Stark white clouds loomed over a stark white ground. Humming peacefully, Icarus trudged across the snow fields of Snowdonia. Only a gentle breeze disturbed the afternoon air. Everything was calm and still. No matter how he looked at it, the flat landscape was maddeningly monotonous. Even so, he was quite at home. In his colorless starter robes with his colorless hair, he blended in with his surroundings. Here, he was just another part of the scenery.
This was one of the few locations he bothered to visit regularly. He liked the biting cold that lingered year round. It cut him to the bone, helping him focus and keeping him alert. It also had the additional bonus of driving off unprepared adventurers. As long as he avoided the major spawn points and roads, he could go days without encountering another soul. That was precious for the introvert, who often needed somewhere to recharge alone.
A familiar grove of trees drew into view. Icarus halted in front of them to admire the icicles hanging for their thin branches. They were artificially perfect. A chill ran up his spine. Getting hit by one would do some serious damage. Their shape came to a sharp point. They were thick enough that he could see his reflection in them. Speaking of which…
The heretic frowned slightly. Someone else was in his reflection. A frosty dire wolf stalked towards him from behind. Its body language clearly conveyed that it was hunting him. His heart sank. ”Don’t,” he breathed softly, a thin mist forming as moisture left his lips. Quietly, he prayed it would leave.
He was not afraid of the monster. It undoubtedly outleveled him, but he had survived worse. Since the Apocalypse, he had developed a talent for running away. Besides, the worst it could possibly do was kill him. He was simply disappointed. Unlike many of his peers trapped in this world, he had no interest whatsoever in earning experience or collecting crafting materials. Thus, he had no reason to fight. Destroying some poor game designer’s work without one felt like vandalism.
Unsurprisingly, his prayer went unanswered. Now that he was stationary, the canine abandoned stealth. Flexing its powerful muscles, it snarled and lunged for him. Icarus sighed heavily. He half considered letting it slaughter him, but not even he was that lazy. He had to at least attempt to save himself.
At the last moment, he drew on his magic. Chains burst from the earth in a burst of purple light. His Shackles of the Sentenced twisted themselves around the wolf, holding it in place. Icarus gave it a quick, playful curtsey. Then, without an ounce of shame, he turned on his heel and bolted. Plan A: Run Away was in full effect.
While he fled, he counted to thirty in his head. Once his spell duration was surely up, he glanced over his shoulder. Monsters usually lost aggro if he escaped fast enough. That was not the case. Instead, his now freed enemy bounded towards him with redoubled vigor, howling with indignation.
Oops. Well. This called for Plan B: Hide ASAP. Icarus picked up his pace nervously. He needed another thirty seconds. He scanned the area for any kind of useful terrain. Unfortunately, all of the nearby foliage was far too flimsy to support his weight. Aside from that, the icy plains were barren. Great.
There was no Plan C. The wolf caught up to him. He had no choice but to pause to cast his root again. He stopped it with inches to spare. Frustrated, it jerked forward, trying to close its jaws on his arm. Acting on pure instinct, Icarus gripped his smooth wooden staff like a baseball bat and swung with all of his might. He connected with a satisfying crack.
The improvised attack was unexpectedly effective. It temporarily stunned them both. When he recovered, Icarus beamed at his opponent. This could work! He sprinted away once more, waiting for his cool down to tick. Then he settled into a pattern of actions.
Run. Snare. Hit. Repeat. Little by little, the novice chipped away the wolf’s HP. His roommate Quinn once told him that hard crowd control was one of the most useful abilities in MMORPGs. Suddenly, he was very grateful for that tip. The mob was not intelligent enough to break the loop. He could keep this up until one of them ran out of stamina.
By the third rotation, Icarus was having fun with it. Maybe, just maybe, he didn’t hate this after all.

The little magician found herself walking about the Snowdonia area very often. It was just a short walk from Stratford in the Avon Valley, but it was a place where few people actually visited during this season. The area was very much decorated back when Christmas passed by, as she vividly remembered the large amount of decorations along the trail. It was festive to a point where it would've been a violation to the beauty of nature with all those artificial wreaths and mistletoe being hung around. Nevertheless, the end of the Christmas event took away the novelty of the area, returning Snowdonia to a simple and peaceful place where winter was still in full session. She had always liked the season and especially the snow. But perhaps what had made this place feel all the more special to her was that this trail reminded her of an area that had been close to her hometown. In the original world, Midori had lived in a small town a little north of Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare's birthplace. She had been quite surprised when the simple village had turned into a military metropolis in this iteration. Yet, this snow mountain had also felt very familiar to her as well.
