[attr="class","statBox"]Words: [1206] Tags: [ Charity Falkenrath] Skills Used: [N/A] Notes: [Welcome to the Suck] [attr="class","titleBox"]This broken glass is all I've got left! [attr="class","textBox"] A slightly annoyed sigh escaped the lips of the Assassin as his blades dropped into their sheathes, the black metal weapons disappearing with a satisfied click. Behind him, the bodies of six high level Zomboars. They were each level twenty, the cap for the small creatures, and they were nothing but cannon fodder for the Assassin. With them being finished off and their disappearing into pixels, the zone was now completely clean and empty of all hostile monsters. Every being Saber had found when he entered the zone was now gone and his inventory was full of goodies as a reward for his tireless actions. It had taken him only a few minutes to wipe the space and in that time, he hadn’t even broken a sweat. The endurance training he had put himself through had made him a perfectionist and Saber was able to surgically remove any and all threats he came across with extreme precision. In instances like this, item gathering events were nothing but body counts for him. Yes, there was an event in the air; Halloween.
The monsters Saber finished dispatching were new entities in the land of Elder Tale and their drops were limited time items. Killing certain ‘nightmare’ monsters gave players rewards and promoted grinding in the fields. Saber was lucky; he came by the open spot by chance but this wasn’t the only place he had been hunting. Due to the need for a high volume of kills to actually gain legitimate rewards, Saber moved from zone to zone and invaded several locations with his blades ready. A few called him a thief, but before they could punish him the Assassin was already gone along with the keep. It was a dangerous game now that a few players were catching up in levels, but most others around Londinium were still below the level of fifty. That made Londinium’s fields Saber’s playground. It was a nice feeling and honestly, it made him grin. He hadn’t felt this free since he had hit the current level cap.
But even so, Saber’s slaughterfest was forced to come to an end. His inventory was full of rewards and items and even he wasn’t going to carry a huge sack of items along with him out in the open. Thus, he decided that this current field was the last. Now that the field was clear and he had no more space for anything else, the Assassin turned his eyes back to Londinium and headed back to the city. The Assassin cut through the familiar forest and kept to the treetops, darting through the canopy with almost unrivaled speed. He knew this area like the back of his hand and his body was well-tuned to the world around him. He could move in the digital body he had with ease and felt weightless once he got into a certain mindset. When Saber first started, he was sloppy and he worked for days on end to fix that. Slowly he refined his movements and became comfortable in his new skin until finally, he could move naturally.
The Assassin spent very little energy as he flashed through the forest, kicking lightly at the tree branches as he moved like a whisper. The players, monsters, and animals he moved by hardly even noticed the Elf and if they did, he was gone before they realized what had caused the noise. Within minutes, Saber was back at the gates of Londinium and passed through them like a ghost. He jumped down to the streets, bounded through the opening in the walls, and then elevated himself upwards once more to the rooftops. From there, he accelerated again and took the straightest line he could to the bank. It was the early afternoon and most Adventurers were up and awake now. It was busy in the streets below but it wasn’t as bad as it could have been. Saber took note of that and moved even faster, wanting to get in and out before the streets became too crowded.
When he reached the bank, it was quite populated but Saber was able to access an NPC Teller without much difficulty. He dumped his items out and had the NPC deposit them into his oversized storage space. The Teller accepted the items and disappeared, carrying the loot into the safety of the bank’s lower halls. Saber wasted no time waiting for the Teller to return and left the bank, heading back in the direction of the gates. Time was of the essence when it came to the current event and if Saber wanted to maximize profits, he couldn’t wait for anything. He returned to the rooftops and then headed back to the gates. However, upon returning, Saber spotted something out of the corner of his eye; something new to the scene.
