When the Chinese New Year event was over, Adler had asked Capsule if the ginger would like anything made from stone or paint, to which the latter had replied with a request for a Frenmic Rabbit sculpture. After all the help Adler had received from her, she was not inclined to say no. And so it was that the fair-haired Guardian found herself in the Windsor Greatwood southwest of London, with the sole purpose of finding and painting the likeness of one monster.

Addler scoured the valley for a secluded spot where she wouldn’t be disturbed. She finally settled in a copse of trees where a small hollow in a thicket of bushes gave her enough space, sunlight, and camouflage to draw the rabbits that were about to spawn no less than three meters away. Saving her paint for later, Adler took out a piece charcoal and some old canvas. When the rabbits finally spawned, she immediately started sketching.

Her lines were short and sporadic; a slight curve for its nose, a long wave for its ear, they eventually connected to one another to form rough outlines in different parts of the canvas where the different poses o rabbits were being recorded. Partially hidden beneath her right hand was a bunny cleaning its ear, looking straight down at the next rabbit that had been captured mid-leap, its tail towards the viewer as it tried to hop away from sight. The patch of canvas near her elbow was blank, but only because Adler seemed to be locked in a staring contest with one of her subjects and was frantically drawing without looking down.

The sketches weren’t coming along as well as she had hoped. As an animator, Adler didn’t have to worry about keeping realistic details and proportions, so she was a bit out of practice with realism. The lines on the piece of old canvas were all connected now and had a definite resemblance to the creatures, but they were also thick and dented in places where she had tried salvaging the base to make it look less cartoonish. Adler let out a vexed yell, scaring off the Frenmic rabbits in the area, but not attracting any of the other monsters. She closed her eyes and focused on the flashes of light behind her lids. Prediction. When she opened them again, nothing seemed to change. Frowing, Adler closed her eyes again and concentrated harder. Prediction. On the second repeat, it finally worked. Adler felt the familiar sensation on her irises even before she opened her eyes to see. The cool down indicator appeared over her skill in the hotkey bar, but no ghosts appeared. She had to either kill more monsters or move on.

She chose the former. Adler eliminated Dull Green Slimes and Young Pittered Boar as usual, but if there had been any more Frenmic Rabbits around, she would not have hesitated. Her earlier aversion to killing them had been dispelled the more time she spent hunting for food, because that was what they were. Five minutes later, after she was certain nobody was around, Adler settled into her hiding place beneath the bushes. Prediction. Monsters appeared this time, rabbits among them. The timers on their heads showed figures closer to the five minute mark however, so Adler rested her head on her arm for a little shuteye. She fell asleep, dreaming about more failed sketches of rabbits and green slimes and boars.

Adler started awake at grunts from a nearby Pittered Boar. She remembered her dream vividly, and even then she had failed at capturing the exact likeness of a particularly fine looking rock (though it had seemed less silly at the time that she was even attempting to do so). Within that dream however, she stopped caring about realism and more about impact. The rocks in her dream had been drawn exhibiting a wide array of emotions despite not having faces to get clues from.

A Frenmic Rabbit hopped towards her, probably hoping to dig something up around the roots of the very tree she was beside. Adler watched intently as it came nearer. About a meter away, when a slight breeze hit Adler’s back, the rabbit stopped, sniffed the air, then fled. ‘How filthy am I?’ She wondered idly, but she cleared her mind of thoughts and imagined what pose she’d put the rabbit in. Once she had it in her mind’s eye, she took the piece of charcoal and canvas she used previously out from her bag and starting drawing on the cloth’s reverse side where it was still clean.

The figure she drew was of a plump rabbit resting on its hind legs as it stood tall, arms side by side over her belly while its nose was tilted up and its ears perked; the same pose as, she imagined, an old lady with pince-nez glasses would have while she loosely held her purse over her hips while looking up to read the train schedules at King’s Cross. She was surprised to see that it looked even more real and alive than any of her other drawings, which was ironic, given that she had finally stopped trying to do so.

Adler continued drawing within her hiding spot. She was pleased with her sketch, but she needed to draw more references of the statue’s design from different perspectives. She played with the idea of adding a shawl and glasses to it, but realized it would be more difficult to add fine details to a stone sculpture than it would to a painting.

When she was certain she had made enough drawings and notes, Adler quietly put everything away in her Mary Poppins bag and surveyed her surroundings. Once again, it seemed she had no one to worry about. She hurried back to London through the normal route, on to the room she had rented for a month. It had seemed expensive when she paid the landlord for two months in advance, but it was cheaper in the long run. If she had had the money, Adler would have leased the room for a whole year (she couldn’t bring the money back with her if anyone ever found a way out of the game anyway), but she hadn’t had enough on her at the time. When she finally did (after copious amounts of hunting), she found that money was much easier to come by than expected, so now she was on the lookout for a better room in a more favorable location.

