It was a breezy spring morning, as the winter slowly passed away from the land once more, only to return later that year once again. Looking out of the window Bailin tried to dissect his [Warden Starter Armour] in his mind. He had heard rumors of a skill that would be a life saver on the higher levels, but for now all he could do was rely on his personal skills. ‘I suppose I could use the same lay out as the starter one… maybe improve it along the way. I think I could try and add some more plating to it, maybe make it very much alike to a half plate armour with some extra plating on the legs. That would ensure more than enough room for the cartridges and other things could add a small hook on the hips and back as well as an easy way to store weapons or other things.’ Bailin thought to himself as he took another look at his [Warden Starter Armour], which was standing on its armour stand, the weapons rack with his trusty old musket standing next to it. [break][break] Eyeing up his armour Bailin started scratching his bearded chin, sunken deeply in thought. ‘So if the chainmail is the base of the armour, it adds flexibility but not as much protection as plate armour, though that lacks the flexibility I’d want, limiting my movement options and as such my marksman skills. However I think I should add some plate parts, mostly on my lower arms, shoulders and eventually torso and back. The current variant I have here is a bit… lacking in plate parts, so perhaps I should try do to mix both chainmail and plate, perhaps even make it into an exoskeleton at the highest levels. But for now I suppose I should remain with reverse engineering the current model and adding improvements.’ He continued as he took another good look at the armour. There were arm guards made of thin steel with a small socket, allowing him to store the cartridges. On the left side of the chest was another small, thin steel plate, fastened with some chainmail rings to the shirt itself, which allowed for another cartridge to be held. All else was merely a simple chainmail, with some places reinforced by small, thin metal plates, most nowadays looking more like tinfoil than something that might actually offer protection. [break][break] ‘Indeed, if I could keep most of this armour chainmail indeed, add some plating later on, it would grant me the wanted mobility, lack in weight and still allow me to use all my skills and weapons properly. These Wardens weren’t foolish in their designs; chainmail is indeed the best choice, though a lorica segmentata would work as well, if one would adjust the shoulder parts to allow for the resting of a riffle against it. So I shall keep the basic form a chainmail and take a good look at plate armours and see if I can implement certain particulars of those on the chainmail, without giving away too much of the Warden class options and tricks. Well, let me get started. First up my measurements, then calculating the amount of rings I think I would need, as well as some metal plates… I just hope a blacksmith responds to my request. I think it will be a lot cheaper, as well as more practical to have a blacksmith here, instead of me having to keep going into town to get the materials I need.' [break][break] Drawing a t-shaped stick figure on his chalkboard with one of his chalk pieces Bailin started taking his measurements and writing them down on the corresponding part of the stick figure. His next step was to draw the model of the chainmail. ‘A simple one would be best. Short sleeves, for now, halfway to the upper legs, with a split at the front so I can keep moving my legs with ease and not be limited by a closed metal dress. Short sleeves as to keep the freedom of movement in my arms, I think this will work out fine.’ Bailin thought as he drew the design on his chalkboard and started to rethink all the steps to find any possible mistakes he could have made along the way and could prove disastrous for his entire experiment.[break][break]

Rook approached the house carefully. She didn’t know the owner of the contract too well and she often found people who lived where they worked to be quite eccentric. Too consumed by their own ideas, quite closed off to social graces. Not that she could claim to be better at social graces, rather socially graceful people were just easier to be around. Still, a job was a job. The weather was chill but insufficiently so to prevent her reaching her goal. A new door to knock on, and a new job to do with it. She walked along the path by the river, the warm, wooden creaking of the water wheel stopped her for a moment, she’d only ever seen one in games and movies before… then it occurred to her, she was perhaps still in a game. Just the highest resolution game she had ever cared to play. She continued on to the front door, she considered knocking there first… but then wondered if there would be a more appropriate entrance on the workshop. It seemed likely. “Knock knock.”She knocked anyway, better that than discover the owner kept ravenous guard dogs on site. Taking a guess at the theme of said guard dog, she suspected Dobermans, or some large shaggy hound straight for the Baskervilles’ marsh. While she waited, Rook rehearsed introducing herself. “Good morning, My name is Rook Saten, I saw your request for a scribe to assist you with a task.” Perfect, and she waited quietly. Klide walked into the forested area feeling calm and collected. There were birds over head, tweeting and singing in a chorus of high pitched voices. They were creating quite a beautiful and calming song that accompanied Klide as he walked along the gravel path. He had received a job to make a new armor set for Bailin. He had met Bailin before, during a rather intense and important excursion, and this crafting job would be a good opportunity for them to get together again. He walked down the