Shizu didn't really know what to think about her life at the moment. She wasn't sure what to do, what to think, she was just kinda existing. Its just the awkward time that you get while you wait for something to occur. Shizu wondered what people in this world really were trying to do, maybe just win the game? She decided that one day she would try to find something that interested her. She set out into the town of what she assumed was London, looking to try and examine what the other denizens of this world were doing with their time. She decided that she would try to leave town, even if it meant dying or something of the sort. She knew the combat system of the game Elder Tale, but it was another thing entirely to try and do it with your body and not a keyboard.
Shizu definitely preferred it this way though, the thought of what she could actually do in this world greatly excited her. She couldn't wait to see what she could do when she took the fight to the forces of darkness. She noticed when she logged into the game that she didn't really seem to have a sword, so she would have to try and make do without one. Once she exited town, she got around to thinking, what could she use for a weapon. She saw some sticks on the ground, but they seemed to snap whenever she hit them against anything. She could try and smother them with her coat, but that would take too long and what if the monster didn't need air to breath. She debated trying to mug one of the monster's weapons, but that seemed too dangerous. Eventually luck overwhelmed Shizu as she saw the perfect weapon she could use.
It had a long wooden hilt, one side containing a thin metal blade that was covered in dirt. The other side contained some form of handle, which Shizu didn't really see the point there. She was curious at why someone would leave such a powerful looking axe in some kind of garden. She lifted the axe with pride and swung it around, trying to get the feel for it. Maybe an axe wasn't the best weapon for an assassin, but this one seemed well enough to do for now. She wiped the dirt of the blade and noticed that it was slightly dulled. She made a note that she should try and find a blacksmith to try and fix that later.
After she returned to town, carrying her great axe, she got a few weird looks from the town's inhabitants. Maybe the axe was a rare mob drop and they were impressed that she had managed to acquire it. This gave Shizu a new rush of pride as she made her way through the town, trying her best to show off the new axe to all those around her. Shizu eventually managed to find a blacksmith's forge and went in and placed her axe on the counter. The blacksmith went away from his usual duties to tend the the customer. "Ah, how may I help you miss?" the man asked curious as he looked at the shovel placed on his counter. He figured someone must have just misplaced it there and lifted it to put in the trash. Shizu looked heartbroken and reached to grab the axe before he could. "What are you doing with my axe?" The man now looked more confused and decided to just roll with it. The adventurers were becoming more and more screwy lately, so it made sense that this girl had a few things wrong with her head.
Once her axe was safely back on the table, she looked at him brightly and said, "I want you to sharpen this, as best as you can. I want it to be deadly." She said taking pride in the weapon that she was slowly growing more attached to. The man on the other hand looked even more confused and just lifted up the shovel. "You will pay me right?" he asked concerned about if this girl was that crazy, as to not know how capitalism and the economy works. Shizu nodded quickly and said, "Yeah of course! I can pay up front if you want." she said matter of factly as she was starting to grasp how the money worked in this dream of hers. The man simply sighed and said, "Sure" as he took the money and the shovel into the forge.
After about half an hour, the man returned and handed the shovel to the crazy girl. Shizu was ecstatic to see that she finally had a weapon fit for combat, and took the axe without a second thought. She then put it over her shoulder, like she saw people do in movies, and went to the center of town. There was no indication as to which npcs were quest npcs, but she figured they were definitely there. She decided that she would try to get work the old fashioned way. Standing in the street yelling at the top of her lungs. "Great hero looking for work!" she yelled as she made sure her rare axe was visible for all to see.
After about an hour of yelling that and asking people specifically, another adventure finally said he had a job for her. He said that he had some work that needed to be done at his house, so Shizu assumed it was probably some invading vermin that she needed to rid this man of. The man seemed apprehensive about getting her help, which Shizu really wasn't sure about. She was a great hero, surely any problem this man had could be solved by her. Eventually they reached his house, causing the man to say, "Just take care of the garden ok?"
Shizu knew exactly what he meant, the monsters were hiding in the garden. With the axe in hand, she swung at one of the plants. It felt good to finally swing with it. She had never seen, much less used a real weapon before. Sure she saw some stuff on TV, but she did her best to make it feel natural. It seemed like her body knew the basic motions she was attempting, and it seemed to be working. She was removing the plants easily, meaning the monsters had nowhere else to hide. Eventually when she finished slashing the plants, she didn't manage to find any monsters. She checked everywhere she possibly could to try and find them, but they seemed to be invisible.
