The shouts and laughs of adventurers mix with hard steel steps and clangs of armor in motion.
Just another day in London town…
Azuka moves seamlessly through the crowd, cloaked and unnoticed like a shade in the shadows. Head down, she walks with a graceful poise and a light step making as little noise as possible. In front her, the target trots carelessly.
“This is going to be easy.”
Judging by his gear, Azuka knows he is a low-level like her. If it comes down to a fight, she isn’t sure if she would win, but then that’s why she’s an assassin.
Hit fast, hit hard, leave some poison in them, watch and wait.
Azuka doesn't know the adventurer’s history. She doesn't need it. All she needs to know is that someone is willing to pay for this guy to be waylaid. Whomever he made the unfortunate mistake of angering is his problem. To Azuka this is work, and besides he’s an adventurer, even if he’s killed it’s not permanent, just a momentary darkness before waking up in the Cathedral. That’s what makes this okay, it’s just a game, though whether it plays out as a fantasy or survival-horror tonight is Azuka’s call.
It was a couple of days ago Azuka got the job. She has various contacts in the game’s “underworld”, mostly unsavory types trying to make a quick buck. The job was simple enough, take out the target before he reaches the destination. It also fit within Azuka’s parameters; no landers unless heinous criminal. If you’re in the business of killing, you need to have some kind of code. It’s good for morale and keeps your head where it should be. There’s no honor in being a monster. Azuka understood the irony of her sentiments all too well as she looked for a crevice she could duck into, and quickly apply poison to her blades.
There is always a question of how and where with assassination. That’s where the homework comes in. It’s not as if she could kill someone in town. That would a suicide. You had to wait until the mark is outside the gates, and you had to make sure they didn't see you coming. There’s a proper way to do things, and if you want to work in this line of business, you have to be able to keep a reputation.
The mark makes it outside the gates, but he has a walk before he actually gets to his destination. There’s not a lot of coverage to keep someone hidden, so Azuka uses Hiding Entry. The skill has a ten-minute timer, and knowing this, Azuka begins timing herself while waiting for an opening.
Five minutes later, it’s just Azuka and the mark on the road. It’s late, digital stars blanket the sky, and time is running out. Azuka could go straight in now, but with a quick spin, he could draw and put up a fight. It’s not that she doesn't think she would win in a duel, it’s just easier if she doesn't have to try.
Azuka looks down, and seeing a pebble picks it up and throws at the mark’s leg. The pebble rings off his armored greaves. Hoping he looks down, Azuka activates Fatal Ambush. The mark stops abruptly, checks his leg for dents or the object that hit him. He sees nothing, but he was too thorough. He took too long, and he didn't think to turn around. The five second cast time is up, and Azuka is flying at him. Fatal Ambush hits the mark directly in the back. He doesn't know what hit him. Pressing the attack, Azuka sweeps his legs from under him. As he falls, she gives a few slashes for good measure. He hits the floor, and Azuka hops back a few feet.
Looking up, the mark sees Azuka; white skull mask shining in the moonlight, black cloak fluttering gently. This is her favorite part, the fear. It’s like watching a scare video in real time. His eyes are wide and he’s trying to drag himself backwards as the poison eats at his health bar.
“No! Get away! I didn't do anything!”
She doesn't say anything. It’s more fun that way. Like Jason hunting teenagers. All in good fun. She can’t hold it in though. She starts laughing. It’s hilarious to see him like this. It’s not like he’s really going to die. She walks slowly towards him, he’s brandishing his sword but his swings are wild, frantic. He tries to pick himself up, but in an instant, Azuka’s daggers are in him. Face to face, she watches his body dematerialize, then vanish.
All in a day’s work. Azuka dusts herself off. It’s a bit of a walk back to town.
