Hello. Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening everyone. Azoth here bringing you a very, very long awaited update on the site.
It's been about two months since the last update, and there's quite good reason for it. Most of it is because of the sheer amount of work that has gone into the Site and because I felt that performing one large update at the end of all the changes would be a lot better than tiny updates and such along the way. This has allowed me to focus on what has needed to be done and has helped me put things together at my own pace. The only downside is that, honestly, I've forgotten a few things I've done recently. Thus, there are some changes to the site that may not be in this briefing. Feel free to PM them to me and I'll make some edits to add them in. For those who know me and have worked with me, you will know that I have a terrible memory. For those who haven't been around long enough; your Administrator has the memory of a goldfish. Feel free to remind me of things often and point out mistakes if I explain something different one day compared to another day. This happens every now and then.
But I won't drag on about how pitiful Brian (aka my brain) is at his job. Let's get to the updates.
I decided that I can't exactly do everything alone a while ago and called up Fallash and Yaela to give me a hand with profiles and quests respectively. Well, I learned that even they weren't enough for certain things. The two do well but to keep pace with what I need, I needed two direct assistants to help me out when I needed jobs done. These two are Echo and Bulwark. They are Assistant Moderators who have been summoned in order to help with the basic duties of the site. For the moment, they answer directly to me and me only, and they are on a tight leash. They are not Moderators. They do not grade Quests and they do not grade Profiles, not unless the areas get bogged down and it is extremely necessary that they have to work. If that problem arises, I will inform them of what to do and then they will be given the objectives as to help. Other than that, their duties are simple; keep things clean. So do not ask them to grade your profile or to look at your quest. You can tell them that you have an issue and they have been instructed to forward the message to either myself, Fallash, or Yaela, depending on the issue.
But, even with that being said, I ask that you respect them and do not interfere with their work. They are essentially extensions of my hand. If they are doing something or ask you for something, please just let them be and provide the information they ask for. If you are uneasy about talking to them, let them know and I will contact you instead. I feel like I shouldn't have to say this, but keep private information to yourself as well as the password to your account. They aren't going to ask for either, and they shouldn't lest they face my wrath, but just in case, keep that in mind.
I'm going to start off with something that I had a poll up for a little while ago ( [Poll Link] ). The poll presented the idea of a Subclass Mastery System, in which the Roleplaying subclasses would be adjusted to add some more spice to them. Not everyone participated but those that did showed that they were interested in the change, so I went through with it. Well, that happened and it happened in a way I wasn't originally expecting. It hasn't been completed yet and I'm just about done, so I'll spoil it a bit for you. Mind you, this happened entirely by accident.
My original plan was simply to break down the leveling into Tiers. I was going to have a bunch of chain quests that people would have to complete and through completing them, you'd rank up to the next tier and unlock new skills. It was simple, easy, and straightforward. It was going to be implemented in a matter of a week and it was going to be great. I'd have quests for a bunch of the subclasses and then have the Plot up right after.
That didn't happen at all. Instead I got hell.
As of this moment, I have created a system where the Roleplaying Subclasses are essentially their own entity. They exist to support your adventures, yes, but they level up entirely on their own and they each have their own lore attached to them. They have their own societies, their own networks, and they are pretty much secondary main classes at this point. They do not level with Tickets and follow an AP/SP spending system. To reach the next level, you have to collect a specific amount of AP and then perform an activity to rank up. NPCs fill the ranks at the moment and you can think of the Societies as Guilds for Landers, but welcome Adventurers who wish to join them.
Roleplaying Classes also have a new requirement; they are locked and unusable until you complete the opening quest associated with them. The reason for this is to create a feel of "joining" the Society associated with your Subclass. The Roleplaying Subclass at this point, as mentioned, is run by Landers. Thus, Adventurers do not originate in them. The Adventurers originate from the Main Classes. So, if you want to use a Roleplaying Subclass then you have to pick a Society and join up. Completing the opening quest allows you to join the Society and begin your secondary adventure as a member of the society. Each Society will have its benefits and boosts, as well as its own Subclasses associated with it. In addition, later on you may have the opportunity to pick up another Subclass. Yet, it is extremely difficult to do so and I will make life a living hell for your character.
