickness and then prepare it to attach to the boat itself, the Artisan continued as he moved from the now complete sketch to the floor of the workshop. Making use of a length of rope with knots placed at specific points mark off every ten centimetres, Jacoben laid out the rough length of the boat they were going to build on the workshop floor, marking lengths with his charcoal so that he could add the width as well, and they wouldn't accidently dislodge the measurement quite so easily. "Could you grab the wedges there? The small ones and the large ones. You should also grab an axe as well..." he asked Pyramus politely, already taking his own axe to the first log he had chosen to split.
Axe in one hand and a small hammer in the other he began pounding the smile of the blade into the wood down the centre, ensuring a deep enough gouge that the small wedges would have something to press into before they started. Taking the wooden wedge blocks from Pyramus once the Woodcrafter brought them over, Jacoben began hammering them into the log at even intervals, the angle of the blocks widening the gap that he had made so that he could begin to fit the larger wedges into the log. Tapping these wedges in the Foxtail stood and turned to look at the Elf, gesturing towards them with a smile, "here, give it a try. Use the back of your axe and hammer the wedges in as deep as you can, it'll open a split down the centre of the log and we can then put them into the crack that forms. Doing this over and over again will split it nearly clean in half, then we just use our axes to cut away the remaining connections and repeat the process on the halves."
Stepping away from the novice Woodcrafter he waited to watch and see how Pyramus did, ready to help if there was any issues but doubting that the older looking man would have any problems with this particular task. Once he had show the Samurai how to make the planks then he'd be able to work on the keel while Pyramus prepped the strakes, it'd help the Elf learn how to work with wood and free up the more experienced of the two for the more difficult jobs, speeding up the whole process immensely. He couldn't help but wonder just what Bailin was working on though, he'd never seen a mechanic work, and it was rather intriguing for the youthful Foxtail to see how another crafter went about their craft.

