He thought he was smart. Jay had always been a bit of a proactive kind of guy. He was the first of his friends on this server. It was fine, they were going to be there with him soon. They were all going to have fun and conquer this new world. They were a band of brothers, close knit and birds of a feather. All the pretty flowing words that meant they were familiar with each other. He wasn't with his friends right now though. For some reason their dimly lit gaming hole turned into a bright world.
He was on his back, blinking the haze out of his head. He had no idea what just happened. One moment he was excitedly watching as his game was loading, his friends cheering as their computers did the same. Why, he thought to himself, what did he do to deserve this? His first thought was aliens. An apparent lapse in time had happened, he was sure it was night and he was sure he had been indoors. He sat up finally, he felt perfectly fine. The slight daze was more a headache from the change in the light. In fact, he actually felt fantastic. Looking up, light rays poked through the trees. Taller than he was by far, but hardly redwoods. Light danced on the tiny particles that danced in the air.
He looked down to his hands, they were his hands, his dark reddish brown slender fingers each reacted to their orders to move perfectly. He didn't remember putting on this trench coat though. He felt it between his fingers, it was very nice fabric, but it looked familiar. He contemplated that as he began to stand up. He looked himself over, down this fancy coat was a flower pattern. It wasn't always visible, fading in and out depending on how the light hit it. He was mesmerized by it, he didn't even bother to inspect the pants he was wearing. Boots didn't even come to his attention, what really grabbed him was the sword and book attached to each side of him. Suddenly, it all clicked.
Smacking his forehead, his hand slowly slid down his face as he let out a slow sigh. He was dressed as his character from Elder Tale. His newest one, the summoner that he had made for this new expansion. Just as he was thinking about how it happened he noticed the red tint in the corner of his eyes. His hand reached for his hair and pulled it down. Blinking, he took a minute before he finally recognized what he was looking at. His hair was dyed.
He let out a howl of laughter, his friends really got him. The thought that his friends may have been the culprits had crossed his mind. He was scared they had drugged him or got him blackout drunk, but looking at the apparent work they put into it, he instantly forgave those rascals. The coat, the sword and book, even his hair, they really got it all down pat.
Then he heard it, a swishing sound. His ears shot up and he looked around as he started to duck. It had scared him, he had no idea what that was. It stopped though, whatever it was behind him must have been startled by his own movements. Slowly he turned around, now very conscious of the sound his feet made with the dead leaves crunching underfoot. Blinking, the forest suddenly looked terrifying. The bright sky could barely break through the canopy, any light that shone through was practically a godsend.
He was alone, whatever scared him somehow managed to disappear without him seeing or hearing it go. He looked around, thinking to himself. This forest was eerily quiet. He took a deep breath, this was getting scary. It probably wasn't suppose to be. His friends knew he was a bit of a chicken, they were probably laughing their heads off right now. The thought calmed him down and he just shook his head. A smile came across his face, they were awful those guys. Then it happened again.
The sound was the same. A chill ran up his spine. He knew that sound. It was the sound of something rubbing against fabric. His breath caught in his throat. His ears were high now, rigid as his heart danced. He blinked as he slowly unbuttoned his coat. He peeled it off slowly, off his shoulders, his hands through the sleeves, down his back, off his tail.
Wait, no, that's not right. While he was taking off his coat, he felt it snag. It didn't faze him at first. It was just something he did to get his coat off, whatever was on it would end up off of him as well. His eyes trained on the new appendage. It just curled around, he was trying to of course. It just naturally moved around to him, like he was curling a finger. A white tipped fox's tail. It was amazing.
This had been scaring him. Now he was less scared, more confused. How in the world did this happen? How was he now the owner of a tail? What was the word for it, vestigal tail? Was that a word? He didn't know, his mind was racing and it was hard to think straight. He dropped it and let it hang behind himself. He paced around, holding his face or putting his hands on his hips. His mind would just trail right back around to where he started. He was in a forest, he looked almost exactly like his new character, and he didn't remember what he assumes is most of the night before. Now he was stuck in a quiet forest, by himself with an errant appendage. That was a word this time, but he didn't know if he used it right.