path, his weapons safely stored away in his inventory. His tan skin shone in the sun, though the air was more chilly on this day, and his loose clothes did little to protect him from the light breezes that passed through him every so often. He had his hair tied back in a bun, and his jaw and chin were lined with stubble. Around him, wild animals ran through the forest. There were plenty of deer and rabbits passing by as he made his way through the forest, and ahead, he heard the creaking of wood and the splashing of water, as well as the bubbling of a stream. He walked up to the quaint house with the large water wheel. He had never visited Bailin at his home, and as he walked toward the door, he noticed a woman standing there as well, waiting for someone to answer when she knocked. The only response was a symphony of barks from behind the door. Klide shouted "Bailin, You're going to keep a lady waiting? Come on out!" Then he laughed a little and turned to the woman with a smile. "Hello there miss. I am Klide"Word Count: 284 Total Word Count: 284 Tags: Bailin , Rook

Contemplating his next step Bailin was suddenly interrupted by a knocking on the door. Unfolding his arms and removing the chalk piece from his hand he gently marched up to the door, turning the handle to open it and reveal the culprit who dared bother him during his research, unless of course it were the people he had requested to assist him with his work, those would be a welcome sight indeed. [break][break] “Welcome, I am Bailin, pleased to meet you. Whom might I have the honour of meeting?” Bailin asked courteous as the first thing he saw as he opened the door was an oversized hood covering something that most likely was of a female physique. [break][break] “And nice to meet you again as well, I’m glad you have accepted my invitation to join in my little project. It has been a while has it not?” Bailin asked as he noticed Klide standing next to the hooded creature.[break][break] “Oh, wait… are you by any chance here for the research project as well? If that’s the case, please both of you come in. I’ll take you to my theoretical lab and after we’ve made a plan we can head to the workshop to work on a prototype. Though perhaps the two of you would care for a drink before we start with the large task at hand? I’m pretty certain you two would care for a drink after your journey here. Though I admit, I have no idea what we have stored at the moment. I think Saskia did some shopping recently, though she still hasn’t started brewing… but I digress. Drinks are on me.” Bailin said with a wink as he let the two into his home. [break][break]

Rook was just turning to greet Klide when Bailin opened the door. She felt short, and she hated to admit, intimidated by the sudden pair intruding on her previously quiet moment. A failed listen check does wonders for one’s confidence. “Good morning, My name is Rook Saten...” She began to introduce herself to both of them, but then faltered. She’d practiced this a moment before, but now the comma was stretching into an uncomfortable pause. “It’s nice to meet you.” She said largely to Klide, her confidence wavering and strength flagging. Not today, she reached into her bag and pulled out a manilla folder bursting with scribe materials. and a solid ream of pre-prepared contracts. “Shall we begin with the Non-disclosure agreements, occupational health and safety forms or the remuneration documents?”A smooth opening, except for the breathless, hurried and forced part she chided herself. Yes, when cornered in the wild, bring your most intimidating side to the front. though her eyes glinted, and she tried not to salivate at the idea remunerations. “Well, I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to review them at a table, but I shall pass on drinks and must insist you do the same until after the health and safety documents are signed.” Rook looked squarely at Bailin for that one, since the documents largely related to her own health and safety while on his property. She checked her boots for clods of soil and took a purposefully careful step over the hearth, papers in hand. Word Count: 250Tagged: Bailin @blazeedge

Bailin came through the door very soon after Klide had shouted to him. He started to speak as soon as the door had cracked open. “Welcome, I am Bailin, pleased to meet you. Whom might I have the honour of meeting?” He asked courteously as he looked at the young lady, and then he looked at Klide and said “And nice to meet you again as well, I’m glad you have accepted my invitation to join in my little project. It has been a while has it not?” Bailin asked as he noticed Klide standing next to the girl. “Oh, wait… are you by any chance here for the research project as well? If that’s the case, please both of you come in. I’ll take you to my theoretical lab..." Klide was only half listening at this point "...a plan..." more words "...workshop to work on a prototype." Klide licked his lips and realized he was rather thirsty after the long walk. "...drink..." That word sounded good to him. "...large task at hand? I’m pretty certain you two would care for a drink after your journey here. Though I admit, I have no idea what we have stored at the moment. I think Saskia did some shopping recently, though she still hasn’t started brewing… but I digress. Drinks are on me.” Bailin said with a wink as he held the door wider and offered for them to both step in. Klide was about to say something when the girl next to him spoke up. “Good morning, My name is Rook Saten...” She began to introduce herself to both him and Bailin, but then faltered. “It’s nice to meet you.” She said, and it seem ed to Klide that it was largely to him (though he could not be certain). He smiled to the girl and said "You've got a very pretty name Rook." But she was already on a role and started the next part of