Midori had been walking along the trail since the early morning as well, sticking primarily to the paths. It was a peaceful place, but there were still monsters. As long as one stayed off the secluded areas, it was still quite easy for even a Level 1 to make their way to the hall where the winter party had been. She hadn't actually checked to see what other monsters might have been lurking in wait. Snowdonia did tend to have its fair share of weak and strong monsters. Her little skirmish where she teamed up with that red-eyed assassin was through fighting snowmen, and those very snowmen had enormous level gaps between them. Regardless, despite being on a main trail, she had heard some commotion. Her ears caught the sound of a wolf's snarling - was it hunting something? Her suspicions were confirmed when a person emerged from a grove, his body looking as though it was draped from the very snow itself. Between the clothing and the white hair, it was hard to tell whether this person was actually a person at all. Japanese folktale spoke of a supernatural creature called the Yuki-Onna, a woman who died lost in the snow and became a wandering ghost. Nevertheless, it wasn't hard for her to examine the defender a little more carefully. She saw the telltale signs of an Adventurer's interface pop up with inspection, but he was a little too far away for her to read whatever was listed on that menu.
The girl continued to watch as she prepared herself to intervene. Her weapon was prepared, a spherical crystal that glowed with a deep green aura. In her other hand held a control bar and as she gripped it, a small 3-foot puppet was summoned forth and gripped itself to her like a child in piggyback. She saw how the monster was advancing toward the person, only to be stopped by violet chains emerging from the ground. Her interest was piqued. This was another Heretic. From what she knew of other people with the Heretic, however, they tended to be very messed-up people stereotypically. She was a little messed-up herself, choosing to switch to the class for the sake of science. Either way, there was a lot one can say about a person by the way they fought. The stranger fought in a rather unconventional and yet ingenious sort of way. Shackles of the Sentenced would bind the wolf, the stranger would smack it with his staff, and then he would run away to wait for the cooldown to reset. Midori was getting close enough to a point where her Tongue of Nature skill was starting to activate, allowing her to understand the wolf's growling.
"Cowardly man! Come and face me like a warrior! I'll tear you up!"
She wasn't really sure what to do. For one thing, it was common courtesy to help someone in distress, but she felt that this particular strategy was rather sound. Midori wasn't sure whether her interruption would come with praise or stinging criticism, considering the thin line between helping someone and kill stealing. Instead, she pointed the floating orb forward. Its glowing jade color became enveloped in an evil light as it shot forward a thin black haze toward the wolf's hind limbs. She had casted Pain Affliction, a support skill that attempted to slow down the monster by weakening its movement speed. The wolf howled in pain and anger as the chain effect wore off. The wolf was now free, but it was dragging one of its limbs along, making it move just a bit more slowly.
"Now you bring reinforcements! Is Man really this weak?"
It seemed that her understanding of monsters' speech patterns had improved as her class level increased. Now she could understand the wolf and realize that it was a prideful creature. Regardless, monsters of pride tended to learn their place when they realized the danger of their own situation. Nevertheless, even if the other man was using a smart strategy, the wolf was still at an advantage. It probably would have taken a number of repeated camping cycles before the wolf would back off. Midori walked off the main road and stepped through the snowy grass beside the retreated Adventurer. "Hello there. Do you need any help, either killing or making the wolf calm down?" she asked the other Heretic in advance. If given the affirmative, she would then prepare to attack using a number of new spells in her own arsenal. Otherwise if the man was perfectly fine on his own, this would have been enough help she would give to him.

Two repetitions passed, then ten, then twenty. Icarus could not help but be impressed by the wolf’s resolve to dismember him. Had he been in its place, he would have given up after the first snare. They sprinted back and forth over and over again as if locked in some kind of futile dance. The staff did not deal much damage per strike. It would take forever for one of them to break.
The white mage settled into a strict rhythm, concentrating on keeping his clever pattern in tact. He did not notice any changes in his surroundings until some sort of black haze enveloped his partner’s leg, soliciting another angry howl. Huh? He blinked, momentarily confused. By the looks of the particle effects, the debuff probably came from his class’s spell list. He had never learned anything resembling it. That could only mean that someone else was here.
He pried his eyes away from the monster, finally spotting her. A magician with a pale complexion stood at a slight distance, watching him ‘fight’. ”Oh…” he breathed. Of course all of that snarling would attract attention. In a pleasant tone, he called out a bright ”Hello!” like nothing out of the ordinary was happening. ”Sorry for the commotion.” Cheerfulness was his default defence when he encountered strangers. Even when he was in danger, he would always be polite.
