Once more at his workbench he was resolved to progress in his Alchemy. According to the local Alchemists in the city a basic magic accessory required very few ingredients and a handful of mana fragments to function. Though the magitek was weak, a lot of that could be said to stem from just how weak the mana fragments were. Though he suspected having higher quality materials would probably increase the conductivity of the item as a whole allowing the power granted by the fragments to be used more efficiently. The abilities that these basic accessories have been observed to bestow were mostly for magic type users. In time he hoped to be able to figure out a way to create items that would help him personally by boosting his hit points or defense. Hit point regeneration would be wonderful as well.
However he was going to stick with the basics on this one first. He was going to make something that they already knew how to make just for the practice. His folly was his desire to rush ahead without a firm grasp on the fundamentals. Given a head start only by his knowledge of technologies not of this world, but it must be remembered that this world didn't have a lot of the basics he used to take for granted. And so they would need to work their way up to that. You can not make a car until you have invented the wheel after all. Though thankfully they had the wheel already.
The materials were simple. He needed but three mana fragments, two old filaments, and one 1 old diode. The items minus the mana fragments were laid out neatly on his table. Now it was just a matter of figuring our just what he needed to do. The diode would probably serve as the main containment unit for the mana fragments while the filaments would likely serve as conductors for the magical energy to flow through. He assumed that he would need the filaments to connect with the fragments and back to each other to create an energy loop. They would also need to be connected to the diode as they couldn't just float around in there. With how fragile mana fragments were that was just asking for it to break the first time that you started to run around or got hit by something. And an item that broke on it's first use was less than worthless because if you were expecting to be able to count on it and then found yourself unable to then you'd be in trouble.
So he would have to be careful while assembling it and while taking it apart. Slowly he unscrewed the top end of the diode, setting the cap to the side before reaching in with tweezers to take out the damaged filaments from inside. They would do him no good from the state they were in. Though the ones he had found to replace them were hardly in better shape. But at least they should grant a solid connection. That was all he needed for this basic test item that he was creating. Once he had it all worked out he could work on making something better down the line.