her introduction. She reached into her bag and pulled out a manila folder filled with scribe papers, pens, and other scribe accessories, as well as a large, solid stack of papers covered with writing. “Shall we begin with the Non-disclosure agreements, occupational health and safety forms or the remuneration documents?” Oh god, all of these papers? She can not be serious. I hope I do not have to sign any of those. Klide thought to himself when he saw the stack and learned what it contained. “Well, I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to review them at a table, but I shall pass on drinks and must insist you do the same until after the health and safety documents are signed.” Rook said, this time her attention seemingly more directed at Bailin. Klide let out a small laugh as she stepped through the door. He walked passed Bailing as he stepped through the door, he grabbed hold of Bailins hand, in a firm grip. Then he pulled the man close and embraced him. He stepped back and smiled at the man. "Yes, yes it has been a while, a bit to long a while if you ask me." He looked at the man before him and said "I don't suppose you have some ale you could spare?" and before the young girl with all her papers could say anything to argue against him, he added "And I recommend you have one too Bailin, with all the papers you will have to sign ahead of you, you will need it."

“Pleased to make your acquaintance miss Saten. I do fear you might be a tad confused as to why I invited you here, that is, as a scribe. Though I admit, I am aware of some fine folk who wouldn’t mind to partake in the more shady areas of study, such as the kind that would be best described as humanoid testing and experimenting. However, as it is I more or less was hoping you would be so kind as to merely take notes of the steps we take. As such, payment is a bit… shady as I am uncertain if this will actually work. However, I will not ask you to invest anything but time, effort and perhaps some materials needed for your own additions into this project. As for the non-disclosure, for me it is rather obvious to keep our little project our little secret until it has been finished. It would be rather sour if this information leaked and someone would steal our glory, would you agree?” Bailin responded at the bureaucratic approach. He figured a scribe would be a tad bureaucratic but this was even worse than his parents when they had one of those stressful weeks at work; the ones that if he wanted to get something done, he would nearly have to fill out a form in threefold requesting an audience to discuss some minor thing. [break][break] “However, if you feel you absolutely have to do this… I fear we have little choice, though of course you will pardon us if we read everything very thoroughly, probably resulting in the project being delayed for quite some time. And as I stated in both the advertisement request and just now: I cannot pay you and as such it would cost you a lot of time, which we all could have spent working on the project. “Bailin continued as he led the two guests to the dinner table. [break][break] “And I concur Klide, it has been too long, but you know, guild stuff, girlfriend stuff, setting up several small projects and heading out on adventures tends to water down ones social interactions with old friends a wee bit. I fear I have to agree with the both of you regarding the drink, I most assuredly could just a bottle of decent whiskey to get through all that paperwork, however, before we sell her our souls, I suppose we should remain sober until we’ve read all. I just hope it isn’t too much to read, so we can get started quickly.” Bailin said teasingly, seriously hoping Rook would refrain from pushing the paper matter any further, but also understanding her for wanting to play it safe. He trusted Klide enough to know he would not betray him and if Klide was foolish enough, Bailin had enough ways of getting back at him, which made Rook the slight wildcard, creating a certain… impasse when it came to keeping the project a little secret. [break][break] “So, what shall we do? Shall we read, possibly sign, drink and work or shall we skip certain steps? Bailin asked as he sat down at the table, gesturing the others to sit down as well. Rook moved to the end of the table she’d gauged that Klide was the easy going type but Bailin probably took everything sufficiently seriously that she should be careful about such displays in future. She put folder down on the table and began taking out papers. Clearly she was serious about getting them to sign off on things. Less serious was the documents themselves, the first thing to leave the folder was a drawing of a cartoon cat. The picture promptly vanished from view under other, more respectable papers. “It shouldn't take long, I am not a lawyer and I do believe brevity is a virtue.” She passed a set of contracts out to Bailin, they were in a word, brief. Actually quite short and easily legible to the common person. Less than a page, hand written and straightforward. “I know it’s an imposition, but I truly believe that setting the groundwork early makes for a good understand of what everybody wants.” She started with the Health and Safety Document which actually seemed to be based on the Celtic tradition of hospitality. In effect, it’s a document stating she’ll be a good guest if he’ll be a good host. “As a well recited code of honor makes people more honorable, so too do contracts make peoples behaviors better. I pre-prepared the Non-disclosure agreements assuming you’d want to keep your work properly secret but if you feel you don’t need them I’ll keep them for next time.” She didn’t mention remunerations. Klide looked at Bailin when he was done with his monologue. "Yes. I do suppose it is better to be sober for the signing of important documents, but I get