The sound of metal clanking against itself was rampant in the forest this day. This noise came from a lone Samurai, running for his life, from several Frenmic Rabbits. Normally Frenmic Rabbits are docile, almost never attacking unless provoked by being struck first, and even then they normally flee. However the Samurai was not that lucky, these bunnies knew he was weak, so they pursued the fleeing Samurai through the forest.
Wermut turned and looked at his bunny pursuers, taking a note at just how many were chasing him. ‘Eight bunnies? Seriously?’ He thought, most of his focus kept on his legs moving forward. These rabbits were all four levels higher than him, it’s a wonder he has survived a couple of attacks so far. As Wermut was running, he came to a clearing of trees, but before running into the clearing he tripped on a root that grew above the surface from a nearby tree. His fall was probably one of the most comical things to happen to him. With a single “Woah!” he flew a couple feet forward, before landing face first and rolling into the center of the clearing. “Ow, ow, ow,” he groaned standing up and dusting himself off as the eight Frenmic Rabbits surrounded him. ‘This is it, I’m done for,’ was the only thought that coursed through his mind.
A little while earlier, it was Wermut’s daily trek into the forest. He had never really fought anything before, and really had fled from everything that attacked him. All he really wanted to do was relax in the forest. Before long, he was lost again. There was not a single tree around that Wermut remembered to find his way home. “Well, this’ll be a fun trip home.” He started walking faster and faster as the night got darker and darker, before finally he gave up. “I don’t think I’ll ever find London at this rate, best to get some rest and try again in the morning,” he muttered to himself, both annoyed and glad he was able to camp in the forest like he had done many times before. Camping always made him happy, but the dangers of doing so in Elder Tale always kept him on edge, forcing him to sleep lightly. A single mix-up, and he would revive in the town’s cathedral, which was a place he never wanted to return to again; the cathedral that is, Wermut loves London. The lone samurai plopped himself against a tree, preparing to sleep the night away, when he heard a squeak come from underneath him. He rapidly jolted upward to see what he sat on. It was a Frenmic Rabbit!
It wasn’t long before the bunny looked at him angrily, it chittered at him loudly which confused Wermut. Since when did rabbits make noise? He’d never heard one before. Suddenly without warning, the rabbit leaped and slammed into his chest, knocking him back a bit, right into another slam from behind which sent him falling on his face. Wermut scrambled to his feet, and looked to see who assaulted him from behind; he only found more Frenmic Rabbits. “Oh great,” he gulped, “Time to go!” Without a moments hesitation he bolted away from the rabbits. Any direction would be good since he had no idea where he was already.