Just off to the side of the gates, sitting in the shadows, was a man draped in rags. He sat with his legs crossed and leaned back against the stone boundary. He seemed out of place for the scene before Saber and that drew the Assassin’s attention. After living in the slums of Londinium and owning a store hidden within the muck of the city, Saber’s eyes were quick at pointing out beings in the shadows. This man was no different. Saber halted his forward movement towards the gate and dropped down from the rooftops, his boots lightly tapping onto the cobblestone that lined the side of the main road. The Elf checked around himself, and then looked back towards the quiet and lonely man in the dark. The gate guards ignored the other man and didn’t even look at him, but Saber’s eyes bore into the figure. Almost as if he felt the Assassin’s eyes, the man looked up and stared back. With a light motion, the man called for Saber to approach. Saber nodded and did so, striding up to the man quietly. A guard glanced over towards the Assassin as Saber walked to the right of the gate but he kept his mouth shut.
“You sit here as if you have given up. May I ask why?” Saber rested back on his heels and placed his hands lightly onto the pommels of his swords as he did so. He nudged his nose against the inside of his scarf and looked down at the man from beneath his hood. The man smirked and let out a soft chuckle.
“Looks like you’ve never been run out of your house, sword-man.” The man scoffed and nodded towards Saber’s outfit. The Assassin narrowed his eyes and tilted his head back slightly. How petty.
“That does not answer my question, now does it?” Saber retorted, the sharp sentence causing the man to suck his teeth. Saber huffed beneath his scarf and rolled his shoulders back lightly. The man glared at the Assassin and grumbled. After a few moments of the two staring at each other, the man at Saber’s feet finally let out a heavy, defeated, sigh. He leaned forward and placed his elbows on his knees, slouching.
“I’ve been robbed.” The man said loudly, his voice sounding dejected. Looks like Saber was going to show some of his good samaritan skills again.

- - - - NIGHTLY DANCE OF BLEEDING SWORDS - - - - The fields were... completely empty.
Charity had been searching for a while now, attempting to locate some of the special Halloween monsters. But as she wandered through the trees, sword readily grasped in both hands and mild anxiety creeping up her spine, she was surprised to run into absolutely nothing. Even the other players she passed seemed confused - nobody could find any event monsters. She'd overheard a few people talking about a level 90 Assassin running through the area, slaying every mob in sight and leaving none for the low-levels, but she hadn't seen the figure herself. Was someone really being so selfish as to empty such an important training ground of it's mobs?
Sighing, she turned back towards the direction of the city. The mobs would probably respawn soon, but she was hungry. And if there really was a bloodthirsty level 90 on the prowl, she probably wouldn't get any kills in anyway. She returned her zweihander to it's place on her back, and began her slow walk back towards Londinium. May as well enjoy the peace while it lasts.
---
It didn't take her as long as she'd expected to get back to the city. In fact, unbeknownst to her, it was just about the amount of time it took for a certain Assassin to enter the city, use the bank, and then leave. And as she walked alongside the walls of Londinium, following them round towards the entrance, she was just in time to see said Assassin descend from above. She froze momentarily, sure for a second he was looking at her, before realising he was instead focusing on a ragged man hidden in the shadows of Londinium's walls.
Charity instinctively hid as best she could from the unknown Assassin - she wasn't sure why, but something about him told her that he was likely trouble. A small bead of sweat grew on her forehead, as she watched the Assassin approach the ragged man.
A conversation seemed to start between them, though she couldn't catch all the words. Slowly, carefully, she crept closer. Stealth wasn't exactly her forte, but damn if she wasn't going to try her best. To be honest, she wasn't really hidden - a single glance in her direction would reveal her like a deer in headlights. But she stuck close to the walls, in the sun's shadow, hoping to not be noticed by the imposing figure before her.
The two men before her seemed to be silent for a moment, before the ragged man declared that he had been robbed.
"R-Robbed?" She said almost instinctively, immediately giving away her presence. She gasped, her hands flung to cover her mouth, and her eyes widened in fear.
