[EDIT: Feel free to post stories of your own experiences, whether it be things that made you feel, things that made you laugh, moments in the forum that you found enjoyable, a heart-felt thank you, or even how you stumbled upon this forum.]
(I know I said I'd be gone for awhile, but I'm just stopping by to post this little thing I wrote real quick. Also, recommended mood music: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsTjI75uEUQ)
Once upon a time, there lived a young man. A young man who was all alone in the big, scary world, and would often stay by himself inside the safety of his home. His only friend was the marvel of technology. A computer, to be exact. This computer was what kept him connected to the outside world, for the world outside was scary enough to make sense of.
Using this computer, he could view the wonders of the outside world while staying at his desk, with the freedom to go anywhere he wanted at the click of a mouse (no, not an actual mouse, a computer mouse. Remember what we mentioned earlier, technology? Yes, that’s what we named our little pointy-clicky devices. Not the actual rodent, mind you). As he explored the global phenomenon known as the World Wide Web, he came across a peculiar kind of site. It was what was known as a forum, but instead of writing little posts to talk about various subjects and matters, this was a forum where people would write stories together (or “roleplay”).
This site in particular was about a show that he was very fond of, the rules simple and easy to understand, the character application process not too painful and worth the effort. But the thing that he found the most intriguing was the small window at the bottom of the screen. A chatbox that acted like a forum, but was made for somewhat instantaneous conversation amongst other members of the site. It was here where he ended up finding a place that he could call his own. A home away from home (but yet still accessible from the relaxing confines of one’s home).
This community was a somewhat small, yet a largely varied group of people to interact with. Multiple personalities could be seen, different types of reactions could be witnessed, and many interesting quarrels would happen from time to time. New members would come and go, only a handful of the tide of newbies actually staying behind to become ‘veterans’ of the boards. With each passing day, it seemed a couple more joined in on the ‘chatbox fun’. Many of them would often talk of all the things they were planning to do (even though nobody else really cared), rattling off all their ‘original’ ideas that other players before them had already thought of, then find out it was actually quite difficult to achieve these things, and quit after one or two weeks.
The young man soon found himself to be one of the veteran players, attempting to help the newer players whenever he could. In his time of roleplaying, he began to find himself inside a close circle of friends, companions he could talk to freely without feeling judged or criticized on all fronts. The chatbox had become a place where he was well known, yet he often kept to himself to give the newer members space, time to get their feet wet and find friends of their own to go on journeys with. Suddenly, he found himself in a guild. Not only was it the largest guild on the board, but the leader also believed that the young man exuded qualities fit for a second-in-command position (despite not really doing anything to recruit new members or training current ones). People would turn to him for help. His name began to spread, despite his best efforts of not drawing attention to himself (because honestly, no one likes a braggart).
Then suddenly, life happened. The young man found himself without a connection to the place he could call a home. For weeks, he felt anguished, wishing with all his heart that he could get on there one last time to let his threading companions know about his circumstances and why he couldn’t join them. The months of summer passed by, his memories of the good times held on that site slowly fading away as the relentless flow of time continued to trickle by.
Thankfully, life was not so cruel to keep him completely away from the things he loved. A position as a graduate assistant was offered to him at the college he was planning to go to, giving him access to the board that he had spent many a countless hours on, talking about whatever, whenever he wanted. The amount of greetings and good tidings he received from all his friends that he had felt he so heartlessly abandoned overwhelmed him. It was all the young man could do to keep himself from crying right there in the computer lab, surprised, yet glad, that no one harbored any ill feelings towards him and his sudden absence.
And now we’re at the current time of this young man’s life. Things returned to the way they once were, the way that the young man had missed for quite some time. More and more friends were made. Some of them left, but yet promised that they would be back eventually (and most of them have come back). Love found its way into the board, the first ever wedding held on the site (a momentous occasion). Bros were found, and alliances were made. The site continued to grow and grow, with more and more unique individuals joining the ranks every day.
And the young man was simply happy to be a part of it all.
Thanks for making every day an interesting one, guys.
(And before anyone asks: No, I'm not leaving for good. I just felt like this needed to be said because I'm sappy like that.)