I’m lost I realize to myself. how the hell did I get lost. well I am now. so no use thinking about. I think to myself as I approach a big house of someone that seems like a mechanic. I look around and see a semi clean street. with three medium to big size houses. on one side and what seems to be a big workshop on the other side. I go near the workshop to look inside and see a few parts for what I think is a boat and wonder to myself who is working on one. I stop to gather my thoughts and start heading towards one of the houses and knock on the door. as the owner opens the door I see a middle aged lander that seemed confused. he looked at me for a seconds and then asked “what do you want kid” confused about what I want to ask. I respond with “i’m lost sir can you point me in the right direction” he immediately says “get lost adventurer” and shuts the door in my face. “very rude” i think to myself as I walk to the second house and get the same response. while I walk down the street towards the mechanics house I hear noises of excitement from within the house. I get to the door and softly knock on it and ring the bell. After a few moments a slim young looking man with black hair blue eyes and an eye patch opens the door with confusion and asks “yes what do you need sir” I respond almost immediately scaring the young man saying “i’m lost sir could you maybe point me in the right direction” he then looks mildly surprised and invites to come inside his house. once inside I see two other men. one a young fox tail and one a middle aged elf. both sitting near a table and sipping tea. smelling the refreshing smell of earl gray tea. I sit down next to the fox tail and say “I saw your building a boat and that interested me and anyways you will need a blacksmith and I am one so at what point are you if i’m permitted to ask” I say with English grace and politeness. looking surprised the owner doesn't answer but the young fox tail does he answers with a loud sigh followed by “well we will need a blacksmith at some point so I say we tell him” he says. then proceeds to explain to me what they have already prepared. "Ah, sorry. You guys looked like you knew what you were doing so I thought I shouldn't interfere." Raising his hand in in front of his face, Pyramus apologized. Was he being too quiet? He wasn't butting in mostly because he had nothing to say but perhaps it would've been better if he had some sort of input rather than staying silent. It was a social lesson to remember.
"Everything sounds good to me. Gimme a sec to pull out my tools and I'll join you..." At that point, Pyramus realized that he had never gotten the Foxtail's name. He had gotten Bailin's earlier but the Artisan was anonymous as far as he knew. "Sorry about this, I didn't catch your name. I assume you know me as Pyramus."
Afterwards, the Woodcrafter quickly hopped back to his little toolbox, filled with crude rudimentary tools. Carrying it in one hand and pulling out some goggles with the other, to protect his eyes from stray splinters and other dangerous pieces of wood, with the other, he followed the others to their supposed workstation. He didn't mind getting wood chips in his hair or clothes since they could be washed off but getting them in the eye could hurt, though he wasn't sure if it could potentially blind him considering the environment. Nothing trumps caution, though, so might as well prepare in case a quick trip to the cleric doesn't cure wood chip related blindness.
Once inside the workshop, Pyramus casually placed his toolbox on the floor and carefully listened to his senior’s instructions. It’d be pretty bad if he made any mistakes, especially if they had limited materials, so he learned and began to mimic the Artisan’s motions. Taking a couple of wedges and his precious axe, Pyramus, slightly nervous, took one of the logs and attempted to drive a wedge through the wood. One and two and…
“Kh. Too strong.” The woodcrafter grimaced instants after his wrist swung down. Even before making contact with the wedge he was trying to hammer in, he knew he had put too much force into his swing. Perhaps out of beginner’s anxiety, he had used more strength than he had intended. A quick reaction from his mind tried to steady his force and alleviate the power of the swing. Thankfully, this emergency reaction seemed to work as he ended up patting the wedge slightly into the log, giving it a good gouge for the wedge to stand in before he started really driving it in. It was a little deeper than he wanted and a bit rough but nothing disastrous.
The mistake was a valuable lesson though. He had to calm down and measure his muscle strength. This time, he gently, perhaps too gently, started patting the wedge into the log again. Nice simple strokes pounded against the wedge, gradually driving it further and further. Eventually, as Pyramus began feeling confidence over his control, he put more and more strength into his strikes until he was using a normal amount of strength again. Finally, once the log was nearly split in half, he took his axe and completed the cut.
“Alright done…” Pyramus made a sigh of relief as he look at his completed work. Took more effort than he had planned but the first step was made and would be the prelude to many more. He was sweating a little but the feeling of hard work was fulfilling. “If that’s good, I’ll move on to the other ones.” He said, turning to the Foxtail.
While he was working, he hadn’t noticed the arrival of a new face, some other adventurer stumbling in. With warm smile, he turned and greeted the newcomer. “Yo. Hello there. How’s it going? I’m guessing you’re here to help? Come in and join the crew.”

After listening to all whom spoke, as well as letting in the new, lost lamb, Bailin carefully started to formulate a proper response that would entail all of the spoken remarks. First off was Jacoben, the foxtail sorcerer. Jacoben had suggested they get yet another person involved, a tailor, to create the sail. After he had suggested such, he had looked at the others gathered, as if to gauge the reaction on his suggestion before he asked if it was alright to start, adding that it would take a lot of time for the wood to be prepared as he wanted proper quality materials, rather than second rate or worse. A point Bailin had to agree on. The last thing one would want was to be in a sinking ship in the middle of the ocean. Getting wet feet would be an understatement if that were the case. The artisan then started by putting his words into action, requesting something that could function as a sealant from Bailin. The only thing that sprung to mind would be tar or pitch, though perhaps oil would also function… thought the warden as he pondered on the sealant issue. The next step was the explanation on the splitting of the logs, which would be done by the foxtail and elf. After the explanation Jacoben suggested that Pyramus would create the keel and slowly things started to unfold and progress, with Jacoben offering suggestions on each step and part as well as how and when to use what tool. Somewhere along the way came about a blacksmith, by the name of Tzuf. The fellow appeared to be lost and the proper gentleman he was, Bailin let him in. Inside the man noticed Bailin’s companions and the schematics for the ship, at which he pointed out they would be greatly helped with the presence of a blacksmith, something that was not entirely true, but it would save Bailin a lot of his personal stock. The lost person however did not introduce himself at which Bailin held out his hand as a way of greeting and spoke: “I am Bailin, this is indeed my home. Those are Pyramus and Jacoben.” As he pointed to each as he said their name. “As for things you could do, I suppose we could use a lot of metal wedges, screws and nails for starters. Perhaps also some large metal rings through which ropes and, or, oars shall go.” He continued with a gentle smile. [break][break] The other companion to join their adventure was Pyramus, the samurai. Pyramus had actually been rather silent, as if he were brooding on something, though he later explained that he had faith in both Bailin’s and Jacoben’s insights and as such had remained silent. When the time came to go to work he requested to be permitted to take out his tools and joined Jacoben in the working effort. Pyramus himself appeared to be a hard worker and even though he made a little mistake he retook himself and took the lesson out of it. [break][break] “I suppose we could try to use a thick oil based liquid to fill up the minor cracks between the planks, screw said planks together and they should be fine, I presume. Regarding the tailor, I think it would be wiser to get it from a Lander, getting yet another person involved in this endeavor would make things a bit too crowded for comfort. I will start looking for the oil and screws I have lying about.” The Warden spoke as he gestured where he would start looking, whilst his companions were hard at work. [break][break]