He just decided to get out of this forest, grabbing his coat, he put it on gingerly. He was now very aware of the presence of his tail. It easily slipped through a hole that was clearly tailor made for it. Shaking his head again, this time out of exasperation he just looked down at his feet as he rubbed his face. His hand reflexively ran through his hair. It was a bit more than he remembered. Passing over one his ears, he scratched it slightly and went buttoning his coat. His hands fell to his sides when he was done. Slowly his knees bent and he lowered himself to the ground.
He put his hands over his face as he lay face down in the grass. He had fox ears. Of course he had fox ears. He had a fox tail. That would just look stupid. You had to go all the way. They reacted, they turned, they perked up and laid down. They were his own ears. He didn't have his old ears. That would also look stupid. Who needs two sets of ears? Slowly he got up, he looked up at the sky. He had idea what was going on. His friends couldn't do this. How could they? Were one of them secretly conducting experimental animal appendage grafting projects. If they were of course amongst his band of nerds and weirdos they'd all know. There weren't any secrets that big amongst his friends. He was just somehow one of his characters from Elder Tale. Somehow he had completely become KaKuJi. Why not KaKuJa, that was his favorite. He probably would have noticed something was amiss far sooner if he was KaKuJo. He was just glad he wasn't KaKuJu. He shuddered at the thought.
Now he was more motivated to leave. He slowly slid the sword out of it's sheath slightly. It wasn't plastic. He put it back, it clacked back into place and he thought to open his grimoire. Maybe that had spells, he scoffed. He didn't want to accept his situation. There had to be a better explanation. There were of course cartoons about this entire predicament. He watched a few episodes when he was a kid. They weren't his favorite type of cartoons. He had more of an interest in giant robots. Maybe if he had been more attentive he would know what to do.
He slowly walked through the forest. The scenery around him was unsettling. It was only intensified by the amplified sounds of his own footfalls. It was just him by himself. He hadn't seen another soul for fifteen minutes. He was just grateful he hadn't run into any monsters. Naturally, as he thought about it, something else came rustling through.
It was a dull green slime. He didn't recognize it by how it looked. The name was just floating above it. That cinched it, he was in a game. He let out an unintentional moan, all his composure left his body with the air. He was done, the slime seemed to have noticed him. It was just his luck that they targeted mage characters. It wasn't an aggressive monster, but it was still slightly acidic. That was the fluff reason for why it'd hurt if it touched you. He wasn't going to just let it burn through him though.
He pulled his sword out and pulled his sword out. If he really was his character, all he had to do was shout a few words and make this thing die. He was a believer in macros. Fortunately for him, he set his golem summon to a simple few words. He slowly walked backwards, his spellwalk skill would let him summon a golem and keep the slime from advancing right on top of him while it happened. He breathed in deep. He wasn't about to die here.
He could feel magic, the moment he pulled out his grimoire he knew what to do. The book lit up as he began. "I call upon the earth, I pray that she deliver unto me minerals that shall be bound by my will to do as I bid until I return them from whence they came," his incantation began. "I seek the companionship of a warrior of stone, sturdy and stout," the special lines for a stone golem went that way and he finally found his last line. The earth shone as a magic circle appeared before him, "Golem of stone, child o' the earth and my soul, I put you under my contract. Do as I command for it is I who moves thee." The golem climbed from the dirt. At 3 feet, it wasn't what he entirely expected, but he did just summon a golem. He blinked, his tail wagged excitedly. He just performed magic. He just made a monster rise out from the ground. He was about to kill another monster with a monster. He finally understood the interest in this sort of setting. It was amazing.
His golem clashed with the slime. It rammed it's fist into the slime repeatedly. The two fought for a few minutes. Trading blows, but it was clear who had the advantage. The slime slowly eventually over and died. The body burst into technicolor bubbles and left some coins behind. He was dumbfounded. His golem had hardly taken any damage. It just stood though, it almost looked like it was proud of itself. KaKuJi smiled, he through his arms in the air and hollered. A triumphant crow, he was elated. He dashed forward dropping his weapons. He stopped before his golem and bent down wrapping an arm around his new little buddy. It just stood there as he hugged it. He was so happy he didn't know what to do. He shook his head slowly and smiled. "Alright little guy, you are like my life saver right now," he held it by the shoulders and looked what he hoped to be the face. It mostly just looked like a very small person shaped mound of rocks. The little things of moss were a nice touch on the shoulders and head.
Standing up, he patted the little guy's head. It looked up at him, confirming where the face was. Without much else said, the two of them finally set off to explore this forest and hopefully get out.
