'Urgent, urgent, emergency!'
These were the words Capsule sang in her head as she left the safety of London to venture out into the Savill Grove. This was her first official quest since the Catastrophe struck. Up until now she had stayed within the confines of the non-PvP area, afraid that she would encounter one of those roving bands of PKers she had heard so much about.
Capsule was of course not going to venture too far into the unexplored terrain. A single woman out by herself was rarely safe from the thugs that took advantage of the isolation, no matter how brief. She knew this because she had lived in an area rife with poverty and crime. Her brothers and parents never permitted her to go out on her own when she was younger. Papa Pfieffer May have seemed like a frightening man, but he would tear apart any man that dared to harm any of his children, a fact that went double for her. Confrontation and violence made Capsule dreadfully ill, transforming the small woman into a frightened rabbit.
Just the thought of being mugged or dragged into an alley for worse caused her to stumble. Here, in Elder Tale, she was a few inches taller. It was the only true alteration that was made to her avatar. As the shortest member in her family, Capsule always felt like a mouse. She had always been a small child, so her growth spurt when it came could hardly be called such. Her father and mother were sure she would spring up later, like her oldest brother who had been even smaller. It was only in games like this that Capsule could be her ideal height. She was still adjusting to her new body, but tripping was far less frequent now.
"Now, where is he?" One of the People of the Land was supposed to be around here somewhere, unless she was mistaken. The "NPC" she was looking for was the one that gave the quest out. Rather than venture out further to find him, though, the woman chose to sit down on an old stomp sticking out in the middle of the flower field. It would be best for her to wait for to come out this way. If she went out on her own right now, she would only find herself lost and may end up injured - or much worse.
Not one to dilly dally, Capsule played around with the system interface until she found what she was looking for; her small collection of quests. There were a few she had accepted a while ago but never got around to completing, like her current one. It was a simple "fetch" quest, one that suited couriers such as her, but also attracted others who could aid the courier in case a battle occurred. Bandits were reportedly one of the big concerns out here, and not just the expected beasts that roamed about. 'PKers,' she thought with some apprehension.
The main goal of this quest was to deliver some packages to an elderly woman who lived and worked out on this field. Why she would want to work out here was beyond Capsule's understanding, but it wasn't like there was anything truly dangerous out here. It was true that there were some hostile rabbits and boars, but they generally didn't attack unless struck first - or so she remembered. 'Oh, who are you kidding? You're too chicken shit to actually put up a fight to something as small as a rabbit.' As long as that was all she had to face, though, things would be fine. She had the Inversion skill to direct unwanted attention away from herself, after all.
She turned her head to gaze over the flower field, which was rather beautiful in the light of the morning sun. A low shout reached her ears while she watched two rabbits tousle with each other in the grass. To her far right, one of the People of the Land was approaching, a second person accompanying him. Capsule dismissed the second person as another of the "NPCs" and went back to gazing at the field as she waited for them to approach. Those packages the first held made her back ache in sympathy. 'It's nothing I can't handle, I guess.' Someone as skinny as her would normally feel the weight of those packages rather quick and become overburdened, but that was less prevalent here.

The world is a dangerous place, and if you sit around wringing your hands about it, you'll miss out on all the adventure. words 739 Short notes | With a stab and a slash, Indy finished off another green slime that burst and disappeared before his very eyes. He flicked its residue off his rapier before returning it to its scabbard. Then he stretched his arms into the air as he yawned. Killing random monsters was quite boring, and Indy would have preferred to venture out into the wilds and explore this new world that he had been suddenly brought into, but because he decided to start the game all over - in a new server that was closer to home - his strength and skills were back to its most basic level.
As much as he didn't want to, training and getting stronger was much more important than his need to explore. Adventures can wait. He needed to become strong enough to be able to handle anything that came his way first.
He glanced around the field and, seeing that he had finished off most of the enemies hanging around in the area, moved on to find more places with monsters. The day was still young, and he wasn't tired enough to put an end to his training. As he walked, he hummed a soft tune to himself. Then thinking quickly, he pulled out the violin that he had equipped and positioned it between his head and shoulder.
The high-pitched, squeaky sound that he produced with it was excruciatingly painful, making the blond haired man wince in pain. Indy was disappointed to lose the skill to play the instrument, when he knew how good he had been before, back when he was playing in the Japan server. But he stubbornly continued playing, knowing that it was the only way for him to become stronger and improve on his skill.
"Oh god, stop it! You're going to destroy someone's eardrums with all that screeching!" Someone wailed. The sudden cry froze him in his tracks, and the hand that held the violin bow slowly lowered to his side as he turned his gaze in the direction of the voice. He saw a young man, with both hands pressed against his ears, making his way towards him. Indy waited for the stranger come closer before he responded with a mischievous grin on his face.
"Just the eardrums? A shame. I was hoping to destroy more than that." He chuckled softly when he saw the frightened expression on the other person's face, and immediately returned his violin to its proper place before lifting both of his arms up in a placating manner. "Please, accept my apologies. I often practice alone to avoid such disturbances. I had no intentions of destroying anyone's eardrums, I assure you." The other person squinted his eyes at Indy, staring warily at him for a few seconds, before lowering his hands to his sides in reluctance.
"That's all right I guess. Anyway, you're an adventurer right?" Indy nodded to him in response, and saw the young man's face brighten up. "Then you're just the man I need!"
The young man - whom Indy discovered was one of the People of the Land - began explaining his request to the blond haired man. He needed someone to deliver a package to an old woman who lived in the area. And although he wasn't a Courier, the quest seemed simple enough that even someone like him, who didn't choose that class, could do it. As soon as he agreed, the NPC took out a package from his bag and held it out to him.