Yelling. Screaming. Those were bad signs, especially when you heard them while walking through a low-level training ground. The Windsor Greatwood was meant for younger players to explore and level up their skills and abilities. It wasn’t often that someone was in peril from these monsters, as they usually were quite easy to kill, however just like anything, with multitudes of enemies, even a high-level player would find it difficult to defeat all the enemies, possibly several enemies that were above your own level. The HP that wilted away may look minimal if done by a single rabbit, but with several of those, even the mightiest of foes could fall. It’s like 200 zerglings rushing a single colossus. That colossus had no chance. Ryuu was meandering through the woods, trying to get closer to Sarum. He had taken the day off yesterday and had returned to the Guild House to do some paperwork and other things like that, and now he had to return to Sarum. That was when he heard a scream, almost like a woman’s, but it was unmistakably a man’s scream. The high pitch sounded artificial and the tracks that he saw on the floor were definitely that of a man’s.
Well, a person in need was a person in need. Ryuu moved as quickly as he could towards the voice, following the tracks that were in front of him. He noticed that there were several footprints that accompanied the humanoid’s tracks. It showed several different track sets, and he made out 8 different ones, all converging onto the humanoid. This guy is in serious trouble… he thought. He was fast, way faster than these rabbits, and so catching up with them was no problem. He didn’t need to use any of his skills to down the last of the pack, a level 4 Frenmic Rabbit. The death of the first rabbit made him think: If Kyuu finds out about this, I’m so dead, and unfortunately it was true. As sad as it was, he was killing her pet’s brethren, and well, sometimes it was a necessary evil, especially when someone was in danger. Obviously, even if he brought that to his defense, she wouldn’t even listen. All the words she needed were “Kumori killed rabbit” and that would be the end of Kumori’s day… Torture by her was long… long and ridiculous. All he could eat, once, was a big gourmet feast, where all of it tasted like terrible, terrible food. It was her way of tormenting Ryuu, especially when they had tasted real food already.
Ryuu soon caught up to the second of the level 4 rabbits, and downed it with a clean slice through its neck. Every single rabbit he killed, he increased the likelihood of torture, and with each rabbit he killed, the torture became 10 times worse. 1, it was 1 meal of terrible food. 2, it was 1 day of terrible food… There were 8 rabbits total in front of him… He didn’t want to think of the possible punishment he’d be going through for it. The third of the rabbits, he sliced right through it, quite easily, keeping a trail of rabbit right behind him. Now, there were 5 more rabbits, all level 5. Well, thankfully for him, they stopped chasing the Level 1 samurai and turned around to face the level 36 Assassin. “Took you guys a while…” he muttered under his breath. For the 3 rabbits to just sit quietly as he attacked the brethren, they really must have brought the person the pursued pretty low. Bringing up the stats of the Samurai, he noticed he was at 41% of his health. Ryuu shook his head. 8 rabbits against a single level 1. “It’s sad for you guys to gang up on him,” he said to the rabbits. He spun around and attacked each of the rabbits. With a clean cleave during his spin, he had sliced all 5 of the Rabbits. Ryuu flicked the blood off of his daggers and sheathed them. The blood that had splattered onto his clothes were still there, but since it was impossible to tell what kind of blood it was, he was safe. The only thing that mattered was the loot. “Hey, your price is to take all this Rabbit meat loot that I got, and to never speak of this to anyone, ever… I can’t afford to go without real tasting food for eternity,” he said sniffling, anticipating the torture that might come should his ‘little sister’ find out about his run in with the bunnies.
He hoped that was agreeable, because honestly, if it wasn’t, he’d just drop the loot and then somehow try to persuade this man that he was not to speak of this incident. He would plead, beg, grovel, whatever was necessary to get him to say yes. “There are certain people I don’t want knowing that I killed these rabbits… and if they find out, my life will be hell, and so for saving your life, seriously… PLEASE don’t say a word! That or forget I even exist,” he winked. He was trying to be as nice as he could to this guy so he would keep it underwraps. He seriously had no idea what else to say to him to convince him otherwise. All he could do was pray.

Wermut kept looking behind him as he ran, to make sure the bunnies still weren’t chasing him. They were, but much to his surprise, one of the eight had vanished. Every time he looked back, another had vanished, until there were five, then they all vanished. He was absolutely confused, and started backtracking a bit to see as to why they stopped chasing, and sure enough he found why. An assassin had been killing them one by one as they were chasing him, before they also noticed their numbers were dwindling and turned to fight their attacker. Pity for them, the man seemed really powerful since he was one-hit killing them left and right. This was the first time he had ever had a rescuer come to his aid when being pursued by enemies, and normally enemies give up after a certain distance; it was quite strange for them to chase this far away from their spawn location.
The Assassin turned to him and started practically flailing rabbit meat at him with his words. Wermut pointed to himself and stammered. “M-me? Keep all this rabbit meat? I suppose... but why do you not want to keep it?” Before he knew it, the man answered. “O...oh. So your girlfriend is one of those bunny enthusiast then?” Wermut’s eyes narrowed as he looked at the man. He kept his glance on him as he walked over and started harvesting the bunnies for rabbit meat. Wermut started muttering, whether or not the Assassin was responding to his phrase. “Stupid bunny enthusiasts... devil-worshippers the lot of them. Bunnies are evil creatures and are to not be trusted.” It was quite obvious by his tone as he spoke that it was laced with both sarcasm, and a serious hatred.
When Wermut first started this game, was the day he started his daily trek into the woods. Nobody but himself knew what happened on the first day, however what it was, was extremely traumatizing for Wermut. The first day he walked into the woods, was the day he was murdered by a single bunny rabbit. His failure to understand combat in his first encounter has haunted him even to this day, as a lowly bunny rabbit massacred him, and sent him to the cathedral for his very first time.

