A basic gear piece that allows a small machine like a music box to run for a few seconds. It's said that the Industrial Revolution guild is trying to make this concept work on a larger scale. Its utility depends on the level of the materials used to make it.



Basic Music Box

A small toy that can play about a few dozen recorded notes in repeat as long as it is winded. It comes in a rather old and flimsy wooden box, and its utility depends on the level of the materials used to make it. Keep in mind that this is only the music box's mechanism, considering that many will also want to collaborate with a woodcrafter to make a nice box to hold this item in. The Mechanic that crafts this item may decide what song it plays.)*

‘Alright, let’s get this show on the road. Blue wants a music box and I’d love some chalk to draw and mark things down.’ Bailin thought to himself, rummaging through his garage to find the needed parts for the wind up mechanism.

‘Last time I used a gear, coil and screw. That ought to be good enough for this one as well, though I should make a real effort out of this as it’s not for me but for Blue. It would be a shame if I were to deliver rubbish.’ Bailin thought further, looking for some decent parts in his garage. Finding the parts he needed Bailin put them on his workstation. There he focussed on what he intended to make, visualising what he had done before when he tried to, and succeeded, make his first music box. “Alright, so the coil should go there, the screw should go there and the cog should go there. Next attach those there, there and there.” He mumbled to himself, working from his memory as he recollected his previous crafting attempt to create a music box, as well as picturing the process in his head via his mental image.


Next he placed each part on the correct spot and attached them together to form the wind-up mechanism he intended to make and use for the music box that was intended for Blue in exchange for some chalks.

‘I would love to have a chalkboard, just think of the possibilities… I could draw things, write things on it, and calculate and so on. Maybe even think of some new mechanisms or improve the ones I do understand… which would be great, because this system works, but I don’t know… it just doesn’t feel right….’ Bailin thought to himself as he gently took the bits apart again, happy he didn’t secure everything as he had last time.

If one were to walk into the garage they would see Bailin standing with three loose parts in front of him on his workbench, a blank expression on his face, his eyes staring into the great void beyond.

One would probably say Bailin stood there, motionless for at least five minutes. Normally someone would be sunken deeply in thought, whereas Bailin’s mind was a bit slower. He had loosely assembled the parts the way he wanted, but something did not feel right at all, so he had to start over.


‘If I make notches in the coil, and then use the gear to make the sound… and the screw to wind it up, that would probably be an improvement compared to my previous attempt.’ He thought, gaining a little sparkle in his eye.

Unaware he stuck out his tongue, Bailin started fiddling with the parts again, attaching the screw to the coil and adding the gear so it would produce sound when it struck the right parts of the coil. Carrying out his newly thought up plan, Bailin continued to fine tune the parts as to improve the process of making sound, without interruption, unless one did not wind up enough or again.


After a while he finally sighed in relief, little beads of sweat dripping down from his forehead. “Well, I never expected this to be so intense, especially compared to the first try, but it will probably be worth it.” He sighed as he wiped some of the sweat of his forehead with the back of his hand and shaking his hand to remove some of the bigger drops.

Placing the wind-up mechanism on his workbench Bailin started rummaging through his garage again. ‘I think I should ask Oddy to make some metal shelves or something to store everything of the same thing together, then again, at least it looks as serious things happen here on a daily basis.’ He grinned going through another pile of bits and bobs of mechanical ingredients, or so to speak. Bailin kept looking through the piles that had magically gathered around his workbench until he found a nice looking box and two proper looking screws. ‘Alright, let’s make this an epic music box, the most epic one I can make with my grand levels, all three of them, of mechanical things.'  


Placing the newly gathered parts on the workbench, Bailin took the wind-up mechanism in his hands and held it little bit above the box. “Yep, this looks fine, though these bits do look a tad dirty; maybe, just maybe I shouldn’t let my house get this dirty… or at least the floor. However it might also be wiser not to leave these parts lying about to gather dust until they are needed. Just a thought for the future though.” He mumbled to himself, taking off his coat so he could use his not yet dreadfully smeared shirt as a cleaning rag. Placing the wind-up mechanism back on the bench he took the little box in his one hand and a piece of his shirt in the other. He then proceeded to wipe the dust and smudges of grease of the little box.

Having cleaned the greasy, dirty parts he intended to use for the music box Bailin put them gently on his workbench. Staring at the little box he started measuring which way would be best to fit in the newly created wind-up mechanism, as well as a way to attach it to the box. Thinking back on how he had constructed the previous music box, Bailin thought to himself: ‘Well, it worked out, and even though this is a slightly different mechanism, it’s not that different, thus it should not be any problem to attach it all in the same ways as I did before. I hope… and if it doesn’t work, ah well, what’s the worst that could happen? I’d just have to start over again.’


Taking the box into his left hand, the open side facing him, Bailin took up the wind-up mechanism and gently placed it in the box with his right hand. He then took the wind-up part of the mechanism and gently attached it to the box, so one could turn it and generate enough power to make it turn for a while. Next he took one of the screws and used it to pin the wind-up mechanism to the box, making sure it wasn’t able to shoot away, get loose quickly or any unwanted action.

Lastly he took the last screw he had dug up from his pile of parts, attaching it opposite of its little brother, gently fastening the wind-up mechanism in the box.

After having finished the interior of the box, Bailin started to inspect it for flaws, gently picking it up, as to avoid damaging the delicate mechanism. Turning the little box gently from side to side Bailin gave it a thorough look, eyeing every possible smudge, dent, bend or anything that might be out of the supposedly ordinary. Having checked the exterior and after having it found not wanting, Bailin proceeded to inspect the interior, although he did not expect to find the interior wanting, for he had watched with great care as not to damage the delicate mechanism. This was because the now finished music box was intended to be given to Blue as a form of payment for her helping him get his hands on chalk crayons.


“All right, this should suffice, the tune should be as Blue had requested, maybe a test run should be most prudent, it would be a shame if all this hard work had been for nought. That would be a waste of proper resources, time and most likely get Blue disappointed. And we can’t have that, now can we?” he mumbled to himself as he gently wound up the mechanism, silently hoping nothing would break. When Bailin let the mechanism go, the box gently and softly started playing the tune Blue had requested.