Indy was about to take it from the young man when he caught sight of someone else - a red haired person - sitting on a tree stump not far from where they were standing. The blond haired man opened his status menu and discovered that he was looking at another Adventurer. He paused, thought it over, then shook his head at the NPC.
"Would you please excuse me for a moment?" The young man glanced at him in confusion, but nodded and followed Indy towards the red haired person. When the blond haired man was a feet away from the other, he placed a hand to his chest and gave a small bow in greeting.
"Good morning. Forgive my impudence, but intuition tells me that you've been waiting for this man to arrive, so you can take his quest. If you're not against the idea, I'd like to propose that we form up a party and do it together."

Capsule watched with quiet curiosity as the two presumed People of the Land drew near to her. Something seemed a little off about one of them, though. The blond haired elf was shorter than her current body, almost at her true height, but the way he carried himself was different from the usual. There was something very "noble" about his posture and way of speaking. The redhead looked from him and to the taller NPC, who was wearing some rather ragged and weather stained clothing. If the two of them really were People of the Land, the blond would be the taller fellow's lord or master. The fact that the blonde was wearing the typical cloth armor of some of the less sturdy Adventurers made Capsule think otherwise.
'I guess I can't refuse him. Beggars can't be choosers, after all.' He didn't look like a spell casters, so hopefully he could play the role of melee while she provided support - assuming they ran into some trouble, anyway. She stared up blankly at him for a moment before bringing a hand to her mouth and emitting a low chuckle. "You have a peculiar way of speaking, Blondie, but I could really use the help. I've seen safer slums than this area, and I'm not talking about just the beasts." The area of Dresden she lived in wasn't so bad, but there was still the occasional mugger or stray dog to watch out for.
She slowly rose from her stump, dusting off the seat of her pants as she did so. 'It looks like he's about five or four inches shorter than me. I'd say he's about two inches taller than I actually am.' Had she not fibbed about her height in-game, she would feel rather comfortable being around him, and not covet his height like she'd had with her brothers. Instead, she felt a little superior since she was not the short one for once. At 5'2, it was hard to find another adult to tower over. "Ah, here," she said as she poked and prodded at her interface until the party request system appeared, and sent the man a request. "The name is Capsule, by the way. I presume you chose something like "Prince" or "Lord"?" He certainly looked the part, so she wouldn't be surprised if he had chosen a rather pompous name. 'I really hope he can pull his own weight. The last thing I need is a so called "man" who is afraid of getting his hands dirty.' This was important if she was to rely on him to supply the muscle.
The NPC with the package smiled at her and dipped his head in a lazy bow. "It looks like I've got myself two adventurers here! The youngster with whom I was arranged to meet, and this fellow."
Capsule nodded. "Yes. The quest states that we're to take this package to the old woman that lives in this area. Is there...anything we should be concerned about?"
The man tilted his head slightly to the side as he thought. "Well, there are some pesky Frenmic rabbits that have been digging around the area and ruining a few flowers, but they should leave you alone. It's the boars and dull green slimes you need to watch out for."
"There aren't any…" Capsule gulped as she struggled for the word. "Player killers around here, are there?"
The man shook his head, looking very appalled by the idea. "Oh, good heavens no! Not lately, anyway. There was some problems a while ago, but they usually waited until nightfall before causing a ruckus. They don't seem to like the idea of attacking in broad daylight, when most Adventurers are coming to and from town."
"Alright. Thank you for the information."
"Thank you for delivering this package for me. Tell Ida I said hello!" The NPC shoved the large package into Capsule's arms and was gone in a flash.
"I've got it," she proclaimed protectively, in case the man offered to hold it for her. She balanced the package on one arm as she activated her Checkpoint skill, causing a pillar of light to a good walk away. Whether or not the man could see it was unknown to her, so she felt the need to point out the general path they would be taking. As she readjusted her arms so that they were carefully cradling the package, Capsule glanced over at the man to attempt a bit of conversation.
"I'm an enchanter, courier and pharmacist. You?" It looked like they would have a bit of a walk ahead of them, so it couldn't hurt to be a little social. Words:779 Notes:Follow the yellow brick road!

The world is a dangerous place, and if you sit around wringing your hands about it, you'll miss out on all the adventure. words 576 Short notes | Indy smiled when the red haired Adventurer - who turned out to be a young woman, judging from the sound of her voice - agreed to his proposal and got up to her feet. He widened his eyes in surprise and quickly took several steps back when he realized that the other person was a lot taller than he expected. If he hadn't moved, he would be forced to crane his neck up at an uncomfortable angle, just to look at her face.
The blond haired man was not new to the experience of being shorter than someone else, but this was the first time he met a woman who was a lot taller than he was. Standing beside her made him look like a small child who was accompanying his mother.
He wondered if she made her character taller than she actually was, in real life. Many players have done it to hide their unwanted physical traits. Indy, on the other hand, was part of a fraction of players who chose to create their characters exactly like their real selves. He was grateful for that decision, since he didn't have to adjust to the sudden change in his height - like others have been forced to do. Not that he had expected this to happen to them.
While Indy was pondering these thoughts, the red haired woman sent him a party request and introduced herself as Capsule. She went on to ask him about his own name, and he couldn't help but chuckle at the guesses she made.
"Prince? Lord? No, that would be too presumptuous of me. I'm not a prince, nor am I Lord of anything but my own household." His eyes twinkled in amusement as he went on. "I go by the name of Indy in this game. It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Capsule."
