Coffee. It was starting to become Nyx’s weakness… or maybe it was her strength… or was it something else entirely? No matter what it was, Nyx has started to drink coffee almost on a daily basis. Now that she had finally braved to go beyond the city gates, Nyx was starting to actually enjoy the outside world. She didn’t do much monster slaying as of yet but instead chose to enjoy the plains and forestry. It reminded her of her home… or well her old one back in Munich. Those had been better days… or at least better memories. She had been younger when she moved away which honestly wasn’t saying much. Nyx was young considering the circumstances… though not the youngest person she had met or seen… but it was possible that those could have been People of the Land, or Landers as many Adventurers called them.
The café that Nyx was standing in front of reminded her of a café she, her brother, and her mother had frequented back on the other side. It was small, but everything in Paris had been small, even the apartment that they had for their brief stay. Nyx had been in this particular café before; her sorcerer friend-person had brought her here before. Saiph had been his name... Saiph was a name of a star in the constellation Orion. It was fitting in a way. He had been the one to guide her out of her fear and her need only for survival. Her guiding star if you were to play with the words properly. Saiph regularly visited the café Nyx found out passing by the café from time to time. There was another person Nyx saw who frequented the café and talked to Saiph from time to time. She was an Assassin, Saiph had told her, with purple hair… and she always had a small fire-like fox with her. The Assassin never talked to her, but Nyx found her rather intriguing. However, neither faces were in the café.
Nyx decided to head in anyway, pushing the door in so she would walk through. The kind barista greeted her, and Nyx ordered a coffee, requesting plenty of cream and sugar along with it. Nyx found coffee incredibly bitter unless it had sugar and cream, but she knew of people who drank it black. She couldn’t understand those people very well.
After ordering, Nyx looked around for a place to sit… she ended up choosing a booth table and she attempted to relax. However, she had still not gotten used to her fox tail always being in the way. She probably sat on it more times than she cared to count, and she wasn’t quite sure where to place it. In the end, she ended up having her tail hang out the side of the booth where there were no seats… maybe no one would notice…

Coffee was one of the few luxuries that Kain was glad transitioned between the former world and the current one so well. His long nights of studying back in the old world, as well as his overnight researches in the current one almost dictated that he develop a taste for the magical brown liquid. That, and it was quite honestly one of the few things that probably kept him sane. Noctis had even started to develop a taste for it as well, or at least, Kain's tendency to doctor it up with too much cream and sugar appealed to the heretic spirit that dwelled within the same headspace, so it was only natural that the two spend a little bit of time most days at at least some establishment that served the modern magical beverage.
This particular day, he had been visiting Londonium to pay an old "friend" a visit, much at Noctis' request. The spirit's old convocation amased within the sewer system of old londonium, and had quite honestly been pretty decent for a group of heretics. To be honest, Kain was suprised at how Noctis' little group had actually been long ago swayed by their similar ideology of miasma as a cross to bear, and a neccessary evil to do more tremendous good. It was refreshing to see as opposed to some other heretics in other areas who seemed to be quite more hell-bent on a warpath against landers, but nonetheless, being a heretic lander was dangerous. They didn't have the same respawn abilities as he did, and lived in fear of running into wardens. He would need to figure out some sort of plan to boost their morale sooner or later, the group was little more than just a club for enthusiasts at this point and he would need them to get stronger as well. But he couldn't think too much on that at the moment. Right now, he needed a well deserved cup of Joe to help clear out his mind.
He came upon one of his more favorite cafes. Its view near a window was good of the town itself, and quite honestly, it was generally just busy enough to have a good atmosphere, but it was never crowded. The heretic strode in, taking off his hat as he entered, his suit striking much dissonance with most of the more fantasy-styled patrons of the bar. He caught a few worried glances in his direction before being greeted generously by the barista. It seemed to ease the mood a bit. He wasn't very high of a level for an adventurer, but his appearance always seemed to give off the first impression of some sort of high-level mob or even possibly a low-level dungeon boss, what with his somewhat pale complexion, gold-and-purple eyes, black and purple messy hair, and stitched up skin. He had come to live with it honestly, and even began to find it kind of funny. Even some of the landers who had seen him before began to get a small chuckle as they saw their friends stare in a combination of horror and awe at his own visage.
He would greet the stares back with a kind smile as he walked up to the bar, his gait on the fairly tall side. His order was rather simple, a large cup of iced mocha and a smaller one of a blonde roast creme brule coffee. It was the amount of sugar and creme he would order in it to doctor it up that would be shocking. A large, rather almost frightening man proving to have an almost ridiculous sweet tooth. After ordering and thanking the barista, he made his way over to the seats. He had his usual spot in one of the booths but something was slightly amiss. As he approached, he saw a white fluffy tail sticking out of the side of the bench and, as he got closer, noticed a small foxtail adventurer sat in the seat.
Approaching rather calmly, as to not startle the girl, he walked his way around to the seat in the booth opposite of her. With a calm and kind smile he looked at her. "Mind if I join you?"