When she offered to take care of the wolf for him, he beamed at her. Almost automatically, he replied, ”I have no intentions of actually killing it. If you would like to do something, please go right ahead.” He had no shame. Why not let the younger girl rescue him? After all, she seemed very competent wielding that ominous floating crystal of hers. And was that a puppet clinging to her back? He wanted her to do more just to see her in combat.
Combat. Oops. In the ten seconds or so it had taken Icarus to process the newcomer’s arrival, he had forgotten he was in the middle of running for his life. Due to that brief delay, he had failed to put enough distance between himself and his wolf. He had no time to summon Shackles of the Sentenced. It was already on him.
Instinct kicked in. Moving without thinking, he blocked its incoming attack with his staff. He immediately regretted the impulse. The beast fastened its teeth around it and easily tugged it out of his grip. Not good. It would have been more tactically sound to get hit. Cursing his human sense of self preservation, he took a step back. Well. If he died for this, at least it would be fitting. He had only erred because he had tried to cheat by enlisting help.
Temporarily forgetting about his surprise ally, he recalculated his options. He could still win. Maybe. Instead of retreating any further away from his opponent, he deliberately approached it. In its frustration, it could not resist the temptation for payback. Letting go of his staff, it sank its teeth deep into his arm.
As pain radiated through Icarus’s limb, he was suddenly very very conscious of the other heretic’s presence. As he recoiled from the blow, he did not cry out in distress like a normal person would. He could not even bring himself to fake it.
The damage sent tremors of excitement burning through his system. It fascinated him. His addiction to the sensation had only grown more intense since the Apocalypse, so much so that he had been unable to continue as a normal cleric party member. There was something incredibly honest and personal about it. Other people were not supposed to see him like this.
Shakily, he ducked down and retrieved his staff. He restored order to the situation by ensnaring the wolf in those brilliant purple chains. He took one last moment to recover his composure. Then, he patted the restrained canine affectionately. ”It’s been fun, but now we’ve both made mistakes. I think it’s best we part ways.”
Without looking up (he could not face her quite yet), he began walking towards his fellow adventurer. ”Yes. I would appreciate some assistance, thank you.” TAGS:Midori HP:72% WORDCOUNT:692

A really peculiar person indeed. The white-haired man, midway through combat and facing a bloodthirsty beast that was ready to pounce again at him any second now, simply greeted her as though nothing was the matter. She felt as though everyone she would meet in Elder Tale usually turned out to have some sort of odd quirk to themselves, but this man's mannerism and fighting strategy really took the cake as of late. Not in a bad way, of course. On the contrary, she felt as though he was a very interesting person she'd like to get to know. Of course, when he wasn't currently facing danger in the form of a canine predator. This was the first dire wolf she'd ever seen, in fact. Did they really live all the way over here in Snowdonia? The man acknowledged her concern to help and accepted the gesture without any hesitation. She supposed that at the rate he was fighting the monster, it was very unlikely that there would have been a conclusion anytime soon.
In the midst of that conversation, however, the man had forgotten to recast the restriction spell and run away for cover like he usually did, causing the wolf to break free and beeline straight for him. "Your overconfidence shows a weakness!" the wolf howled as it tackled the other Heretic. The man parried away the first charge with a swing of his staff, but the second contact left the monster's fangs gouging into his sleeve. The man stumbled backward, his HP rapidly dropping about a fourth of its maximum level. It was quite apparent that the level difference between the two was quite high and the main reason why only the wolf had suffered damage was because of the crafty magician's tricks. Nevertheless, he silently regained composure by drawing up another set of chains to restrain the creature. "Our fight isn't over yet! Get back here!" the wolf barked in anger.
The snow cloaked man was now walking toward her in a scene that most resembled a fighter tagging out to bring in their partner. His eyes averted her gaze, but she figured that since he had started the fight, she probably shouldn't kill the beast. Midori locked her glance long enough for the system interface to appear within her vision. Her eyes navigated the menu and triggered a party invite for the man. In any case, if she should happen to have killed it in the end, he would at least receive his fair share of experience from the encounter. The man walked past and at that moment, Midori shifted position into a more proper battle pose. She gripped her control bar in the right hand and held it beside her waist, causing the puppet to disembark and stand ready by her side. Her left arm was stretched out forward in a pointing gesture. In response, the large crystal ball floated gently over her hand, awaiting her further directions.
"I should ask you to withdraw now."