He hung back as the NPC began to discuss the details of the quest with the red haired Adventurer. He listened attentively to the questions and answers that were exchanged between the two, then followed Capsule's example in thanking the young man as he handed the package to her and walked away.
Indy observed his companion, raising an eyebrow in amusement when he saw how tightly she clung to the package in her arms. It was clear to him that she wanted to carry the package by herself, and would reject his offer to help. So he smiled and nodded to her silently, respecting her wishes, then waited as she did something with her interface - unseen by him - to point out the general direction of their destination. Afterwards, she turned her gaze to him and spoke once more.
"I'm an enchanter, courier and pharmacist. You?"
"A Bard, a Scribe, and a Pathfinder." He replied. After answering the question, he looked down at himself and adjusted the weapon hanging on his belt, making sure that he would have easy access to it. Next, he fixed the violin that was strapped to his back so that it wouldn't fall off when he started fighting.
"I'll take the lead and be the one to attack our enemies first, while you serve as my support." He told her. After making sure that he was prepared and ready for the quest, he looked up at the red haired woman and smiled.
"Shall we?" With those words, Indy took the first step forward, moving in a straight line in the direction Capsule pointed out earlier.

That was an odd choice for a username, though she was hardly within the right to point this out. Her own username was a musical, manga and drug reference all rolled into one. 'He could just be a music fan, I guess.' If there was another meaning it was entirely lost on her, and she didn't have the time to concern herself over it, either.
Capsule's ears pricked up a bit when Indy mentioned his classes. "That's an interesting combination." There was a small smirk of amusement on her face. "Our skill sets are rather compatible. I may need a new grimoire and map at some point." This was mostly in jest, of course. They had just met so neither of them owed the other anything more than common courtesy.
She fell in step beside the man, making note of the rapier and violin he fiddled with for a few seconds. Asking him to make her a grimoire would likely be out of the question if his main reasons for taking scribe were to write sheet music or make maps. This was assuming she stuck to grimoires, anyway. Magitech was something that had recently caught her interest.
The redhead hugged the box tighter to her chest as she stepped further and further away from the safety of London. She was glad to have the safety net of her Call of Home skill and a "meat shield" available, but couldn't help but feel dependent and weak. 'Maybe I should have grabbed a sword like Indy. Maybe then I could have -' Capsule jumped back, just out of the way of a large, trundling boar. "Eeeeek!"
The boar tossed its head back and snorted. "Where did you come from?!"
The tuskless boar just continued to grunt as it shuffled closer, the tip of its nose twitching fervently. It was ignoring Indy to follow her around. "Go away! Leave me alone!" She waved the package at the boar in a threatening manner, but it only reared up and thrust its nose at the box. "Just what is in this box, anyway?" If she lowered the box a little, the boar did likewise until its snout was level with it. If she suddenly jerked it to the side, the boar jerked that way, too. There was clearly something edible in the box that the boar wanted, but she could not allow it to have any of the contents, lest the quest fail.
She retreated behind Indy, but of course the boar would try to follow her. ”Indy –“ Capsule was forced to dance back and away from the greedily snorting pig. ”Kill it while it’s distracted.” She darted around the man and twirled in a circle, cradling the box closer to her chest now. The boar twisted and turned with her, grunting impatiently. ”No. Back. Go away. You’re going to regret this~.”
If the boar could understand her, it certainly didn’t seem to care. If Indy weren’t here she would have ran to protect herself and the package. ’Stupid boars bossing me around.’ Words:511 Notes:t(ツ)_/¯

The world is a dangerous place, and if you sit around wringing your hands about it, you'll miss out on all the adventure. words 500 Short notes | "My current skill levels are quite low, but once I improve on them, I would be more than happy to provide you with a map and a grimoire of good quality." He told her with a smile. Then he lowered his gaze, tapping a finger to his mouth as he thought of the things he would have to do to see to her request.
I'll need parchment, quills and ink. I would also like to create the map with my own perspective, rather than make a copy of the ones that NPC stores provide. To do this, I have to explore and mark locations I've visited with a notebook - which I'll need to create first.
A grimoire, on the other hand, would initially require a lot of magical research before I can attempt to create one. The longer he dwelled on what he had to do, the longer the list in his mind grew. This is going to take me a while to accomplish...
As the two Adventurers continued walking, Indy's thoughts were interrupted by Capsule's sudden cry of surprise. He looked over his shoulder and saw a boar trying to get closer to the red haired woman. She constantly stepped back, away from the creature, and ran around in circles with Indy standing at the center.
She should have been strong enough to take care of it on her own, but it looked like she refused to do it - or couldn't - which made the scene appear even more amusing to the blond haired man. He began imagining the theme to Benny Hill playing in the background and let slip a chuckle that he quickly tried to cover with a cough.
"You have such an avid admirer, Miss Capsule." He said, once he felt calm enough to speak without bursting into laughter. "I think the two of you would make quite the couple."
”Indy – Kill it while it’s distracted.”
Indy said nothing, but he took a few steps forward, waiting for Capsule to run past him again. Once she did, he stuck out his foot in the boar's path. The creature running after the red haired woman tripped on him and rolled away, sliding across the ground. Indy pulled out his rapier and went after it, walking towards the pig in a casual stride.
He knew that he was successful in drawing aggro to himself when he saw the boar slowly get up to its feet and squeal angrily at him. He quickly closed the distance between them, and attacked before it could act. His strike was quick, the blade shooting forward and running through the creature's body. After a few more swings and strokes, it died and exploded into nothing.
