While Adler walked home from fighting Nepents and Weasels and Boars one day, she had a thought; wouldn’t travel be much quicker with a mount she could summon? She vaguely remembered being able to call horses to her aid when she played Elder Tales a few years ago using a flute or some item that was given in a quest or bought from a store or something, and then it hit her—why not try making a flute of her own? Obviously Woodcarvers were the conventional choice for a traditionally wooden instrument (to the point that they were named woodwind), but why couldn’t Artisans do the same? She wasn’t trying to make a violin or anything, just a small flute made from rock. If she got lucky, she’d have her own horse-summoning flute, and if she were really lucky, she might even have a unique mount or summon of some sort. Of course she would be happy if she were able to figure out how to make anything that produced sound, but what was the worst that could happen? An Alchemist might have accidentally found a way to create their own little golem minions from the mound of rubble, but Adler was more likely to create cheap jewelry or make a mosaic. That’s what she told herself, but the pile of rocks that were smaller than her fist grew steadily with each new crafting attempt, and she had yet to do anything about it.

In any case, the Ritual Guardian went straight home to her small flat with two windows and a small collection of what passed for art supplies in this world. She took off all her equipment and put them away before sitting down on the floor behind her little stool—her tiny table for the day. It wasn't that she needed a small surface to work on so much as she didn't have any better alternatives. Twenty five was still young; she wasn't as particularly bothered by roughing it out as older people who had less patience and waning health were, so it suited her to make do with what she had and save up for better things later on. Assorted materials and tools were spread out in a circle around her, save where three linear paths remained clear across it: first from the stool to the easel, the second to the bed and the rest of the room, and the third branching off from the middle of the second to grant access to the windows. Her basic wooden easel no longer held a piece of plywood; she had purchased a cheap wooden frame to hold and stretch her canvas while she worked, reducing the bleed caused by painting without one. Her brushes, old and new, were still on the window sill where they had always been, but she had no need of them now. The fledgling artisan had come a little farther with her skills, and she decided that better tools were in order, just as tougher armor had been necessary for her to fight stronger monsters.

Adler twisted around to her left and reached for a rock that was much longer than it was wide, the perfect size for carving down to a flute. The surface was harder and smoother compared to the others, chosen specifically for its being so. It was more difficult to work with than the stone she'd used for a friend's Frenmic Rabbit sculpture, but it seemed more appropriate to use than one that was more porous or had a pitted surface. Adler wasn't a musician, but she couldn't believe a clean sound could be produced if she were to carve a flute from one of the latter. Taking great care so she could finish the piece in one go, she gently tapped on her chisel with a mallet but couldn't make a dent. Unfazed, Adler tapped harder a second time, yet still it did nothing.

‘This is one hard rock.’ She pursed her lips as she guesstimated how much strength she'd need to apply to make an impression and, when she decided on it, swung down hard, somehow breaking the rock cleanly in half in the process. She smiled wryly at herself, thinking ‘Pathetic.’, then placed the two halves aside; she would have to add them to her pile of rocks carefully, lest she trigger a rockslide and destroy her carefully arranged room.

Several failed flutes and three hours later, Adler lay in her bed and stared at the mottled ceiling without actually seeing anything. It was said that persistence was key, but knowledge was fundamental, and Adler didn’t really know what she was doing. Ever since the first broken stone, Adler had been more careful with her attempts, filing rock with as much influence as a wave of seawater lapping at the cliffs. It felt like she wasn’t making any progress at all, and after an hour of not getting anywhere, she moved on to a considerably softer rock whereupon she realized her main problem—she had no clue how a flute worked or how its inner workings were supposed to look like. Just as an experiment, she carved a simple tube with holes in measured intervals, but when she blew into the hole designated for it, no sound came out. To be precise, there was of course the sound of wind being forcefully blown through a piece of rock, but there was nothing even remotely musical about it. She moved on.

The succeeding hours were spent carving multiple pieces of stone into a general flute shape, but Adler left the insides solid. The idea was still valid in her opinion, but she would have to consult a musician or take apart a woodwind instrument and figure it out herself; the latter was more likely—how many guitarists actually knew how to make one from scratch who didn’t start out as a guitar maker? Not many, she thought. And so, after carving half a dozen flutes from the highest levelled material she could work, Adler collapsed onto her bed and fixed her eyes on the ceiling as she thought over what the inside of a flute might look like.

It was a song that finally broke her out of her reverie. It wasn’t anything complicated—there weren’t even any instruments being used to accompany the singer—but whoever it was did start whistling a whole stanza to a crowd. Well, Adler assumed it was a crowd; the performance sounded like it was happening in the room across from hers so she couldn’t actually see who was in there and the music was faint, but over the cheers and banter, she could clearly hear the singer whistling. Now there was an idea.

The standard whistle most people were exposed to was the eponymous coach whistle; a small metal or plastic thing shaped like a thick number six or nine sans a donut hole, with a slit on top and a small ball within whose rattling enhanced the sound. One thing about working and being friends with dog lovers however, was that you eventually ended up learning about poop, illnesses, food, hydration, and whistles. The standard dog whistle was small, like a matchbox sized taco shell, but much thicker and had a narrower cavity between the U-shaped walls, and also had a hole in the middle of either side, like a paper clamp or like a straw had been used to puncture through it. The whistle was to go inside someone’s mouth, but not swallowed, open side facing out like a small duck bill. Adler could never get the hang of how to do it when Mary the Chihuahua toter tried to teach her, but she knew the design and at least it was something to show for her work today. She would have no way of knowing if it worked properly without finding someone who knew how to test it for her, but how hard could it be?

Adler got out of bed and crossed the room to look through her pile of broken rocks and found one that was the right size within seconds. It was white and a bit chalky, one of the softer stones that were easy to carve, and it fit perfectly in her palm. As she needed something slim to carve out the middle, Adler forewent the use of her kunai and picked up one of her sharpest chisels from the floor. She settled back down behind her small stool and went to work.

She clasped the piece of rock gently in her hand as she slowly dug, the flat edge of the chisel biting into the rough solid easily. It was as important to not grip a rock too firmly as it was to not put so much pressure on it that the rock might crumble and the carver would get a sliced up palm for his trouble. Rather than a slicing motion like one would use on bread or fruit, Adler made small scoops that made an audible grating sound as it left a trail of dust with each slice. She exerted more pressure when it felt like the rock could handle it, but she did everything slowly, preferring not to start over again and spend the entire day breathing in sand.

When she was satisfied with the cut, all that was left were the holes on either side of the taco-shaped carving. For this she kept the chisel between the walls so the puncturing process wouldn’t break the rock at the base of the ‘U’. She twisted the point of her dagger into the stone, utilizing the same grinding principle rather than a direct puncture. Finally, it was done.



A few minutes later, Adler knocked on her neighbor’s door. When somebody finally opened it, she flashed her brightest smile and said, “Hello! Can you teach me how to whistle?”
