When Edward Paral first logged into Elder Tales under his nickname, Lax, he thought his real life was going to stay constant while his new “online life” let him do the things that he didn’t get to do in real life, like have friends and be noticed. He wasn’t prepared at all for his Online life to become his real life. When his eyes first opened and he wasn’t in his room but outside in the middle of London and he was wearing metal armor instead of just his boxers, it was pretty certain that he was confused. Although his movements in the plate armor were clunky and stiff, the black suit didn’t feel heavy at all, as if he was used to dragging so much weight around. ”Is this… Elder Tale?” It had to be. There was a Katana and Kunai on his hip, which had been the starting weapons he selected when he had been building his character on the screen on his laptop… But how did he get here? And where was he, actually? It looked like London, but there were so many people dressed up in the medieval outfits of the game. The new player stretched out his hand, as if by instinct, applying pressure to the air as if reaching out to the people milling about.
Suddenly, windows and interfaces appeared, showing various statistics and skills. Lax the Samurai with subclasses Blacksmith and Hitman… This was a role he could get behind. In his real life he had been unnoticed, unwanted, invisible. Here in Elder Tale, he would be seen. He would be seen, and he would be heard. People would know the name of Lax, not Edward Paral. Edward Paral the social outcast was dead. Lax the Hitman had been born. Walking through town with his sword over his shoulder, looking pretty “rough” in his own eyes, Lax was looking for a fight. He was a Hitman, a dirty, mean, nasty person, so he had to act the part. As we was walking his path intersected with a random Person of the Land, whom he promptly pushed out of the way. Because he was mean, nasty, bad. That’s who Lax was. Edward might not have been mean like this, but Edward was dead.
When an Adventurer didn’t let him get away with pushing them, he gladly drew his sword to fight them. The guy just laughed at the Samurai. ”Didn’t you read the manual? You can’t fight in Londinium. You get struck down by the Knights for that.” As Lax kept his blade out, he could see the giant suits of armor starting to descend from a portal in the sky, so he sheathed the blade. He didn’t want to die so easily. ”Hmph. I’ll let you off with a warning for getting in my way.” If he couldn’t fight in the city… then where could he fight? Continuing his journey out of Londinium into the close fringe of the Windsor Greatwood, he looked for an Adventurer to beat up. Surely he’d find someone he could beat some respect out of… oh… but wait… he didn’t know how to fight. At all. If he knew how to fight, he could get some respect. Because he was mean like that.
So, ditching the plan to find Adventurers, he went looking for monsters instead. Monsters were easy to find in the woods. He saw a rabbit looking thing, that actually looked like a real life rabbit, so he pulled up his interface. ”Level 1 Frenmic Rabbit, eh? I can beat that up no problem.” His Skills were a bit limited in offense, for now, but he had Auto Attack. What could go wrong? Lax selected the rabbit and then the Auto Attack skill, and immediately felt his body moving on its own. He resisted, cancelling the action. It had been too weird for him to handle, his body moving on its own. It wasn’t that he was being controlled, he didn’t feel pulled, his body just moved. He took a few moments to collect his thoughts and tried again. He selected the hapless rabbit and selected Auto Attack. His body once again started to move towards the rabbit, and he once again couldn’t take it and had to cancel the action.
Get it together, Edward… No, get it together, Lax. This is your home now. This is your life. Get it together and just attack the thing. For a third time, the Samurai selected the Frenmic Rabbit and selected the Auto Attack skill. He grit his teeth as his body moved towards the rabbit. He got there and his body paused before slashing diagonally with the Katana. And he hit…. grass. The rabbit had bounced away, recognizing the danger. In the hesitation before the Auto Attack realized, the stupid monster had run away. Lax, you’ll never be a good Samurai or a good Hitman if you can’t even land a blow on a rabbit. Try again, you fool. Picking himself up off the ground, he looked around for another target, finding another Frenmic Rabbit. Maybe it was the same one, maybe it didn’t matter. Either way, the new player got up and charged again, with the same result. ”What is it they say about the definition of insanity…”
Fed up with missing, even though it had only been twice, Lax just decided to charge it blindly. The Auto Attack just wasn’t working for him, as the hesitation was too long, so he ran up to the rabbit and just swung his sword clumsily. The sharp edge of the Katana hit the pesky bunny before it could run away, sending it sliding away, harmed, but still alive. So the secret is to just swing instead of click Auto Attack… I can do that. Facing off against a Young Pittered Boar, Lax wanted to test his only Skill. The description was clear enough, it was a fancy Parry, and the beginning of a combo chain. He didn’t have any other skills to chain it with, but at least he had a basic starter skill. But how to get this low leveled Boar to attack him… Attacking things never hurt if you wanted them to attack you. Charging at the boar, sword raised high, a single slash to its body got it riled up enough to respond by charging at Lax. The Samurai was caught completely off guard. He fumbled with his Interface, getting a stomach full of boar head instead of using his Samurai Skill Gonosen to parry the charge.
Getting hit by a boar hurt. It wasn’t pleasant at all to be hit in the stomach by a big Monster, and it sent Lax careening backwards. His mind was scattered and panicked, trying to use the Skill while trying to defend himself. The boar wasn’t running away, so in order to collect his thoughts, the Samurai activated Auto Attack. It felt like he was failing as a gamer, but he had to do it in order to survive. The boar died eventually, with Lax feeling less of a Samurai than when he started. He dropped to the ground in order to rest for a bit and get his HP up so that he could fight the next one with full vigor.
He found another one, and tried again. This time, he had his interface up and waiting for the boar to charge. He selected Gonosen as soon as he aggroed the Monster, which ended up being way too soon. His body moved, his sword raising upwards to block the attack, but the attack wasn’t there yet. His blade hit air, and the cooldown was far too long, letting the second boar slam into his midsection once again. His resolve was shaken again, and he tried to respond with a basic slash, but the big thing managed to dodge it… or he flat out missed.
The miss cut Lax to the heart. He felt defeated even as he selected the Auto Attack that he knew would carry him to defeating the beast. As his body went through the motions of mopping up the boar, the attacks felt lifeless and dull. It was a level 1 monster, and he had not only missed his parry by selecting it way too soon, but had also missed on the follow up attack. He had been unable to use his Skill to defend himself, and had needed to rely on Auto Attack because he had panicked in the middle of battle. That was no way that a gamer should act, that was no way that a Samurai should act. And it was definitely no way that a Hitman should act. Well… I’ve never been a gamer, nor a Samurai, nor a Hitman. It’s perfectly reasonable for me to need some adjusting… right? After moping his way into town and flopping down on a random street to sleep off his wounds, Lax decided that he’d practice more tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day, until he managed to use Gonosen effectively. If he didn’t… then there was no hope for him in this world, just like in the last world he had lived in.