"Oil is too thin for the waterproofing, it needs to be a tar-like substance," Jacoben stated as he got to work on making the keel of their boat, his tools beginning to eat into the wood of the keel as he shaped it. "Nails and spacers are good, also the mechanisms for the rigging, I'm not too sure how that would work though..." the young Foxtail added as he worked, looking over the others working on the ship to see what was going on. The strakes that made up the outer section of the ship were coming along nicely and he knew the moment he was done with the keel he would have to start plotting out and creating the ribs of the vessel.
As his adze rose and fell into the wood it began to sound a beat that had him rocking from more than just the motions and soon he was singing softly to himself in time with his strikes, the words low and quiet so as not to draw attention to himself as he worked.
"Seinn an duan seo dhan Innis Àigh, An innis uaine as gile tràigh; Bidh sian air uairean a' bagairt cruaidh ris Ach 's e mo luaidh-sa bhith ann a' tàmh.

Slowly beneath his tools and with the words of the song flowing from his tongue almost inaudibly the Artisan crafted the keel of their boat, shifting from adze to draw knife when it came time to smooth the length of timber into something more resembling a finished product. The singing helped him pass the time and avoid boredom as he worked, it also kept him moving in rhythm without pause for however long it took to make this component. He didn't know how long it took but he would eventually come to a stop and wipe his brow as he stepped back from the finished keel, a proud smile threatening to spread across his face even as he looked around the workshop once more to see what everyone was up to. It seemed that the strakes were well on their way to being done, and a few comments from the more experienced crafter had his assistant fixing up the few mistakes that Jacoben could see forming.
He'd start the ribs soon enough, but he'd take a little time for a drink of water and a break first.

As Jacoben was working steadily and Bailin rummaging through the stacks of supplies of his workplace he found ample supplies of nails, bolts and quite some other interesting and useful items, yet a tar-like substance seemed to be lacking. The thick liquid would prove essential to the creation of the ship, yet they were sorely lacking it, as far as the warden was aware. The only place he hadn’t looked was at Nostro’s alchemy lab. Scratching his beard the warden quickly scurried over to the lab to see what Nostro had been hiding from him. There the warden started rummaging through all the stuff the cat alchemist had left behind before he vanished, just like his friend Oddy and his girlfriend Saskia. The house had become quite quiet, but still, having the whole place to himself was nice as well. Hidden behind some boxes, crates and other alchemical… stuff, the warden managed to dig up a canister of sorts, containing something that might have been tar, or something close to it. Grabbing the canister the warden walked back across the house to the workshop. There Jacoben was busy working on the woodwork and the warden ought it wiser to just put the canister close and not disturb the artisan from his work. Then he went about and gathered more nuts, bolts, nails and other useful things so they didn’t have to spend more time looking for those. The workshop was a small sort of mess, though it wasn’t that odd considering they were building a small ship in a garage. [break][break] |