If Ryuu had water in his mouth, he’d have spit it out at the word “girlfriend”. Ryuu burst out laughing at his terrible assessment. He shook his head and continued to laugh, almost ending up on the floor and rolling. He began slapping his knees and then finally, after about 40 seconds of this, he cooled down and answered him. “No, no, no… my ‘little sister’ is the one I’m talking about. I don’t have a girlfriend... yet,” he said to him. He sighed and sat down at a nearby tree and crossed his arms, ready to take a nap. “I suggest taking a nap here and recovering your HP. At least, if I’m with you, you’re less likely to get attacked…” he said to him.
“Ahh, by the way… the name is Kumori… I’m an Assassin,” he said as he closed his eyes, trying to take in as much rest as he could. He really loved the quiet afternoon naps in the forest, where there was enough shade that he would be able to sleep in peace and quiet and not be woken but the cursed sun.
“So why were all these rabbits chasing you anyways? It’s not normal for all 8 of them to be chasing after you for so far… Also… it’s not normal for any level 1 player to draw Hate from all of these rabbits, unless you were doing something to annoy them,” he noted, “or you attacked all of them without killing any one of them and just kept hitting more and more until 8 of them started following you… Did you kill their mother or something?” he asked trying to understand the situation.

Wermut stopped harvesting the rabbits when Kumori started rolling on the floor, cocking his head with a ‘what?’ expression pasted across his face. After he calmed down, the expression vanished, and he listened carefully. A nap would be great, he thought, I’ve never been attacked around here while sleeping. Almost every enemy in the forest is docile, which typically means it’s safe to explore. As he walked over to sit next to a tree within talking distance of Kumori he made sure to check the ground before sitting. Last time he didn’t check he almost died.
Apparantly the man’s name was Kumori, and he looked around his age range. “Kumori, was it?” he didn’t wait for the expected following nod before continueing, “It’s a pity, you’d make a boyfriend.” He looked up towards the treelines and admired the sun as it pierced the canopy. “You can call me Wermut, and you probably already know I’m a Samurai.”
Wermut closed his eyes and listened to all of Kumori’s questions about the rabbits. He had no clue about most of them, but one he could answer. “I was going to take a nap underneath one of the trees like so, and when I sat down I heard a squeak. Before I knew what was happening the rabbit I sat on slammed into me, knocking me back into another slam... and then I was running for my life.” Wermut opened his eyes and, and decided to change the subject. The bunny fight was over, and he was alive; about time for them to relax. “Have you ever just stopped and laid down in the forest and listened to nature? It is a beautiful thing, really. I hope to find myself a woman that is a serene as the forest someday.” He sighs deeply, showing that he has no hope that he could in the game. Before long, Wermut’s eyes were closed and his breathing slowed. The scenery was too peaceful for him to simply stay awake, and he was starting to drift into a slumber as he has done several times in the past.