What this all means is that I created an entirely separate Class System that originated from the idea of ranks and suddenly we now have Societies. Fun times. The good thing about this is that each Subclass will have its own set of quests associated with it, which was in the original plan, but will allow you to participate more directly in the world of Elder Tale. While the Plot line runs in one direction, the direction of World-level activity, Roleplaying Subclass Quests will allow your character to interact on a much closer level to the inhabitants of Elder Tale. This is done in hopes that it will give your character more dimension, as you will not only be running around playing the holy knight adventurer that you are, but you'll be a lackey for the Society you're apart of. Enjoy.
Changes are being made so this idea can be incorporated with ease, so expect some changes to the site. I'll let you know when it's all set up.
Oh, and if you want to change Subclasses because you see something nifty that you like with the new change, there will be a thread for it. Each player will be allowed one free Roleplaying Subclass swap when the changes are finished.
So this is a thing now. This site now has a "combat" system. What that means is that now all combat posts that are made in a GMed/DMed thread are capped at 6 seconds of IN-RP, or In-Character, time. The Skills will have their descriptions adjusted to match this change and people will be expected to follow the rule in all instances of GMed/DMed combat. Players who do not abide by this 6 second cap will be punished, harshly. There is no excuse and there is no lee-way. Of course, as mentioned, this only pertains to GMed/DMed threads. If you're in a solo or a social or whatever with a bunch of other players, feel free to use whatever time you'd like. But, players are welcome to notify the staff of "time abuse". If you are caught using a whole bunch of skills and essentially godmodding/powerplaying in your posts, you will be reprimanded.
Play fair and if there is any question, it is best to contact your Thread Partners before you post.
So because of a few nameless people, it has come to my attention that Discord can be quite the easy place to hide for trolls and children. That being said, a new rule has been put into place. Members who wish to join the Discord chat must have a registered character on the RP Site. If you don't have a character, or at least one that is a Work In Progress, you will be removed from Discord and asked to simply use the CBox. Discord is the alternative chat system to the CBox and has actually become the primary tool for chatter by accident. My goal was to use it for gaming and voice chatting but it turned into something else entirely.
Now, the CBox suffers and is generally inactive while the Discord Chat bubbles with activity. I would like to reverse this. Thus, I will be enforcing this rule. There is a chat in the Discord Server for those not associated with the RP but all members must have had a character before hand, or must be associated with another member on the site. They must also be active and a non-troll/child. All others will be removed. Those who end up archived will also be removed from the server. Discord is for active members only. All others are asked to use the CBox, this includes new prospective members.
There is a thread for this already; [Discord and Activity]. This rule will be enforced at the end of the month.
If you are in the CBox and are a new member, but no one has responded to you and there are online members in the Discord Widget, feel free to access Discord and chat it up, but don't become just a Discord-Hobo.
Over the past few months I have been coming up with a few different plot lines for the site and have finally made a decision on the direction I wish the site to take. Based on the timeline and small blurb I made a few weeks back, I have come up with something I hope to be an interesting twist on Elder Tale. This change will separate us even further from canon but that's quite fine. We are our own site and Log Horizon is simply our foundation/baseline in terms of terminology, lore, and information on things.
The new Plot story is being written up and quests will become available within the coming days, if not by the end of this weekend. The downside is that there is a level requirement to join. You must have a main level of 3 in order to participate in the Main Storyline's beginning Quests. The reason for this is to weed out the players who join and then leave right after making a character. It's to also help you get the gist of things before you get hot dropped into the core of this site.
By the time you reach level 3, you'll hopefully be comfortable with how we do things here and will have at least made two or three RP friends/partners that are willing to go with you in your adventures. You'll also have probably picked a roleplaying subclass and have at least started its initiation quest at this point.
Last night, or the night before (I can't remember) I discovered that there wasn't a way for you to apply for a level up. That's a problem. I also realized that the way you turn in your quests is confusing and can be a pain. Thus, I have made a swift adjustment to how the redemption process works. I've, quite simply, just made a Redemption board. I had initially planned to have this board up along with the Quest Board and it was there, it did exist, and it has been sitting in the Staff area since I wiggled my nose at it and said "naaah". Well now it's back.
In order to redeem a quest for rewards or level up, you now have a redemption board specific for it. You still apply for quests as normal but now you just have a new way to turn them in.
With the integration of Discord and the migration from the CBox to said Discord Server by a large number of players, it has come to my attention that the CBox is not used as much as I would like. In response I have created a Donate button. This donate button allows you to put money towards the CBox and ensure that it does not go away. I am very upset with a large number of folks who abandoned the CBox and left some of the newer members. I am even more upset with the fact that activity dropped at the same time. The integration of the Discord chat aided in this site's decline and part of me regrets making it, however it is useful and thankfully there's a Widget for it to show new members that we do exist still, but we're just in that chat.