the feeling that there is little to worry about with these documents. Rook seems like a perfectly competent, organized person who would not trick us into some crazy contract." Klide turned to her and smiled. He stood as the other two sat at the table and began to go over the paper work, and right as Rook had begun to pull the paperwork out, Klide could have sword he saw a drawing of some sort at the top of the stack. He decided to let her be about it for now at least. He eventually sat down next to Bailin and looked at some of the papers. He skimmed the first over rather quickly and caught most of the details. “I know it’s an imposition, but I truly believe that setting the groundwork early makes for a good understand of what everybody wants. As a well recited code of honor makes people more honorable, so too do contracts make peoples behaviors better. I pre-prepared the Non-disclosure agreements assuming you’d want to keep your work properly secret but if you feel you don’t need them I’ll keep them for next time.” Klide looked over at Rook when she said that. He had hoped it was apparent that both him and Bailin were very honorable men. "Rook, I just hope you know, Bailin is probably one of the finest gentle men I have had the privilege of meeting in my time here. And not to praise myself or anything, but in my time here, i have yet to see a situation I am involved in where someone is disrespected" Klide then turned his attention to the document about non disclosure. "As for this, I have absolutely no intention of sharing anything with direct relation to today's project with anyone outside these walls, and Bailin has already stated that it would be sour if someone stole our glory." Ultimately, Klide left the decision to Bailin on whether or not they should sign the non disclosure document. and if Rook adamantly wanted him to sign anything else, he would not argue. “Well, if you insist and it makes you happy… I will read it and if I deem it worthy and fair I shall sign it, if that would put your mind at ease.” Bailin responded with a gentle smile as he started reading.* [break][break] “Klide, you are most generous with your words, though one might suggest that honeyed words are the downfall of empires. Yet I admit, you yourself are likewise a decent person. “Bailin said, not looking up from reading the papers. “Yes, I think it would be wiser to keep those non-disclosure papers for a later time. Not to threaten either of you, but I trust the both of you and I trust my friends in the guild. I am also fairly certain Dumah and Alette would be very disappointed in Klide if he did run off with the plans, which would only leave you, Miss Rook. As you’ve mentioned you will indeed keep the forms for a later time, which means you too are worthy of our trust.” Bailin said with a smile. [break][break] “Well now, if you’d follow me and please, do grab a drink, I will show you what I had in mind.” Bailin spoke, gently rising to his feet, paperwork in hand, whilst he gently strode towards the bedroom annex armoury annex theoretical lab. “If you would be so kind as to shift your attention to the chalkboard, you will see a crude drawing of me, with the measurements, which I would assume be useful for the crafting of the first prototype. If you would also be so kind as to take a look at the armour stand you will see the original armour, the kind one can buy at low levels. I however, wish to improve the basis, rather than having the old ones reforged like this one.” Bailin said, pointing out the chalkboard and armour. [break][break] “I would like to keep the base of chainmail, hence Klide the blacksmith, with Rook keeping a proper account of the steps we shall take. As such this is nothing of a dangerous nature, merely scientific and experimental. Anyway, I thought to add several pieces of plates to the armour, which would allow for the cartridges and the likes to be placed on the armour. If memory serves an alloy of either steel and gold or steel and copper would allow for the best flow of electricity and hopefully mana as well. Do you two have any thoughts so far?” finished Bailin explaining as he finished reading the contract, which seemed fair and logical to him.*[break][break]

Now that the contract was out of the way, Rook felt quite relieved. It didn’t occur to her how strange it was to create a social contract as an actual contract. In her mind, it was a strange world with many strange folk and one could never be too careful when living under the power of another. For a drink, her choice was water. She chose what seemed to be the emptiest work surface, furthest from the forge and prepared a spot for her papers to begin to work. Since she had no idea about the science of metallurgy. So she just went straight into what she did have skill in. The paperwork. “Does the energy in Warden class entropy cartridges operate in a similar fashion to electricity?” Rook asked a clarifying question before committing Bailin’s words to paper. “Also, in regards to wearing the cartridges, would they prove harmful to the wearer if their durability was reduced in the heat of combat? Are they explosive of acidic for example?”Aside from asking questions about what she didn't understand, Rook felt her work mandate was pretty clear. When people discussed the project, she wrote down what was said. When people worked on the project she recorded what was on the blackboard. When things were being made or unmade, she recorded the steps. While people were busy with other tasks she would busy herself organizing the notes and duplicating them into format suitable for binding into a book in the future. Klide noticed Rook getting ready for her work. She had already set up her papers. Her glass of water sat in the corner of the table she sat at, ready to be sipped from at any moment. "Listen Bailin, I know that Rook is