Boyfriend? Did he just say that Kumori would be a good boyfriend? Did he say he pitied Ryuu that he wasn’t a boyfriend? What? Ryuu looked at him and tilted his head in bewilderment. The guy had just met the assassin, and he had already made an assessment on whether he’d be a good boyfriend. “Umm… thanks?” he said with a questioning tone, unsure if that was the correct answer. Just answering back was already awkward enough, but thanking him for it, that was even worse. He wasn’t even sure if it was a legitimate comment. It was coming from another guy, no less, and for a man who wasn’t gay or bisexual, it was difficult to reply without feeling weird. He shook his head and replaced the awkwardness with composure. “Wermut, eh? Nice to meet you,” he said, trying his best to recover from the comment.
“Hmm… maybe you were sleeping on top of their burrow? I mean… some rabbits like to make them close to trees… they offer some pretty decent protection,” he said to him, “and maybe the baby ones were still inside the burrow, and so… the army of rabbits came to chase you all the way to high heaven,” he said, unsure of why the rabbits were chasing the samurai, but he figured the best guess was his. Usually they didn’t get that agitated unless something like their young was involved. He asked an interesting question, one about nature and the forest around them. “Of course, all the time… My guild members usually hassle me for being lazy sometimes… so I have to go elsewhere to enjoy my time… and most of them don’t know I go to training grounds to relax,” he said to him.
After the conversation ended, Ryuu would stand and look around him for any more rabbits that may have come by to attack the level 1 samurai. He sighed as he was sitting, now, upright against the tree, his leg tucked in to give him a bit more support. He saw that the Samurai was fast asleep, regaining his health. “Such tranquility… lucky for him…” he muttered under his breath with a smirk. He took out one of his throwing knives and marked the tree with a stylized F, his trademark that was labeled on all of the clothes he made, hidden from plain view. With no sound, he climbed the tree. Well climbed was the general term, but Kumori scaled the tree by jumping the branches. His agility was enough to propel him to each branch, and his finesse allowed his body to land with grace and without breaking any branches that could have impaled the samurai below. As he made it to the top, he began seeing a group Frenmic Rabbits approach their position. It seemed like they were not letting go of him until they got what they got what they wanted. Ryuu dropped down to the floor, using his legs as springs, mitigating the fall damage that may have happened to anyone else. He shook the samurai awake. He was almost at full health, and so Ryuu would help him get through the ordeal.
“There are about 5 Frenmic Rabbits coming our way. From what it seems, they’re level 3, all pretty easy to kill, but I suggest you kill what you can and tell me when you’re low on health. I’ll back you up, but you’re the star of this show. Even at level 1, you should be able to take 5 of these on in your sleep,” he said to him.

It felt like Wermut was only asleep for a very little time as he was being shaken awake at a moments notice by the Assassin that saved him. His eyes jolted open, showing that he wasn’t sleeping lightly, and simply nodded after Kumori told him the plan. “I’ll try, but I’m no good at fighting.” He blushed slightly as he remembered being slain by a single one of those rabbits at his level in the first day, and then closed his eyes and re-opened them with a new vigor. He stood up, drew his sword, and just practiced swinging. It was obvious from his form that he had never actually hit anything with his weapon before.
Before the rabbits came into sight, Wermut checked out his own health bar. Judging by it’s size, he was at about 80% life, maybe more, maybe less, but it would have been enough to take several hits from the rabbits, despite his wimpy equipment. He opened his skill menu, then closed it, then opened it again, and then rushed towards the closest rabbit, immediately activating Ace Move - Kabutowari, doing severe damage to the rabbit as it was full life. The rabbit backed up from the attack that took out over a third of it’s life, and stayed out of the range of Wermut’s sword. Before he knew it, two of the bunnies close to the first one tackled him in what felt like a combo attack. There was little to no opening to regain your balance after the first hit before the second came, putting Wermut at half and knocking him completely off of his feet, and then the third bunny tried to body slam him while he was on the ground. He luckily rolled away and got back to his feet before being hit, and took a defensive stance. This was when the last two bunnies, the one he hit, and one he hadn’t, attacked him. He blocked both, taking very little damage. “On second thought, you could help whenever!” Wermut yelled to the trees, not knowing where Kumori was, or if he was even there.