At first, it seemed no one noticed Nyx’s tail… or at least no one had said anything. It was possible they simply took pity on her which mattered not to her. For now, she was just focused on her coffee which had been delivered to her along with a cup of creamer and many packages of sugar. She had poured quite a bit of creamer in it before slowly stirring it with a spoon. She was just about to add sugar to her coffee when a voice distracted her. It had asked if they could join her.
Nyx’s ears twitched as she turned to look at who had spoken. It was a taller guy who was dressed and appeared rather abnormal to her. He had dark hair that was either black or dark purple, she couldn’t tell which, and his eyes were also purple… at least she was pretty sure purple was the color she was looking for. She had been color blind in the real world, but it had not carried over to the game world so she was still sorting colors out from time to time… like now for instance. Colors aside, it was the stitches on his face that were the most peculiar. They looked like the hurt… or at least they would hurt her.
“Sure,” Nyx finally said after a moment, a small smile forming, “Company is always fun.” Nyx then proceed to put sugar into her coffee. “Oh, I’m Nyx by the way. It’s nice to meet you,” she was curious about her new company. Many people probably thought he was an odd one, but those kinds of things didn’t matter to her. Appearances were temporary and easily changed. Personalities, however, were a different story.
Nyx’s attention went back to her coffee after she dumped the seventh package of sugar into it. She stirred it up, making sure that most of the sugar was dissolved. By now, though, the coffee was not a dark brown but rather light, but that was what she wanted. She took a sip of the coffee and was rather happy that it was actually sweet enough, and her ears and tail unconsciously twitched happily.

Kain took kindly to the courtesy that Nyx offered with the open seat. He returned her small smile with one of his own as he took his seat, calmly sitting down and shuffling over. As she offered her name, he gave a small bit of a good natured chuckle as he extended his scared and stitched hand in greeting, "Pleasure. You can call me Noctis. I'm one of the few people who chose 'Heretic' as a class choice." Shortly there after the waitress appeared with his two drinks, his own sweet tooth rivaling even that of the girls, filling up almost a fourth of the warmer glass wit creamer before adding a rather large quantity of sugar cubes into it. giving it a small stir as to set the sugars to dissolve, he switched views and began stirring the iced mocha, watching for a moment as the layers all slowly became one. It wasn't that he was ignoring the girl, it just wasn't the first time he had run into a foxtail before, and in all his previous experiences they had turned out to be a rather boisterous bunch.
But not this one.
No, something about her was much calmer than the rest. Kain found it slightly intriguing honestly to find one who defied the stereotype. It also peaked his interest at how she had managed to remain such a low level for so long. Taking a sip from his mocha, he addressed his companion. "So, what's your story then? Most adventurers seem to have one, usually dealing with either how much of a godsend this world is, or how much they miss home. I take it you're closer to the latter though considering your level, and don't take me as rude but I'd quite like to hear it if you wouldn't mind." It was, all-in-all just meaningless chit-chat to him. Not that people's personal history wasn't interesting or worth noting, he just didn't find much these days to talk about in the world as it was. He had yet to meet any fellow adventurers who had chosen the path of the heretic, and most he had talked to had either been so way above his own level that he always felt sort of useless as of late.
To be honest, it was probably why he was spending his time lounging around drinking coffee instead of questing.
No matter though. He was enjoying his time watching the people and sipping his drink, and this small addition of company to his plans was a rather refreshing change from his usual routine.

