A sleeping woman stirred as she began to wake. Her increasingly deep breaths carried the smell of a city garden, that of green and earth tamed by concrete and smoke. The natural force that kept her head from floating to the clouds did not seem to be working properly as she became more aware of the pressure building inside her head, and eventually noticed an odd strain on her lower backside. It took a few more moments for Isabella Rose to realize that she was hanging upside-down from her waist while most of the rest of her body rested on a smooth and flat surface, and the remaining parts of her simply hovered in midair. It creaked when she moved; intuitively, she knew that she was lying on an old wooden table. She opened her eyes and found herself in a gloomy room, lit from the direction opposite of where she—

Eeenk! The thought, abstract as it was, was flushed away as an attempt to sit up triggered an ominous creak. Isabella’s breath caught, and there was no time at all for her to react before the whole thing broke, collapsing under her weight and sending up a dust cloud that rained splinters onto everything. A shadow could be seen struggling in the cloud, which now emitted barking coughs at regular intervals.

Once the air had cleared and Isabella had extracted herself from the wreckage, she strode over to the paneless window (that clearly ought to have had some) and stared. Where was she?

It had been over five years since Isabella had last played Elder Tale, and she had finally just finished designing her new avatar, named after the woman, Adler. Isabelle was settled in a mismatched dining set pushed up against the wall the apartment shared with the family in the unit two numbers down, her work laptop and accompanying peripherals spread out in front of her. The memories came one after the other, interrupting each other as if jockeying for her attention. They say that you can never remember how you got to wherever you found yourself in a dream, but she was certain she was awake. She had flown in from the States a week earlier and visited her parents in Leeds before taking the train south to surprise her best friend. Isabella stared up at the sky, but she wasn’t looking at clouds. If this isn’t a dream, then why can I see my health and mana bars?

For there they were. Isabella had somehow ignored them before now, but now that the other spots of light had completely cleared from her vision, the two brightly colored polygons were all she could care about. ”But how?” Her gaze unfocused again as she speculated silently.

Is this the game? It* does look the same.

How?

Why?

How? I was sitting right in front of my laptop—

Woke up here—

At this, Isabella pressed her palm flat against the lower curve of her back.

Hurt. This is real—

Then how?

This was pointless—she couldn’t debate herself out of the situation. Lacking buttons to click or a screen to tap, Isabella raised her hand and, when the tips of her longest fingers were about chin-high, she stared.

They were tan, and they weren’t her fingers. For the first time since she woke, Isabella looked at herself. She was in mute shock as she connected her appearance to that of Adler’s. A shiver ran up her spine, and Isabella snapped out of it. Focus. She repeated her earlier movement and, after a deliberate pause, pressed against an imaginary surface of air. Nearly a dozen options appeared, sliding out from the spot she had touched. Trembling, she checked her inventory, applied her equipment, then finally, closed the menu and set off.

London, the capital of the United Kingdom, was not completely overrun with the concrete monoliths typically equated with business districts. Even the most famous of landmarks, however, seemed to be as equally carpeted with moss and a thick weave of creeping vines. The halls Isadler (as she was neither fully one nor the other) passed through to get out of the building she was in had the same eco-coating; tendrils big and small grew from cracks in the walls, and patches of moss on the ground made Isadler slip more than once. She was silent, alert for any signs of other people nearby—but wait, wasn’t she a Fortuneteller? Adler’s fingers (she decided they looked nothing like her real ones) still shook slightly as she brought up the menu again. There were only three skills available to her at the moment, and she was fortunate enough to have been right about one of them.

Prediction. Isadler looked around, wondering what the skill’s effect was supposed to look like, but a short pulse of sound played in her head—she had a feeling that only she could hear it, even if she were cheek to cheek in a crowd full of people. Nobody here. She said gloomily, before pressing on. The skill had a relatively short cool down time, and Isadler was careful to use the skill as soon as the timer was up, which took a few minutes.

She realized this particular building was more derelict than others when she finally stepped out through a giant hole in the wall (only after waiting a bit longer for the Prediction skill to be available again, of course). Though the buildings closest to her were practically plants themselves, a government building not too far away actually showed a bit of paint. As she came closer however, she distinctly heard a shrill, female scream.

Isabella froze, listening hard for more clues as to what was happening. Whoever it was screamed again, and it was only the constant presence of Elder Tale’s basic graphical interface that kept Isadler from completely losing her nerve. ’It’s just a game.’ She told herself firmly. Adler took a deep breath, squared her shoulders, and strode purposefully towards the source.

