[attr="class","solace"] Capsule sat on her small kitchen table, legs folded Indian style as she perused her dwindling research list. Of the few things left to make, tranquilizers was what she intended to focus on today. It was not as simple as her last creation, and required quite a bit of leg work on her end, but it was doable. If she could suffer through the process of making gelatin, she could make tranquilizers.
Chloroform was originally what she desired to make, but then rejected the idea after further thought. She wanted to make something that could be injected, and chloroform was fatal when ingested. It was better off used as a gas than an injector, so it would not do at all to accidentally kill her clients. So rather than make something that was mostly chemical based, Capsule was going to fall back on her old sleeping potion research for inspiration.
Chamomile leaves, Valerian root, and other sedative herbs would not be making an appearance in this concoction, however. The Pharmacist had looked further, seeking Landers and Adventurers alike for some assistance. Said people were all those who held the Gardener subclass. Most of them were not very helpful in hindsight, but a very select few were able to steer her in the right direction. One suggested that she use brown or green seaweed, which just so happened to contain the right chemical properties needed to make a sedative. She was warned that it might not be as strong as something more chemically based, to which Capsule just grinned and said, "Just who the hell do you think I am?" She was going to make it work.
The other ingredients she needed were ice, water, and solvent. If she were making chloroform, she would need shock powder and calcium hypochlorite… which was pretty much just bleach. Toxic, toxic bleach. Capsule had all of these ingredients, of course. The seaweed was painstakingly acquired earlier that day, from the sea that lapped at the Thames' coastline. It was left to hang over the warm stove to expedite the drying process. A bucket of ice was in the fridge, and a jug of cool water was resting beneath the table. The solvent was nestled among her supplies. And as for the container...
An enthusiastic bark greeted her as she set her feet down on the floor. No, she would not be using her dear pup as the vessel, but he was currently crouched beneath it. A bucket was not something a legit laboratory would use, for sanitary reasons, among others. Capsule, on the other hand, did not have access to a proper lab right now. She did go through the trouble of sterilizing her work station, however. The bucket was pulled up and away from the puppy, and carried back to the sink to wash and rinse. [attr="class","solace"] The bucket was left in the sink, out of Bosco's reach, while she went to check on the seaweed. The seaweed was not quite stiff, but they were dry enough to be of use. Capsule carefully unpinned each piece from above the stove, and collected them all into her empty mortar. The Malinois puppy darted around her bare feet as she made her way back to the table, and flopped down on her feet when she stood still. The warmth from the puppy's thick fur was well received; despite the oven being on, the cottage was chilly at times.
The crappy little table wobbled during the grinding process, and with good reason. The seaweed was not crunchy, and could have benefited from being dismantled into smaller bits first. Rather than take out her knife, though, Capsule resorted to ripping the underwater plants into strips. The table shook more as she pounded the seaweed with her pestle. Eventually, the plant matter succumbed to her administrations, and with some perseverance, she was able to reduce them to powder. It was amazing how Bosco could sleep through all of that.
Capsule pushed the mortar and pestle to the side, and with a gentle shake of her foot, dislodged the napping puppy. Bosco uttered a soft snort of confusion, but went promptly back to sleep once he was settled on his side. Capsule left him alone to retrieve the bucket, along with the jug shoved under the table. The bucket was white and almost see through, though a large beaker would have been preferable.
The bucket was filled halfway with water, and then sullied by the powdered seaweed. The brownish powder sat on top of the water for a few seconds, and while Capsule was gathering the other ingredients, slowly began to sink. Chunks of ice were tossed into the bucket with little care, whereas the solvent was poured directly over the clumps of seaweed still clinging to the surface. She was not even stirring, and already she felt dissatisfied. The bucket might as well contained chilled seaweed soup. Perhaps she needed more chemicals?