After looking around to make sure that there were no other creatures nearby, Indy sheathed his weapon then turned his gaze to Capsule."Are you all right?" He asked with concern. As funny as it had been, he did feel bad for what happened to the red haired woman.

If Capsule hadn't been so preoccupied with running for dear life evading the boar's advances, she would have jostled Indy around for his teasing. The man stopped fooling around when she asked him for his help, though. She heard the squeal of the pig before she saw it tumble to the ground, thanks to the other adventurer tripping it. Capsule came to an abrupt stop, almost sending herself tumbling to the ground. She turned and peeked cautiously at the man, who was now finishing up the creature.
The boar went down in a few swipes of Indy's sword, and shattered into a mess of gold coins and items. Capsule lowered the package she hadn't realized she'd thrust out like a shield, and flicked her eyes away from Indy in some mild embarrassment. He'd done in mere swings what would have taken her a good few minutes or more to do - assuming she'd have the balls to even go through with an attack.
The woman straightened up, feeling a bit sheepish now that the boar was gone. She nodded at Indy when he asked her if she was alright, and gave a simple "I'm fine." As much as she disliked confrontation, she might seriously have to work out a way to defend herself when necessary. Inversion wouldn't save her all the time, nor would her legs be able to carry her away as fast as she would like. Her legs may not have been short and stumpy like they were in the "real" world, but there was bound to be someone faster with higher endurance.
For a moment Capsule said nothing. She had turned around again to face the direction from whence they came, not really staring at anything in particular. When she finally moved again, it was to shuffle over to Indy's side and give him a curious look. Before her courage could give out on her, Capsule asked the question that was prodding at the back of her mind. "Aren't you scared, Indy? Not of the monsters, per se, but well...this isn't a game anymore, and although it's not like that one game where you die in real life if you get killed within the game, death is still something to be avoided, ya know?" She absentmindedly took a few steps forward, eyes lowered to the ground. Sure, people were capable of being revived down at the cathedral, but that didn't make dying seem any less horrifying to her.
"I guess I don't understand how so many Adventurers seem unaffected by this and continue to fight." She had no idea how long they would be stuck in this world, but she was willing to adapt to it for as long as it lasted. This didn't mean that she wanted to do so to the point of having great difficulty to adjust once - or if they got out. Dying, even if you were revived into a new body (as the rumors said) was bound to affect your mentality somehow. Capsule wanted to avoid death as much as possible, and usually did (or had) a good job of doing so in games. Dying either meant that someone had gotten careless or she had not been effectively healing herself.
"I don't mean to discredit any of your help, mind. I'm just...I envy you, I guess. I ran around like an idiot from a low level monster while you calmly took it out. This wouldn't be a problem if we were just playing a game. Those are just pixels, not real, living creatures. Here, though…" She broke off and shook her head. "Never mind it. We should really get this box to the old woman before more of those boars show up." Capsule took another step forward, mentally berating herself for her sudden solemnness. "Sorry about that." The world is a dangerous place, and if you sit around wringing your hands about it, you'll miss out on all the adventure. words 566 Short notes | A few seconds passed, with neither of the Adventurers saying a word. Indy politely looked away from the red haired woman, allowing her some bit of privacy as she recovered from the battle. From the way she handled the situation, he suspected that she wasn't used to fighting and had been frightened by the confrontation. He wouldn't want anyone to witness him in his vulnerable state, and so showed her the same courtesy he would want to receive from others.
Eventually, he heard the sound of footsteps, and looked back to see Capsule walking up to him. She seemed hesitant to speak, but he could see a hint of determination in her eyes, that gave her the courage to start. Indy stayed silent and listened to her question attentively, knowing that this meant a lot to her, and that teasing or making light of it would insult her greatly.
By the end of her speech, she looked embarrassed and hurriedly brushed the topic aside. She tried to walk away, but he rested his hand on the hilt of his rapier and jogged forward to catch up to her.
"Miss Capsule, wait." Whether he was able to walk beside her or was still following from behind, he spoke loudly enough so she could hear him. "May I be honest with you? As calm as I appear to be, I'm only human. I do worry about death. And I agree that even if we are assured of never dying in this world, death is never a pleasant experience. I would like to avoid it as much as I can."
At that point, she came to a halt, and he slowed down until he was able to face her properly. "I suppose the reason why I persist in fighting, why I choose to go out of the city - despite the dangers it holds - is because I refuse to let that fear hold me back." He smiled as he lifted his gaze up, staring at the clear, blue sky above them. "I do it to explore the beauty of this world, and to discover what it has in store for us. If I'm lucky, I might also learn the reason we were brought here, and how we can return to our old world." He added with a noncommittal shrug.
"Not to mention I have the benefit of being an experienced fencer. The pressures of battle are not new to me, and I'm quite familiar with facing - if not death - at least the fear of pain and losing against my opponent."
Indy empathized with the red haired woman. If he didn't have his experience in fighting with a blade, he wouldn't have been as calm as he had been when he fought the boar.
Stopping to reflect on the gravity of their situation or worrying about what was to become of them. would do nothing but depress him and keep him from moving forward in life. Which was why he did his best not to dwell on such thoughts and simply lived in the present.
"I can help you become more familiar with fighting, if you wish. You could duel with me constantly, so you will become accustomed to the mental and physical strain of combat. It will also assure you of your safety, for I will never go so far as to kill you." He offered with a small smile.

Capsule had anticipated some comments from Indy, so she did not protest when he called out to her. She came to a stop but did not turn around. This did not mean she was ignoring the man, though. It was more like she found moving to be a hassle, so chose to stay still. That changed a bit when Indy spoke, as she couldn't help but turn her head towards the sound of his voice. The sincerity in his tone seemed legit.