After he had taken a few swigs from his water bottle Jacoben went over to the container that Bailin had placed near him while he had been working on the keel, opening it up to see if it was useable for them. It wasn't easy for him to work out what exactly the substance was, so he quickly put together a small box out of scrap wood and slathered the joins with the sticky substance, leaving it to dry as he made his way over to the human Warden, his body language surprisingly light and jaunty considering the hard labour of his work.
While he waited for it to dry he wandered over to Bailin to talk with the man.
"We're moving along quite well at this rate, it seems things work a lot faster here than in the old world," the small Foxtail stated with the sort of confidence that he rarely displayed, seemingly in his element as he worked his craft. "We might even be able to begin assembly today depending on how many planks are made and how quickly I can craft the ribs. I was thinking that maybe you would be able to work on making the rigging for the sail? I'm not too sure what would be involved, but no doubt there's mechanisms there that would fall under the mechanic class. Most of what I need to do now is just repetitive stuff, but it's probably going to take a while to work out how to rig the ship properly."
He paused for a moment to take another sip of his water bottle and allow Bailin the chance to speak before he continued. "I'll check to see if that stuff you found is waterproof too, I just need to wait for my test build to finish setting before I can try it out," Jacoben informed the one-eyed male as he stretched out his arms and headed back towards where he was working (assuming Bailin didn't have anything to add to the conversation after that).
It wasn't long before the small artisan was back to work, sketching out and then crafting each of the ribs for the boat even as he called out instruction and advice to his assistant while they both worked on their individual parts of the project. If he were less focused on the task he'd have been surprised at just how outgoing he had been once they had begun to work on the boat, it was almost as if he was in a more casual form f his usual battle attitude. Of course, the minute he noticed that he was acting different than usual he would revert back to old habits, so it was probably for the best that he didn't.
Regardless, they would all continue to work for as long as they could, preparing and completing the individual parts of the boat that they would eventually be putting together. It seemed that some element of the old game system remained as the work continued at a much faster pace than would normally be expected, and chances were all the wooden parts would be done before the day was out, ready to be assembled tomorrow.

Bailin had been a tad surprised by the sorcerer artisan. Jacoben stated that they were progressing rather rapidly, in contrary to the pace they would have had back home, back in the old world. This much was true, however before the warden could respond the sorcerer continued that they could possibly start placing the wooden boards in place on the current day, depending on how many wooden planks he could make. Bailin on the other hand had his hands empty, for now at least, though the sorcerer did not leave him without a task to complete; the warden being instructed to construct the rigging for the sail. [break][break] Silently Bailin decided to start at the task given to him, as the artisan scurried of to do his own tasks. A simple block and tackle would suffice, the oval shape would allow for large ropes to be placed within, yet maintaining a certain strengthening of said rope, as well as decreasing the strain for mere humans to change the length of rope, which would in turn speed up the rate at which the sail could be adjusted. [break][break] He first produced three blocks of wood and shaped those into an oval. The inside piece of wood, which consisted of the third one, was to have several holes as to allow the flow of rope. As he pictured the task at hand he slowly started adjusting the wood to his desired shape with steady, yet gentle, workings of his Warden’s multitool as well as some of the tools present on his workbench. The process took quite some time as he was not a carpenter, nor was he an artisan, yet something with mechanics at its basis seemed to prove no to little challenge, though the end result was left with something to desire when it came to looks. All those involved seemed ready to work as hard as they could for as long as they could and as the day continued onwards they fell into a rhythm, becoming more and more accustomed to the tasks they were completing and so able to work harder and faster to do the same job. Jacoben completed work on the ribs within a few short hours, each piece carved and sanded down awaiting assembly and staining to protect it from the elements.
Taking a step back, Jacoben looked over the collection of pieces laid out before them before glancing outside and noting that the sun had long since gone down. It seemed that they had been working for much longer than he had anticipated. They should probably stop to rest now, if they pushed themselves too hard it was entirely possible that they would make a terrible mistake and have to fix it later, so it was better to stop for now.
"We should get some food," the Artisan called out to the small group as he pulled off his bandana and wiped his sweaty brow. He wasn't sure if they were going to eat as a group, or even what was going to be eaten, but he knew that they needed to step back from the work and try to come back to it with fresh eyes later on.
