Huh?
Drew's blank stare against the naturalization of a city in ruins was short lived with audible confusion from several people nearby.
His mind was busy taking in and reflecting on this new sensation around him. Wait, around him?
Looking around, display names of various adventurers appeared over their heads with HP gauges. Oh..., right. Drew was playing Elder Tales, having logged into the new British server, the Unfounded Kingdom, for the Novasphere Pioneer expansion. A rush of fear overwhelms him. Looking at his hands, it wasn't as big from what he last recalled. They were that of a woman's. A bit longer and more petite, more slender.
Touching his face, hair, and foxtail ears...it just dawned on him as he fell onto the moistened earth. He's Felenoria. Felenoria Lihzeh. He's a woman now.
"What...?" Felenoria gasped quietly to herself.
Shifting her gaze left, right, then left again, this couldn't be happening. Even more of the other adventurers were panicking in one manner or another. If what he, or rather she, is thinking right now...she's stuck in Elder Tales. Tension from the rising fear felt lodged in her throat. What will happen next?
Fighting the urge in her throat, she felt a bit exhausted. Emotionally rather than physically for some reason. The rush subsides, giving much needed breathing room as Felenoria begins to calm down and reassesses her new situation.
Slowly picking herself back up from off the ground, Felenoria began to realize that she's in London, or rather Londinium. In the distance she could see Westminster Abbey.
Some of the other people start questioning out loud as to what just happened. A couple start crying or screaming out loud. What an emotional mess this realization is escalating to.
Backing away slowly, Felenoria instinctively fades from the crowd as more people began to realize that they're stuck in the game. Finding an alleyway nearby, she passes a couple of adventurers and finds some empty space to think all this through on her own terms.
Taking deeper breathes, she peeks out from the alleyway, noticing one of the adventurers flipping his hand through the air in front of him. Flipping as if he's using the menu. The menu!
Mimicking, it took a few tries, but finding the proper flick of the wrist, the status screen opened, startling Felenoria to almost the point of falling on her buttocks. Taking a few moments to absorb yet another new experience, she taps on each tab. Now...where does she stand in this game.
From inventory to character level to friend's list, she was a complete nobody. A level 1 with no friends.
No friends? Oh, right. The whole reason Felenoria is here is because of her therapist.
"Are you alright, lass?"
"Wah!" Felenoria's shrieked in surprise as someone called her from behind.
It was an old man. Bald with some simple tunic.
"My apologizes. I did not mean to startle you, my dear."
"It's fine. Please excuse me..."
"W-wait a moment."
"Please...I must go," Felenoria shifts her gaze away from this simple old man.
"I only wish to know if you're alright?"
That's it?! Just a simple question? Why does he care? Is he just lonely, or maybe has some ulterior motive?
A swelling of frustration, confusion, and anxiety ebbed back into her throat again. Of course she's not ok! Heck, a bunch of other players are not doing well either. Why is she in a video game? Wait, is he a NPC, or a real person?
Checking his status bar, the old man is classified as a Lander. If memory serves right, Lander is the British term for the People of the Land. She didn't read all of the back story if that's suppose to mean all People of the Land are Landers, or if Landers are People of the Land living in the Londinium area?
"You remind me of my daughter."
Felenoria tries to leave, only for his weak hand tug on her starter Wardenscale armored sleeve. She had the power to escape, but hesitated.
"She even tried avoiding me too," the old man chuckles.
Turning around, Felenoria was presented an apple from the old man's other hand.
"Please, eat. It will help calm you down."
Taking the apple out of his time-worn hand, she held it with both hands, taking a small nibble. At least the food tastes the same like the world she comes from. A little sniffle secretly escapes her tense look. It took some effort to not let her hands quiver with anxiety. Taking a few more small bites, Felenoria felt a small relief flushing her face.
"How do you feel now?"
"Better. Thanks," Felenoria eases her tensed tone slightly.
"Of course, my dear." The old man shifts his gaze to the crowd up ahead. "My, it is quite noisy today. Did something happen? On second thought, I best be off before my wife worries about me. You know how women are, right?"
The old man fell for it. Felenoria is really a guy. Only stuck inside his female avatar's body for some begotten reason. How was he suppose to know what women think about their man walking around town, offering an apple to a complete stranger?
Faintly smiling to feign a like-able, courteous response.
The old man soon left.
Slumping her back against the alley wall, Felenoria slide down, hold her partially eaten apple carefully. Taking another bite, a new thought just occurred. The log-out button. Flipping to the button, Felenoria would need to let a GM know that something is way wrong here. As she hit the button, an error symbol with its corresponding error sound effect triggered instead.
What...? No...no...no...no...
Holding her head tightly, she realizes the amount of pressure she's placing on the eaten apple. What will she do now? What will happen back home?
Not like her home was worth going back too. Really, who would go back to a world with no job opportunities to pay for your living, despite having a college degree, and face the fears of debt hanging over one's head for the rest of their working career? Really, this sudden turn of events is rather a blessing in disguise. If she's stuck in this world, then her former commitments are gone, voided.
A new leaf has been turned.
Lifting her head up, seeing the sky, she began to realize the warm sunlight shining down.
Maybe a walk around town could give her some ideas as to what to do.
Standing back up, Felenoria felt a small tear drip off her check. When did this happen? Heck when did she start expressing emotions more now?
Exiting the alleyway, she ignored the crowd from earlier and started walking. Walking until something happens.