Bare feet padded across wooden floors as she left the kitchen to venture out into the living room. The small trunk she kept beside the couch was opened and rummaged through. The tranquilizer would not function without a little chemical kick to it, even if it came at the expense of her customers' well-being. The drug was bound to be toxic in some way, but it did not have to be severe. "Ah. Here you are." Her hand came out with a small bottle of acetone -- the stuff commonly found in paint thinner and nail polish remover. It was flammable. [attr="class","solace"] After busting out her small stash of acetone, Capsule poured a healthy amount into the bucket. The solvent previously added to the concoction would ideally lower the toxicity some, and if not… oh well. It's not like the tranquilizer would be used for innocuous purposes, anyway. While sedatives and the like were originally created with good intentions, perverts and predators have turned them into rape drugs. When people thought of chloroform nowadays, what came to mind? Someone in a dark alley being subdued by a sickly sweet rag, and dragged off to either have their organs harvested, or sexually assaulted. She could only imagine the tranquilizer being used by malicious Adventurers who wanted to hurt others, or those who wanted to put a troublesome monster to sleep.
Capsule stretched out on the floor to cuddle her dozing puppy, eyes half closed. The latter reason was definitely her excuse for today's research. She may be at a higher level, but there were times when she just wanted to pass peacefully and not be goaded into fighting every sewer rat that showed their noses. That included scrappy Adventurers or Landers itching for a fight, but in its current state, the tranquilizer would require her to get close to the other person for administration. Syringes and maybe ampoules were her only means of transport for the liquid, though something like a tranquilizer gun could be made in the future. For that she would need a mechanic, correct?
The albino's eyes widened in alarm. One moment she was thinking about guns, the next she was dozing off. Lying on the floor like this was dangerous. It was comfortable at the moment, but she would wake up feeling sore all over and regretting her life. That, and she had a possibly toxic mixture resting on the table above her. And now she was feeling groggy, despite not passing out for more than a few minutes.
With a grunt, Capsule rolled out from under the table. Taking a nap did not sound like a bad idea, but this research was close to being completed. She hoisted the somewhat heavy bucket into the air, and with steady hands poured a fraction of the contents into a nearby beaker. An unpleasant smell wafted up from the bucket to assault her nostrils and eyes. It did not smell like bleach or anything of the sort; more like overly sweet candy that had gone bad after a while. There was also a hint of seaweed. Success was up in the air, but so was her arm.
Her Toxicity Tolerance skill was almost always toggled on when performing crafts, research, or during battle, but right now it was set to off. The only animal at her immediate disposal was her beloved Bosco, and there was no guarantee the dog would survive the dose she was about to give herself. What better guinea pig was there than a Pharmacist? Her level was also high enough to negate an instant KO, unlike Bosco. "I hate needles…"
A thin cord was tied around her bicep, like she'd seen nurses do countless times. Capsule tightened and readjusted the cord several times, until the largest vein on the inside of her elbow was visible. It was the… basilisk vein? Something like that. Capsule had donated blood a few times back in the real world, and recalled asking a nurse about her veins. It was one way to ease the worry and pain that came with having a huge ass needle shoved into your arm. The needle on her syringe was thankfully smaller and easier to get in. The pain was the same: just a prick.
Capsule slipped down to the floor as the tranquilizer invaded her bloodstream. The point of needle insertion burned a little, enough to concern her, but it was too late to stop now. The syringe was empty, and her hand was barely cooperating. Growing dizzy by the second, Capsule slumped over onto her side, eyes staring unfocused at the wall across from her. She couldn't move. Her thoughts were rapidly slipping away, and her vision was darkening. This experience was very similar to the time she was put under to have her wisdom teeth removed… A black curtain obscured her consciousness as she was rendered into a coma-like state.
Bosco yawned and stretched as he awoke from his nap. Being the curious and affectionate puppy he was, the dog scuttled over to his owner, who appeared to be sleeping on the floor. This would not do. The dog was refreshed from his nap, and wanted to expend that energy by playing. He pounced onto Capsule's chest, and showered her face with licks. Nothing. Frustrated, the dog barked into her ear, an act the woman hated. She would wake up and scold him until he fell silent, but today… Bosco whimpered. He had barked until his throat was hoard, but nothing.
Capsule was being strange, and his usual methods were not working. Perplexed, the puppy clambered all over the unconscious woman, eventually settling down on her lap. A sad, lonely whine disturbed the eerie silence.