However, it has also made me consider dropping the CBox. Most people have said that they would pay for the CBox if I chose not to and I am well aware of its usefulness. The CBox allows for swift chatting and people can ask questions without having to dedicate themselves to the site or anything. It also does not require an additional tab or anything of that sort. This allows prospective members to integrate with the rest of the community. But how do they integrate when everyone is on Discord? That is the conundrum.
If everyone is on discord, why should I pay for a CBox? I have asked myself that a few times. Thus, the Donation button has appeared. The button is pretty much a way for you to say "I want the CBox" and a way for you to ensure that you want it to be kept at the bottom of the forum. If 6 Dollars is raised before the subscription is up, the donate button will vanish and I will use that 6 dollars to pay for the new sub. I will also keep track of how much money is being donated and will update you all on the amount so that you don't put too much money in. If it happens where way to much has been donated, the button will remain missing until the CBox funds are used up.
The account associated with the button is the general GMail account for the site. If I were to leave the site, I will be turning over the GMail account to my successor(s) and they will have control over the button and the money in the account. I will also turn over the CBox, so don't worry about me stealing your money. I have my own job to make my own money.
When we first started the revamp process, I cut out Crafting entirely and locked it off from players. The reason for this was because I had some plans to make it more quest-oriented. However with the quest system now in place, I've made some little adjustments to crafting and the research system. I have replaced the old system with one that has been refined a little bit to fit the new standards.
Along with the Plot Quests that will be coming out, I will be putting out some Crafting Quests and Research Requests so people can start using their subclass. However, you don't have to wait for me to do so. You are more than welcome to make up your own quests and your own threads to use the system.
Remember; even with the updates, you are still allowed to run around and do your own thing. Those who believe that you are restricted to just quests are lying. "Quests" are just a fancy way that we track your progress and reward you. d(*-*d)
It has come to my attention that there's quite a lot of confusion on a number of various topics around the forum. Due to this, I have decided to bring something back that I did a while ago. About a year or so ago, I created a set of tutorial videos for the Forum and gave permission for them to be used by the Staff. However, I felt that the site was undeserving and I did not agree with a large amount of things that were going on so I had them removed. They were extremely useful and allowed people to see more directly what to do for certain things and I was able to explain concepts in different ways that could be understood a bit better.
I will be doing those again. I have a few ideas already on what topics I will be doing videos on but if you have something specific you want me to explain, send me a PM with your idea and I will see what I can do. The videos won't be done until all of the other changes are completed so don't think they are going to be available in a week or so. It may be a month before I can get them out but until then, you'll have to deal with my walls of text.
For the time being, that is it for the major updates. If you have any questions about anything posted above, feel free to contact myself or another staff member and we will do our best to answer them!
Thanks,

EDIT: I didn't add this in, but I'd like to clear something up. There's been quite a bit of time since the Site was passed to me by Murasaki and many of you may be wondering why this has taken so long. I do want to note that this was planned to an extent. My initial timeframe for the revamp process was from October to December. Christmas I wanted to be done with everything and I wanted to begin the plot, but around mid-October I came to realize something; the member base we had was partially toxic. Thus, I made a decision. The revamp for this site has taken a very, very long time because I have allowed it to do so. I have taken my time in hopes that some players who are considered "toxic" would leave for the time being and leave behind only the most dedicated members. You who are here now are the people I want to play on this site when it is started, and you will be recognized for doing so.
But do know that these members may ultimately return. Once the finishing touches have been made, I will be sending out another e-mail to see if some older folks want to return. And if any of those toxic members come back in the e-mail wave, they will be dealt with. This is a Roleplaying Site and I would like it to remain a fun place for everyone included. I will not allow people to make a mess of it simply because they can't get along with one another, nor do I wish for anyone to feel excluded. We are all here to play. If you, for any reason, feel uncomfortable because of someone else, I urge you to reach out to me immediately. I am not afraid to stand up for you, and I am not afraid to remove someone if they are causing issues. I am your Administrator, and it is my job to make this a place where you can come and enjoy yourself. If you aren't having fun, then there's a problem, and I will fix it.
It's been about two months since the last update, and there's quite good reason for it. Most of it is because of the sheer amount of work that has gone into the Site and because I felt that performing one large update at the end of all the changes would be a lot better than tiny updates and such along the way.