The wolf struggled against the violet chains, their strength rapidly disappearing. "Let me say the same thing to you, girlie! Do not think you can face up against a wolf, because... here... I..." the chains cracked and immediately were smashed to pieces by the monster's forward charge. "Come!" Roaring to the heavens, the wolf dashed at an amazing speed for its small frame. At the moment it leaped to attack, the young magician lifted her control bar and beckoned the small puppet to intercept the blow. The wooden figure jumped up and performed an uppercut onto the beast's underside, causing its body to fly upward and off target from its intended attack. The monster's HP bar diminished a small amount from that attack. "Man and your tools! If you had enough courage to fight using your own strength and your own puny clawless body, you wouldn't be anywhere as cocky!" Hearing this, the girl retracted her control bar and returned the puppet to its prior piggybacking position. She raised her hand to move the floating orb a little higher up into the air so that it would not get in the way.
"Well, if that's what you prefer."
The schoolgirl held her hands out in another combat pose, imitating the martial arts stances that she had watched her guild co-leader friend Hirosame use. In actuality, she was only but a magician and definitely not a Monk like him. Yet, her level was massively higher than the creature she was currently facing. She could afford to entertain a strong-willed beast's demands for at least a little bit. A strange purple mist was looming in the atmosphere. The wolf made one more circling movement and resumed its prowling motions. The monster then pounced, its claw outstretched toward her abdomen and ready to strike. Midori's calm face let out a smirk at that moment. "Puny clawless body, you say?" Her arm, pointed forward with the palm face-up, underwent a visual transformation at that moment. The pale skin of her hand was engulfed with a violet flame at that moment as she stretched her fingers outward. The flame finalized into the form of a shadowy claw as she jumped upward to evade the monster's attack. "Oblivion Claw, Corrupting Curse!" Its eyes could only look skyward as the descending girl pointed the claw down, this time to grab onto its back and drag it to the ground.
If she had been a Monk like Hiro was, the animal likely would have caused a crater upon impact with no chance of survival. However, she had not selected the passive skill that would have increased her physical hand-to-hand abilities, making the strike damage very low in comparison. The most notable form of damage came from the claw itself, dealing darkness-based damage to the beast. Its body was pushed to the ground and its HP was dropping into the red zone as she continued to hold the strange phenomenon right up against its body. Then, she got up and walked away, cancelling the spell with a wave of her arm. "I'm sure you know when to admit defeat. Apologize to my associate here and I suppose you can go your way." Letting out a growl, it turned its face toward the white-haired man and bowed its head down in acknowledgement. After a few seconds, the creature disengaged aggro and scampered away into the distance. "Makes me almost want to pick Animal Trainer for my subclass." she whispered to herself before returning her eyes toward the other Heretic. "I'm sorry if I had interrupted any training you might have been doing. That's quite a wily strategy you had there. My name is Midori. May I inquire your own name?" As she finally got close enough to the shrouded man, the raven-haired girl made a bow.

As Icarus made his retreat, a notification popped up on his on his interface. He blinked in mild surprise. A party invite? He had not seen one of those since he abandoned his cleric class. Strangers were much less likely to invite him to join them as their token support now that his spells could be double edged. Forgetting his unease, he glanced over towards the magician.
It was a rather thoughtful gesture. This was probably a precaution to avoid kill stealing him. However, it was completely unnecessary. If she took all of the credit for defeating the wolf, it would suit him just fine. If he gained any experience, he would run the risk of accidentally leveling. Dealing with that would be a pain. Oh well. Explaining why would take far too long. Besides, rejecting someone’s kindness would be too rude, even for him. He flashed her another signature smile and cheerfully accepted.
Then Icarus excused himself from combat, allowing her to take over completely. At that point, it occurred to him that trusting a perfect stranger with his safety was reckless. She did not seem insincere, but one could never really be sure when it came to heretics. The uncertainty only made him more excited to watch her. She shifted easily into a battle pose. In response, with an impressive display of strength, his canine stalker pulled itself free of its bindings. Roaring a challenge, it rushed her. The girl did not seem concerned. Good. If he had thought this encounter would actually be dangerous for her, he would not have so carelessly asked her to get involved.
She raised that odd looking bar in her hand. Apparently her wooden ‘backpack’ was indeed a puppet. It sprung to life and stopped their opponent mid-lunge with an uppercut. Hah. That single, defensive strike did as much damage as all of Icarus’s auto attacks combined. Amused, he leaned on his now-happily-retired staff. The drama only got better and better. For the second time since the took over, she taunted the wolf out loud. To make things even stranger, she followed up by disarming herself. Was she… conversing with it? Tilting his head curiously, he paid more attention.
After a brief period of confusion, the novice realized that she must be using the Tongue of Nature skill. Due to his limited interaction with other adventurers, he had never seen it in person before. He could not help but envy her. There was smack talk going on and he could only hear half of it! So unfair. He had never considered picking up that ability before, but it looked like it was fun. He would just have to use his imagination as a substitute.