The new guy returned her smile as he took his place at the booth seat across from her. He introduced himself as Noctis, explaining that he was one of the few people who chose “Heretic” as a class. It wasn’t long after that that he received his two drinks. He, like Nyx, seemed to like cream and sugar. She was liking him a lot already.
Nyx continued to drink her coffee. Noctis took a drink as well before he began to talk. Small talk was always welcome, Nyx thought. Who knew, maybe she would make a friend that day. It was a rather interesting conversation or rather a question. He asked what her story was, stating that most adventurers had them. He assumed she was among the group that missed home, but he wanted to hear her response. It was a warranted question, for sure. Nyx was still level one, and she had been avoiding leaving Londinium for two years now, despite the fact that the sorcerer had helped her regain her bearings. Though the sorcerer had asked her a similar question when they had first met.
“I’m not really sure how much of a story it is,” Nyx said, setting down her cup of coffee, “It’s kind of an accident, really… why I’m here. My brother was the video game person; he loved to play them, and he played all sorts of games. He heard about the Elder Tale game coming out with a new expansion and convinced me to give it a try. Well, it turned out that the day it was released, my brother was away at a competition. I was going to wait to try it out, but he insisted I check it out since I had never played a video game before. The next think I knew, I woke up here.”
That was all she was going to say on the topic. She had no intention on revealing more than that… at least not yet. She hadn’t even revealed the rest to the sorcerer let alone anyone else. Facts were knowledge, and knowledge could easily be turned into a weapon. She had no interest in having any weapons floating around that could be used against her… especially because she had no weapons or shields to use either.
After a moment, Nyx spoke again, “You said you were a… heretic, right? What is a heretic anyway? Also, what’s your story then?”

He smiled at the girl as she told her story, appreciative of her openness. It was a slightly sad story, but nothing that would have seemed too out of the ordinary. She was a victim of circumstance more than anything and he actually felt sorry for her now being trapped in this world of theirs. As she neared the end of her tale, the server came over with his own drinks. He smiled at the server-girl as she gave him his drinks, and slid the mocha over in front of his face and stirred the the iced mixture until the layers blended together in the cup. The girls question came as a little bit of a surprise, and his face probably showed it a bit. People didn't generally ask for his own story. He stopped stirring and starred into his cup, the mixture's swirling slowly coming to a stop. Memories came into his head of his life before. Of his mundane life and his use of these games as a sort of outlet and escape. As his gaze was lost in his cup he gave a light and almost tired smile. "My story isn't really important."
His attention turned to the hotter glass, pulling it over and proceeding to doctor it up, putting in a decent amount of cream and almost a handful of sugar cubes. He twirled them in his cup to melt them and gave a small blow on the cup to let it begin cooling before taking an extra sugar cube, tossing it into his mouth, and proceeding to munch on it a bit. Her interest in Heretics was certainly interesting. That being said, it wasn't the most well known or accepted of classes so he figured he would explain at least the basics of it to her.
"Heretics are sort of like...A dark sorcerer mixed with what I could only describe as an anti-priest," he began. "We have a lot of potential for power and output as well as versatility, but we do it at a cost. A lot of our abilities actually cause detrimental effects both physically and mentally on our own bodies. Sometimes we can temporarily go insane from them." He picked up his glass of iced mocha and took a sip. "Some people even look down on us for doing it as they think that all we care about is spreading our madness. A lot of us just see it as a cross to bear, taking up ideals of being a martyr for the sake of the power to beat our foes."
It was the short and simple. Probably painted himself in a bad light for the seemingly small and innocent girl. He had no intentions on drawing her into his whole playing-with-darkness-for-imense-power situation. If anything he would probably try and push her away from messing with heretics all together. Sure he and the members of his order were some of the nicer heretics, there were also plenty more bad apples in the heretic class. He took another long drink of his mocha.

