There were several things that happened in the past of Elder Tales. Much is the lore of what had created this world. It was a place full of technology, riches, normality. How long ago was that? It had to have been at least millennia… possibly longer. Where there were a few that prospered vastly, the majority of the world lived contently. There were outbreaks of war here and there, but nothing could amount to the destruction that had been wrought from that moment. But in order for me to explain to you that fateful moment, I must give you some information pertaining to it.
Life was bountiful far back in history, before the ruins of today were made. Things that could help you travel quickly from one place to another like magical wagons or large metal birds. The ruins of today can testify to the height of man-made buildings for merchants and residents alike. What were men trying to accomplish by building things so high? Did they not know the dangers of what goes up must come down? Probably not, but tangents are beginning to fill this story, so I shall move on. Where there are humans, power becomes something that everyone seeks and everyone wants. There was one man, his name unknown to us now, who had decided to make his claim as the ruler of the world. A bold claim, but he had what was needed in order to do so. It is not the amount of weapons or money that makes someone powerful… it is charisma; the ability to persuade the masses to follow you. The most powerful weapon is a voice, heard in all languages. However, the dangers of such a leader brought upon a certain mentality. Those who were not like us were to be tortured, killed, or jailed. They were to become slaves to the masses. A cycle of the world had been complete. Slaves to freedom and back to slaves.
This man had humble beginnings. You may have heard the legend of the Spear of Destiny or the Lance of Longinus. These are one and the same. The spear, having once been in the possession of many powerful men in the old world, was the creator and destroyer of worlds. This is the origin of it all, the most legendary of what has made the world it is today.
From Alexander the Great to Napoleon to Hitler, the Spear of Destiny fell into the hands of few, but its effects were great. Filled with a legendary effect… to give power to a single man that would soon bring calamity and destruction where he walked. All for what? All for their own power and hunger. Cursed by the blade to become harbingers of death, these men walked the earth with a purpose to conquer and overcome what was not theirs. However, as was the curse, there came the want and need for more. That ultimate brought upon the destruction of these powerful men. One were able to take over the entirety of the world, but if you look back, the empires of each of these men had increasingly increased in size, and so the last of these men who took charge of the Spear of Destiny, he was able to take control of the world. With the necessity of everyone learning a common tongue, one man was able to take control. One man was able to speak out to the entirety of the world and to gain followers all across the land. It was facilitated by everything that man and nature had to offer.
This man, although his name was lost, had considerable power. Armies rose for him. He had no need to ask for power. People gladly gave him an army. People gladly gave him their money. People gladly gave him their livelihood. He destroyed technology, knowing that it would bring about his destruction should it be allowed to continue and grow and to evolve. He took away everything that belonged to the people. He had bought the people of the world with the simple idea of a dream. Where the masses follow blindly, they will see only a false light that is truly darkness.
Why? All for the promise of a better tomorrow. A promise that had not been fulfilled, full of possible riches and possible rewards. All unrealized, only to enslave those who followed him and to destroy those who didn’t. While the powerful had many, it was then that the people realized their folly. They followed a man who spoke well, but did not follow a man who meant well. Their result? The necessity for rebellion. The necessity for destruction. The end all calamity… it is what we know as the first apocalypse, where the world collapsed and the result was left with only children being available to carry on the future.
The group of rebels were the family members of those enslaved. They were the ones who were hiding away from authority, doing what they could to survive. They lived off the land and worked together. They established a government system that was thought lost. They had become a boon to humanity, a possible salvation to the world. Alas, they were small, but even a pebble is enough to set off an avalanche. They fought this empire for decades, until finally they had seized power of their own. They had developed the usage of magic. With technology forbidden in the entire world, the people had to devise a way to protect themselves, something just as powerful as a gun or a car. They developed skills that would seem superhuman. Where the empire excelled in technology, the rebels made up for it in skill and magic.
There was an elite group of these people… they were leaders to the rebels. You will know them as the masters of each class. They each had a skillset enough to take on the empire head-on, however divided, they would fall. It was together that they could conquer any feat. One man in particular, his class an Assassin, had led the darkest of missions to be completed. His name was not just for show, as his duty was to kill and destroy with a single strike. A master assassin, a master at stealth. He completed his task without fail, but his weapon was one you would not expect. This assassin had stolen the Spear of Destiny, but as it turns out, he had tamed the cursed thing. How did he do so? He changed the very nature of the weapon. What once was an armament for long range, he made into a dagger. The blade was enough, and so what it had done was taken away a defining feature of the Spear of Destiny. He knew held only destiny within his hands. The legendary assassin was one of the reasons the empire began breaking apart. This assassin was wise. He had given leadership to be equal amongst the classes.
Thus was the first famous blade of assassin. While its power resides well within the dagger still, its curse was broken. The Spear of Destiny was now a dagger. It carried the weight of the new world on its shoulders. It carved a path for the new government in order. It had prepared something much more for the world than expected. It had created something beautiful instead of destroying it. Be wary, traveler, for those who venture out to find this blade are destined to fail. I pray that you continue this journey with caution.