As it turned out, there was no need to turn and address him, for he had taken the initiative and stopped before her. Capsule tensed up for a moment, then relaxed as Indy continued. She nodded in understanding as the meaning of his words sank in. "I see. I suppose it makes sense when you put it that way." She gently cradled the package to her chest, a small smile forming on her lips. "Like flies and their short life spans. They don't live for long, so they try to live to the fullest, even at the risk of being swatted or sprayed to death." That probably wasn't her best analogy, but she was sure Indy would get the gist of what she was saying.
She scuffed at the ground with the toe of her boot. "I admit to being an overly cautious person, even in games. Sometimes I wish I could be more adventurous, but I learned at an early age that that would only get me in trouble." Capsule's father had some very strong opinions on girls who were as rowdy and curious as boys. Going out to slay dragons was just not something he would accept from the "fairer" sex.
"You were a fencer?" Capsule didn't mean to change the subject, but that was a bit of a surprise to hear. 'Or is it really? Why shouldn't a guy like him be proficient with a blade?' Had this been medieval times, Capsule was almost certain Indy would be a young nobleman or knight. 'And you would be a poor village girl or his shoe shiner.' Well, whatever the case, they were on equal standing in this world. Indy just had the combat prowess on her, but it was unlikely his social standing here was any better. Such was the beauty of being reduced to level one.
The light lull in conversation was filled in by Indy this time, who actually offered to help train Capsule in the ways of combat. The redhead almost dropped her package in alarm, images of her brothers having mock sword fights with sticks clouding her vision. "Did you just - really? Me?! I've never even held a sword before, nor do I have anything better than my starter wand and grimoire." She was aware that she was babbling, but found it impossible to restrain herself.
While it was common knowledge that enchanters could use one handed swords alongside magically enchanted weapons, Capsule had refrained from choosing one, favoring a tome and wand instead. She had a staff as well, but that was to stay nestled in her inventory until she was at a level high enough to wield it. Though, given her limitations, it might be best to have a sword forged later so she could wield it alongside her tome. 'I can't believe I'm actually considering this.' As much as she disliked the idea, Capsule would have to get over her fears and adapt to this new world, where danger lurked outside the safe zones. She couldn't stay locked up forever.
It was perhaps a good thing that she had the package to hold; otherwise her hands would be shaking uncontrollably by her sides. "Y-yes. I would like that very much, Indy." She gave him a strained smile. This was the hardest step for her, and it would only get harder as they went along, but it was for the best. "We can make arrangements later," she said with a smile that was more relaxed than her last. "For now, we should work on getting this package to its owner." The world is a dangerous place, and if you sit around wringing your hands about it, you'll miss out on all the adventure. words 551 Short notes | Indy chuckled, amused by Capsule's surprise. He smiled and nodded in reply to her question. "Anyone can learn how to duel, if they show an interest in learning. But I wasn't referring to teaching you how to fight with a sword. After all, the game allows you to use weapon skills instantly, even if you don't have the experience. I don't think I can teach you something that the game cannot do for you in that aspect." He took several steps back from Capsule, pulling out his rapier before performing a series of swings and stabs at an imaginary opponent. After the brief exhibition, he stopped and held the blade parallel to himself.
Fencing was more of a hobby than a passion to the blond haired man. Since he enjoyed doing a variety of things, he didn't mind sacrificing what could have been a career as a duelist to explore many other fields of interest. But he was still grateful for the skill, because he learned a lot from it - not just how to wield a sword.
"Dueling isn't just about determining who has the better swordplay. It's also a mental battle - a contest of wills. Like a game of chess, you must learn to predict your opponent's moves and counter them with your own. What I seek to do is help you become more familiar with fighting, so you are able to respond swiftly at any given time. As long as you stay calm and think clearly, you have a chance of winning even against those who are stronger than you."
When the red haired woman expressed her interest timidly, Indy smiled at her in return. "Then we are agreed. Once we finish our errand, we can begin discussing schedule and lessons. I look forward to dueling with you, Miss Capsule." He knew that fencing - or any sports for that matter - helped a person gain more confidence of himself. He believed that Capsule would be less shy once she was certain that she could protect herself in this world.
"For now, we'll continue as we have before. I shall take point and clear our path of monsters, while you stay behind me and act as support." He returned his rapier in its scabbard and started walking once more. He still knew the general direction of where they were supposed to go, so he didn't need to ask Capsule.
A few minutes passed before he spotted another boar running up to them. Before it could get close, he rushed forward to meet it head-on. He opened his interface as he did, scrolling through his skills to use Elegant Act. His body grew even lighter, and with quick footwork, he danced around the boar, moving behind it to run his blade through its hide. The attack pulled its attention to himself and away from his companion.
The boar angrily charged at Indy, but the Adventurer's evasion rate was higher than usual, so he was able to dodge and evade it easily. He left small cuts all over its body whenever it went past him. This pattern of evasive attacks continued until its life ended with an explosion of light. He glanced sideways to check on Capsule, and saw something else coming closer.
"There's another boar behind you Miss Capsule!" He warned her.

The way Indy described dueling really threw her for a loop. She had assumed he meant dueling in a physical sense, not as a force of wills like chess or other logic games. 'That's how bad I am with the concept, I guess.' She had flinched a bit when the man pulled out his rapier and swung it around in the air, afraid that he would actually advance on her. She felt a tad silly when that turned out to not be the case, but also oddly reassured. 'Just stay calm, like Indy said.'
It was advice she wasn't expecting to put to use so soon.