Ryuu watched Wermut fight the bunnies that were attacking him. He watched his stance. Well… stance was an overstatement. What he saw was a man who held a sword, not knowing how to use it or how to even swing it. His legs weren’t planted to the ground, his sword swinging in every single way, even though he used a single-edged sword. Ryuu smacked his hand to his face, trying to express his pity on the new warrior. Ryuu dropped down into the fray and killed the bunnies that were attacking him. He looked towards Wermut and sighed. “Please tell me you’ve at least seen some type of Samurai anime or show. Ruroni Kenshin, by any chance? Liken your stance and your swings like his. Spread your legs,” he said attempting to force Wermut to spread his legs further apart by using his own foot to kick one foot away from the other.
“Bend your knees,” he said as he simulated the same thing. He removed one of his Saya’s so that he would be able to copy the samurai’s stance of combat. He held the saya with his left hand, and the right hand gripping the Tsuka. “Assume this stance,” he said to him, “and strike like so,” showing him a quick drawing of the blade, causing an upward slash, and then flipping the direction of his blade by manipulating his wrist and swinging downwards, all the while dropping his saya and placing his left hand on the tsuka while bringing it down on his imaginary foe.
He then stabbed forward, and used two alternating side slashes, first from his right side, and then from his left to follow up. After completing the combo, he picked up his saya and sheathed the sword back into place. “That is how a samurai should fight. Now. How to use your skill. First, activate the skill using the menu, and try to physically and mentally remember the stance you are in when the skill is used. After you memorize that position, do it while trying to fight, and the skill should activate automatically, like so,” he said. He took out his right dagger again and faced the tree that they had been resting on earlier. He crouched down, placing his two hands behind him and kicked off of his left foot. As soon as his leg pushed off, he disappeared to the untrained eye and appeared right in front of the tree, attacking it with his dagger. “That is how you use a skill. Don’t bother using your menu unless you need to figure out the stance you need to be in,” he said to him.

Once again, the Assassin had to save Wermut from the bunnies, followed by several berations of Wermut’s fighting. Wermut knew that he couldn’t fight, but was he really that bad? It was a pity that he had never seen those sorts of movies; movies with fighting never really thrilled him. He had heard of Rurouni Kenshin before, but that was from one of his Otaku friend from the real world, who didn’t join him in the game. Before long his legs were being split apart, and he tried his best to keep his balance, almost falling over in the process. Then he was ordered to bend his knees. “Wha?” Wermut blammered, then he did as he was told, and of course his balance shifted and it became easier to stand. Suddenly we wasn’t wobbling all over the place, and not just that, but he was hardly moving.
Wermut watched Kumori show him how to swing his weapon, but after Kumori swung he had an idea. He was wielding a two-handed greatsword, why not swing it like one? His mind thought back to the time he was playing this old game called Dragon Age: Origins. It wasn’t his favorite game, and he didn’t get very far in it much like the rest of the few games he had. Thinking on the two-handed attacks he saw from the game, he held his sword vertically to his body, then followed up with two wide horizontal slashes that practically left him wide open, but it was better than nothing, before finally completing a full on overhead swing downward. The Samurai seemed to catch on, but using abilities from motions blew his mind.
To see what stance he takes for his only skill, Ace Move - Kabutowari, he uses it through the menu and dashes forward, cutting the air. “So that’s how it goes huh?” A couple tries, and he fails utterly. Kabutowari doesn’t activate, despite not being on cooldown, then an idea pops into his head. He turns toward a tree, and takes the stance before yelling. “Kabutowari!” What Wermut expected was it to fail, but immediately as he started yelling the attack, his body moved, and his sword was halted by the tree, embedding itself a couple of inches into it's trunk. Wermut pulled on the sword, but it was stuck. He pulled and pulled, until he finally used both hands and a foot to pull his sword from the tree, causing him to fall backwards onto his butt. “I... I did it!” He stood up, sheathing his sword and jumping high into the sky. “Did you see that!? I pulled off Kabutowari!” It was obvious the man was proud in his own ability, despite him still being level 1. The man’s face was practically beaming, and his light purple eyes sparkled as he looked at his sword in happiness.

“Good, good, now do that on the real rabbits… I think a few more are seeking revenge. Well, let me correct myself… there is one rabbit seeking revenge right now… the Level 2 Fenric Rabbit is coming for you.. this time, fight and win,” he said to him. He was still somewhat skeptical about the performance this guy was going to put on, but he did still hope that he would be able to take at least one of them down. He waited and watched for the rabbit to attack the wolf-hair.