ready, and you probably are too, but I can not do anything for you without knowing what I will be making. I think I understand the basics of the project. I will be making a set of chain mail armor with some added plate mail and room for capsules, however, that is very little to work off of. I need details on the capsules, and the materials you want to craft them out of." Klide sighed and took a small sip of his ale. "You said you wanted a Copper and Steel alloy, or maybe a Gold and Steel alloy, but that is not how it works. Gold and Copper both have a melting point of about 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, where as Steel has a much higher melting point of 2750 degrees Fahrenheit. With such a large gap in their melting points, it would be almost impossible to make a stable and strong alloy combining the two. However, I have come up with a few solutions that may tickle your fancy, if you would only humor me for a moment." Klide walked over to the chalk board near the forge and began to sketch a few ideas he had, ideas both for the capsules, and the alloys. His first design was a coil of metal wires: Coil . "This wire sketch is simple enough, but it has plenty of applications which I think suit your need for a flow of energy, be it electrical or magical. Firstly, if we make the core out of the copper or gold, or even if we combine the copper and gold into an alloy and use that as the core, we can have a highly conductive wire in the middle, and if we make the wires on the outside out of something more sturdy like steel, we can more easily protect the inner core, the problem then is that you will have a current running through your body, as steel is not an effective insulator. For this I recommend we use ceramic. You may be questioning my choice, but hear me out. If we use ceramic, we have something which is durable and strong, as well as very good at insulating high amounts of voltage and magical energy. Also, we can keep the wire fluid and easy to move by segmenting the ceramic like a chain. It will move quite fluidly, and hold the energy in the wires. Alternatively, We could also use rubber (which would actually be preferred), but I am not sure how available that is in this world." Klide would then answer questions and concerns, and then he drew a set of images for his next point. Cartridge 1, Cartridge 2. "These were my first thoughts when Rook mentioned cartridges earlier. I am not sure what you intend to store in them, so I do not know what to make them out of, or indeed, what they would look like. If you were planning to store energy of any kind in them, be it electrical, or magical, I would recommend the ceramic again, for the same reasons as I mentioned before. However, if you intend to keep little tools, and weapons, and other gizmos in them, then it makes more sense to make them out of either wood or steel. Wood is softer, so things inside may not become damaged as much, even if you move the capsules around a lot, and it does not rust, so it is lower maintenance than steel. However, steel is both fire resistant, and more durable. Either way, I need to know everything you plan. I need to know all the little things that you are tinkering with in your mind to make this armor as close to what you want as possible." Klide sat down in a small chair by the forge, and took another sip of his ale. He set it down on a little table close to where he sat and then spoke. "I am sorry for asking so many things at once, but I want to understand everything you plan for this project so that the armor ends up looking and working in the way you planned it to. That is all."Word Count: 740 Total Word Count: 1244+740=1984 Tags: Bailin , Rook

‘Good, good, this is exactly why I wanted the help of others. ‘ Bailin thought as he listened to both Rook and Klide voice out their questions and suggestions. [break][break] “To be honest, I have avoided the use of cartridges up until now and probably will do so for as long as I can, as I have little to no idea on how to make them, however I do know they do go to waste when one uses them. From what I’ve heard they are not harmful to the user, but more like small tricks packed in a nice package. I have no idea how they operate but I could only think of it as working similar to electricity, but alas, without the help of search engines and the internet, things are a bit harder to figure out. So in short, the way I suppose cartridges work are like a light and its switch: the cartridge will remain dormant until you need it, when you need it you flip the switch, in this case use the skill, the cartridge will activate and as such be expended after the use of the skill. Or at least, that is what I think on the matter.” Bailin spoke slowly, thinking on his words very carefully as to avoid creating more questions than answers. [break][break] “Hmm, I see, you make a valid point, though I wonder, the chained ceramic… would it not be a lot of work as well as be rather… brittle? As for the rubber, we might need to find ourselves an alchemist for it, but, hypothetically speaking, we are assuming mana is like electricity for convenience sake, would it not be possible that in this world, one would be unaffected by the current? I recon it might be worth a short, as it will save us time, effort and will either prove or disprove our current thoughts on the workings of mana, that being: it works like electricity.” Bailin responded intrigued by the ideas Klide shared with them. [break][break] “As for the cartridges, I suppose either could work. Like I said, they are to be used to store the Warden’s bag of tricks or at least some of them; though we could try and use them in such a way we use our inventory, but only to store one certain thing in it.” Bailin said, looking at the drawings of the cartridges. [break][break] “But let us start with the armour. I