As Nyx finished talking, one of the servers came back to the table where Nyx and Noctis were, bringing with her Noctis’s drinks. He began to stir his drinks as Nyx decided to ask her questions about his story and what a heretic was. He seemed to stare at the cup, but Nyx had a feeling he was actually staring through it, thinking back of another time or possibly a person. It was a reasonable guess which was proved by him saying that his story wasn’t important. Nyx didn’t believe that at all, but she decided not to say anything… at least not yet.
After a second, Noctis went to his second drink and began to put cream and sugar into the cup much like she had done before… though she had chosen not to eat a pure sugar cube as Noctis had. After a moment, he spoke again, explaining what Heretics were.
He started by explaining that they were a mixture of a dark sorcerer and an anti-priest… which she didn’t particularly understand… the anti-priest part at least. As for a dark sorcerer, it would be something like an evil or dark version of the Sorcerer that she knew. He continued saying that they had power, but the power came at a cost, explaining that they could go temporarily insane due to the cost. That made people look down on Heretics… though maybe afraid was a better way to describe them. He chose not to speak more and instead opted to take a drink from one of his cups.
“Hmm…” Nyx thought aloud, “That sounds complicated to be honest… and I’m glad I didn’t choose that class. I would probably be really stuck if I had… though Enchanter seems to be interesting. An acquaintance of mine said that the purpose of an Enchanter is to help your party as well as hinder the enemies. I can’t do much on my own… but that’s okay with me honestly. I don’t think I would be able to survive going out there by myself… I’m too naïve when it comes to games.”
Nyx took a long drink from her coffee, her mind processing what Noctis had told her. “You said that you’re story isn’t important,” Nyx finally said, “but I think you’d rather not talk about it. Everyone has a story, and everyone has motives. If you don’t want to talk about it, it’s fine. I don’t necessarily talk about my story often, but you seem to be interesting enough company. Maybe we can work together on hunting in the future… though I’m still level 1 so I’m not of much use in a fight.”

He wasn't sure if the bit of wisdom was the girl's own or someone elses, but either way it came as a pleasant shock. He gave an audible and rather hearty laugh at the girls comments towards his own lack of a story. And here I thought I was the sage, he thought to himself. Chuckling with a huge grin across his face, he responded to her statement. "Fair enough," he began. " I suppose everyone does have a story, and you did tell me yours. Mine is much more...boring I guess. Before this life I was a college student, well, a drop-out for the most part. I went back home from University due to depression and tried to get back on my feet. Got a small job working hourly at a local supermarket, went to some classes at a community college. Wasn't anything super exciting. More than anything I loved two things: I loved writing, and I loved video games. I played MMOs mainly and RPG games just because I could really create some interesting characters and put them on an interesting story or give them interesting histories. At the time, this game was no exception." He took a quick swig of his iced drink before resuming his tale.
"I got into this game when they released it because it had some very unique features as far as character creation. It was almost limitless and, something most people didn't notice, was there was a small section that was optional where you could write a character backstory. So, still trying to cope a bit with depression, I made a dark heretic character, someone who used to be a high ranking sage for a dark order whose spirit was bound back into his body which they had to put back together and bind with dark magic. Needless to say, I got a little too in depth." He chuckled. He wasn't fully sure if he should even show her Noctis, and to be honest, Noctis wasn't so sure why Kain was starting to bring him up. Noctis had been going through a lot lately on his own terms and had (for the most part) been keeping to himself in the deeper parts of Kain and his mind. He relented though and let his compatriot continue. No real point in fighting it he supposed.
"I ended up writing a whole character with his own personality and everything that I had planned on RP-ing as in the game. I had no idea that the game would have turned into this. If I did, who knows what I would have done differently." Finishing his tale, he reached for his glass and took a sip, the heat of the warmer glass shocking him as he thought he had reached for the colder one.