Only a few minutes passed before the next boar came streaking in. Indy ran in to intercept it before it could reach her, clearly fiddling around with his system interface as he did so. 'I guess he likes it the hard way.' Using the system was fine from a mouse and keyboard perspective, but could be a real pain in the ass from a personal standpoint. It was fine for simple, non-combat situations, but Capsule had only found it to be inconvenient and awkward when she tried using spells. 'Plus, it just feels natural to rely on your body and not the system.' Indy didn't seem bothered by it, though.
The man danced nimbly around the boar, evading its attack with an elegant ease, and swiftly put the young creature to death. It just looked so easy when he did it, yet she know that she would have some great difficulty if she tried to take on an enemy by herself. 'What am I gonna do, anyway? Whack it to death with my grimoire? Poke its eye out with my wand?' Neither were as effective as the man's sword, even if it was starter gear. 'It's still better than what I have - '
The warning yell from Indy snapped her out of her daze. "Eh?! She glanced behind her and saw it - another young pittered boar, headed straight for her! Capsule bit down the squeal that was building up within her, and instinctively held the box out in front of her like a shield. "Oof," she cried out as the boar struck the package and shoved her back. She was lucky that the little creature hadn't grown its tusks yet, else it would have gored her and really hurt the young woman.
Capsule backed away, gasping in pain as the crushing sensation in her chest subsided. She fumbled with the wand tucked between her belt and armor, and pulled it out to point at the boar. "Inversion!" The move was almost instinctual, but she knew it would work if she did it this way. A white beam of light erupted from her wand and struck the boar head on. The boar spun around to face the opposite direction, where it grunted in confusion. When it turned back to presumably reestablish its charge, Capsule waited for it to gain a bit of momentum before casting Inversion again.
This time the pig tripped and fell, leaving itself open for attack. Capsule could fill the chills going down her neck and spine as she replaced her wand with her grimoire. She opened the book and held it out in front of her. The few pages it possessed fluttered in the still air, a light magical aura surrounding it and its owner. A violet colored ball of magical energy surged out of the book and struck the hapless boar. A high pitched squeal rent the air as a second ball collided with the boar's body. It was easy to deal with the boar if she just pretended that this was a game, and not a life or death situation. One third and final ball of magic was enough to incinerate the young boar, which then rained down gold, meat, items and much needed exp.
A warm sensation flooded into Capsule's body as she felt herself level up. 'Eh?!' She had only fought one boar, but still leveled up. 'Maybe it's because I'm in a party with Indy, so exp is shared.' She felt a bit like a leech if that was true. 'Well, who am I to look a gift horse in the face?' She wasn't sure if she should feel happy about killing the boar, since she had technically been playing a role just to do so. 'But it helped, though...right?'
She smiled timidly at Indy, her grimoire now tucked under one arm for safe keeping. "That's the first thing I've killed since we were transported into this game. It feels...really strange." The word she was looking for was "exhilarating," but those were dots that would not connect while she was still hopped up on adrenaline. The world is a dangerous place, and if you sit around wringing your hands about it, you'll miss out on all the adventure. words 611 Short notes | Upon seeing the red haired woman facing the boar courageously, Indy visibly relaxed in relief. It looked like she was going to try her hand at fighting. He smiled, silently wishing her a good luck against the monster. He believed that she could do it. But even if she couldn't, he was there to make sure things didn't become too dangerous for Capsule.
But it was a good thing he didn't have to fight the boar, for more of its kind came running towards them from the same direction the creature he killed earlier had come from. He spun around, flicking his rapier to the side, and waited for the first of the two to close in on him. He swerved around it - slashing down on its side as it passed by - then thrust the blade through the second as soon as it collided into him.
The blond haired man reeled back slightly from the force of the blow, but he dug his foot into the ground and pushed back even harder against the creature. Then he pulled his weapon out and slashed at the boar a few more times. While he continued fighting it, the first one he attacked slowly turned around and prepared to run back at him. Indy hurriedly killed the former with a few more hurried stabs, then watched it explode in a bright light just before he staggered forward from an unseen force - which probably came from the charging pig.
He fell as the other creature roughly knocked him down. Before he could crash to the floor, he pressed a hand to the ground and dropped to one knee, gripped the hilt of his rapier firmly in his hand, then swung the blade around and behind him, striking at the boar before it could get away. Afterwards, he twisted around on the spot and lunged forward, stabbing it twice more.
As he rose and stepped back from the pig to take a breather, he heard Capsule's voice and turned his gaze in that direction. He could see the red haired woman standing not far from him, with the package still safe in her arms. A small smile was on her face, and Indy couldn't help but notice that the boar that was previously coming at her was now gone. He nodded back at her, grinning as he did.
"Battles can be overwhelming at times, especially since this is your first. I applaud you on your victory." He was happy for her, since she was able to get past her fear and face a monster on her own. She even managed to kill it without much trouble. "With the way things are going, you might not even need my help in becoming an experienced fighter."
Indy was interrupted when he heard the sound of snorting and turned back around to see his opponent charging at him again. "Whoops, pardon me. Where are my manners? I almost forgot all about you." He assumed a better stance and struck out just before it could crash into him. A second later and he would have been too late. The boar squealed in pain and anger as it felt the blade run through its flesh, then it exploded brightly and dropped coins and items to the ground. The blond haired man gave a sigh of relief as he straightened up and returned his rapier back into its scabbard.
"Almost had me there. Now then," He turned his gaze to Capsule and nodded. "Perhaps we should move quickly, before more of them arrive. I fear that as long as our quest isn't finished, more of them will come to intercept our path."