She felt very disappointed at this discovery. She should have known that he first job as an adventurer would be a wash, but it still felt bad. Well, everyone has to start somewhere, and failing a quest is still better than laying in a bed all day. She would rather do one hundred failed or stupid quests before she would ever go back into that bed. She managed to put a smile on her face once she started to look on the bright side of this sad scenario. She decided that she would report to the quest giver about how it went.
Shizu knocked on the door of her client and once he answered, she stated, "Im sorry sir but I checked all of the plants but I couldn't find any monsters or demons." The man managed to simply looked shocked and very quickly pushed Shizu aside so he could get into his garden. What he saw was all of the plants that he grew were completely cut up and destroyed. He couldn't help but shake the surprise from his face as he just stood there awestruke. "Maybe they went to hide underground, I can get right on that." Shizu responded before trying to walk back into the garden. Before she could, the man grabbed her by the shirt and prevented her from moving. "What in god's name did you do?!" He asked very angrily.
"I just searched your garden for the monsters. Thats the only reason why you would hire a great hero like me." She said matter of factly, not understanding what she did that was wrong.
"Your telling me your not a gardener?" He asked starting to sound more civil now, but definitely still very furious and vengeful.
"No, why would an epic adventure garden when there is the world to save?" Shizu asked still very perplexed at what he was so angry about.
"THEN WHY ARE YOU CARRYING A SHOVEL AROUND?!" He yelled, now extremely furious and ready to strangle any poor soul that went close enough to him. Before Shizu could answer that question, she was lifted very fast and thrown out of his yard. While her butt hurt once she landed, she quickly recovered and started to think about the questions she had after that encounter. How did her battleaxe make her a gardener. He acted like that should be common knowledge, but Shizu's life being bedridden didn't supply her with much of that.
She eventually decided that she desperately needed answers, so she figured the best place to go was where she found the axe. After a few minutes, she managed to arrive where she saw the axe for the first time. She saw the dirt and the flowers that were around it, and was confused at why an axe would be there in the first place. So she found some bushes nearby and decided to hide there. Luckily her stealth got better since she found the coat, but it was still not superb. After a few minutes of waiting she saw a few of what she assumed to be peasents. The odd part was, they all had axes just like hers.
After a while, she saw that they werent using the axes to kill monsters, or to free helpless damsels. These peasents were using their axes to dig holes and plant flowers. She then looked back to her own axe and wondered, is this even an axe. She felt immensely stupid once she realized that this was not in fact a rare mob drop. It was a just a simple tool used for a simple task. And so she was back to square one again, she had no weapon. But more importantly, she needed somewhere to keep her shovel as a memento. She then remembered, this game must have some sort of inventory system right?
After hours upon hours of guessing, thinking and debating, she finally discovered how to open her inventory. She was overwhelmed at what was in front of her, there was so much going on and it had so much room. She quickly smiled and looked to see a pleasant surprise. She had a sword all along, just in an inventory she had no idea how to access. A huge surge of relief went over her as she equiped the Starter Longsword. It looked just like she pictured a sword would look, and seemed to be just what she needed to really start killing things.
Before she could focus on that though, she had a memento to store. She thought back to earlier and wondered how silly she must have been. She just found an item on the ground and assumed it was a rare weapon, she was being way too hopeful. Lately she has been trying to control how pessimistic she is, but sometimes she just couldn't be stopped. She was a stupid dumb idiot and isnt afraid to admit that. Once she figured out how to put the shovel into her inventory she managed to hover over it. And her suspicions were correct, she in fact had a shovel.
And, for the first time in Elder Tale, and in years, she giggled. She was able to laugh about that experience and admit that she was pretty darn dumb. Maybe she really was still a kid at heart, thinking something as naive as that. She would always remember the day that she though she would be a shovel wielding assassin.

Notes: This is a really weird idea, but I asked in chatbox for one word to write a thread about, and my ex-husband said "shovel" so this happened. And it may seem a bit out of character for Shizu, but given how she was bedridden for almost her entire life, she would be pretty naive at first.