After Nyx was done talking, she wasn’t quite sure what to expect as a response from Noctis. After a very brief pause, a smile formed on the heretic’s face just before he began to laugh. The laughter caught her by surprise. She blinked a few times, and her ears and tail twitched. What exactly was he laughing at anyway? Was it her question or was it something else entirely? Either way once he stopped laughing, his grin didn’t disappear. He responded to her statements by saying that she was right, that everyone did have a story. His, though, he thought was boring.
Back home, Noctis was a college student that had dropped out and ended up working while taking a few classes at a lower-tiered college. He had a passion for writing and video games... and Nyx thought he would get along quite well with her brother. It seemed at time Frie’s life revolved around schoolwork and video games. Though the dropping out part made her heart hurt just a bit thinking about her passed older brother. He would probably be able to relate to Noctis much more than she would be able to.
What was interesting though was the second part about his character. Nyx did recall seeing an optional area where she would have been able to type in a “backstory” for her character, but she had skipped it as she didn’t exactly know what it meant or anything. It was her first game after all. However for Noctis, things didn’t exactly sound the greatest for him, and she didn’t quite understand what he meant. A character with his own and everything he planned to RP.
Nyx took a sip of her coffee when Noctis had. She thought back on what he had said, “Well to be honest, that sounds really, really complicated… the whole you and your character thing. Though at least you kept going on with your schooling. Back home, I was still in junior high getting ready to move onto high school though I did take high school leveled courses along with some other people in the same school…. Though I kind of wish I were still in school… I miss everyone and I miss my schooling. I think I would be better off if there was some sort of class about this place…. Like what everything means and everything… like a… a tutorial I guess is what it is called. I could just be overcomplicating things in my mind, but things are just really tricky if you ask me.”

Kain smiled as he took another sip, the girls nievity seeming rather fresh in this world. "This world can be a little complicated. I remember when I first took on a mentor to explain some of the basics to me. She had white hair, and was an enchanter like you." he gave a small chuckle as he set down his cup, the memories of him scrambling into a tree to escape the trouble she mercelessly threw at him. "Unlike her though, you seem a bit more on the cautious side. I'm not necessarily the best person to explain the way this world works, much less the intricacies of your class, but one of the things I am good at is being a quick learner. If you ever want a lesson on how this world works, I'd be happy to help you. Just don't expect me to go easy." His tone of voice was somewhere between a lighthearted seriousness, and an inside joke. He picked up the iced drink, and took a long drink from it, almost emptying it with a sigh.

Nyx’s companion seemed to agree with her, saying that the world they were in could be a bit complicated, though Nyx thought that a little was an understatement… after all, she was the one with fox ears and a tail.
Noctis continued though, talking about when he had a mentor that was an enchanter that also had white hair. To him, she wasn’t that cautious though. He also went on to say he was probably not the person to talk to when it comes to looking for a mentor… though if she did want his help, he wouldn’t go easy on her. That was fine… though maybe he was right. He was a heretic which was probably nothing like her Enchanter. She would have to look for someone else when it came to that.
“You’re probably right,” Nyx finally said, “I will have to go look for an Enchanter who can help me out on my class.” Nyx finished off her drink and set it to the side, “I should probably get going. Maybe I’ll be lucky and find an Enchanter on my way out. It was nice to meet you, Noctis.”
With that, Nyx made her way out of the booth, doing her best not to squish her tail. Then she went up to the register to pay for her drink and then headed out of the café. She made a mental note to remember the heretic. Who knew, she might run into him in the future… and hopefully, she’ll would be stronger than she was at that point.