think the base of the armour should be chainmail, as it offers a nice amount of protection. I think that on the joints there should be some form of exoskeleton joints placed. These joints swill be powered by the core, from which thin wires, like you’ve drawn, run to each set of joints, though I suppose it would be easier to have them run to just the elbows first. If it does not work, the waste would be minimal. I think to best put in words how I picture it visually is as follows: the core will probably be located on the chest, from which, like a spider’s web, will run the wires to the shoulders, back, elbows and wrists. If those wires could be, in a way, interwoven with the chainmail, that would be marvellous.” Bailin suggested, his face in sunken in thought. [break][break] “I suppose steel would suffice, I personally prefer to stay away from close quarter combat as much as I can, however, on the occasion I have to join in the fray, I honestly would prefer to have steel armour rather than wooden. Though I admit, I did not know the differences in melting points, which means it was a good call to invite a blacksmith over.” Bailin continued with a grin, “And no worries about the questions, that’s why we’re here. So, what do you think would be best? Would it be possible to make the metal armour, with wires and all?” [break][break]

Rook wrote furiously, especially in areas far from her knowledge. In those places she wasn't sure which words were crucial and which were casual. She thought she may have to ask after the spelling of some of the more obscure words, but so far they’d stayed away from professional jargon. Except for fahrenheit, which she believed was some measure of temperature used in exotic places like the Bahamas and America. “Klide, I hear most of the terms being used have real world equivalents…“ Real world, that didn't sound right. “Old world, I mean. I've seen a lot of new materials related to the game world are we using the old world terms as an analogue for the new world materials as well, or are they not being considered?”She was still writing away. While the page was clean, her hands slowly became ink-stained. “Oh, and Bailin, how do you obtain your cartridges? Could you obtain some additional cartridges? Say… ten or twenty or so for the purpose of testing? We’re working with a lot of assumptions here with physics that arn't fully explored. I believe it would be best to test on a small scale to make sure our theories hold water.”She never looked up while she was speaking, she was gradually filling her space with little piles of paper vaguely sorted by some logic only she could decipher at a glance. “Hmmm, perhaps you could show us the current armor and cartridges in action? It may give insight.” Word Count: 250Tagged: Bailin @blazeedge

All of Bailin's points on the cartridges made sense to Klide, and the point on the wiring were also rather sensible. As he listened to Bailin, he began to light the furnace and prepare the tools he would be using by lying them out on a workbench to his left. "Yes..." He began to say as he worked on preparing everything. "...I suppose the wires could still function well without being coated. Honestly, I was also concerned about the ceramic being brittle and I was not certain if this world contains any form of rubber, so that was a concern for that. But i see your point with the current's interaction with flesh if it is mana rather than electricity. Thinking about it from a different angle definitely helps, and a have a theory on the wires now. Since our bodies in this world contain a high concentration of mana, the current should not harm the user, especially if my thoughts on the wires power source are correct. Would I be correct in assuming that the mana in the wires comes from the person they are connected too? Because if so, than the wires are less so wires, and are actually more like an extra set of veins and arteries, transporting the mana outside of the body." At this point, Klide had picked up a large ingot of steel, and placed it into the furnace for heating. "As for your idea on interlacing the wire with the rings in the chain, I will not be able to do that for a long time my friend. Based of of your measurements, It will take me anywhere from 23-25 hours of continuous labor just to finish the chain mail, and that does not include the time it will take to draw out all this steel so that it is thin enough and then make it into the rings. That should add another three or four hours to the process. You two actually may want to take several naps while I work, because there is little to do whilst I connect all the little chain links." Klide watched as the fat ingot slowly began to heat up. "As for your point on equivalencies and units of measure, Rook, I apologize if my use of Fahrenheit confused you. Both copper and gold have a melting point of about 1000 to 1100 degrees Celsius, where as Steel is closer to 1400 degrees Celsius. I am using the old world's units as an analogue for this world, because I am not certain of any major change in physics that could effect these factors in this world. As for your point on seeing the armor and cartridges, I agree whole-heartedly." He turned to face Bailin "This metal still has a while to go before being at the right temperature for drawing out, so if you could bring out the cartridges now, I may be able to analyze them, and prepare some ideas for any that I may be making for you." Klide turned to the ingot and turned it in the furnace to keep the heat distribution even. "I am sorry if either of you expected this to be a quick job, but by my calculations, all of the metal work will take at least 31 hours, possibly closer to 37 actually. Unfortunately, that does not take into account rest, and breaks for feeding. Bailin, I hope you do not mind me staying here for the next three days."