Along the way, Adler kept vigilant. There was little doubt in her mind that she was, indeed, in London (or the Elder Tale version of it anyway), but she had been away from the game for so long that she didn’t know if the main cities were still safe zones. Prediction. Her skill wasn’t picking anything up, but she soon realized that it was easy to tell the difference between the People of the Land and her fellow players. Aside from having questionable aesthetics, those who were real people seemed to be having the same reaction Isabelle was. Be it confusion, shock, denial, or fear, Isabella was willing to bet that every single person who looked like they found out they had cancer or became the living embodiment of their six year old cousin’s drawings was like her—a plastic wind-up fish in a salt-water aquarium.

Prediction. Once more, the high-pitched wail made the hairs at the back of Adler’s neck stand on end. Feeling a sudden rush of adrenaline, she broke into a run. When she turned a corner and entered an empty alley, she should have realized what was happening.

But she didn’t. Clearly.

Though the screams didn’t come again, Adler ran down the path. The walls of the buildings on either side of her couldn’t have been more than five meters apart. By the time she heard the first catcall, there would have been no way for her to escape them under normal circumstances.

Several people suddenly appeared around her. Though they were dressed well and looked clean, there was something about their faces that didn’t look right, and it terrified her. She realized, much later, that it was because their malicious faces were incongruous with the rest of their appearance. ”Give us your stuff.” The nearest man ordered, though calling him that was generous. His face and his voice couldn’t have belonged to a boy older than fifteen.

”Where is she?” Adler asked. Surprise flickered on the boy’s features; he wasn’t expecting this reaction.

”Who do you mean?”

“Someone—” The girl just behind and to the boy’s right suddenly screamed. They both sniggered.

“You found her. Now, give us your stuff, or we’ll hurt you.”

“You wouldn’t. It’s a safe zone.”

“Not anymore.” Isabella’s stomach fell. She was bluffing, but they called her on it. She had no idea if they were telling the truth or not, but she didn’t want to just give away her stuff either.

“You’ll have to fight me for it.” She declared more bravely than she felt. How was she even supposed to fight? Press the hotkey button with her finger?

Adler never had a chance to decide. “Fatal Ambush!” She heard from behind her. Adler spun around just in time to see the tip of the blade before it was buried deep in her side by a Werecat assassin whose face she never saw. At that point, several things happened in rapid succession. A bright blue light from above caused surprised gasps from all around, then there was the dull rasping sound of something solid hitting the pavement, and more screams. Members of the Royal Guard had taken care of the oppressor in a flash and were hanging around to make sure that nothing else would happen. Adler wasn’t a threat; since she was stabbed, she was still trying to process her injury.

Adler had a vague awareness of events as they transpired, but as this was the first time she had ever been stabbed in her life, she was wondering why it didn’t hurt more. What was troubling was that it didn’t hurt at all. Her hands were pressed against her stomach, putting pressure on the skin around the cut, and Adler’s mind wandered to her surroundings. To her surprise, her health bar was full. ‘It must have been an in-game mechanic.’ Pressure on her upper back and forearm startled the Guardian to her senses, but the grim face that looked back at her looked like it belonged to a kind person.

“Let’s get out of here. Move.” Adler let herself be led away. The two brushed shoulders with the rest of the hoodlums as they hurried out of the alley, but nothing else happened.

“Are you stupid or something? Why on earth would you just walk into an abandoned alley? My six year old has more sense than you!” Adler’s eyebrows lifted in surprise. The man scolding her had the body of a teenager. Looking closely at his face however, she saw the fine lines brought by age or illness, and at once she understood that the player must have been older than his avatar.

“You don’t believe me?”

“No—that is to say, of course I do—” She stammered. “I just—we’re in the game, aren’t we? And I heard…” The man’s face tightened, looking grimmer than before. Of course he would; didn’t he just say that he had a young child? What did this mean?

“Just be careful.” He said gruffly, giving her a brief nod before turning around and leaving. Adler moved to follow him, but halted mid-step. “You too.” She said sadly, though she didn’t know if he heard it. She watched his retreating back until he disappeared around the corner before squaring her shoulders and turning to walk the other way.

The bright side to this encounter was that Adler finally had confirmation that the city was a designated safe zone. That didn’t mean that it wasn’t a good idea to be careful nonetheless. Adler kept her face blank as she walked. She didn’t encounter any more trouble in the city, though the distressed looks of the people she passed by made her as uneasy as she would have felt if a bunch of thugs had come along. Thrice Adler took a different street because it felt like a riot was about to break out, which seemed pointless because there wasn’t anybody to riot against. If the game masters were in here with them, they weren’t making their presence known.

‘I need to get out of here.’
