Day 5 as a Heretic, early evening. Snow was beginning to fall in the walled city of Stratford. The Alchemist glanced out in the distance, sighting Mt. Snowdonia in the distance. It was nearly Christmas and she wondered what the holiday season would have brought to the Adventurers. She recalled the past few Christmases and wondered how her former world would have been. In reality, she was Touko Kouzuki, a Japanese-British university student. She wondered what would have happened if the Apocalypse had not happened. Would she have headed back home for a few weeks and enjoyed the season with her friends and family? In fact, the place where Stratford stood in this land was most definitely based on Stratford-upon-Avon in the real world. Shakespeare's birthplace. It would appear that the legend had transformed itself into something that was familiar to her, given that her hometown would have been only a few kilometers to the northeast. Of course, Stratford wasn't the quaint town she had known. Instead, it had become a revolutionary new city in this incarnation. But that didn't stop her from heading here anyway, after word came back from the scouting guilds that it existed. Midori had made her way to the new city of Stratford by following the new route north of Londinium. It was roughly about a few hours' ride toward the new destination; she had arranged and hired a Person of the Land to take her to the new destination by carriage. It was becoming an increasingly popular destination for Adventurers willing to travel somewhat farther away from their home in Londinium. Much as Sarum had been the western frontier for a while back for scouts, this new area was becoming the next biggest hotspot for researchers. After a number of crafters had taken off toward the new area, they brought back a number of new inventions and crafting recipes. Given that the status of this new city was very modern and well-organized compared to their otherwise relatively decrepit Londinium, new technology would certainly have made their progress more worthwhile. The former Sorcerer had taken some of the recipes she had jotted down from the crafters' master lists back at British Royal News HQ. The hot new item for the Alchemists was a magitech device that was supposed to be able to nullify telepathy communications within a small distance. This recipe was apparently negotiated among the Stratford Wardens by Adventurers who had taken up their class. Of course, since Midori was a member of their rival class, she couldn't have just requested the recipe herself. Instead, she had to use the sources available to her. The recipe required for a Telepath Countermeasure consisted of a Magitech Conductor, an Unstable Mana Core, and a Reinforced Wire at the minimum. As those items were not something she had recognized immediately, the Alchemist had to spend that morning jotting down notes on the needed materials. First, she was to create the Unstable Mana Core. It was a simple recipe, simply done by fusing two Mana Fragments together and keeping their power optimized at maximum potential. The side effect was that the Mana Core was true to its name, a volatile item that would burn itself out if left alone. She would need to place it into her inventory as soon as possible. The Alchemist tossed two Mana Fragments into a steam oven as she awaited the result. The facility where she was currently crafting the Mana Core belonged to the Wardens. She needed to keep her class's identity a secret, or else their facilities would be shut to her. It was for this reason that she had set her class information to private. Suspicious, yes, but there was a bit of an unspoken courtesy among crafters. As long as one was hard at work in creating something for the pursuit of improving technology, main classes didn't matter. It was getting a little cold. Tonight was a relatively quiet day at this part of town, as the Wardens and townspeople were busy celebrating the Harvest Festival. There weren't many Adventurers who had arrived in Avon just yet, so the Heretic was able to have a clear view of the rest of the crafting district from her position at the corner of an outside square. The lamps in the streets had turned on, illuminating the work area. She was the only crafter here in the square, as empty pottery wheels, woodworking tables, furnaces, and even a giant cooking cauldron stood by their lonesome a few feet away. She figured everyone else must have gone for dinner. Her puppet Allul-0 laid against the side of the machine as though it were a sleeping child. Or rather, a sleeping child-shaped mannequin.