The sense of victory Capsule felt was unfortunately short lived, for two more boars were coming round the corner. Capsule closed her eyes and clenched her teeth, emitting a soft squealing sound. The sight of two opponents at once made her uneasy, especially since they were now ganging up on Indy. "Indy! Watch out," she cried out a bit belatedly. Indy was already in action, and had slashed into the hide of the one of the boars before turning to lash out at the other. Capsule was immobilized, utterly unable to so much as flinch away. She had no idea how Indy was able to hold his own against two foes at once, or how he was able to keep his cool as he dealt with them. 'He's a maniac.' She would have ran by now if she was in his position - if she could even get her legs to move, that is.
When Indy turned to address her and ignore his remaining enemy, Capsule couldn't help but flail her arms around in alarm. 'What on Earth is he doing?! Turn around, you fool!' She wanted to run up to him and knock him out of the way, but also did not want to put herself in danger. 'neep.' The redhead just stood in place, her hips twitching slightly from side to side as she fretted over what to do. In the end she just stayed where she was, and watched as Indy remembered the boar and turned to confront it.
The redhead breathed a soft sigh of relief as the man vanquished his opponent, but did not immediately move when he suggested they do so. Capsule lowered her head for a moment, mentally coaxing herself to calm down and proceed. She wouldn't be able to move at all if she allowed fear to grip itself around her. 'Just remember - the faster you finish this quest, the faster you can go back "home".' She tightened her arms around the package and grimoire, her breathing now calmer than before.
Once she was sure she wasn't going to bolt in fear, Capsule took a few uncertain steps towards Indy, stopping short of colliding into the short man. "L-let's - ahem - let's hurry and get this over with." She glanced behind her, sure that she had seen something gelatinous rumble by, but saw only a harmless rabbit hop out of a bush. 'Gelatinous? Like sentient jello?' It was a silly thought and clear sign that her imagination was starting to get the best of her. 'Well, there are slimes in this area - or were when this was a game, anyway.' She had not seen any since the Catastrophe started, mostly because she had done her best to stay away from combat zones. 'I really don't want to run into any right now, either.' Just the idea of having to hack into the body of one made her queasy and grateful for her grimoire and wand.
With one shaky finger, Capsule used her Checkpoint skill to check the path to the old woman. A pillar of light appeared, not too far from their current standpoint. They could reach the woman in five minutes or less if they hurried. "Come on," she cried out as she took several steps forward, almost tripping over her own feet. The world is a dangerous place, and if you sit around wringing your hands about it, you'll miss out on all the adventure. words 403 Short notes | The blond haired man supposed that it was too much to expect that Capsule would become energized and excited after her first kill. She took a few minutes to recover, then moved closer to him and urged them to go on. Indy was more than happy to oblige.
He followed the red haired woman as she took a step forward and started walking, with the Bard using his skills to keep an eye on their surroundings and make sure that no creature could catch them off guard. It was easier to do it as they traversed through the open field, where there was no place in which one could hide.
The flowers scattered across the ground painted a pretty picture, and if they weren't currently on a quest, Indy would have taken his violin out and started playing. As much as he wanted to, he couldn't play any song that would match the muse that had been brought out of him by the scenic view. He would only ruin it with his low-level playing, and most likely attract even more attention from the monsters in the area. Not a good idea when you're on a quest and not too eager to fight unnecessarily.
The two Adventurers were coming up on what some might call the home stretch. He couldn't see any indicator that they were arriving at their destination, but he could see a solitary cottage, with smoke rising out of its chimney, growing larger as they drew closer. Seeing as this was the only place of residence he could see within a hundred meters of the area, he had a good guess that this was the home of the old woman they needed to deliver the package to. He needed to be certain of it though, so he turned his gaze to Capsule.
"Miss Capsule, have we arrived at our goal?" Whether he got an answer from the red haired woman or not, his attention was diverted from her to another group of monsters that were headed their way. They were still a long way from them, and it was only through Indy's heightened senses that he was able to spot them. He frowned as he moved to stand in the stampede's path and pulled out his rapier again.
"Miss Capsule, you must hurry and deliver the package to the old lady. Then once you find an opportunity, run." He told her.

While Indy ran alongside her, scanning their surroundings for any signs of danger, Capsule kept her eyes glued to the front, focused on the now invisible pillar in the sky. Maybe it was just her innate good sense of direction, or the perks of being a courier, but despite the fact that she could no longer see the light, she was certain that they were heading in the right direction. There was no need for a map when she could follow her own intuition.
Capsule could smell the cottage before she saw it. There was a faint smell of burned waste - mostly leaves, trash twigs and the like, a smell that grew stronger and stronger as they neared their destination. The smell, though heavy and oppressive, was oddly comforting. The smell of burned garbage was then overcome by something that reminded her of the holidays and large dinners with relatives tightly packed in the dining room, like a tin of sardines. The old woman was making a meal of sorts, one that was likely much too large for a party of one.
The redhead's stomach rumbled with hunger as memories of roasted duck and goose flooded into her mind, but then was dashed away as the back of her mouth recalled the bland food the People of the Land (and system) were capable of making. The duck or whatever the woman was cooking would taste of uncooked tofu, all a flavorless, but pretty, meal. It was like taking a beautiful girl to bed, only to discover that she had no idea how to use it.
The cottage grew nearer and nearer, a bit smaller than expected, though it was surely one of those cozy homes once you were inside it and not just simply gazing out from a distance. "Yes, this is it," she said. Capsule hugged the package tight to her body as she began to cross the last few stretches before them. Indy's words held her back for a moment, and when she turned her head to see why he had instructed her to run, her heart jumped into her throat.
