Furniture. This was one of those trickier crafting projects for Elkeid. The woman was used to picking out furniture to suit a theme, not making them. That was a job for the carpenters of the world, or a machine, or however furniture was mass produced. Her first piece would be very amateurish, but also easy enough for someone of her lack of training. It would not be a table (goodness!) or a bed or stool (please no), but a strange object requested by an acquaintance. She was expected to make a mouse hole that squeaked, to accompany another gag gift. Quite frankly, she thought the whole thing was downright asinine and childish. A child, like Sorrel, would find it amusing, but what kind of adult…? Never mind.
Elk shook her head, uttering a soft "tut tut" of disapproval. Oh well. She could not say no, could she? This was helping her, too. Lord knows she needed to raise her crafting level. Fifty one was her goal, and she was not that far off. All she needed was to persevere…
The first step was to dip into her cache of chopped wood. Since moving out into Moon Dance Forest, in an area that was thickly inhabited by trees and elk, she had a steady supply of wood. Good, strong wood. A small patch was cleared for the sake of easier moving and to fill up her stock, and that chopped wood was currently resting in a crate near the fire place. It was here that she plucked out a smooth block of wood. It was much too thick in its current state to work with, which was to be expected. She could carve out what she needed in no time. But first…
Elkeid set the wood down on the table, and with her hand, chopped it clean in half. Using cutting tools was for chumps. She cracked her knuckles, ignoring the slight ache in the side of her hand. Good wood was tougher than it looked, but her level was still higher than the fallen tree. She shook one slice of the wood free from the other, and lightly blew away to any debris clinging there. This was good wood, yes.
With that step done, she grabbed a piece of chalk and sat down at the table. She drew a rough shape into the wood -- a rectangular strip with a small circle at the center. The hole was unnervingly tidy, as though the mouse had been given lodgings by the homeowner. It was a reoccurring theme in cartoons, namely Tom & Jerry. She believed that the mouse even had a door over his hole in some episodes. Cartoons were… curious in their lack of rationale. As a child, she could hardly appreciate most of them. She preferred to be out at night, gazing at the sky and finding constellations. Ah, those were simpler times… But those days are gone now. With an outline made, she was ready to get into the harder stuff.