After stopping by a stall for a jug of milk, Adler entered an apartment building that was once clad in gleaming obsidian marble. A bit of the exterior was intact, but most of the tile had fallen off and exposed the cement behind it. The People of the Land who owned the building had worked to remove most of the plant life that had taken over the rest of the city, but otherwise left the façade alone. She climbed four flights of stairs to get to the top and went around the banister to get to her room. Hers was one of those with small windows that opened to a view of the brick wall belonging to the building precisely three feet away. Ten square meters wasn’t much, but it was hers.

Adler put her things down and set up her easel. A sheet of plywood rested there for her to tack canvas on, which she did. She redrew the rabbit onto the new piece of old canvas, and once that was done, she positioned a metal pail beneath the wood. She took out the milk she had just bought and poured the liquid over the canvas, a fixative to seal the charcoal in place. She repeated the process twice before smoothing it over and leaving it to dry. Meanwhile, Adler retrieved her set of paints from under a loose floorboard and her brushes from the window sill. Using a carved piece of rock as a palette, she began to mix paint.

Adler practiced painting with her mixtures on her spare bit of canvas before moving onto the real thing. Aside from testing the colors, she wanted to experiment with textured brush strokes, something that didn’t matter as much when you worked as a digital animator. She started with the background first, painting around the outline of the rabbit. The image of the animal as a lady checking the train schedule wouldn’t go away from her head, so Adler had an idea.

Mrs. Tippyfoot stood on a platform carved from a fallen tree. Large pumpkin carriages pass behind her, letting rabbits in and out onto another platform. She is looking up at a large leaf that seems to cast a shadow of two hands and a few notches—a clock. Perhaps she was late for an important date.

It was a playful image; there wouldn’t be much contrast between the predominantly pastel red background and the white subject, but she was going for joy instead of drama anyway. When she had the area immediately around the rabbit painted with details, it was time for Adler to lay down the foundation for the rabbit itself. The base coat was brown, but she layered grays and whites over it in that order. Few people realized how much white paint is used by artists; it wasn’t like in kindergarten, where lazy kids thought they were being clever by leaving the spots on the paper untouched where they were supposed to be white, or everyone had a box of crayons with at least three different shades of each color and mixing them didn’t really work. Adler only had five to work with—red, yellow, blue, white, and black. There were more available of course, but the owner of the store she patronized insisted that she work on the basics. This was why she needed so much time to mix paints in the first place.

When Adler had done all she could for the painting, she stopped to eat her basic fare of bread and cheese. It was funny to think that, back in the real world, she (and other Brits like her) were tired of the European staples, but after a long period of time of everything tasting like stale saltines, it was like her palate went through a reboot. The plain white bread that a lot of people had taken for granted suddenly bursts with flavor. Unlike the other players though, She retained the diet of simple meals she had adopted to save money. No one knew what had happened to them and how similar this world was to their own, but Adler didn't want to gorge on the finest meals the players could come up with, only to grow tired of it and crave different flavors they couldnt have. It seemed better to take things slow then, and the miney she saved now could be put to better use.

After half an hour, she began work on the sculpture she promised Capsule. The common stone she picked up for the job was the easiest to work with among those offered at the store and was perfect for beginners, though the finished product would probably break if it ever fell over, much less stand the test of time. Adler used a mallet and chisel to carve out the general shape she wanted; without any details the standing rabbit looked like an oddly flat duck with a particularly long bill. When the rock had been formed as close to the shape as she dared (in case she broke off too much and had to start over), Adler switched to using her starter kunai to carve out the details. Typically, large nail files called rasps were used to gradually strip away bits of rock to the desired shape, but she had only recently found out about the kunai's capability to gouge stone and so was more inclined to practice using it, leaving the traditional method for later experiments. In consideration of the stone's brittleness, Adler made shallow cuts that were more akin to shaving than digging. It took her the whole afternoon to produce the rough shape she wanted, but at least by the end of it, it was very obviously a rabbit.

Adler worked late into the night, stopping briefly for some food when the noises her stomach made became too distracting. Unlike the real world where there was always the sound of cars or some kind of machinery humming in the background, the game world—ironically—seemed unnaturally silent. Though she was getting used to it, Adler still focused on the grating sound of metal on rock instead of the silent ringing in her ears. She took even smaller shavings than before, to the point where it seemed like she was getting more powder than bits of stone. She was able to define each ear, each paw, and even each finger to an extent. There was no way to get it any smoother without using a file or sandpaper, which she refused to do for this particular piece.

It was three in the morning before Adler went to sleep, not because she was finished, but because she had nodded off and almost ruined both the sculpture and the painting that was still in front of her. When she woke at eleven the next day, she went straight back to work. Adler added more detail to the rabbit’s ears and tail, two of the sections she hadn’t gotten around to the night before. By three in the afternoon, she was finally done. The rabbit looked like it could have grown from some kind of rock crystal because it had multiple facets instead of smooth contours, and Adler found herself wishing she had more precious material to work with. Still, she hoped that Capsule might appreciate the (unintended) pun. Drugs were in her domain after all.