Beyond Indy she could see the silhouettes of several monsters approaching. "?!" The redhead did not stick around to see the short elf engage the monsters in battle. She chose to force her eyes away from the sight, and sped towards the cottage, her feet thudding heavily into the ground with each step. 'I hope he's alright.' She wasn't going to be turning back to help him; she couldn't. The thought of being overrun by monsters and sent to the Cathedral to respawn terrified her more than anything, and would surely have her freeze like a deer caught in headlights if she hadn't made herself move.
The door to the cottage was thrown open a few seconds after the woman rapped on it with the point of her knuckles. An elderly, smiling face greeted her, then faltered when it noticed the distraught look in the younger woman's eyes. "Oh, my stars and garters -" The woman was not allowed to say much more than that, as the package Capsule had carried this far was shoved into her fleshy, pale arms. The old woman, who looked like a loving grandmother and smelled of roast duck and freshly baked cookies, gaped at the retreating figure of the redhead. The contents of the package were unimportant, and the greeting from the Person of the Land was forgotten.
Capsule never stopped running. She took an alternative path to the one the monsters were taking, and as if she were afraid of turning into a pillar of salt, did not dare to glance back at Indy and his opponents. The woman did not even stop to consider shooting the young man a friend request so that they could keep in touch. If fate willed it, they would meet again. If not... The world is a dangerous place, and if you sit around wringing your hands about it, you'll miss out on all the adventure. words 981 Short notes | He smiled as he heard Capsule's retreating footsteps, and felt some of the tension in his shoulder loosen up. Good. She'll be out of harm's way. Then he took slow, deep breaths as he mentally prepared himself for the battle. The four boars were still charging towards him, and there was no stopping them. He didn't have any skills to distract them, neither did he have a means to escape the fight. He wasn't fast, so even if he ran, they would surely catch up to him.
Being outnumbered was nothing new to the Bard. He had fought against many creatures alone before, but he was about to face them at his lowest level. He wasn't sure if he could make it out alive without a healer to make sure he didn't lose health points and die. It's going to be a very close fight...
He was being honest with Capsule when he said that he didn't want to die. The thought of being dead for even the briefest amount of time was frightening, even if he was going to be revived right afterwards. And he didn't want that kind of thinking to affect his view of death - or living for that matter. Just because they won't die, doesn't mean they could relax and take it easy. Life isn't fun if it's too easy.
As the group of boars continued making their way closer and closer to Indy, he activated Elegant Act. He narrowed his eyes in concentration and prepared to attack, gripping the hilt of his rapier firmly in his hand. The ground trembled as the creatures charged in as a whole, like a strong wave about to crash onto the shore.
With another deep breath, Indy took a step forward then started swerving around the running boars, his blade flicking out to stab each one he dodged. Once the last of them was behind him, he dug one foot into the ground and twisted around before rushing after them.
The blond haired man completely took his opponents by surprise. Before most of them could turn around to fight back, he had already swung his rapier around and attacked the ones closest to him. He focused on taking them on one at a time, while dodging the other boars that attacked. His skill won't last for long, so he had to hit them hard and fast, while it was still in effect.
With his level, he was able to kill just one. The creature exploded in bright lights and dropped items and coins on the ground, just as he felt the effect of his skill wear off. At that moment, the remaining boars rushed in to ram their heads at him. Indy was able to dodge two of them, but was too slow to get out of the way of the third. He grunted when the other butted its head against his back and sent him crashing to the ground.
The first two were quick to regroup and attempt another attack. Indy didn't even bother to look over his shoulder and simply rolled to the side - expecting them to always fight in a linear pattern. He was rewarded when they ran past him and gave him an opportunity to nick their sides as they did.
There was no time for him to take a breather as he saw the third boar headed towards him again. The blond haired man let out a short curse before pulling back his sword-arm. He waited for the creature to come even closer to him before he thrust the rapier through its body and ended its life. The collision lowered his health even more, but thanks to his act, there were only two more boars left.
His health bar was becoming dangerously low, but so were the two boars'. Indy pushed himself up onto his feet and waited for the creatures to make their first move. His patience paid off as one stomped its feet on the ground then rushed head-on towards him. The Bard took a step to the side and stuck out his foot to trip his opponent. It rolled away and was currently out of the fight as it struggled to its feet.
That left the other boar, which seemed to be more cautious than its companion, choosing to remain where it was instead of blindly attacking. Indy didn't mind making the first move this time. He leaned forward a little then kicked off the ground and rushed at the creature. When he thrust his blade forward, it smartly moved to the side. But Indy had a longer range of attack than a boar, and spun around as he swung his blade in the same direction, slicing across its flesh with a deadly blow.
He picked up the sound of running feet at the same time his most recent kill faded away. He turned around and caught a glimpse of the last enemy before it rammed its head against his leg and threw him back a few inches. Indy stumbled and fell on his bottom, though he never dropped his weapon. Thanks to that, he was able to thrust it through the boar and watched as it too transformed into gold coins.
The silence that followed after the fight was deafening. The blond haired man breathed heavily, his hands trembling slightly as the adrenaline coursing through his body wore off. His health was almost gone, and if there had been more of them, he was certain to find himself reappearing back at the cathedral. Fortunately, it didn't come to that point. He closed his eyes and fell back on the ground as he let out a sigh of relief.
It was probably dangerous for him to lie there in a monster-infested zone, but at the moment, all he wanted was to stop and appreciate his good fortune. I'm still alive...thank goodness.