“Huh, what? Another?” The man looked confused as he opened up his skill menu and activated his Battle Perception, causing his eyes to shift from a light purple, to an even lighter purple. His health was so low, that if he even wanted a chance, he needed to get the first strike in. Sure enough, a rabbit came bolting out of the treeline. It would have surprised Wermut, but he saw it’s name before it even came close to clearing the opening. Within a moments notice he took the stance for Kabutowari, and subsequently yelled the name aloud, dashing forward and bringing his claymore down on top of the rabbit. The rabbit was entirely surprised! It’s ambush was turned against it into a reverse ambush, causing the rabbit to scurry around in confusion. Wermut swing his claymore at it again, but missed due to the rabbit being small and quick. It ran around Wermut and attempted to tackle, and it connected, causing his life to drop 12%.
As he was hit, he caught himself on his sword so that he wouldn’t lose his complete balance, and then pulled the claymore out of the ground in one fluid swing. The rabbit wasn’t fast enough this time. It leaped directly into the full swing of the claymore mid-air, sending it spinning through the air a couple of feet. Six more seconds, Wermut counted in his head. Kabutowari would be usable again in six more seconds. The rabbit recovered from the hit, now being at below half life, it tried running around Wermut in hopes of tricking the Samurai. It wouldn’t be long before the he swung at the rabbit, inevitably missing and getting another hit by the rabbit. This continued another time, but his last slice collided with the rabbit, and the two hit each other. The rabbit slammed into the ground due to the overhead slash and Wermut stumbled into Kabutowari. The cooldown time was up, he finished the stance and yelled the full phrase. “Ace Move, KABUTOWARI!” He rushed forward within range of the rabbit and completed a quick coup de grace as it was still recovering from being slammed into the ground. It never managed to recover, the rabbit was deceased, and Wermut’s life was not looking very healthy. After finishing his first kill, he stabbed his sword into the ground and leaned on it. “I never want to fight a rabbit again...” He groaned as he fell to the side. His health bar was dangerously low, and his stomach growled loudly.
Wermut didn’t truly understand the system that forced him to eat. He hadn’t eaten in several days, and his stats had taken quite a blow because of it. At this point, he was within an inch of his life, and severely hungry, with not a single clue as to why his strength was vanishing.

After Wermut finished off the bunny, barely alive, he noticed the several status ailments that started appearing on his screen that told him of Wermut’s plight. Ryuu removed several items of food from his inventory and placed them next to Wermut. “This isn’t a game anymore… this is reality. Eat or you’ll in limbo appearing at the Abbey every 5 seconds,” he said to him. He then set a potion with the color of red next to the food. “Wash it down with that, you’ll feel better,” he said to him. He turned away and began walking further into the Windsor Greatwood. “Now that you know how to fight, you don’t need me anymore. Try not to die, eh? Add me if you want. I have places to be and things to do, unless there’s more that you need me to teach you,” he said, turning around once more waiting for his response. Wermut looked at the food Kumori had placed next to him. A brief moment passed before he just started stuffing his face full of food before the potion was placed nearby. Without a moments hesitation he downed the potion as he ate heartily, just barely noticing the Kumori walking off into the forest. Thanks to the potion and the food, he was able to gather the strength to stand, and he waved to Kumori. “Thanks for all the tips!” The man grinned and followed up, “Next time you see your sister, tell her hello for me!” As he said this he selected Kumori and sent a friend request to him, hoping he would accept it before heading back to devouring the food.
The food didn’t last long, and Kumori had long vanished into the forest. Wermut didn’t bother looking at his friends list to see if Kumori had accepted, and took note at how day was turning to night. It was strange, really, day turned to night so fast in Elder Tale. Perhaps it was Wermut actually having fun that caused time to fly so fast. It didn’t matter, he began his trek towards London, thankfully finding the right direction. Wermut hadn’t a clue that [Call of Home] was an actual skill, so he literally had to walk everywhere. Upon reaching London, he wandered back to the simple alley where he had drifted off into a slumber several times before.
