At the edge of the forest, shortly before the sun's noon time zenith, sat a young man. While not visible from outside the treeline, he was sitting in a tiny opening amongst the trees, an unadorned longsword laying within reach. He had a patch of damp moss in his fingers, inspecting it as if it was the first time he had seen such a thing.
It didn't feel strange, the man thought quietly, but that is precisely why it was nothing but strange. Placing the moss down next to him with a mental sigh, the man took a slight moment to focus his mind.
Jayven. That was what the text read at the top of the status screen that had appeared. It was the name of a character in a worldwide popular MMO game called Elder Tales. And the person that now embodied that character's mind and body, was that solitary man sitting in the forest.
Well, he thought, if I'm gonna use this body, I might as well use the name for it too. The now provisionally named Jayven recalled the events that unfolded since he had awoken in this video game world hours before.
Having come to in some kind of cathedral, Jayven shook awake with a start. The unfamiliarity of the place caused him to sprint outside, which threw him for another loop. I'm obviously in a city, Jayven thought, but its overgrown in vegetation, the people are dressed like cosplayers, and what the heck am I wearing??
Covering most of his body was some kind of leather, Jayven immediately likened it to his fencing suit. He then noticed a sword on his left side, definitely a longsword, hanging sheathed from a belt off his waist. Lastly, in the small of his back was tote bag, with a pistol that looked more like an antique secure in a holster strapped to the bag.
"I must be dreaming," Jayven mumbled under is breath. After saying this he remembers that all his dreams of late have quickly turned to nightmares, back to living in the streets or watching brothers in arms die in a macabre show of bullets and flames. Jayven determined himself to be lucid, and simply put, decided to run, attempting to meet these nightmares face to face.
The living city persisted, armor and equipment likewise, as the man navigated through its streets, seemingly inhabited by beings of widely varying description. There was slight breeze in the air, giving Jayven the impression he was actually outside, enjoying a quite and pleasant day like any other. He jogged past a baked goods vendor, smelling the cinnamon glaze from afar.
Whatever this dream was, Jayven mused, it is very much convincing, and I wouldn't mind a second visit. He continued his quick pace through the city, however he had slowed to take in the sites around him. "Looks a bit like Elder Tales," Jayven noted his feelings of déjà vu aloud and decide to cut back on his time spent playing the online game.