"I- I'm sorry, I didn't m-m-m-mean to eavesdrop, I just, I, I didn't, I..." She stammered out, not helping her situation at all. 472 words | Saber - - - - - REMINDS ME THAT I STILL LIVE - - - - -

[attr="class","statBox"]Words: [1248] Tags: [ Charity Falkenrath] Skills Used: [N/A] Notes: [Interrogations are Fun] [attr="class","titleBox"]This broken glass is all I've got left! [attr="class","textBox"] Just after the man announced his problem, Saber heard quite the surprised voice spark up. The Assassin had felt a presence encroach on his position and felt eyes on him, but he had initially passed the feeling off as just another player in the street passing by. As he looked over towards the source of the noise, however, Saber found himself looking at a cowering female. The Assassin’s hands twitched as if they were going to draw his blades but he restrained his muscles. He was within the walls of the city and any aggressive action towards another player would land him a jail sentence, if not worse. Saber wasn’t exactly hiding anything either and the conversation he was having with the man was open to the public. Seeing someone else interested in what the man had to say, or interested in what Saber was doing, was not against any sort of law. Then again, there weren’t any laws in place anyways.
Thus, Saber’s hands remained stationary on his blades. His fingertips dug into the clothed hilts, the muscles in his hands tensing up as he stared at the woman but he remained still. Based on her reaction, the woman had no planned to reveal her presence at first but the conversation must have been a bit too surprising for her. Saber had heard such things many times before so seeing a man on the streets without much to his name wasn’t anything new. What was new was how he got there, and that was what drew Saber in too. With the appearance of another curious body, Saber found himself no longer alone in the conversation with the man at his feet. He had also found another body to help him with whatever the task would be. The only question in Saber’s mind was if the woman was going to be timid the entire way through. She shook and stammered, attempting to apologize but in doing so, she only became more uncomfortable.
“Oi.” Saber spoke loudly and clearly to the woman, hoping to at least stop her from continuing on with her muttering and broken words. Then, he looked back down at the man in front of him.
“Hiding isn’t polite. If you’re curious, then ask questions.” The Assassin’s eyes narrowed again and he twitched his blades lightly. The man in front of him rumbled and glared back at the Assassin again before he looked at the woman. The man smiled and waved her to come close.
“Come, little lady! The more the merrier! This stuck up Assassin could probably use some help anyways!” An instant after his sentence ended, Saber’s blade stabbed into the wall beside the man’s skull. The black sword reflected little light and absorbed much of it as it hovered in the air. The man froze solid and two of the gate guards turned to look at the scene. Saber snarled beneath his scarf for a few seconds before ultimately returning his sword to its sheath. If the game didn’t have its annoying parameters, Saber would’ve cut a few hairs off the man’s head. Though, his show of force did the job and the man didn’t attempt to talk poorly about him further.
“Talk. Who robbed you and why?” Saber demanded, stepping back and to his left as he created a bit of distance between himself and the man on the ground. Doing so would also leave some room for the woman, should she choose to step forward. The Assassin kept his eyes on the man though and didn’t check on his fellow Adventurer.
“My house was invaded a few days ago by a bunch of annoying pumpkin things and they pretty much ransacked the place. They destroyed a lot of my stuff and forced me out. If I stayed, I would’ve been killed. I don’t know why they did it either but I suspect they were after the jewel my family has kept. My mother told me it was some powerful gem thing, but I never knew what it did. It’s been nothing but bad luck for me and whenever I take it somewhere, I end up getting attacked so I stuffed it in a box and hid it. Heh, I guess that didn’t work either.” The man explained his situation in an annoyed tone, his eyes shifting back and forth between the woman and the Assassin. Whenever he looked towards Saber, he glared and seemed to want to move away as much as possible. Saber paid him no mind and simply took in the information he was provided with.
The man was attacked by a group of pumpkins and fled, leaving his entire house behind? They must have appeared in a massive group if he wasn’t able to dispatch of them by himself. Not only that but if they were destroying things and were truly searching for that gem, then the gem must have had some really mystical powers. Curiosity itched at Saber’s skull and the scholar within the Assassin’s soul wished to learn of why the gem was such an interesting attraction for monsters. Though, part of him believed it was also just the man’s bad luck and terrible attitude. He seemed rough around the edges and if his personality was truly as rotten as Saber could see, then it was no wonder why monsters attacked him. But, such an answer was just speculation. If Saber really wanted to know, then he would have to go to the house itself.