As Rook was writing as if the devil was on her trail, ready to devour her soul if she slipped up with her writing, Klide started lighting the forge. Suddenly Rook spoke out, asking Klide about the terms he was using and how they corresponded to this… new world. Klide responded with a conversion of the degrees in Fahrenheit to the degrees in Celsius and explained that he used the ‘Old world’ because, like Bailin, he was not aware of a change in the laws of physics in this ‘New world’. [break][break] Her next question regarded the cartridges, the question getting assistance of Klide. “Well, to be honest, I have no idea, I suppose we could make an attempt to create one after we have finished the armour. I know I received them when I started out, so I suppose it is bound to the Warden class. I suppose that is part of the laws of physics and nature that have been changed. I think the number of cartridges one can have is a set number, so twenty will be impossible to have for anytime soon. I think, though I should try it out some time to verify it, the Purity core of the Warden Armour charges a set amount of cartridges, which have some sort of setting which one can select and then use at a desired moment. However, this is pure speculation as I have not bothered with the use of cartridges so far. However, I do suppose we could do a field test later, once the armour is done and see what happens. I suppose you have a point in regards of testing before we start using our invention, but I doubt things would be bad as we have a working version right here.” Said Bailin as he pointed to his trusty level one Warder Starter Armour. [break][break] “Indeed, like Rook pointed out, we do tend to stick with things we know, such as comparing electricity to mana and vice versa, however it is also true that there are a lot of things we know nothing about. We might even put up a notice somewhere to find some bright minds and discuss the current laws of physics. Also, Klide, I was more or less expecting this to be a long term thing, I suppose it will not hurt as Saskia is off on some adventure or something, so the house will be empty bar us. I’m fairly certain we’re well enough supplied to be able to have a comfortable time here, so there is no need to rush things Klide. I think it would be fair to have Rook sleep in the bed, I can sleep nearly anywhere, so the couch is yours Klide.” Bailin said with a smile. [break][break] “Perhaps I could even assist you with the crafting of the chainmail and wires; perhaps we don’t even have to craft the wires…. Please grant me a few minutes to gather some of my own materials. I should have some coils lying about, which could serve as the required conductors, meaning you would only need to craft the chainmail rings. I think that should cut the time down to a more reasonable number. It would also give me something to do and as such make the Warden Armour not a blacksmith only thing, as the armour is actually supposed to be pretty nifty with its gadgets. As far as I’ve been able to… deduce though it is speculation, is that within this world blacksmiths can make all armours, except Warden Armour. I suppose those with mechanic as a crafting class can, though this might also turn out to be one of those hybrid constructs, much like the ships, which are mechanic and carpenter crafting classes. Though I suppose time will tell. Anyway, I’ll be on the other side of the room, looking for the coils, if you have any questions, just shout them at me.” Bailin said with a grin as he started to rummage through his piles of parts, looking for thin coils. Rook was glad she chose a seat well aware from the furnaces, even then it was getting warm in here. Or at least that was her excuse for going a little red at the idea of sleeping in a stranger’s bed. Bailin seemed fine to have the thing made with the knowledge they had now, and while they both set to work there seemed to be a bit of a lull. “Actually, I was referring to materials, we’re only talking in terms of steel and copper, not… Dragon scale and Eel leather.” She said quietly, with pulled examples out of thin air, she didn't actually know if those were things. “This would may already have a built for purpose solution, remember that the crafting and resource systems here were designed with intent, not scattered from exploding stars.”She wandered between the two recording details about what they were doing until she thought there was enough information on each step to replicate it. Then it struck her that something was happening here that she may not have seen before in her world of social isolation. “Oh, is this what they call insightful crafting? Melting ingots, forging rings… not using the menu? It is, isn’t it.”She became a little more interested in the process. She did not squee, verbally anyway. “Doesn’t insightful craft make something harder to maintain? Since the maintenance has to be done by somebody who has the insight, rather than just the appropriate type and level of craft?” Word Count: 250Tagged: Bailin @blazeedge

Klide chuckled. "Rook, I honestly did not know that there was such a thing as insightful crafting. I just do not want to loose the abilities I have. I have the knowledge to make this armor with my own two hands, rather than letting the system take care of little things. If I can do something with my own hand, sweat, and blood, then I will." Klide signed as he turned the ingot over again in the furnace. "A lot of people look at this world and see a game. I do not. I see another world I call home, and I will do as much on my own as I can, just as I did in the other world. It probably does not make the most sense, seeing as how it is more logical to save time and let the system do things, but I feel more accomplished by doing this as well."