”If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine!” he hummed quietly to himself in a voice he felt matched the wolf’s appearance as it circled her ominously. He barely suppressed a laugh. Okay, bad idea. This was serious. If he made a habit of quoting things while he fought, he would probably end up dying a lot more than he already did.
Just as the tension was reaching its peak, the other adventurer smirked. An intimidating set of shadowy talons enveloped her hand as she leapt into the air. He did not know this ability, either. Fortunately, she named it for him. With an incredible amount of physical force for something cast by a mage, her fierce Oblivion Claw slammed the poor animal painfully into the ground. Its HP dropped rapidly into the red. It was no match for her at all.
Declaring her victory, she ordered it to apologize to him. What a nice final touch. She certainly had style. Icarus beamed at the wolf as it obediently acknowledged him. It retreated with its tail between its legs. He was glad it had managed to survive. There was a small chance it would remember him if they ever crossed paths again. That was a rare relationship to have with a monster of this world.
When his hero addressed him again, Icarus straightened his posture. She complimented him and apologized, despite having just done him a huge favor. ”Not at all~” Having had a chance to recover from the rush of being hit, he was back to normal. As such, he could not allow her to be so humble. ”You can’t interrupt something that’s not happening. I was simply trying to survive,” he insisted honestly. ”I owe you my gratitude. It would have taken me forever to drive him off by myself. Strategy or no, if I had slipped or erred even once, I would have been in trouble.”
He appreciated that she actually introduced herself properly. Many of the other players he had crossed lately had skipped that common courtesy. Maybe expecting people to ask for information they could read off of their displays was a bit unreasonable. ”Thank you, Ms Midori.” He committed her name to memory. ”My name is Icarus,” he replied, mirroring her bow. ”It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
The show was over. Now that he no longer was preoccupied running for his life, Icarus finally processed who he was talking to. Another heretic! And a good one at that. She was not the first member of his new class he had ever happened upon, but she was the first who had not quickly lost his interest. ”So what brings you to the Snowdonia Complex at this time of year, Ms Midori?” He wanted to practically interrogate her. However, he knew better than to immediately drop a bunch of personal questions on a stranger. He would start off with easier ones. ”I doubt you came here looking for newbies to rescue.” TAGS:Midori HP:72% WORDCOUNT:977

The wolf which had previously been rather confident and indignant, admitted defeat in the face of this situation. This allowed the Heretic to take a moment to consider the situation. She started by examining the Heretic's level, displayed as 1. In the ensuing battle against the dire wolf, she didn't specifically remember the monster's level, only that it was definitely a couple levels above that of the snow-haired man. She wondered whether he should have gained a level or two if the monster had been killed in the process. Nevertheless, Midori wasn't very much of a fan toward killing monsters which resembled real-life animals. Fighting golems or snowmen were one thing, but fighting wolves that seemed as though they were real beings was another. It didn't help that Tongue of Nature worked on the wolves, giving them an extra level of personality. Her own level had increased by a very fast pace ever since she had changed to the Heretic class, but much of her progress was probably attributed to personal training.
Her initial impression hadn't been accurate, however. It appeared that according to his responses, the situation was not that of a personal training session but rather a self-defense combat sequence because the wolf had caught the man off-guard. In such a case, she was perhaps relieved that her help had managed to save the white magician from any further harm. Since he had only used Shackles of the Sentenced, she supposed that perhaps he hadn't taken any combat-oriented Heretic skills when starting out. Many Heretics seemed to follow the same idea, considering the class's suspicious nature in lore. It was better to take skills that posed oneself as a non-hostile person rather than to grab plenty of offensive skills that could attract the attention of the Wardens and People of the Land who already judged them so.
The man introduced himself as Icarus. She immediately recalled the Greek myth of the boy who flew too high to the sun with makeshift wings that he plummeted to the ocean in the end. It was a curious name choice and she wondered if there was any context to it. Many MMO players liked to give their characters a name that was either very important to them or reflected their self-image in a way, after all. The girl who used a Japanese word for a color as her name was no different. Nevertheless, he continued by inquiring on why she was here in the first place. Certainly this was a rather coincidental encounter since no one else really came to the Snowdonia Mountains ever since the Winter Ball had ended and the primary snows had already fallen.
"I've been taking a bit of a walk lately, myself. This place is actually near where I live in real life, so I was thinking of finding somewhere I recognize and seeing if this world is as similar as we thought. So far, it seems a little familiar... but I suppose there's really a big difference between familiarity and actually finding the place I've been looking for."