“So, where’s your house then?” Saber glanced to his right towards the woman for a moment, evaluating her visible items and gear as he awaited his response. She seemed to be a lower level player and judging by her looks, she didn’t have much experience in the field. If that was the case then he would have to make sure she didn’t fall into trouble, if she actually came along. That was a big if. Seeing as she seemed afraid of the Assassin’s presence, she probably wouldn’t exactly fit in with how he fought. To combat that, Saber had a secret weapon.
“It’s a little ways up the road and off the main path into the forest. My great grandfather built it to get away from the bustle of the city. I think it’s a trashheap. If you really want to help, then walk five minutes down the road and look for an opening in the forest to the left. Follow it and you’ll find the house.” The man scoffed at the Assassin’s question and rumbled as he finished speaking. Saber mentally opened his interface and swiftly navigated to the map. He tabbed in towards the suspected location and then visualized what he should expect to see at the destination. Once he had an overview, he closed everything out and then looked over his shoulder at the woman.
“You can come or go, that’s up to you.” He spoke curtly to the woman from beneath his scarf and then turned his back to the two others, his boots clambering against the road as he headed towards the gate. The woman had heard the tale provided by the man and it was up to her whether she wished to come along with the Assassin. If she chose to go, then he would drag her along. If not, then that would end Saber’s connection to her. Either way, he was going to the house to handle the infestation and to retrieve the heirloom.

- - - - NIGHTLY DANCE OF BLEEDING SWORDS - - - - The Assassin's words snapped Charity out of her stammering, forcing her attention back to the situation at hand. His voice carried as much intimidation as his appearance did, immediately setting the power balance between the two. In almost direct contrast, the ragged man waved her over with a cheery face.
His cheer was cut short almost immediately, with the thnk of a stabbing sword. Charity immediately recoiled, expecting to see his blood spill on the floor any moment, but slowly opened her eyes to see the Assassin's strike had landed just shy of the man's head.
She gulped.
If it hadn't been already clear by the disparity of their levels, it was clear now that this Assassin was not somebody to mess around with. She knew level 90 players were strong, but this man felt... more like a force of nature, than a person.
With her lifespan shortened by a few years, Charity returned her focus to the problem at hand. She stepped ever so slightly closer the the pair of men before her, careful not to enter what she decided to call the Assassin's "danger zone", and listened carefully to the ragged man's story. She nodded along to his words, a look of deep worry on her face as he told them of the monsters who attacked his house. If they were pumpkin things, that meant they had to be Halloween monsters, right? Did this man have some kind of connection to their appearance?
...or maybe he was just unlucky. After all, monsters didn't really NEED a reason to attack anyone. She looked to the Assassin, attempting to get a read on his feelings, but his expression was impossible for her to understand. Whoever he was, he took his role seriously, and remained stoic and distant throughout the ragged man's entire story.
As she stared at him, he turned to look back at her, and she squeaked again and hurriedly looked anywhere but the imposing Assassin. If looks could kill, his would have her 6 feet under by now. If he didn't give her a heart attack first...
With the feeling of the Assassin's eyes piercing her back, she listened in as the other man gave them directions. She attempted to work out where in the forest that put his house, but despite her best efforts she couldn't quite place it. Sighing, she instead simply attempted to memorize his directions.
As soon as the man finished giving his directions, the Assassin moved. He barked at her as he left, startling her once again, before swiftly heading in the direction they had been pointed.
"I-I promise to get your gem back!" She said to the ragged man, before turning and jogging after the Assassin in an attempt to keep up. If she had been on her own she would have been a lot more reluctant to go, but with such a powerful player leading the charge they were practically destined to succeed.
---
She walked by his side in silence for a little while, unsure of how to break the ice. After all, his presence was about as intimidating as a drill sergeant. Even more so, to be honest - he felt like a knife, resting on her throat, and one wrong step would cause it to cut her.