Klide then turned to Bailin, who was still looking for his coils. "Bailin! Thank you for the help both with the sleeping arrangements, and with the wires. Unfortunately, even having ready wires will not cut a large amount of time out of the whole project, at most about 3 hours. As I said before, the armor itself with take a large majority of the time, about 25 hours." At that point, the ingot was at a temperature Klide could work with. He pulled it out of the furnace with a short pair of tongs and placed it on an anvil close to him. He picked up a hammer with a large, square shaped face, with gently rounded corners. Then he began to hit the metal at a slight angel, drawing it out very gradually and thinning it out. He would repeatedly turn the ingot on to the other sides, to keep the metal even as he drew it out. When it cooled too much, he put it back into the furnace and then repeated the process, gradually thinning the thick metal into a narrower chunk, slowly getting closer to the very thin stands he eventually wanted it to become. Rummaging through the piles of parts and materials Bailin slowly and steadily managed to increase the pile of satisfactory and required parts. Slowly the pile of long, thin coils started to become something of note and usefulness. Rook asked some questions whilst Klide was working on heating the ingot and preparing it to be made into something else. [break][break] “To be honest, I have no idea; I received my cartridges right from the start, so I reckon Dragon scales are out of the question, Eel leather sounds plausible to be honest, though I suppose it might be a fuss getting it. But indeed, it is as you say, things are implemented here, put here with a purpose and intent. So it should be a tad easier to gather things. Though I admit I tend to forget this is a game on occasion. It indeed feels more like a second home, a home I feel a lot more at ease, rather than a game. “Bailin responded, agreeing with Klide on not seeing this world as just a game. [break][break] “You were unaware of such possibilities? And here you are, writing things down yourself instead of using a menu.” Bailin said with a grin, “The same goes for metalworking or, in my case, engineering. You can use the menu and quickly assemble a common item or you do it yourself, which I think is a lot more fun and it might offer a somewhat special effect, though that is currently just a possibility I haven’t been able to confirm as of yet. I don’t know if it requires more maintenance, I suppose it would not because you’ve dedicated a lot of time and effort into it and this is still a game of sorts. But we could use this project as a long term thing and see what happens.” Bailin continued as he gathered the various coils in both his hands and placed them onto the workbench. “Say Klide, I suppose we should straighten these out as to make them a lot easier to work with, what do you think? And pray do not worry, as the saying goes, you scratch my back, I shall scratch yours.” [break][break]

The heat and the intermittent steady clang started to make her uncomfortable. She began using Mana Trance intermittently to drown out the noise while she wrote. Gradually time was passing, and she was becoming less tense, slightly unwound. Rook was confident that she’d recorded enough of Klide’s doing that a competent metallurgist would be able to follow in the future, though, it certainly wasn’t an instruction manual for the uninitiated. “I would feel more at ease if it was just game.” Rook replied. “The overlay of game physics and real physics still sometimes frightens me, raid zones, events and quest remnants.”“And writing is different, I still use the menu to make papers and inks.” She continued. “That aside, how much detail did you want in your record keeping? I think I’ve got enough that Klide could replicate the steps, but I imagine honest to goodness smiths are a rare breed here. Do you want notes sufficient that a novice of the field could pick up the task?”Indeed, Scribing was different. The subclass enhanced her natural literacy, improved her handwriting in both form and speed. It had been a diminishing skill for her in the old world, ever being replaced by use of the keyboard. Ever being distracted by the simple mindless joys the internet likes to heap upon a person. She wondered if she could create an animated gif, a flip book perhaps of simple characters. If Bailin didn’t request more detail, perhaps she would do just that. Skill Used: Enchanter: Mana TranceWord Count: 250Tagged: Bailin @blazeedge