"...um..." she piped up eventually, looking towards the anonymous Assassin. "I-I'm, Charity, by the way... Charity F-Falkenrath..." With a gulp, and an anxious sweat on her neck, she forced the words out of her mouth. "A-And, can I ask what your name is?" 590 words | Saber - - - - - REMINDS ME THAT I STILL LIVE - - - - -

[attr="class","textBox"] As Saber left the ragged-looking man behind, he pulled his cloak around himself to enclose his body comfortably beneath the battle-tattered item. He glanced over his shoulder after he took a few steps, attracted to the sound of light footsteps coming up behind him. To his surprise, the woman had decided to tag along. Whether that was because of the man’s story, Saber’s words, or her own decision he did not know. However with her coming along, Saber felt that things would go a bit easier. Even though he was a high level, the presence of another Adventurer nearby helped alleviated Saber’s worries of losing his surroundings. Not only that but now there would be two bodies moving towards the same objective, lightening the workload. Again, Saber did not mind carrying all of the weight but things were just a bit easier in a group. How much use the woman would be though, well that was to be determined. For now he kept a little faith in the timid soul. She didn’t seem completely incompetent.
After leaving the city, Saber let out a soft sigh and closed his eyes for a moment, his feet leading him along the road smoothly and his ears kept tabs on the woman’s location in relevance to his own. Though, his ears picked up on something else as well. The sound of the rustling leaves as the wind whisked through the air caused the Assassin to relax a little; the gentle background noise put his mind at ease. Having lived in the mountains as a young boy and choosing to live outside of the city’s walls as a lower level made Nature far more appealing to Saber than it did most. He was attracted to its beauty and its kindness but he was also brutally aware of how vicious it could be; that wonderful balance allowed Saber to enjoy it even more. Simply walking through the forest was almost like a little treat for the Assassin. The world also provided a netting for the Assassin to fall into. Whenever he felt pressured or pained, or if he felt as if everything was going to explode in his face, all he had to do was close his eyes and listen. The sounds of nature were his solace in war, much like the soft warmth of a woman’s embrace.
Just as his relaxation hit its peak, he heard the light voice of his new companion perk up. Saber opened his eyes to check his surroundings, as well as the time, and then looked over his shoulder a little to put the woman in his view. She seemed quite frightened of him, but that was something he was used to. Saber wasn’t exactly a tender person and handled situations with a heavy hand. He didn’t waste time with nonsense and kept to the business at hand. Not only that, but his physical outlook probably wasn’t that appealing. If Saber looked at himself, he assumed that he probably looked like the type of guy who would commit genocide. That was fine, as that meant Saber wouldn’t be bothered by random people. Though at times, he considered adjusting his appearance. Saber had left his mercenary antics behind long ago and now, he was just a regular adventurer. Maybe after he returned to his underground den, he would sew some new clothes.
The woman spoke quiet bravely to the Assassin and introduced herself as Charity Falkenrath. It was a nice name and a suited one for her. She seemed kind and very peaceful, even with her magical appearance. The left side of Saber’s lips curled upwards slightly as he smirked, and then his eyes turned forward again. She asked for his name but at first, he didn’t answer. He considered staying quiet as he always had and nearly elected to not even answer her, or to at least tell her that he wouldn’t reveal it. But instead he played along. He realized that changing his appearance likely wouldn’t make him more approachable but Saber would also have to work on his attitude. If he kept his hard shell closed and played the face of the resident bad guy, he would get nowhere.
“It’s Saber. Nothing memorable.” Saber responded, his voice coming out a bit rougher than he had initially planned but it did the job of answering her question. Well, at least he did one thing right. Sort of, but now there was the job of continuing conversation, which was something he wasn’t ever good at with new faces.
“I see that you’re a Mage.” Saber spoke after a short pause, glancing over his shoulder again towards the woman. He made note of her getup and wiggled his nose slightly beneath his scarf. The magic-type Adventurers had always been a bit of a mystery to him. He didn’t know where their power came from, how they learned their spells, or even how they actually fought. Making a giant fireball out of the air and then lobbing it at the enemy was quite confusing at times to the Assassin. He understood the concept of it, but understanding how they actually operated was a different story. Saber was a ranger. He understood swords and bows but that was pretty much it when it came to combat. As an Alchemist, he was beginning to understand the concept of mana and how it worked but he was by no means a master.
“How long have you been practicing it?” In an attempt to understand the woman a bit more, Saber lobbed his own question into the air. It was better than silence, at least.
